Its hard to believe, butadrenal fatigue is estimated toaffect around 80 percent of

people in the world! According toJames Wilson (author of Adrenal Fatigue: The
21st Century Stress Syndrome), chronic stress and lifestyle affect the bodys ability
to recuperate from physical, mental or emotional stress.
In fact, whether for a short time or a chronic condition, most people struggle with
adrenal fatigue at some point in their lives.Symptoms include:

body aches
trouble concentrating
racing thoughts
moodiness and irritability
alwaystired
feeling overwhelmed
hormone imbalance
cravings for sweet and salty foods

These symptoms can be indicative of a few different disorders and are often
overlooked by doctors, but more and more people are starting to realize that a
combination of these could indicate the onset of adrenal fatigue, also known as
adrenal insufficiency.
And if you have adrenal fatigue, it can also be a major cause of excess fat storage
and low energy levels. So, lets talk about exactly what your adrenal glands do and
how you can overcomeadrenal fatigue in three simple steps.

Your Amazing Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands are two thumb-sized organs

that sit above your kidneys andare part of the
endocrine system. Also known as the suprarenal
glands, theyre involved in producing over 50
hormones that drive almost every bodily function,
many of which are essential for life.
Hormones affect every function, organ and tissue in
the body directly or indirectly. They react to each

other as well as respond to conditions inthe body in an intricate and highly

sensitive balancing act. The adrenal glands work closely with the hypothalamus
and the pituitary gland in a system known as the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal
axis (HPA axis).
Adrenal glands play a huge role in stress response. Your brain registers a threat
whether its emotional, mental or physical. The adrenal medulla releases adrenaline
hormones to help you react to the threat (the fight-or-flight response), rushing
blood to your brain, heart and muscles. The adrenal cortex then releases
corticosteroids to dampen processes like digestion, immune system response and
other functions not necessary for immediate survival.
Your adrenal glands are responsible for balancing hormones, such as:
Glucocorticoids hormones that balance your bodys blood sugar, help with
energy and food metabolism, help your body buststress, and manage your
immune response (e.g., cortisol).
Mineralocorticoids hormones that maintain healthy blood pressure, manage
your blood hydration level, and keep your blood healthy by keeping salt and water
in balance (e.g., aldosterone).
Sex hormones estrogen and testosterone.
Adrenaline hormones that affect your heart health, make sure that all parts of the
body are getting blood and convert glycogen into glucose in your liver.

What Causes Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and adrenal glands cant keep up
with the tremendous amount of daily stress many people experience. Sometimes
misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder, adrenal fatigue can mimic some
precursors to other common illnesses and disease.
Wellness doctors and practitioners believe that an episode of acute stress or
prolonged, chronic stress can cause adrenal glands to become overloaded and
ineffective. They believe that adrenal fatigue can be caused by:

Stressful experiences like death of loved one, divorce or surgery

Exposure to environmental toxins and pollution
Prolonged stress due to financial hardship, bad relationships or work
environment, and other conditions that entail feelings of helplessness
Negative thinking and emotional trauma
Lack of sleep
Poor diet and lack of exercise

Also, according to the Mayo Clinic, severe adrenal fatigue symptoms may actually
be Addisons disease.

Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms

What happens when the adrenal glands stop producing hormones efficiently?
Every bodily function is affected, and as adrenal hormone levels shrink, even the
normal get-up-and-go you get from them disappears. Adrenal fatigue symptoms
include:
Morning fatigue or trouble waking up
Decreased libido
Depression
Muscle weakness
Poor focus
Bone loss
Inflammation
Increased allergies
Difficulty sleeping
Irritability
Fatigue

Cravings for sugar

Hair loss
Weight gain
Muscle tension
Inability to tolerate high-carb/potassium foods unless paired with fat and protein

If youve experienced any of these adrenal fatigue side effects, take heart, for there
are now many natural ways to treat and support your adrenal system.

