CHIROPRACTIC
SURVIVE?
A DECLARATION OPPOSING
LEGISLATIVE DOMINATION
A DECLARATION FOR CHIROPRACTIC
PROFESSIONAL INDEPENDENCE

By

B. J. OF DAVENPORT

philosopher, scientist, artist, builder, hobbyist, musician, author, lecturer

publisher, art connoisseurthe bit of a mortal human being whom Innate
Intelligence developed.

Oil portrait by Raymond, P. R. Neilson Studios. 131 East 66th Street

New York City.

There was a time when our professional family was very closely knitted.
The FOUNTAIN HEAD NEWS was the voice of B. J., The P.S.C., and
Chiropractic.
It was a fearless and dynamic publication. It discussed evils as well as good.
In those days, there were practically NO state associations, NO state
publications.
In those days, the UCA had 5,000 members and was dynamic in its programs.
Gradually, one by one, state associations came into being;
one by one, state associations published journals;
members attended their STATE conventions and gradually ceased attending PSC
Lyceums;
members began to absorb theories, techniques, adjuncts, anti-chiropractic, promedical methods.

During this period of years, The PSC kept improving, developing, researching
TIC, making it more simple, better, stronger, more perfected, more able to serve
more sick.
During these years, mixing gradually percolated into our people. They took the
path of LEAST resistance, gave the sick what they cried for, gave them less of TIC.
Money became a dominant issueNOT service to the sick.
During this period, legislation became involved. Straight TIC legislation began
to be amended, taking in what they shouldnt, and avoiding what they should retain.
During these years, State Boards became infiltrated with mixing rules and
regulations, subjects for examinations, accreditations, etc.
A spirit of lethargy crept into the heads and hands of our members. The old
spirit of do or die, fight for a principle, began to lose face, weakened under
pressure from many on one side and fewer on the other.
Older disciples who were sick got adjustments and got well; went forth to serve
what THEY had received.
Today, we have a younger generation, educated people, 4-years-of-nine, 2
years pre-college, basic science subjects, etc. The TIC kept GETTING BETTER.
TORS GOT LESS AND LESS OF TIC and MORE of anything and everything
else.

ICA ORIGINATED THE SEMINAR IDEA at our mid-year Board of Control

meetings, in Hollywood, Boston, Atlanta, etc.
[5]

They accomplished a tremendous good in reshaping and reeducating many FROM

pro-medical TO pro-Chiropractic, back to the back programs. They were
constructive.

The time has gone by when you habitually can sit idly by and take things for
granted that the goose hangs high and all is well on the Potomac. The YEAR OF
DECISION is long past due; it is NOW AN HOUR FOR ACTIONnot a year. It
is EVERY MAN TO HIS GUNS, the ENEMY is AT OUR DOOR. The desires of
a few for revenge, hatred, lies, vituperation, misrepresentations, deceptions, must be
met with OUR army, for we have truth, honesty, service, deliveries, lives at stake.
We no longer remain silent and see fathers, mothers, children permitted to be
forced to early graves because a handful of revenge-seeking men lead an army of
innocent babes down the road to their own, as well as our destruction.

Once upon a time, Chiropractors were called fakirs, ignorant, grafters,

practicing a cult with no scientific training, etc. In spite of all this, we WERE
getting sick people well. High or low, a backbone concealed a cause and cure.
Patients had a subluxation, we adjusted, they got well because of INNATE WITHIN coming from ABOVE-DOWN, INSIDE-OUT.
We were prosecuted and persecuted, but that tested our sincerity and
convictions, brot out stuff we were made of. The principle was grand, great. The
practice might have been crude, but the percentage of sick people who got well was
much higher than any other profession. Graduates those days were filled to
overflowing with a super abundance of confidence in a highly essenced Innate
knowledge, with a deep and sound understanding of the righteousness of their cause.
They went forth with heads high, chests out, looking all people eye-to-eye, and
preached the gospel. Their cup of Chiropractic was filled to overflowing and
running over.

In those days, Chiropractic, Chiropractors, and Chiropractic schools were on

the upswing. ALL were growing, thriving, multiplying. The PSC alone had as high
as 3,200 students at one time.
The PSC has over 1,000 students now165 from foreign countries. Why?
Because it has built a reputation of being an ALL-CHIROPRACTIC institution, no
mixing with medicine. As the CHIROPRACTIC FOUNTAIN HEAD, it has built
an enviable reputation down thru all its years. It has remained faithful to the
precepts, concepts, and tenets of WHAT IS AND WHAT IS NOT
CHIROPRACTIC. It has paid to tell and sell CHIROPRACTIC. It has remained
true, loyal, and faithful to
[6]

its heritage to STRAIGHT Chiropractic, knowing that the opposite of STRAIGHT

is CROOKED.

In 1895, Harvey Lillard got well from deafness. People said we were ignorant.
In spite of this we had ONE 100 per cent principle, ONE 5 per cent practice, ONE
100 per cent Innate to work with that did what we claimed and set out to do.

Schools Being Forced to Close

Most NCA schools are begging for support. One asks the State Medical Board
to finance it. Another WAS supported by one association until it gave up. Another
is heavily in debt, with a reduction in enrollments year by year, struggling along,
and doesnt know when it will close its doors. Another is begging for hand-outs,
eking along one semester to another. Two others are ready to close any month,
students not knowing whether or not to enroll there. Most of these schools, knowing
little, if anything, about the basic fundamental philosophy OF CHIROPRACTIC,
were teaching anything and everythingphysiotherapy, naturopathy, vitamins, promedical subjects. THAT was THEIR downfall.
One school closed its doors within the past month. It is now trying to peddle its
30 students to another school.
Another school has 55 students and owes $90,000, with no prospects of it ever
being paid.
Another school had 7 students, closed, and auctioned off its equipment a short
time ago.
Another school is $18,000 in debt, and mortgages more than that. Its
enrollment is down one-half less.
Another had 3 students this semester.
Nineteen and five tenths per cent of the North American Association of Schools
and Colleges could not meet the two-year pre-collegiate provision the NCA urges
all to adopt.
The NCA calls these successful steps upward, decreasing our schools.
What do YOU think?
What about today? The North American Association and its accredited
Chiropractic schools and colleges are swimming upstream. THEY teach a
philosophy, science, and art of an all-inclusive CHIROPRACTIC and all-exclusive
everything medical.
Page 24 of the August, 1958, NCA Journal contains this statement:
Further, in an effort TO RENEW interest and support of the NOW
EXISTING colleges of Chiropractic, the doctor in the field IS
BESEECHED to search
[7]

HIS HEART to see if he is really supportingif not his own alma mater,
then at least one of the accredited colleges * * *
The ONE SANE WAY to RE-NEW interest is to understand that
Chiropractic schools owe a Chiropractic obligation to the field, AND the
Chiropractic field owes an obligation to Chiropractic schools. If it were not FOR
their schools, the field wouldnt be. How aptly that statement NOW-EXISTING
colleges. Many of them ARE existing, not living. To beseech HIS HEART
means less than nothing. The heart is a chunk of muscles that pumps oxygen in
and carbon dioxide out. If the field WILL SEARCH THEIR INNATES, THEYLL
GET PROPER ANSWERS.

OUR schools are NOT supported by private or public endowments or state

taxes. To fill stop-gaps, the NCA accredited ONLY those schools which were nonprofit. Today they ARE non-profit, which is one or two main reasons WHY they
are folding up. A non-profit school pays no state, national, or income tax, which
permits the faculty to drain its incomes in high salaries, which reduces instruction
values, which reduces enrollments, which eventually closes the schools.
All ChiropracTORS SHOULD SUPPORT ChiropracTIC schools. It is an eyeopener to realize it is discouraging to NCA accredited schools, one after another, on
the down-grade, asking for hand-outs to support them, begging for nickels and
dimes, when it costs thousands to keep any one going for even a month. The
financial reports of these NCA accredited schools is NOT promising.
EDUCATION
The NCA have been endeavoring to step all other Chiropractic publicity than
merely a name, office address, fone number in city directories and fone books. They
try to eliminate ALL publicity methods; want to go professional like medical men.
They ask State Boards to rule out educational matters. YOU know and WE know
that the public MUST BE educated. That is what put us where we are. Imagine what
would occur IF all publicity and educational matter was STOPPED TODAY.
They dont want YOU to say you are a PALMER, LOGAN, or CLEVELAND
GRADUATE or any other reputable ICA institution. They want you to eliminate the
mention of NCM, NCGH, X-RAY, or other CHIROPRACTIC equipment. They
would NOT object IF you advertised any or all of 124 medical methods. Codes of
Ethics when the Chiropractor IS ChiropracTICTHAT is objectionable. THAT is
NOT professionally ethical.
Chiropractors everywhere, straights AND mixers alike, are
[8]

beginning to realize that The NCA has gone overboard as pro-medical, thus
automatically being anti-chiropractic. They are beginning to see the handwriting on
the wall that unless they begin DEFENDING AND PRACTICING AN ALLINCLUSIVE CHIROPRACTIC and all-EXCLUSIVE MEDICINE program,
chiropracTIC will be lost to them and their practices. The tables ARE turning
against all pro-medical and anti-chiropractic methods. They are beginning to see
that chiropractic has gone overboard invading the fields OF MEDICINE. They are
BEGINNING to see that medical men respect US AND WHAT WE STAND
FOR, providing we stay in our own field, in spite of the fact that they deny we have
anything of merit. We belittle THEM for invading OUR field, they do THE SAME
TO US when WE invade THEIR fields. It is right such should be. Most all patients
of chiropractors are medical chronic failures, therefore these patients NEED
WHAT WE HAVE if they want to get sick people well. WE DO NOT NEED what
medical men have unless WE WANT TO CONTINUE FAILING as they have
done thru the centuries.
Every Chiropractor has built his business in exact ratio as his clientele was
educated TO COME to him; then educated AFTER THEY WERE with him; and
KEPT ON educating AFTER they left, so THEY would educate others and more
people TO COME TO HIM. Medical men get gobs free. EducateIT PAYS
DIVIDENDS. Be sure WHAT you educate IS THE PRINCIPLE. Dont help
MEDICAL Chiropractors ADVERTISE medicines IN THE NAME OF
CHIROPRACTIC.
Any village, city, state, or nation has millions who never have heard the
name, much less know WHAT Chiropractic IS. They think we punch backbones for
backaches.
Millions of people are sick. Medical men manufacture business FOR US. As
long as there is ONE medical man in business, there is a need for ONE
Chiropractor to follow his footsteps.
Our success was and is based on millions of educational material. This is NO
TIME TO REDUCE. It IS time TO INCREASE educational campaigns.

