11.

a)

A tensile load of 40kN is acting on a rod of diameter 40mm and of length 4m. A

16

bore of diameter 20mm is made centrally on the rod. To what length the rod should
be bored so that the total extension will increase 30% under the same tensile load.
Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2
b

OR
A steel tube of 30mm external diameter and 20mm internal diameter encloses a

copper rod of 15mm diameter to which it is rigidly joined at each end. If, at a

16

temperature of 10C there is no longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod
and tube when the temperature is raised to 200C. Take E for steel and copper as 2.1
x105 N/mm2and 1x 105 N/mm2 respectively. The value of co-efficient of linear
expansion for steel and copper is given as 11 x 10 -6 per C and 18 x 10-6 per C
respectively.
12.

a) A simply supported beam of length 5m carries a uniformly increasing load of

1

16

800N/m run at one end to 1600N/m at the other end. Draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams for the beam, also calculate the position and magnitude
of maximum bending moment
b

OR
A square beam 20mm x 20mm in section and 2m long is supported at the ends. The

beam fails when a point load of 400N is applied at the centre of the beam. What

16

uniformly distributed load per length will break a cantilever of the same material
40mm wide, 60mm deep and 3m long?
13.

a) A hollow shaft is 1m long and has external diameter 50mm. It has 20mm internal

16

diameter for a part of the length and 30mm internal diameter for the rest of the
length. If the maximum shear stress in it is not to exceed 80 N/mm 2, determine the
maximum power transmitted by it at a speed of 300 r.p.m. If the twists produced in

the two portions of the shafts are equal, find the lengths of the two portions
OR
The stiffness of a close coiled helical spring is 1.5 N/mm of compression under a

maximum load of 60N. The maximum shearing stress produced in the wre of the

16

given as 5cm. find :(i) diameter of wire, (ii) mean diameter of the coils and (iii)
number of coils required, Take C = 4.5 x 104 N/mm2
14.

a) A beam of length 5m and of uniform rectangular section is simply supported at its

16

ends. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 9kN/m run over the entire length.
Calculate the width and depth of the beam if permissible bending stress is 7 N/mm 2

and central deflection is not to exceed 1cm.

vertical plane is 1000N/cm2 inclined at 30 to the normal to that plane and the stress
on a horizontal plane has a normal tensile component of intensity 600 N/cm 2 as
