Tech Admissions - 2012- Suggestions / Guidelines

Mechanical Engineering (ME)

NOTE: The following suggestions / guidelines for M.Tech admissions have been
prepared by us considering the information given by previous students based on their
score & Rank
IITs : MADRAS & KHARAGPUR are offering direct admissions based on GATE
rank/score. ( normally they ask you to give 8 to 10 preferences of specialisations.)
IITs, KANPUR, MUMBAI, ROORKEE, GAUHATI & IISc BANGALORE are giving
admissions for some specialisation based on the GATE rank/score directly and some
specialisations based on GATE rank/score + TEST + INTERVIEW. So candidates are
advised to opt for first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE score ( last year
admissions GATE SCORE and specialisations will be given in the brochure or website,
generally).
IIT, DELHI is giving admissions based on GATE Score + INTERVIEW. In general
candidate are called for interview by considering their first preference so candidate are
advised to opt for first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE score.
FOR IITS AND IISc THE CANDIDATES ARE ADVISED TO APPLY IN THE
FOLLOWING WAY:
All candidates within 200 rank or 99 percentile and above can apply for M.Tech in
Design or Manufacturing as first and second priorities based on their interest. The third
option is Industrial Engg.
All the ranks within 700 (or above 98 percentile) candidates can apply for industrial,
thermal and applied mechanics etc.
Above 600 rank (or 96&97 percentile) candidates can apply for applied mechanics,

M.S PROGRAMME: It is equivalent to M.Tech. Admissions are given twice in a year in
(JUNE & NOVEMBER) all IITs have M.S programme, here the admission is based Gate
score + interview + B.tech marks. Generally minimum period is two years but it depends on
candidates hard work. If the guide is satisfied with the work then the guide will recommend
for awarding MS, if not it may take more time. In general the average time period will be 2
to 3 years. Candidates who have percentile above 90 with B.tech percentage above 70%. have
chances to get this programme.
FOR MS in all IITs, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE CALLED FOR INTERVIEW
BASED ON GATE SCORE + DEGREE MARKS ( GENERAL METHOD ), BUT
SOME TIMES THEY MAY CALL BASED ON GATESCORE ITSELF.
NITIE ( Mumbai) : this is a very good institute in industrial Engg. Here the admissions are
based on Gate score + Group discussion + interview. G.D will be conducted generally on the
general topics like privatization, how to develop Rural areas, literacy development, terms
related to contract and agreement, role of a manager, effects of Gulf war on India, Signing on
nuclear treaty by INDIA and preventive measures, Outsourcing, infrastructure devlopment
etc. Candidates those who have percentile above 85, will be called for the GD and interview.
After doing PG here you will get a job with min of Rs 8 Lakhs / year.
NITIE (Bombay):
It offers 2 years PG Diploma in Industrial Engineering. It is a management course equivalent
to MBA. It has good campus placements. All the students who have more than 85 percentile

some colleges available in Tamilnadu etc. Notifications of these institutes may come in the
local dailies. Also this year some private engineering college of AP also started M.Tech like
CBIT, Vasavi, GPREC, RGIT etc.
Preferences: Generally Design and manufacturing are treated as equally preferred
specializations. Next comes out to be industrial management or industrial engg , next
preference goes to the thermal, next is Composites, Aerospace, Ocean Engg., Maintenance
Engg., etc.
ABOVE 99 PERCENTILE: They have to apply for all IITs and IISc with their interested
specializations. They also have to apply for NITIE. If they are between 99 and 99.5 and
require design or manufacturing specialization, they have to apply PSG, NITs or apply nonstipend (self financing) in IITs. etc.
BETWEEN 98 & 99 percentiles: They have to apply for all IITs and IISc, They will
definitely get seat in IITs but not design or manufacturing , but it may be thermal etc. but
they have chances to get design or Mfg. If they apply in non-stipend category. They also can
apply for NITIE.
BETWEEN 97 & 98 percentiles: They have to apply for all IITs and IISc, PSG

engg colleges (Govt. & Private) , Jodhpur University etc. Recently in AP also many
Engineering colleges has started M.Tech programs and they are also giving stiphend. All
below 90 will definitely get seat in this colleges.
Special attention for SC/ST students: We strongly suggest you to apply for premier
institutes like IITs irrespective of your percentiles. Luck may favor you.

Special attention for Girls: Certain universities have girls reservation, eg. Andhra Pradesh.
Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances.
Special note for Second Class students: If you see the rules & regulations of various
premier Institutes, 1st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite. If you apply online, your
application will be rejected. Hence we suggest you to apply manually with a request letter
stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE Score and your desire to do M.Tech
in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Most
of the professors would like to encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of
the above negative point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to
join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with
sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. some of our old students
with second class in their graduation got admission on similar grounds. Be bold and be
positive. Definitely, you can reach your goal

NOTE:
1.The students are advised to select the first preference carefully, appropriate to their
GATE score level as the students are called for interview based on their 1st
preference opted, generally
2. Those who have got relatively low scores in the GATE are strongly advised to
apply for more number of colleges (not less than 10) so that they can get
admission in at least one college in the desired specialization
3. The students shall be in-touch with the daily English newspapers ( The Hindu,
The Indian Express, The Times of India etc.) and Employment News for the
M.Tech notifications by various colleges.
4. The students are also advised to visit the websites of the premier colleges for all the
latest details on M.Tech admissions.
5. All the above guidelines are only suggestive / advisory. The candidates are
requested to go through the information brochure of each college and take
decision appropriately. Depending upon their interest.
6. The students may also contact their seniors/friends studying in various
colleges for their suggestions and latest information about the colleges.

WISH U ALL THE BEST