Im going to beat somebody to the punch, who will say, He has a printing
plant; he prints the stuff and sells it. Youre right! However, theres something
bigger than owning a printing plant and SELLING educational matter. Its those
millions out there in those great big wide open spaces who are suffering, begging,
pleading, praying to know WHAT you do and TO GET what YOU have to give.
This CAN occur if YOU TELL THEM LONG ENUF AND OFTEN ENUF.
Follow in the footsteps of the NCA, youll starve to death for the want of patients.
Medical men would be delighted if THEY could stop
[9]

our publicity and public relations. Why should THEY when the NCA wants to do it
for us?

The burden is getting heavier because of tactics used by the NCA sacrificing
TIC by persuading TOR that he will profit more by becoming a second-handed or
third-rate practitioner of medical principles and methods.
Ironically, as Chiropractors are encouraged by the NCA to become medical
practitioners, the AMA Journal and other medical publications are encouraging
medical men to investigate and use Chiropractic.
We won victory after victory in years past in our campaigns to establish
Chiropractic as a separate and distinct health service to the sick. We won because
we had courage and convictions. We won because the Chiropractic principle and
practice got sick people well after other methods failed. Regardless of what the
NCA says to the contrary, the TIC has not failed the TOR. It is the TOR who
has failed the TIC that threatens our healthy growth and perpetuation of TIC as a
service to the sick.
You and we have fought for that TIC. Well continue to fight as long as Innate
gives us power to do so. We need your help now, more so than in earlier years.
We need the strength and support of the newer generation who know that TIC must
be perpetuated. Let us say to you younger folks, the TIC is worth fighting for; it will
bring rewards and compensations no matter how rough and tough some battles in its
behalf may become.
That old-time spiritual uplift of ChiropracTIC for ChiropracTORS, and
ChiropracTORS for ChiropracTIC, and BOTH for ChiropracTIC and
ChiropracTORS vigilantly defending the rights of the sick to get well, is being
smothered, choked into submission, everything else but. Today, it STILL is here, in
MANY places, in MANY of our people who, in innocence are being led to the
NCA slaughter.
Tomorrow, unless the betrayal of Chiropractic program is stopped,
ChiropracTIC as a distinct health service to the sick gradually will disappear
because the TIC will have evolved into a mess of conflicting principles and
procedures.
The NCA legislative program and its so-called progressive practice procedures
is leading to the ultimate sacrifice of the TIC.
The Innate in the head, from above-down inside-out, tells the body HOW to
wag the tail of our ChiropracTIC dog. The NCA thru a small group of medicallyminded men are LEGISLATIVELY tickling the tip of the tail of the dog, from
outside-in, below-up, so the tickling stimuli can tell the body, so the body can tell
the head, so the head can tell Innate HOW to wag the tail of our CHIROPRACTIC
dog.
[ 10 ]

It NEVER has been a question of WHO was right, but WHAT is right!

WHAT has been prominent in producing THESE DECREASES in our

profession?
Four-year courses, basic science bills, state boards, and subjects deemed
unnecessary; two-year pre-collegiate training is said to be essential.
While the NCA was PILING ON more time, more subjects, building UP a
gigantic educational program for NCA conventions to absorb and support, the AMA
was CUTTING DOWN TIME, SUBJECTS, AND COSTS, to produce MORE
M.D.s.
These unnecessary subjects never WERE necessary in olden days; neither are
they helpful today. Most NOW are far-flung from ANY relation TO the
Chiropractic subluxation or its adjustment which got sick well THEN OR NOW.
Two years of pre-college training, conducted by men trained in medicine, weans
prospects FROM us, NOT towards us. What little they get OF CHIROPRACTIC in
some of our schools, today, is highly diluted with WASTED time on FOREIGN
subjects, having NO bearing on the vertebral subluxation or its adjustment
To make more rapid this downfall, the NCA is FORCING our profession to
take on legislative crutches, filling students brains with useless and worthless
subjects, at an expense beyond the reach of many. It costs the student more for a 4year course in CHIROPRACTIC than to study a 4-year course IN MEDICINE.
Medical colleges are endowed, state supported, and tax protected. Medical students
pay less per semester. The NCA is responsible for advocating and supporting this
propaganda, this cut-throating OF CHIROPRACTIC.
That YEAR OF DECISION HAS ARRIVED, when the name of John J.
Nugent will go DOWN into chiropractic history as THE JUDAS who betrayed
chiropractic. Ever since B. J. exposed HIM and his legislative machinations,
publicly, at a dinner honoring Wm. Werner at the Hotel McAlpin on Bills 25th
year of practice in New York, where over 400 chiropractors booed him, John
Nugent has had but ONE ULTERIOR dominant motiveto seek the personal and
professional revenge downfall of B. J. and EVERYTHING CHIROPRACTIC he
stood for or was connected with. John Nugents influence is rapidly decreasing
even in NCA circles, from its Officers down to the rank and file of its membership.
The NCA hierarchy has as little use for John Nugent now, because of his
educational programs killing off NCA accredited schools as much as The NCA
dislikes ME, but for two different obvious reasons. If, in destroying
CHIROPRACTIC, he could destroy B. J., he would be gratified.
[ 11 ]

Raise any discussion about B. J. to John Nugent and he flies off into a towering
rage like a madman.
CHIROPRACTIC is greater than any man or any set of men in our ranks,
including ourself.

THE RECORD SPEAKS

Check the record. Read the NCA Journal. Page after page of MEDICAL ads.
Attend an NCA convention; speakers and subjects discussed are largely pro-medical
and anti-chiropractic EXCEPT FOR NAME. ninety-five per cent of NCA exhibits
are medical. They go home pumped full of virus injections of anti-chiropractic promedical theories and failures. They leave with minds muddled, confused, muddied
with medical theories which never worked, dont work now. They are
indoctrinated to doubt all things vital to the perpetuation and preservation of
Chiropractic.
The NCA wants our profession to be looked up to, respected, so our people can
take a social standing in society, going the way osteopathy has gone. They want
legal respectability. They ask legislatures for licenses. THEY GOT THEM. For 30
years, when we were growing, the ONLY respect we wanted, needed, was support
and respectability we gained FROM THE PUBLIC who had been sick, tried
everything in medicine, went to a Chiropractor, took adjustments, and got well.
WHAT MORE DID WE NEED THEN, and WHAT MORE do we have a right to
have now? Today we are on the legislative greased toboggan, downgrade, because
we couldnt be satisfied with PUBLIC SUPPORT by doing the ONE thing medical
men could not doGET SICK PEOPLE WELL.

Are Medical Men Seeing Values in Chiropractic?

Are Chiropractors stealing values in medicine? See The NCA Journals.
RED DEER DOCTORS WORK
WITH CHIROPRACTIC METHODS
The news that a couple of Red Deer medical doctorsW. B. Parsons,
M.D. and J. D. A. Cumming, M.D.have begun to practice manipulation,
usually considered the sphere of chiropractors, seems likely to shake
some members of the profession rigid.
Manipulators Prosperous
The manipulating pair have a long article in the July issue of the
Canadian Medical Association Journal.
They begin by pointing to the fact that though
[ 12 ]

many condemn the practice, patients still flock to those who

manipulate for relief. While doctors limit treatment for backaches to
bed, rest and sedation, patients are finding they can get rapid relief
elsewhere without loss of time.
On the other hand, they say, the irregular practitioners who do the
manipulating and often relieve pain are mainly mechanics who, because
they lack training in pathology, make fantastic claims as to conditions they
can cure.
Joined Them
The purpose of their paper, the doctors say, is to describe manipulation
methods which have brought satisfying results for 20 years with none of
the disasters so many predict.
They admit they were prompted to investigate manipulation because
so many patients found relief from chiropractors after failing to
respond to routine medical treatment. Their motto was: If you cant
whip em, join em.
The main argument of the Red Deer pair is that while chiropractors are
rightly condemned for treating conditions beyond their scope, it is
unfortunate that the ancient art of manipulative surgery is included in this
disrepute.