3 Steps to Heal Adrenal Fatigue

Treatment for adrenal fatigue involves reducing stress on your body and your mind,
eliminating toxins, avoiding negative thinking, and replenishing your body with
healthy food and positive thoughts.

1. Adrenal Fatigue Diet

In every case of adrenal recovery, diet is a huge
factor. There are a number of foods that support
adrenal function. They help replenish your adrenal
energy so your system can come back to full health.
But first you must start byremoving any hard-todigest foods and any toxins or chemicals in your
environment.
The idea is to remove anything that taxes your adrenals. Foods to avoid include:
Caffeine: This can interfere with your sleep cycle and make it hard for your
adrenals to recover. If you must drink coffee or a caffeinated beverage, then have a
limited amount in the morning before noon.
Sugar and sweeteners: Includes avoiding high-fructose corn syrup and artificial
sweeteners as well. Avoid sugary foods, cereals, candy, sweets, etc. Be aware that
sugar is an additive in many breads, condiments and dressings. Try to avoid as
much extra sugar as possible. Seek the benefits of raw honey or stevia as an

alternative.
Processed and microwaved foods: First of all, the microwave has its own
dangers, but additionally, most microwaveable foods have many preservatives and
fillers that are hard to digest and wear out your bodys energy and digestion cycle.
Try to buy food on the outer walls of your grocery store and prepare your own food
whenever possible.
Hydrogenated oils: Vegetable oils like soybean, canola and corn oil are highly
inflammatory andcan lead to adrenal inflammation. Try to only use good fats such
as coconut oil, olive oil, organic butter or ghee.
Next, you want to add nutrient-dense foods that are easy to digest and have
healing qualities. Some of the top superfoods for adrenal health include:
Coconut
Olives
Avocado
Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.)
Fatty fish (e.g., wild-caught salmon)
Chicken and turkey
Nuts, such as walnuts and almonds
Seeds, such as pumpkin, chia and flax
Kelp and seaweed
Celtic or Himalayan sea salt

These foods help overcome adrenal insufficiency because theyre nutrient-dense,

low in sugar, and have healthy fat and fiber.
See also my healing diet for more food suggestions.

2. Adrenal Fatigue Supplements

Another big key to overcoming adrenal fatigue is taking the right supplements. I
http://draxe.com/3stepstohealadrenalfatigue/

01/02/2016

3StepstoHealAdrenalFatigueNaturallyDr.Axe

always recommend eating the right foods to heal your body. However, due to soil
depletion (from over-farmed and
unhealthy farming practices), much of
the fruits and vegetables dont have
the sameamount of nutrition that
theydid even 50 years ago.
Thus, certain adrenal-boosting
nutrients are neededto get your
adrenal function back up, suchas:
Ashwagandha
Holy basil
Fish oil (EPA/DHA)
Magnesium
Vitamin B5
Vitamin B12
Vitamin C
Vitamin D3
Zinc

Taking these supplements in their whole-food form could greatly improve your
symptoms of adrenal insufficiency.

3. Adrenal Fatigue Stress Reduction

The last and most important key to restoring your adrenal function is to heedyour
mind and stress needs. Pay attention to your body!
1. Rest when you feel tired as much as possible.
2. Sleep 810 hours a night.
3. Avoid staying up late and stay on a regular sleep cycle ideally, in bed before 10
p.m.
http://draxe.com/3stepstohealadrenalfatigue/

8/31

01/02/2016

3StepstoHealAdrenalFatigueNaturallyDr.Axe

4. Laugh and do something fun every day.

5. Minimize work and relational stress.
6. Eat on a regular food cycle, and reduce
yourcaffeine and sugar addiction.
7. Exercise (even moderate exercise and walking
can help).
8. Avoid negative people and self-talk.
9. Take time for yourself (do something relaxing).
10. Seek counsel or support for any traumatic experiences.

