THE MAGIC PENCIL

by Mary Slattery, adapted by Rosana Xavier and Luciana Gossmann

There is a very mean king in a very far away country. The people there are very poor.

The rich king lives in a beautiful castle. He has a lot of money but he never helps anyone. He keeps the
money in the cellar of the castle. There is a big lock on the door and another one on the window.

A boy called Torna lives

in the woods near the
Kings castle.

One day when he is coming home from school he sees a small wooden box under a big tree. Torna picks
up the box and opens it. Inside there is a pencil and a piece of paper with a message:

I am made from a special tree.

Pick me up and write with me
And if you are good and true
All your needs Ill give to you.

Ohall your needs, Torna says, and I am very

hungry. He picks up the pencil and writes the word
sandwich in his notebook. Just as he finishes the
H a big sandwich appears beside him. Torna eats
it. It is delicious.
Then Torna runs all the way home and says to his mother: What do you need? We need food, says his
mother, and some new clothes. Torna takes out his notebook
and writes food. As soon as he finishes writing d lots of food appear in the kitchen. Then Torna writes
clothes. As soon as he finishes writing s new clothes appear on the chairs in the kitchen. Tornas mother
is amazed. He shows her the pencil and the message in the box. Well, you are good and true, she says,
and there are lots of poor people in our country who need things. You can help them.

And Torna does. He helps a farmer. He asks him, What do you need? And the farmer says Well, we need
a horse to help us on the farm. So Torna writes horse. And as he finishes the letter e a horse appears.
The farmer is delighted.

He helps a painter. He asks him: What do you need? The painter says, I need some paint. So Torna
writes paint. And as he finishes the letter t 12 cans of paint appear. The painter is so happy he goes to
work immediately. Torna helps everyone. But he remembers the message. He only writes the words for
what people really need. Soon everyone is talking about the boy with the magic pencil.

But then the king hears about Torna, he asks him to come to the castle. Well, says the king, I hear you
can give people what they want. No, Torna says, the pencil gives people what they need. I only write the
words. Well, says the king, I need money. Write money. You dont need money, says Torna You have
lots of money. The king gets very angry. He shouts at Torna: Give me your pencil. I can write it myself.
And the king grabs the pencil. I want money, he says, lots of money. I want mountains of money. The
king starts to write mountainsand when he gets to the s the whole castle starts to shake.

Torna runs out of the castle but the king continues writing. The castle shakes and shakes. The walls begin
to crack. The floor begins to break into small pieces and big mountains of earth pushes up through the
floor.
All the money in the cellar fly up in the air. It is thrown all over the country. People think it is raining money!
The mountains go way up into the sky. And the king is never seen again.

As for the pencil Torna looks for it in the woods, in the rivers, in the towns. He looks everywhere. But the
pencil vanishes. Maybe YOU find it. If you do be careful what you write!