AN NCA DELEGATE SPEAKS

August 15, 1958.
Dear Dr. Palmer:
I address you on my NCA Delegate letter head because I have
fearlessly fought for unity in Public Relations and because I believe that it
is our only chance for survival. If Chiropractic is sold to the people
and our practitioners find that the demand is for chiropractic other
therapies will tend to disappear. Economic pressure has been the reason
for much mixing. Our colleges need to devote more time to
CHIROPRACTIC education. Our profession needs to talk to the people
with one voice and one language.
While I have sharply been in disagreement with you on many
occasions I have always greatly admired YOUR CONSISTENT
ADVOCACY OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CHIROPRACTIC.
Undoubtedly you personally have DONE MORE TO TAKE THE MES[ 13 ]

SAGE OF CHIROPRACTIC TO THE PEOPLE THAN ANY OTHER

MAN DEAD OR ALIVE; PERHAPS MORE THAN ANY GROUP. The
need for ACTION is now more pressing and of greater vital necessity than
ever before.
If Chiropractors everywhere believe in the basic principles of
chiropractic there is no good reason why they cannot agree on UNITY IN
ACTION to sell Chiropractic to the people. Chiropractic is the ONE and
ONLY thing which all other methods of healing DO NOT POSSESS. It is
the ONE and ONLY thing WHICH MAKES US DISTINCTLY
DIFFERENT; THE ONLY THING WHICH JUSTIFIES OUR
EXISTENCE IN THE HEALING ARTS. WE HAD BETTER COME TO
THIS REALIZATION BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
As greater demand for chiropractic services increases ALL of our
problems are easier of solution.
Sincerely,
Dan W. Poupard, D.C.
(NCA) State Delegate,
Pittsburgh, Penna.

A.M.A. FACTS
Apropos of this trick of who is stealing what from whom, let us quote what
Richard M. Stalway, Chicago, Illinois, from the Bureau of Investigation,
AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, says:
Therefore, chiropractic has not changed, but IT IS DOUBTFUL
WHETHER THIS in any way may be construed a change for the better.
Rather, isnt it just another ATTEMPT BY UNQUALIFIED PERSONS to
enter the practice of medicine through the basement?
This years annual NCA convention was held at the Morrison Hotel in
Chicago in July. The convention WAS ORGANIZED SOMEWHAT LIKE
AN A.M.A. CONVENTION.
FROM THE JARGON THAT WAS BEING THROWN ABOUT,
had you been transported there suddenly, AT FIRST YOU WOULDNT
HAVE KNOWN WHETHER YOU WERE AT A MEDICAL MEETING
OR A CHIROPRACTIC MEETING.
There were about 45 commercial exhibits. Among these exhibits were
SOME WHICH PREVIOUSLY HAD BEEN SHOWN AT VARIOUS
MEDICAL AND SURGICAL MEETINGS.
[ 14 ]

Among other RECOGNIZED MEDICAL BOOKS were the A.M.A.

NEW AND NON-OFFICIAL REMEDIES AND THE ENCYCLOPEDIA
OF SURGICAL SPECIALTIES. ODDLY ENOUGH THERE WERE NO
CHIROPRACTIC BOOKS TO BE SEEN AT THESE BOOTHS, ONLY
MEDICAL AND SURGICAL.
Such
chiropractic
INSTRUMENTS
AS
SCALPELS,
hemacytometers, and LANCET SETS WERE ON DISPLAY.
The regular vitamin and health-food products that one USUALLY
SEES AT CHIROPRACTIC OR NATUROPATHIC CONVENTIONS
WERE THERE.
Many of the devices and products on display have been subject to
regulatory action by government agencies. VERBAL MISBRANDING BY
THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS COMMON.
THE GOAL of the Chiropractor IS TO ACHIEVE AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE STATUS OSTEOPATHY ENJOYS TODAY.
Standards for approved schools are set forth in the booklet
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS FOR CHIROPRACTIC SCHOOLS.
THIS BOOK HAS A GREAT DEAL IN COMMON WITH THE AMAs
ESSENTIALS OF APPROVED MEDICAL SCHOOLS. In fact, COMPLETE PASSAGES HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM THE A.M.A.
PUBLICATION AND OTHER PARTS HAVE APPARENTLY BEEN
PARAPHRASED.
There IS NO DOUBT THAT THE CHIROPRACTORS ARE
ATTEMPTING to give the appearance of providing A SOUND
EDUCATION IN THE MEDICAL SUBJECTS.
It is apparent from these statements and from the other indications that
CHIROPRACTIC IS ATTEMPTING TO EVOLVE INTO THE
PRACTICE OF MEDICINE WITHOUT RESTRICTION. THEY are
relying ON PROPAGANDA AND CLEVER PUBLICATIONS TO GIVE
THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY ARE QUALIFIED PHYSICIANS. IT
MAY BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR LAY PERSONS TO TELL
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHIROPRACTIC SCHOOL AND A
MEDICAL SCHOOL IF THEY CONSIDER ONLY WHAT THE
CHIROPRACTORS THEMSELVES CLAIM TO BE.
CHIROPRACTORS ARE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER INTO THE
PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. They feel they can bring this about
LEGALLY by INCREASING THE SCOPE OF CHIROPRACTIC
LICENSURE ACTS.
[ 15 ]

THEIR PRIMARY IMMEDIATE GOAL SEEMS TO BE THE STATUS

THAT OSTEOPATHY now enjoys. * * * But even if ALL THEIR
SCHOOLS SHOULD ACHIEVE THE APPROVED label, it would not
change THE REAL STATE OF AFFAIRS. From the evidence available the
schools are WHOLLY INADEQUATE AND INCAPABLE OF
PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE.
If a person desires to assume the responsibilities for the MEDICAL
CARE OF PEOPLE, LET THEM ENTER THE FIELD THROUGH THE
FRONT DOOR, NOT THE CELLAR.

WHO ARE THIEVES?

Medical men have NOTHING TO LOSE when they forsake medicine and
EVERYTHING TO GAIN when they steal chiropractic. Chiropractors have
EVERYTHING TO LOSE when they forsake Chiropractic and nothing to gain
when they STEAL MEDICINE.

Two pertinent statements, proving what is happening in Germany, was

contained in Dr. Janses article in the Sept. 58 NCA Journal, after his return from
The ECU Convention in London:
Germans, aware of the ever increasing INCLUSION OF
CHIROPRACTIC WITHIN the practice OF OTHER practitioners, seeking
a solution for this trend and, AS YET, FINDING NONE.
* * * concise propositions, but careful investigation OF THE
GERMAN SITUATION * * * has led me to believe that two things ARE
POSSIBLE IN Germany * * * the FULL RECOGNITION OF CHIROPRACTIC AS A DISTINCT SEPARATE PROFESSION BY THE WEST
GERMAN (medical) government IN BONN.
ONE THING IS CERTAIN: that if within the next few years OUR
PROFESSION OR ANY SEGMENT OF IT is not in a position to make a
move IN GERMANY, THE PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC will
become fully INCORPORATED WITH AND CONTROLLED BY TWO
SCHOOLS OF HEALING, e. g., THE REGULAR SCHOOL OF
MEDICAL AND SURGICAL PRACTICE, and those who belong to a
group of organized physical therapists, bone setters, naturopaths, and
homeopaths. * * *

Seemingly, Dr. Janse deplores, by implication, such will

[ 16 ]

come to pass. He suggests, by inference, that such would sound the death knell OF
CHIROPRACTIC AS A SEPARATE AND DISTINCT PROFESSION, if such
should come to pass.
We have been sounding this warning, IN OUR PROFESSION, HERE for
years. WHAT DR. JANSE DEPLORES IS HAPPENING IN GERMANY, IS
EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE.
The NCA IS ACTUALLY DOING HERE AT HOME WHAT DR. JANSE
DEPLORES IS HAPPENING IN Germany. We suggest, Dr. Janse get on ONE
SIDE OF THIS FENCE OR THE OTHER AND HELP save it here at home
before it is too late. Someday, this straddling the fence will catch up WITH HIM
AND RUIN HIS SCHOOL ALSO, especially when CHIROPRACTIC is being
taught in medical colleges IN CHICAGO. It will be too late, THEN, to feel sorry
for yourself or to tell your people how sorry you are that YOU helped to drive
CHIROPRACTIC INTO MEDICINE.
By so doing, you WILL BE the man your conscience tells you you should be IF
you want to SAVE your institution; or, the day WILL come when you wont have
one, going the way other NCA accredited schools ARE going. The handwriting is
ON the wall right under your nose IN GERMANY. It is ON THE WALLS IN
America, with NCA and YOUR help. Tempus Fugit!