Lets talkabout self-talk for a minute. Our bodies are made to heal. However, the
wordswe say have a great impact on our body and our ability to heal. Regardless
of what diet and supplements you take, your environment is one of the most
important components.
So, be kind to yourself. Try to avoid saying negative things about yourself and
others. Its important to choose to be around positive people and stay positive
about yourself as well.

3StepstoHealAdrenalFatigueNaturallyDr.Axe

Recovery for adrenal fatigue can take a little while. After all, it took months, maybe
years, to wear out your adrenals; so it takes a little time to build up their strength
again. For full adrenal recovery, you can expect it to take:
69 months for minor adrenal fatigue
1218 months for moderate fatigue
Up to 24 months for severe adrenal fatigue

The best approach is to make solid changes to your lifestyle for lasting results. If
you aim for a balanced lifestyle with a healthy level of sleep, exercise, fun and
positive environment, then you are most likely to keep your adrenal system going
strong!

All About Resveratrol

Along with diet change I started my adrenal recovery with essential oils. I
make a mixture of lemongrass, peppermint & clove in coconut oil and apply
it several ties a day to the base of my throat for my thyroid, to my back just
below the ribcage where my adrenals are and to the corresponding points
on my feet. One of the symptoms of Adrenal fatigue is low back pain and
knee pain, both became less within three days of using the oil. When I am
particularly tired my knees and back will ache and within moments of
applying the oils most of the pain is gone. Another symptom of adrenal
fatigue Ive been told is lack of sweat. I have not perspired in years, but in
the four months since Ive been using this oil mixture I now sweat profusely
in the Texas heat. I am also using a cream form of DHEA which has also
helped me feel better. I have cut out all grains and sugar from my diet which
has reduced inflammation and helping to lose some weight so that walking
is not so painful.

Well the thanks goes to you and so many others who have
shared their expertise and journey that I have been able to
experiment and find what works for me. Im still working to
adjust things in my life. Getting to bed by 10 is the hardest, I
just have some sort of resistance to going to bed, like a child
whose afraid of missing something. I dont mind taking naps in
the day time, but bed time is difficult. Even when Ive had a
busy day and exhausted by 8 I feel the resistance. Also when
Ive had a busy day I need to plan for a recovery day or I will
just feel a crash and cant get out of bed for several days. So
listening to my body has been paramount in my recovery. Now
that the days in Texas are becoming cooler I plan to start
walking a bit each day which I hope will also help energize me
and help me lose some weight. I have for the past three weeks
eaten a ketogenic diet which has given me more energy and
lost 9 pounds.
Thanks Dr. Axe for great articles and sharing them with us all!

I would really like to try the essential oil mixture you use. How many
drops of oil do you use for each and how much coconut oil? Can you
make it ahead of time & store it in a container or do you make it each
time you apply it?
Dr. Josh Axe says:

October 13, 2014 at 3:34 pm

Wow, I had no idea there was a whole discussion going on

here.
To answer your question over time I have purchased a lot of
oils and save the bottles for future use. I use a 4 oz brown
bottle, fill it almost to the neck then add two to three cap fulls
of Lemongrass, one peppermint, and about 20 to 30 drops of
clove. The clove will burn if you get too much and also on a hot
day when you are perspiring and put it on your back above
your adrenals. I try to apply it a couple of times a day but the
peppermint will keep you awake if you use it at night. I use
lavender and frankincense at night. In fact the frankincense I
get comes premixed with grapeseed oil and I put a drop on my
tongue at night before bed. Ive also heard clary sage is a good
oil for adrenal fatigue. Havent tried it yet, I have a limited
budget but will try soon.
Kathleen M says:
October 13, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Im sorry let me clarify the brown bottle I fill almost to the neck
with coconut oil. I then transfer small amounts to a little bottle
with a roller to keep in my purse and bedside stand.

