ABSTRACT
High production machining at high cutting velocity and feed generates large amount of
heat and high cutting temperature, which shortens the tool life and deteriorates the job
quality. This problem becomes more acute when the jobs are made of high strength
materials and are difficult to machine. The conventional cutting fluids are not that
effective in such high production machining particularly in continuous cutting of
materials like steels. Further, the conventional cutting fluids are not environment friendly.
The major needs in machining are high material removal rate, good work surface finish
and low tool wear. In this paper, instead of conventional coolants, liquid nitrogen is
applied through specialized nozzles, so that liquid nitrogen can be directly enter to the
machining zone during the machining of stainless steel with carbide tools. Cryogenic
cooling in machining process is studied by machining AISI 4140 using steel carbide
inserts of two different integrated chip breaker geometry under dry machining and
cryogenic cooling. The effect of cryogenic cooling on cutting temperature, tool wear and
tool life, surface finish and dimensional accuracy is analyzed. The encouraging results
include significant reduction in tool wear rate, dimensional inaccuracy and surface
roughness by cryogenic cooling application mainly through reduction in the cutting zone
temperature and favorable change in the chiptool and worktool interaction. It was
found that tool life increases by applying liquid nitrogen using the modified tool.