MORE GRUMBLING ABOUT WHO STEALS WHAT

FROM WHOM
CANADIAN CHIROPRACTIC JOURNAL, August, 58, has the following
articles:
The Toronto (Canada) Daily Star of May 18th reports Dr. M. S. Douglas,
retiring president of the Ontario MEDICAL association, as saying that doctors need
to take A CLOSE LOOK at their relationships to the public AND TO ALLIED
HEALING PROFESSIONS .
If other groups active in the healing arts are OF VALUE WE
SHOULD UTILIZE THEM and help SUPERVISE THEIR TRAINING
AND THEIR fields of activity.
The Toronto Daily Star comments:
From OUR point of view, IF Dr. Douglas suggestion is taken
seriously, it would mean a summit conference BETWEEN THE
MEDICAL AND CHIROPRACTIC professions. * * * In the meantime,
THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THE VALUE OF Chiropractic methods
has been WELL RECOGNIZED BY MEMBERS OF THE MEDICAL
PROFESSION. Instead of
[ 17 ]

UTILIZING CHIROPRACTORS, however, as Dr. Douglas suggests, IT IS

BECOMING COMMON IN MEDICAL journals to read THAT ALL
MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS SHOULD USE CHIROPRACTIC
PROCEDURES themselves in THEIR PRIVATE PRACTICE. THUS
INVADING THE field of practice of the chiropractor.
In another section of this issue there is an article from a MEDICAL
bulletin in British Columbia IN WHICH THE MEDICAL READERS
ARE ADVISED SERIOUSLY TO PRACTICE CHIROPRACTIC METHODS ON THEIR WIVES AND COLLEAGUES AND THEN APPLY IT
TO THEIR PATIENTS. THIS, without any formal training in spinal
manipulation, if you please. WHO IS TAKING THE SHORT COURSE
NOW ?
In official MEDICAL journals there appear frequently, articles
describing in detail the methods of manipulation THAT SHOULD BE
USED TO RELIEVE NERVE PRESSURE OR NERVE IRRITATION IN
THE SPINE. THE METHODS DESCRIBED ARE THOSE USED BY
CHIROPRACTORS FOR HALF A CENTURY AND THE SAME ONES
THAT MEDICINE HAS SO ARDENTLY RIDICULED FOR THE
SAME PERIOD OF TIME.
The GERMAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION APPROACHED THE
EUROPEAN CHIROPRACTIC UNION TO SUGGEST THAT A
CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE BE ESTABLISHED IN EUROPE WHERE
MEMBERS OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION COULD TAKE A
POSTGRADUATE COURSE IN CHIROPRACTIC. * * * THIS
APPROACH TO THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION FOR THE
THERAPY IT HAS DEVELOPED.

Under heading MEDICAL ENIGMA (P. 6, Canadian Chiropractic Journal)

we find:
One of the greatest therapeutic puzzles of our time NOW FACES the
MEDICAL profession and their attempts. SOMETIMES IT BACKFIRES.
THE QUESTION IS HOW CAN MEDICINE UTILIZE THE
ADVANCES MADE BY THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION,
WITHOUT OPENLY ADMITTING THE VALUE OF CHIROPRACTIC
PROCEDURES?
In Quebec, in 1957, MEDICAL arguments against a licensing bill for
chiropractors stated that chiropractic methods were not scientific but that
medical schools
[ 18 ]

WERE
TEACHING
THESE
SAME
METHODS
TO
PHYSIOTHERAPISTS to fill a void in the field of therapy. This is an
example of the steps BEING TAKEN BY MEDICINE TO UTILIZE
CHIROPRACTIC DEVELOPMENTS and at the same time TRY TO
DISCREDIT THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION.

Dr. Homewood, D.C., speaking in behalf of the Canadian Memorial

Chiropractic College, in the Canadian Chiropractic Journal, said (P. 8):
The inquiries relative to the course continue to arrive AND A FEW
applications have been completed. IT IS OUR FOND HOPE that a large
class will be enrolled for September to compensate for THE SMALL
NUMBER OF LAST YEAR. Tuition HAS HAD TO BE RAISED BY
FIFTY DOLLARS per year to meet the rising costs of operation.
The president of the Alumni Association has recently sent out a letter
explaining THE FINANCIAL NEED OF THE C.M.C.C. AT THIS TIME
THERE is little need to labour the point.
Dr. Homewood further said:
Remember, there are no tax dollars, or large endowments, for Lincoln
College at the present time, and those extra dollars to educate the students
presently enrolled and future students MUST BE FOUND, EARNED,
BEGGED, AND CONNIVED, no doubt by your president.

In this same Journal, P. 25, under the heading

GERMAN M.D.S ACCEPT CHIROPRACTIC PRINCIPLE
we find:
Today, one of the most admirable expressions of the true spirit of
science has been shown BY THE GERMAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.
These MEDICAL doctors have enjoyed a reputation for remarkable
efficiency, and have turned to their laboratories and dissecting rooms TO
PROVE THE PRINCIPLES OF CHIROPRACTIC AND THE
CONDITIONS PRESCRIBED BY CHIROPRACTIC AS EXISTING IN
THE SPINE. As a result of this scientific investigation spirit, 75% OF
GERMANYS
MEDICAL
DOCTORS
HAVE
ADOPTED
CHIROPRACTIC TECHNIQUES.
Dr. Weiant found the largest circulating newspapers and magazines
IN GERMANY giving remarkable coverage TO THE DISCOVERY OF
THE GREAT HEALING PRINCIPLES BEING PERFORMED BY
[ 19 ]

CHIROPRACTIC. WITHOUT BEING DETERRED by the fact that

chiropractic principles DIFFER FROM ORTHODOX MEDICAL
SCIENCE, without committing THE GRAVE SCIENTIFIC SIN of
condemning without investigation, THE GERMAN MEDICAL PROFESSION WENT TO WORK to find out for themselves. THEY FIRST
TESTED CHIROPRACTIC PROCEDURES ON THOUSANDS OF
PATIENTS IN THEIR CLINICS WITH EXTREMELY GRATIFYING
RESULTS * * *
With cold, unemotional scientific stubbornness, Dr. Peter Duus, a
German Neurologist, prepared thousands of sections of the nerve opening
and studied them microscopically. HE FOUND COMPLETE AND UNASSAILABLE PROOF that this narrowing of THE NERVE SPACE
DOES OCCUR AND is accompanied by a FLATTENING * * * AND
OTHER PATHOLOGICAL CHANGES WITH EXTREME PRESSURES
UPON THE NERVE TRUNK.
The findings of other German researchers confirmed one another. Dr.
Zukschweridt, professor of surgery at the University of Hamburg,
REPORTED 2,400 CASES OF SLIPPED DISCS STATING THAT 90%
RESPONDED TO CHIROPRACTIC WITHOUT RECOURSE TO
SURGERY.
Chiropractic is NOW being accepted as scientifically CORRECT
THROUGHOUT the civilized world and is on the very eve of
conferring its services to the entire human race.

IF all THESE STATEMENTS be true, and we proved them such about 15

years ago when we dissected quick frozen bodies at the Spaltaholtz Labs in
Dresden, Germany, under Drs. Guenther and Mueller, which proof we brot home
and now have pictorially in our Osteo Lab and have written reports on our findings,
THEN WHY IS THE NCA HEADING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION,
ENCOURAGING, AIDING AND ABETTING in every, any and many ways to
direct CHIROPRACTORS TO USING any, every and many ways to go INTO
MEDICINE?
With MEDICAL men doing what is stated in these quotesall of which IS
TRUE, which we mentioned several years ago when WE were invited to appear and
speak to these German medical doctors; and if what we have shown in this Bulletin
is the one direct road The NCA is assuming in driving CHIROPRACTIC INTO
MEDICINEWHERE IS CHIROPRACTIC TO GO? Will the tables turn? Will
chiropractors become MEDICAL practitioners? Will MEDICAL MEN become
CHIROPRAC[ 20 ]

TORS? Will chiropractic go down the route OF OSTEOPATHY AND be

ENTIRELY ABSORBED into medicine? Is CHIROPRACTIC to cease to be a
distinct and independent profession? It so appears! THE TIME IS LONG GONE
BY WHEN CHIROPRACTORS CAN SIT IDLY BY AND continue to encourage
THE NCA to drive CHIROPRACTIC into medicine. IF CHIROPRACTORS want
to save themselves as chiropractors, want to save chiropractic AS A
PROFESSION, want to save chiropractic as a distinct profession, IT IS TIME
THEY RISE UP AND SPEAK THEIR RESENTMENTS TO WHAT THE NCA
IS DOING. NOW is the HOUR FOR ACTION, not tomorrow. You are the men to
do so. Whether you like it or not, the contrasts OF WHAT IS ACTUALLY
OCCURRING IS BEFORE YOU, EVIDENCE, PROOF. Either you wake up
and act now or the day is upon us where we go their way and they come ours.