I love eggs so they are what I eat mostly for breakfast. I also
will eat crisp turkey bacon and Dubliner Irish cheddar cheese
which is one of my favorite quick on the go breakfasts if I have
to hurry in the morning. I dont usually do mornings. :)
Because I am retired and can sleep and rest when I like I often
allow myself the luxury of sleeping as late as I want. Therefore,
breakfast for me is often noon or later. I struggle with going to
bed at a decent time and often cant get to sleep until after 2

Kathleen, thanks so much for the advice! I can certainly relate,

since I too have breakfast just shortly before noon. :( I hate
that, but my body simply will not wake up until about ten
minutes until 11:00. My naturopath has me on NatureThroid,
and I have to wait an hour after taking it before I eat. The past
three days, I have been waking up around 9:00 for a little
while, so I take it then and go back to sleep. I have five
supplements I have to take 30 minutes before breakfast:
OraAdren80, 2 before breakfast, 2 before lunch, and one at
three oclock (hard to work that out), ATP Fuel Complete
Mitochondrial Support made by Researched Nutritionals, 5
caps, Kavinace made by NeuroScience, Gutathione made by
Essential Nutraceuticals, and a ProBiotic. My adrenal fatigue
was caused by Lyme Disease. I also had mercury poisoning,
heavy metal toxicity (mostly lead), and Candida. Those things
feed off each other. Ive had a lot of chelation, especially for
the mercury. Doc said I had antibodies for Hashimotos. After a
mercury chelation treatment, I could actually feel the mercury
being pulled out, and I would wake up at night with my thyroid
hurting so badly I would nearly cry. My doctor has been
treating me three years now. If we can get my thyroid and
adrenals to recover, I should be feeling wonderful! I will try the
essential oils! Thank you so much! BTW, in the Natural Cures
Summit Dr. Axe had a couple of weeks ago, Dr. Alan
Christiansen said 30 to 50 grams of protein in the morning is
helpful. I love egss, but an eggs is only about 6 grams, so I
went to GNC and got a protein powder. The local GNC caters
to body builders, so theres a wide selection. Maybe its
helping, dont know yet. Love this discussion! Thanks again.

muscle weakness and insomnia. After 2 years of being on the Synthroid , I
am almost completely bald on the top of my head, which I had a head full of
very long beautiful hair before I started losing it. My doctor tells me I have
sufficient amounts of the T4 and T3 hormones and I have requested that he
change me to Amour brand natural thyroid medication to see if it will stop
my hair lose and help me to feel better. He says I need more tests and
doesnt like writing for Amour, but he will if I insist. What is your opinion on
Amour brand medication verses Synthroid? Many non- practicing doctors
promote the natural medication over synthetic. What I would like to
eventually do is get off the meds and just boost my thyroid with foods that
aid in thyroid production. Any advice you can offer I would greatly

not work like what my body used to make. Finally I found a DR near
Atlanta who specializes in treating patients with Bio-identical thyroid
hormone, not synthetic or Armour. She did a lot of tests no
endochrinologists ever bothered to do on me. Many women can have
the normal amounts of T3 and T4 in their bloodstream, which is
what is measured when we have our blood work done. However that
doesnt mean our organs and tissues are utilizing that normal amount
of hormone in our blood hence the ongoing hypothyroid symptoms
and normal blood labs. I also learned my adrenal glands barely
function. I have begun doing many of the things Dr Axe recommends
here. I hope you get some answers. If you dont get relief I highly

Barbara, have you made any dietary changes? Certain foods are
inflammatory to the body and over time could cause a lot of the
ailments you mentioned, and will continue on to cause even worse
conditions unless a change is made.
The major foods that are inflammatory are typically highly processed
and are very different from their natural state. Those foods include:
gluten, milk, refined sugars, highly-processed oils (canola, shortening,
margarine), excess red meat, sodas, excess alcohol, synthetic
chemicals (artificial colors and flavors, MSG, apartame), and other
refined foods. (AKA foods that have been altered by man, or are
completely created by man)
To put it simply, our bodies were not designed to operate off of such
foods, and when we have a diet composed of almost solely those
things (the Standard American Diet) and very little vegetables and
fruits with healing compounds with stress and lack of sleep added
on top (also inflammatory), things are bound to start going wrong.
Nutrition gives your immune system the firepower it needs to keep
you well. Without nutrition, you are fighting with no weapons; without
your immune system, you are fighting with no army.
I am glad to hear that you are seeking help from a Naturopath! I would
suggest voicing your concerns to her directly and she could offer
advice or change your mixture up. Just remember, it takes time for
the body to repair! It takes time, but it is highly worth it.

