1. A metallic piece weighs 75.3 N at allocation where acceleration due to gravity is 9.75
M/s2. What is the mass of the metallic piece? Proceed to calculate reading on the spring
balance if the weighing is done at the moon where gravitational acceleration measures
1.67 m/s
2. A mass of 1 kg is weighed by abeam balance at a location where g = 9.35 m/s2. What will
be the reading of the beam balance? The same is next weighed by a spring balance
which was calibrated at sea level where g = 9.81 m/s2. What will be the indicated weight?
If the calibration had been made at a location where g = 9.35 m/s2, what would be the
indicated weight and the weight in standard Newton?
3. A fan delivers 4 m3 of air having a mass equal to 5 kg. Calculate weight, specific weight,
density and specific volume of the air being delivered.
4. A vehicle accelerate a glider of 125 kg mass from rest to a speed of 50 km/hr. make
calculations for the work done on the glider by the vehicle. What change would occur in
the kinetic energy of the glider if subsequently its velocity reduces to 20 km/hr on the
application of brakes?
5. An artificial satellite of 500 kg is moving towards the moon. Make calculations for the
kinetic energy and potential energies.
a. Relative to the earth when 50 km from launching and travelling at 2500 km/hr. take
earths gravitational field equal to 7.9 m/s2.
b. Relative to the moon when travelling at the same velocity and 50 km from its
destination where 1 kg mass has a weight of 3 N.
6. Determine the pressure difference indicated by a U-tube mercury (density = 13600
kg/m3) manometer if the difference in the level of mercury in the two limbs is 52.5 mm.
How would this level difference be affected if the mercury is replaced by carbon
tetrachloride whose specific gravity is 1.5?
7. A Turbine is supplied with steam at a pressure of 20 bar gauge. After expansion in the
turbine the steam passes to a condenser which is maintained at a vacuum of 250 mm of
mercury by means of pumps. Express the inlet and exhaust steam pressure in N/m 2 and
kPa. The barometer reads 750 mm of mercury.
8. A U- tube mercury manometer has been employed to measure the pressure of gas flowing
through a pipe line. One limb of the manometer communicates with the gas pressure and
the other limb is open to atmosphere. If the difference in level of mercury in two limb is
40cm, determine the gas pressure and express it in kpa, bar and atmosphere. The
barometer reads 750 mm of mercury.
9. A vessel of cylindrical shape, 50 cm diameter and 75 cm height, contains 4 kg of a gas.
The pressure gauge mounted on the vessel indicates 620 mm of mercury above
atmosphere. If the barometer reading is 760 mm of mercury, calculate the absolute
pressure of gas in bar. Also determine the density and specific volume of the gas.

10.The air supply to an internal combustion engine is metered by observing the pressure
drop across an orifice in the air supply line to the engine. The pressure drop is measured
by means of a manometer containing paraffin having a density of 800 kg/m 3. Express the
difference of level of mercury of 20 cm in manometer in (a) bar, meters of air. Take
density of air as 1.23 kg/m3.