NCA P. R. MAN REPUDIATES

NCA POLICIES AND PROGRAMS AND RESIGNS
Jack Hess, Public Relations, Advertising Promotion, says:
Because the Charles O. Puffer Company is primarily an advertising
agency, they asked Jack Hess, in 1955, WHEN THEY ACQUIRED THE
National Chiropractic Association as a CLIENT, TO ORIGINATE ALL
IDEAS, WRITE ALL MATERIAL, AND GUIDE THE COURSE of that
organization ON THE PROFESSIONAL AND POLITICAL LEVEL.
Since that time, Hess performed these duties from his own office.
Therefore, he has been a middleman working for a fee, AND
PROTESTING MANY OF THE POLICIES of both the NATIONAL
ASSOCIATION AND THE ILLINOIS CHIROPRACTIC SOCIETY.
Right before the break with Charles O. Puffer, Hess had PREPARED
and ORIGINATED IN ITS ENTIRETY THE ENTIRE PUBLIC
RELATIONS PLAN FOR 1958 OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION.
AS USUAL THERE WERE ARGUMENTS concerning matters of broad
policy. It is a known factwithin that organizationthat HESS
DISAGREED COMPLETELY WITH THE MORE RABID AND
BITTER ELEMENTS AND THUS INCURRED SOME ENMITY.
Hess was ridiculed in 1955, when he first pointed out THE
PROGRAM OF THE A.M.A. Before writing the speeches for many of the
directors at a special meeting. The results of that research produced A
COMPLETE LACK OF REALISM. IT ALSO PRODUCED
[ 21 ]

SOME VERY WILD IDEAS for a FRATRICIDAL SELL OUT OF

CHIROPRACTORS WITH DIFFERING PRINCIPLES.
Hess originated the NCA Public Relations Manual, wrote them, and
produced their pressbooks. HE HAS ORIGINATED ALL THEIR
CONSTRUCTIVE IDEASin fact HE HAS HIS OWN DRAFTS OF
ALL THE SPEECHES * * * AND SOME OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
BOARD AT THEIR CONVENTIONS, and can show those portions
which were eliminated AS BEING TOO FRIENDLY TO OTHER
GROUPSbut why this should be singular when there are only two
involvedIS PART OF THE VERBAL OBFUSCATION IN WHICH
MANY OF THESE PEOPLE LIVE.

Too many of our people like to prattle about common ground, neutral
territory, public domain, that NCA advertises and radio advertises and sells
Aspirin, Alka-Seltzer and many other drugs, all of which, and more, can be bought
anywhere by anybodyall of which IS TRUEBUT, and here comes the hitch
with a chiropractor, when HE PRESCRIBES, OR SELLS any drug, consistently, to
patients in his practice, FOR A FEE to alleviate or cure diseases of his patients, he
is PRACTICING MEDICINE WITHOUT A LICENSE. Upon this legal
interpretation hangs 99% of malpractice suits, for mal means mad and mad
practice is any and all things OUTSIDE the purview of THE CHIROPRACTIC
PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE. The dividing line is sharply drawnANYTHING GIVEN, APPLIED to, OR PRESCRIBED FROM OUTSIDE-IN,
BELOW-UP comes within the PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE OF MEDICINE.
None of this does CHIROPRACTIC DO! Our principle is opposite, antipodal, the
reverse, for EVERYTHING WITHIN the chiropractic philosophy, science and art
works FROM ABOVE-DOWN, INSIDE-OUT. Anything and everything WITHIN
that scope IS chiropractic. Anything and everything OUTSIDE that scope is
MEDICINE, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.
I would rather be a Chiropractor with one simple principle and practice
WHICH WORKS, AND GETS SICK PEOPLE WELL, AND BE CALLED
IGNORANT, than be a supra-educated medical man with millions of arbitrary
and empiric theories, none of which work OR GET SICK PEOPLE WELL. BEST
evidence and proof is that many leading, progressive, HONEST medical men are
rapidly forsaking MUCH in medicine and ARE absorbing MUCH in Chiropractic,
even tho by other names. By concealed contrast, the NCA advocates, encourages,
and legislatively DEMANDS our profession to forsake basic
[ 22 ]

fundamentals of Chiropractic and absorb most everything being forsaken by medical

men.

In THOSE good old days, we received letters asking for the name and address
of a CHIROPRACTOR. In THOSE days we could send patients to ANYBODY,
knowing they WOULD get an adjustment. Today, we receive letters saying,
Where can I find A CHIROPRACTOR WHO WILL GIVE ME AN
ADJUSTMENT ?
Today, we dont know WHOM to send inquiries to. Some of our people are
one thing today, tomorrow something else, running the gauntlet of experimentation
of medical theories, treatments, and technics, TRYING to deliver what they were
not educated to give and are incompetent doing what they profess to be.
Today, we are paying A TERRIFIC price for quasi medical respectability at
the expense of murdering and raping Chiropractic. Some NCA men prefer medical
respectability with Chiropractic failure. I would rather BE a Chiropractor getting
sick people well.

In earlier days, we were EDUCATIONALLY FREE men and women. We had

EVERY reason to know what was good, right, which got sick people well. In those
early days, many who were sick took adjustments, got well, and became imbued
with the high ideals of returning health and life they received to others who were
suffering as they had been.
In earlier days, we PROFESSIONALLY were a small handful of rugged
pioneers of FREE people. We could AND DID serve our fellow man as our
consciences dictated. We followed the golden rule, not the rule of gold.
In earlier days, we LEGISLATIVELY were medical slaves, suffering under
the yoke and lash of medical tyranny and domination. Arrested, tried, convicted,
branded as criminals, sent to jailsome as long as one year at hard labor. Thanks
be to the courageous spirit of those days, we had Chiropractors of conviction who
were willing and ready TO PAY THE PRICE to preserve this principle and
practice, to pass on its benefits serving the sick and dying people who could not and
did not get well under medical legislative cut-throat controls.
Today, EDUCATIONALLY, some of our schools ARE SLAVES to their fears.
They teach what some State Boards demand, an endless list of subjects far
removed, having NO relationship TO or WITH Chiropractic.
Today, PROFESSIONALLY, we have TWO associations: the ICA
endeavoring to keep our profession FREE men and women, that they may learn,
think, practice, unmolested by any
[ 23 ]

NCA handful desiring to dominate and usurp compulsion.

Today, our PROFESSION is becoming legislative SLAVES, regimented by an
NCA organization that has LONG lost sight OF CHIROPRACTIC and
ChiropracTORS, or saving lives of sick people except for tacking on its good name.
Today, it is THEIR desire to control, LIMIT by laws, unreasonable State
Boards, FORCED to attend a two-day session in THEIR State to get THEIR license
renewed. No longer can you pick when, what YOU want to do, or where to go to
learn to do. LEGISLATIVELY it is their intent you MUST go WHERE the NCA
says, WHEN the NCA says, and listen to what THEY FORCE you to listen to,
willy-nilly, whether you like it or not, oppose it, or deny it. If you DONT, your
license is NOT renewed, your practice is destroyed, the sick go on suffering. Those
good old days of a Chiropractic profession FREE TO COME AND GO AT WILL,
ARE BEING DESTROYED.

The NCA, in the August 58 Journal, says:

* * * that ALL STATES SHOULD HAVE EDUCATIONAL
LICENSE renewal legislation.
which takes us back to the MEDICAL tyrannical days, which smacks too much like
FORCING A Christian to attend a Buddhist church for two days to listen to
Buddhist heresy lectures and sermons, contrary to his Christian beliefs and faith,
BEFORE he can secure the PRIVILEGE of getting a renewal of his license to
practice his OWN beliefs and faith of Christianity. Early Pilgrims were granted
RELIGIOUS freedom. Lets have CHIROPRACTIC professional freedom!

Regardless of what I advocated THEN OR NOW to be right or wrong, I

NEVER have requested, suggested, advocated, encouraged, believed in, or asked
for ANY restrictionslegislative or otherwise. From the beginning, I have opposed
ANY KIND of regimentation of all by legislation, be it good or bad, preferring the
rights of EDUCATIONAL FREEDOM from which the listener could make his
choice. Years ago, I saw WHAT HAS SINCE COME TO PASS, that derogatory
interests, for commercial aggrandizement reasons, have seen fit to strangulate
ChiropracTIC and our ChiropracTORS to the detriment of HIS rights or rights OF
THE SICK to get well.
What faults we MIGHT have in SOME respects, we always have OPPOSED
any and all legislative CONTROL methods of the rights of the sick to get well,
knowing as we did the evils that lurk in the heads, hearts, and hands of SOME men
who would forcibly regulate its INTEMPERATE RESTRICTIONS to their own
benefits. That is ONE crime that cannot be laid
[ 24 ]

at OUR door. History records that those WHO HAVE SUFFERED MOST
UNDER TYRANNY become the most heinous tyrants when they come into power.
Chiropractic regimentation legislation has been no exception to that rule.
Chiropractors should be FREE mortals and need not be legislatively herded like
cattle; neither do they desire to be legislatively lashed to any COMPULSORY
AND DICTATORIAL opinions of a few men to be COMPELLED to do what those
few are endeavoring to FORCE them to do, forcing them to confine themselves
within the borders of ONE state, year after year, under penalty of losing their
licenses if they seek intellectual guidance elsewhere, furthering intellectual pursuits
of MORE CHIROPRACTIC learning and knowledge.
The NCA theory is that within the borders of individual states is ALL the
knowledge he SHALL get; that within each state is all the knowledge of proficiency
and efficiency to learn ALL worth while to improve his service to the sick of that
particular state. Outside of any state, there ARE institutions of learning, NOT
UNDER LEGISLATIVE DOMINANCE, WHO CAN AND DO impart
IMPROVED principles and practices of Chiropractic which COULD AND
WOULD improve service to the sick. Such attendance IN OTHER PLACES should
be OF RIGHT HIS CHOICE, where he CAN exercise his OWN FREE WILL to
attend or not as he sees fit and still get his license renewed WITHOUT
LEGISLATIVE COERCION.
This plea for Chiropractic professional FREEDOM is no longer FROM YOU
TO US TO LET US DO ALL the work. This is OUR plea TO YOU which YOU
can and must do. This IS a plea for UNITED ACTION BETWEEN US, to retain
and reserve individual FREEDOMS, from your General to his Army. If YOU fail to
do your part. WE fail. IF you ACT. WE act.