constant pain. I had a CAT scan to find my kidney stones and saw that the
left hip area.there is very little space between the femur, and the hip bone.
I see a chiropractor 3 to 4 times a week..made a great deal with him. He is
also into the Paleo diet and sells Standard Process brand supplements that
helped my TSH come back to normal. I think that is the name of ithe
hormone. But I still have the brittle hair..almost baldvery dry skin to the
point of rawness on my face and near my eyesbrittle nails and much more.
Adrenals not good. On supplementation for them. I really need help! I am
about 80 pounds overweight, and need to lose. I have a recumbent
bike..and that is the only aerobic exercise I can dojust wondering if you
have burst exercises for me. I fell last week and now cannot even do the
bike right now. Under much stress, since I am doing 3 kinds of taxes right
nowI hate taxes!

You can do burst training on the bike that you have. Try going as hard
as you can for 30 seconds and then resting for 30 seconds. There is
also a low impact version on the burst fit DVDs that could be an
option. I would also check out the protocols listed here on balancing
hormones:

Yoga is also very helpful when youre dealing with injuries, because
you really work with your body. If you have any local classes
available, an instructor can help you and make sure youre doing the
poses correctly.

I am constantly struggling with my adrenals. The one thing that I have

consistently taken that greatly helps with my focus and other symptoms is
raw adrenal concentrate. I cannot go a day without it! Thank you so very
much for all your fabulous articles.

I had my thyroid removed in 2000. I have been symptomatic for 14 years and
have recently been so sick and in the bed. 5 weeks ago I did my own
research as my PC would not do anything about my symptoms because she
said my thyroid was NORMAL. So after much research I found a Functional
Med Clinic and went there to find out I actually was VERY HYPOthyroid. I
asked to switch to Armour from 14 years of Synthroid not taking care of
symptoms. After 1 day my chronic headaches were gone and have not
returned. Other symptoms are also gone or much less! BUT I do think my
adrenals are fatigued as well. I have changed my diet and I am taking
supplements. QUESTION: I noticed all summer that I would not sweat but
that my skin would feel Salty as if I had just gotten out of the ocean. Is this
a sign of Adrenal Fatigue? No one seems to be able to answer why this is
happening to me.

Have you made any dietary changes? Certain foods are inflammatory
to the body and over time could cause a lot of the ailments you
mentioned, and will continue on to cause even worse conditions
unless a change is made.
(Chris Beat

Kelp supplements. I recently started taking them daily and it seems to be

helping. Should I be taking a vacation from them? Ive heard to take a week
off every so often or some people only take them during the week and take
weekends off. Could the iodine build up?
Dr. Josh Axe says:
October 12, 2014 at 9:44 pm

It could. I would consult with your physician regarding your iodine

levels and how often to take the supplements.

Dr. Axe,
Can you help me with Myasthenia Gravis? My Dr. diagnosed me about a
year ago. The fatigue is awful and I feel exhausted all the time . I take
Mestinon that the doctor prescribed but I was wondering about herbs and
supplements to help with my condition.
Dr. Josh Axe says:
October 12, 2014 at 9:52 pm

I would follow the healing foods diet and eliminate refined sugars and
conventional dairy. I would increase your intake of healthy fats and
antioxidants and also supplement with CoQ10, vitamin B complex,
vitamin D3, and omega 3.