EVIDENCE
You MAY think WE exaggerate the seriousness of these crimes perpetrated
and committed today by the NCA. We have an unlimited constant state-wide,
national, and international flow of data coming to our hub of everything for or
against Chiropractic, involving rights of ChiropracTORS to practice without
molestation. We have the over-all, all-seeing, all-understanding abilities to evaluate
facts as they accumulate. The same legislative power THAT GAVE can be taken
away, if improperly influenced by scheming smooth-talking culprits.
Many a sincere and honest person, INACTIVE in protecting Chiropractic and
Chiropractors, lives a narrow path from home to office, office to home, wakes up
some day to realize he has lost his practice because he failed to defend his free
rights.
[ 25 ]

You have cases; you are often self-satisfied that what YOU do in YOUR OFFICE
is self-sufficient to guarantee you a lifetime service; that your inactive practice is
secure; that my wife, son and daughter, and myselfwe four and no more are all
that need be considered. Neither do you realize that constant vigilance is vitally
important to prevent scheming shysters from destroying those rights, forcing you to
lose your license.
The SAME legislative body that GAVE is the SAME power that CAN TAKE
AWAY unless YOU are alert. There IS something BIGGER and more important
outside YOUR limited scopeYOUR limited horizons. That your liberties and
privileges ARE NOW jeopardized is obvious. They are attacked and are breaking
down under that pressure.

GEORGIA GETS INFORMATION

Georgia Chiropractic Association, Inc.
September 3, 1958
Dr. B. J. Palmer, Pres. ICA
741 Brady Street
Davenport, Iowa
Dear B. J.:
In view of the various rumors and half truths that constantly travel
around the chiropractic profession, I have decided to write you this letter so
that you may be able to help clear up some of the misunderstandings that
now seem to be present in Georgia.
A similar letter is being sent to Dr. Wm. A. Watkinson, President of
the NCA. It is my desire as president of the Georgia association to find out
where we stand nationally so that our membership will get the information
from the horses mouth.
I am enclosing a series of questions that I will appreciate your
answering to the best of your ability and returning to me as quickly as
possible. These questions will be based upon many of the statements
relative to the ICA and the NCA attitudes. I realize some of them are quite
pointed but it is the only way we can bring out the facts in order to quell
rumors that may be untruthful and unfair.
I also must advise you that these letters and answers to the questions
will be read to the membership during the Presidents report at the October
meeting. If no answer is returned it will also be made a convention
knowledge.
We hope to bring about professional unity if at all possible but many
members feel that the profession
[26]

has been upset by information passed down from the NCA and ICA. Would
also appreciate your comment on this.
Will be looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest
convenience. With best regards to you and yours, I am
Yours sincerely,
/s/ W. R. GRIFFIN, D.C.
Dr. W. R. Griffin,
President-elect
Georgia Chiropractic Association

SERIES OF QUESTIONS
1. Do you intend to try to change the chiropractic law in Georgia in any way
whatsoever? If so, in what way?
2. It has been rumored that your policy is to control the profession on the state level
or cause disunity, is this true. It has also been rumored that you have a policy of
rule or ruin. That is what prompted this question. Please comment.
3. What is the main objective of the ICA as to the future advancement of
chiropractic?
4. Do you believe that unity is possible on a national basis ?
5. Are you willing to give any ground to help promote unity or do you desire the
present situation of disunity?
6. Is it your opinion that states should govern themselves chiropractically or should
they be under the control or influence of one of the National Associations as to
their actions legislatively and otherwise?
7. Do you think there is any great advancement to be made in Chiropractic under the
present state of disunity? If not, in your opinion what can be done about it?
8. Do you feel that a doctor of chiropractic should only adjust the atlas and axis to
be a good chiropractor or should he adjust the whole spine as taught by D. D.
Palmer?

September 5. 1958.
W. R. Griffin, D.C., Pres.-Elect,
Georgia Chiropractic Association
815 Whitaker Street,
Savannah, Georgia.
Dear Dr. Griffin:
It is true, with people, that half-truths are the common method of those
who suffer from an overemotional strain, irate passions, and personal
prejudices.
[27]

It is therefore well that you secure facts from the horses mouth.
We are in favor of quite pointed questions, and give you our answers
in like kind. We have NOTHING to conceal and EVERYTHING to reveal;
therefore, we appreciate the opportunity of your presentation of our answers
to the membership of your association.
1. B. J., The PSC, and ICA always have opposed ANY coercion or
forcible legislative or legal measures taken by any group of chiropractors
aiming to FORCE the other fellow to do what WE THINK HE SHOULD
DO. We believe in an educational process of teaching him what is right or
wrong, letting HIM use his judgment after its presentation. Therefore, the
answer to this question is NO.
2. We have only ONE yardstick by which we ask all chiropractors to
judge our lifes work, viz., there are millions of sick people begging to get
well. Chiropractic does it. Medicine does not do it. We have NO policy
to control, dominate, or coerce any group of our people oh the state
level or any other level. We have no policy to cause disunity. On the
reverse, we are most heartily desirous of unity. Medical men are in
unity ON MEDICINE. Chiropractors should be in unity ON
CHIROPRACTIC. Each profession, regardless of character, should be in
unity on its own level. But there can be NO unity when each and
every other profession tries to slop over into the level of any, every, and
all other professions wherein the principles and practices diametrically
oppose each other.
3. Not only the main objective but THE ONLY objective of the ICA
is to keep chiropracTORS in line with chiropracTIC, which does NOT
mean physiotherapy, naturopathy, pills, drugs, medical adjuncts, or medical
treatments of any, many, or all kinds. How could this answer be stated more
honestly?
4. It is a well established legislative and legal fact, based on
innumerable supreme court decisions, that no contract is valid or legal
unless and until THERE IS A MEETING OF THE MINDS on every
particular detail specified in the contract. The relation between doctor AND
patient is, in effect, a contractual arrangement wherein the doctor agrees to
render a CHIROPRACTIC service, wherein the patient agrees TO
ACCEPT A CHIROPRACTIC service. When the patient finds he is being
given the same principles and practices of medicine that failed, in a
chiropractors
[28]

office, the contract is null and void because a misdirection and

misrepresentation is being delivered WHICH WAS NOT IN THE
CONTRACT. There WILL BE unity between chiropractors, regardless
of level, when every stipulation in the mutual contract between doctor and
patient is lived up to, in delivering a CHIROPRACTIC service as within the
purview of the CHIROPRACTIC principles and practices, well established,
well known, mostly agreed to IN PRINCIPLE and too often DENIED in
practices.
5. ChiropracTIC would be the most wonderful boon to sick people
everywhere IF every chiropractor were such in fact, adhered to honestly,
and practiced within the confines of its principles and practices. We DO
desire CHIROPRACTIC unity, but it cannot be attained with a
CHIROPRACTIC principle and a MEDICAL practice in a
CHIROPRACTORS office. All OUR life has been spent educating
chiropractic students TO BE chiropractors, not bastard physicians or surgeons. The present situation of disunity is injurious, but so long as some
chiropractors want to be everything they are not, and dont want to be
what they should be, there will be disunity in spite of those honest men
in our profession who are what they claim to be.
6. Ever since Kansas asked for the FIRST Chiropractic Practice Act, I
have personally and professionally been OPPOSED TO any and all
legislation governing any body of professional men. We realized then how
vicious were the medical tyrants with their medical tyrannical bills and
boards. We realized that many of our people suffered from medical tyranny,
arrests, convictions, etc. We foresaw that our people would seek, ask for,
and demand Chiropractic Practice Acts. We were certain that when they
came into tyrannical power, they, too, would use coercive methods TO
FORCE others to bend to and knuckle down to their tyrannical pressures.
All this HAS come to pass in SEVERAL states that have a
CHIROPRACTIC (?) Practice Act. We have always adhered to the fundamental principle that those people are best governed who are least
governed. Legislation of our profession NEVER should be under the
control or influence of ANY state or national association. We are suffering
today from too much of such.
7. The mass of people come and go in cycles. They are UP today,
DOWN tomorrow; get their balance, and
[ 29 ]

come UP again. Chiropractic with its growth, life, and death, and its
recovery, is no different. At one time we HAD an all 100 per cent
chiropractic profession. Then came the medical influence creeping in,
running roughshod. DOWN went the CHIROPRACTIC service to the sick.
The last two years, the sane people in our profession are BEGINNING to
recover their balance. Tables ARE turning. Since last year, reliable and
trustworthy people in our ranks are seeing that there CAN BE NO UNITY
of half-something called chiropractic, and the other half-something
belonging to medicine. The only lasting unity lies in educating
chiropractors to CHIROPRACTIC.
The ultimate and distinctive, basic and fundamental difference between
CHIROPRACTIC and ALL OTHER methods is: medicine always has
been, is now, based on THE CAUSE AND CURE OF EVERY DISEASE
WHICH IS PHYSICAL by means of PHYSICAL PROPERTIES which are
given externally or internally FROM OUTSIDE-IN, BELOW-UPWARD.
The ultimate and distinctive, basic and fundamental difference between
CHIROPRACTIC and any, every, and all other methods is:
CHIROPRACTIC always has been, is now, and always will be based on
THE CAUSE AND CURE OF EVERY DIS-EASE IS INTERNAL,
WITHIN THE INDIVIDUAL, and comes from ABOVE-DOWN,
INSIDE-OUT.
There is no middle line or straddling of fences between these two
antipodal principles. If either ONE is right, then so is the other, or vice
versa.
8. The primary, causative vertebral subluxation can be only where
there are NO intervertebral osseous locks, viz., between occipit, atlas, and
axis, except for the odontoid which prevents one direction only. The only
place a causative vertebral subluxation CAN BE adjusted is in that area.
The statement needs some modification. That primary superior
subluxation can and often does produce some vertebral traumatism or
pathology of vertebrae INFERIOR TO THAT AREA. Such conditions can
and do occasionally occlude foramina, produce pressures upon nerves, and
create a SECONDARY TRAUMATIC or pathological INTERFERENCE,
which temporarily NEEDS correction until such time as the superior PRIMARY causative factor IS CORRECTED and restores health to the lower
and inferior pathologies. This factor was well known to my father when he
should adjust
[ 30 ]

the whole spine as taught by D. D. Palmer? HE did NOT adjust the

WHOLE spine; only such places as there WAS a specific subluxation
WITH interference. Read his book and verify this statement.
The majority of Chiropractors are sensible enuf to know that the more
sick people they can get well, quicker, at less cost to them, thus increasing
their percentage of successes and reducing percentage of failures, that all
this makes for spreading more of the good work of their efficiency and
capability to do the thing they claim to do, viz., get sick people well.
When the Chiropractor learns that adjusting atlas or axis does that, then
he, too, becomes a convert to the better way to build a larger clientele. But,
in the process we do not believe in FORCING him to our views, or
legislatively forcing him TO LISTEN TO US PROPOUND THIS TRUTH.
We DO believe in educating him for his own welfare.
Dr. Griffin, if these explanations do not cover information asked for,
come again. You will note that, while we offer explanations, we DO NOT
FORCE OUR OPINIONS DOWN ANYBODYS THROAT, but we do
hope that our answers are educational and enlightening.
We enclose a print copy of letter received today, which explains what
is happening in Washington State.
Sincerely,
B. J.
P. S.: When we spoke before the Senate Health Committee, we
OPPOSED the two year restrictive legislation, NOT FOR IT!

Memo from
HAYNES - THOMPSON
Sept. 3, 1958
Dear B. J.
Man! Your letter in Dec. 1955 surely was right, regarding the inability
of the NCA, ICA and CCA to get together until they agree on the definition
of Chiropractic.
I note that someone is trying to get national legislation, to prevent the
Physical Therapists from doing Chiropractic. It would be fine if we could
get national legislation to keep the D.C. from doing P. Therapy! If we could
only get a national definition on all: Drugless Therapeutics, Physical
Therapy, and above all Chiropractic. If such could be done any unbiased
group of statesmen would have to recognize B. J. as the sole,
[ 31 ]

living authority, and accept what you say is Chiropractic. Wishful thinking!
Supreme Court decisions in our State has resulted in a definite
threat to any D.C. who fails to stick with our legal definition in
Washington, Adjust the vertebrae of the spine by hand. If we use
adjuncts now we are judged in courts, by the highest level of
medicine.
Very best wishes,
C. S. HAYNES, D.C.

MASS MANIPULATION
U.S. osteopathy last week underwent the most drastic spinal
manipulation in its history, designed to give it a straight-backed stance, let
it hold its head higher among the nations healing professions. In the
process, the long-revered founding father of osteopathy was gently but
firmly shouldered out of the picture.
Osteopathy got its start in 1864 when Virginia-born Dr. Andrew
Taylor Still lost three of his children in a spinal meningitis epidemic in
Kansas. Disgusted with medical methods that could not prevent such disaster, Physician Still proclaimed: I believe that the Maker of man has
deposited in the human body drugs in abundance to cure all infirmities . . .
All the remedies necessary to health are compounded within the human
body. To get the human drug factory working at peak efficiency, Still
prescribed lavish doses of spinal manipulation to preserve structural
integrity. For generations, osteopaths faithfully followed Still in emphasis on manipulation, de-emphasis on drugs.
Last week, at its annual convention in Washington, the American
Osteopathic Association (representing the nations 13,000 doctors of
osteopathy) booted Stills bones out of its constitution, went medically
more orthodox. Its constitution had formerly included this paen: The
evolution of osteopathic principles shall be an ever-growing tribute to
Andrew Taylor Still. The delegates voted (105 to 16) to drop this and to
declare simply: The objects of this association shall be to promote the
public health, to encourage scientific research and to maintain and
improve high standards of medical education in osteopathic colleges.
The six such colleges require three years of undergraduate college
work, then give a four-year course much like that of conventional
medical schools (except
[ 32 ]

for the added emphasis on manipulation) before granting the degree of D.O.
Graduates are fully licensed to practice as physicians and surgeons in
36 states; D.O.s are now eligible for appointment as military surgeons by
the armed servicesthough none has yet been given the nod by the
M.D.s in the three medical corps.
Discussions with the A.M.A., which might have led to absorption of
osteopathy by orthodox medicine, broke down in 1955. But last week the
A.O.A. hopefully kept its negotiating committee alive. A.O.A. members
were as drug-happy as any M.D.s, crowding exhibits by
pharmaceutical houses.

OSTEOPATHS GO MEDICALLY ORTHODOX

New York, (ACP)The gradual absorption of osteopathy into medicine is
reported in the July 28 issue of Time magazine. The publication said:
Last week, at its annual convention in Washington, the American
Osteopathic Association (representing the nations 13,000 doctors of
osteopathy) booted (founder Andrew Taylor) Stills bones out of its constitution, went medically more orthodox. Its constitution had formerly
included this paean: The evolution of osteopathic principles shall be an
ever-growing tribute to Andrew Taylor Still. The delegates voted (105 to
16) to drop this and to declare simply: The objects of this association shall
be to promote the public health, to encourage scientific research, and to
maintain and improve high standards of medical education in osteopathic
colleges.
Time also reported the osteopaths were as drug-happy as any M.D.s,
crowding exhibits by pharmaceutical houses.

A recent conference with a recent Commissioner, reported that out of a recent

investigation conducted by that Commission of 100 cases of Osteopaths in their use
of Osteopathy, only ONE used any osteopathic manipulations, the other 99
were ALL medical or surgical cases. This again verifies OSTEOPATHY HAS
forsaken Osteopathy and is now in love with medical and surgery.

Our reports are that The NCA NATIONAL convention at Miami was a
miserable failure as to attendance. Instead of future NATIONAL conventions it
has been suggested they discontinue such. About 200 were reported to be there. and
[ 33 ]

this, of all States, Florida which is affiliated with The NCA. It is evident they are
slipping.
It must be fearfully embarrassing to the Convention Committee, to make
overtures to some Hotel, like the Fountainbleu at Miami, telling them how many
thousands there will be in attendance, and then see it fizzle down to a mere handful.
How different is The PSC Lyceum and Homecoming, with its allied ICA
Convention. Every hotel in Moline, Rock Island, Davenport; every motel Sold
Out. Reservations are made a year, months in advance. With 5,000 in attendance,
so big there isnt a Convention Hall big enuf in these quint cities to hold them, so
The PSC had to have an $8,000 tent made big enuf, erected on its own campus to
hold assembly meetings in. The reasons are obvious!
TODAY AND THIS HOUR is a challenge for action to protect TIC AND
TOR and, what is greater, the rights of millions today who suffer, whom you ARE
capable of serving and saving; right of millions NOT YET BORN who otherwise
are stringently restricted, subjected to shorter lives by both medical men AND some
Chiropractors. THAT is OUR challenge we should meet courageously, to protect
those who have a God-given right to GET well and STAY well IF the channels of
communications are free BETWEEN that which IS free FROM ABOVE and made
free DOWNWARD FROM INSIDE-OUT, without being stifled, stultified, or kept
imprisoned by wanton men who prevent such. Let us defy the caprices, ignorances,
and medical theories of the past as they are being boldly forced into OUR
profession.
Wherever B. J. or any of The PSC Faculty appear on State Conventions, or ICA
Seminars, BIG CROWDS is the invariable rule. Returning from such conventions,
they have found that chiropractors come, of all kinds, because THEY ARE HUNGRY, SEEKING, WANTING TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND MORE
ABOUT REAL, GENUINE, TEN-FINGERED, BY HAND ONLY, PURE AND
UNADULTERATED, SPECIFIC CHIROPRACTIC. The profession is aware that
when A PSC man appears on any program, they will get PRO-CHIROPRACTIC,
NOT PRO-MEDICAL EVASIONS. They come to get their batteries
CHIROPRACTICALLY RE-CHARGED WITH THOSE PRINCIPLES AND
PRACTICES that get sick people well. It is well such is possible for TOO MANY
IN OUR PROFESSION HAVE TOO LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT
CHIROPRACTIC IS.

MEMBERSHIPS
The NCA, from time to time or place to place, claims a membership of 8,000.
We have their membership list and it is
[ 34 ]

liberally about 4,000. It has been stated that about 50 per cent of this is, or was, in
California. Within the past few months, the California Chiropractic Association
HAS SECEDED from that affiliation. This would reduce 4,000 to 2,000. It is
reported that that list contains names of men and women retired, and some dead and
buriedhow many is questionable. It has been told by California Chiropractors that
this loss has withdrawn about 28 per cent of their income. It is believed there are
about 5,000 real and false chiropractors in California, yet when the NCA held their
NATIONAL convention in Los Angeles, reports we received were that they had
about 200 at their meetings. It is well known that banquets represent all present,
including wives. If pictures are reliable, the banquet picture of the NCA MIAMI
convention exhibits about 150.
In the conduct of The ICA published membership directory, if a member dies,
retires or resigns, his name is stricken from its printed directory. The ICA does not
keep dead names, retired names or names of resigned members piled up year after
year thereby misrepresenting the numerical strength of its directory. Neither does
The ICA pad its directory with fictitious names. The policy of The ICA is to be
honest with the chiropractic profession in every respect.
The ICA prints a directory and it is NOT padded. It lists over 2,000 and has
had a substantial and healthy growth each year since its birth.
When the ICA held its mid-year Board Meeting in Los Angeles a year or two
ago, its symposium had 600 at the first, and over 700 at the second session.
The NCA had a big sign at their Miami Convention which read:

THE YEAR OF DECISION

WE say, TODAY IS THE HOUR FOR ACTION.
Let ALL OF US say:
WE HAVE MADE OUR DECISION.
to save ChiropracTIC
to protect the rights OF THE SICK TO GET WELL WITH CHIROPRACTIC
to protect THEIR rights against NCA legislative dominations and infiltrations OF
MEDICINE, under the SECRET cloaks of medicine, under the SLY guise of
being CALLED Chiropractic.

California is a sample of NCA treasonable evasions. That State Board, under

NCA domination, presented 21 pages, single spaced, nonsensical rules and
regulationsone of which was that
[ 35 ]

before a graduate Chiropractor could make application to take examination, to get a

license, TO GIVE AN ADJUSTMENT to a sick person, he had to deliver TEN
babies; later, reduced to FIVE babies; now limited to AN OBSERVATION OF
ONE baby, at an additional cost paid to some licensed medical man delivering the
baby. Physicians who permit this invasion of their private practice are few, even for
a fee. Obstetrics had to be taught in a so-called chiropractic college in California as
accredited by the NCA. The ICA secured a temporary injunction expunging all
these rules. Altho temporary, it has lasted 21 months.
Two members of that California Board, accredited by the NCA, were
PROCTOLOGISTS. It became necessary to peek in the LOWER orifices before
you could get a license to give an adjustment next to the head. Fortunately again, the
ICA secured a ruling from the California Attorney-General that proctology is
NOT the practice of Chiropractic under the California Chiropractic Practice Act.
Dr. Una Brown Carey of California offers a unique suggestion for unity.
Instead of calling EVERYTHING MEDICAL Chiropractic, she suggests if the
D.C. WANTS TO DO other things, simply add the conjunctive AND. Examples:
Chiropractic AND colonic irrigation
Chiropractic AND radionics
Chiropractic AND proctology or, like ham AND eggsham from pigs and
eggs from chickens, until you have everything listed that you AND have.

The California Board of Chiropractic (?) Examiners met on August 16-17,

1958. On the 16th, the three California Chiropractic schools were called before the
Board. Dr. Montenegro, Secretary of the Board, stated, It will be necessary for the
California schools to bring about a program wherein MINOR SURGERY AND
MEDICINE will be taught to students. Sunday, August 17th, the Board sent letters
to all California organizations to have an officer appear before the Board. Dr.
Montenegro outlined that the Board proposes to have each organization TRY TO
SET A FEE SCHEDULE. He further stated the Board will present Chiropractic
rules to offset the judges ruling of his former ruling in the suit brot by the
Hollywood School.
A handful of chiropractors in California TRIED to form a PROFESSIONAL
UNION, to become affiliated with the CIO-AFL LABOR union. This is not a new
subterfuge to unite THEIR forces, or to subjugate the non-union scabs. When Mr.
Greene was President of CIO-AFL some Eastern groups formed a union, asked to
be accepted and Mr. Greene refused
[ 36 ]

them. This California group was denied unionization with the CIO-AFL also.
The primary purpose of a Union is to fix the arbitrary wage scales of its
members, to which ALL employee members must submit and adhere. It is a closed
shop movement.
PROFESSIONAL groups should not and cannot be obligated to formulate A
UNION SCALE of salaries for PROFESSIONAL services rendered, neither should
a PROFESSIONAL group be tied down by such restrictions because they are
employers.

CHIROPRACTIC vs. CHIROPRAXIS

As if a large number of States allow Chiropractors to practice OB ?
The time has come, the Walrus said, to speak of many things, et cetera.
Is a Chiropractor going to practice a separate and distinct science,
ChiropracTIC, or is he going to practice Chiropraxis. Chiropraxis may be
described as a fourth rate medical procedure. The measure of a Chiro[ 37 ]

praxor will be the size syringe he carries and all the little arts and services
he may offer the public. And the odor which goes with such establishments
would smell like one imagines a medical mans place of business would
smell. One would cast a play the same way, his characters would fit his
preconceived notions; and so it will remain in the minds of some of our
phrustrated physicians ad nauseum.
When are these agitators going to want to pull teeth? Chiropody is a
pretty good field too. Lets seeobstetrics used to belong to women who
were called mid-wives; Psychiatry used to belong to guidance minded
people who pioneered the work and were muscled out; Surgery used to
belong to barbers who were muscled out and now a few of the ambitious
minded chiros want to muscle out the past masters of all muscle outers.
Open statement to the profession: We have a wonderful science which
needs so much research and documentation, lets screen out the agitators
who are so few in number its pitiful and do something constructive for a
change.
(California Newsletter December 15, 1957.)

The NCA Journal (August 58) IS a dynamic bag of dynamite tricks; a positivenegative series of programs. They are helplessly and hopelessly wallowing with illmixed, flighty and vague programs from THEIR perverted point of view. They have
built an explosive conglomeration which IS destructive to Chiropractic.
By contrast, the ICA has a sane, sound, sensible TIC FOR TOR program. We
present it in a sincere and honest manner, without evasions. Our approach is
dignified. We present a definite out-lined series of programs for people who believe
in CHIROPRACTIC. RIGHT MUST BE AS MILITANT AS WRONG.
We frequently have said that one man behind the saloon bar, selling whiskey,
can addle more minds, pervert more honest people to go crooked and commit more
crimes, than one thousand inactive passive followers who do nothing to stop such.

State by state, the NCA is locking doors, throwing away keys to FREEDOM in
our profession which our stalwart pioneers once fought and suffered to secure. State
by state, by contrast, the old UCA, CHB, and now the ICA is doing its duty to keep
EVERY state open, that you may come, go, and do what YOU think best,
WITHOUT legislative rules and regulations telling you what you CAN OR
CANNOT DO; what you
[ 38 ]

MUST do to get your license renewed under CONTROLLED thinking. The U.S.,
under NCA dictates, would be another Russia with planned legislatively organized
labor slave camps.
This IS a CALL TO ARMS to protect, preserve, and defend ChiropracTIC in
its purity for posterity. It is SAVE IT TODAY, OR TOMORROW YOULL
HAVE NOTHING TO SAVE.

DR. PLOUDRE PLEADS

(Dr. Ploudre is to be congratulated for having the courage to make those
CONSTRUCTIVE statements in that kind of a Journal. We only wish all NCA
articles were of like calibre.)
Dr. Ploudre, in his NCA Presidents address, (August 58 NCA Journal) says:
He called attention TO THE ENCROACHMENT of physical
medicine upon the Chiropractic profession and URGED the continued
determination TO FIGHT THE PREVENTION OF THIS
ENCROACHMENT on a unified NATIONAL scale.
Those are wise words! Would that they WERE a reality in NCA performance.
THE HOUR OF DECISION has arrived FOR THE NCA to clean their
house against THE ENCROACHMENT of physical medicine upon the
Chiropractic professionAND TO FIGHT FOR PREVENTION OF THIS
ENCROACHMENT ON A UNIFIED NATIONAL SCALE.
A recent survey of several pro-medical, anti-chiropractic associations and state
publications including endless spaces in the NCA Journal, the most flagrant
offender, shows 124 MEDICINES and medical treatments of endless and
questionable values, are consistently advertised, advocated, encouraged, and
exhibited at NCA and in certain State Publications, as well as some so-called NCA
accredited chiropractic colleges. (See pages 141-142, PALMERS LAW OF
LIFE for this list of foreign items.)
ANY chiropractor who opens an office and consistently, day after day, on
case after case, PRESCRIBES vitamins, for fees, directly or indirectly received, for
the alleviation or cure of diseases, unless given the right to do BY SEPARATE
PRACTICE ACTS, is in violation of medical practice acts. Also, one who for
SAME reasons advises use of rectal dilators food supplements for therapeutic
purposes, and a host of other medical adjuncts, preparations, and devices, as
advertised month after month in the NCA Journal, ALSO is engaged in encouraging
practice of medicines.
A thief IS a thief regardless of whether he surrounds himself with the false
mask of legislative immunity respectability
[ 39 ]

and jumps MEDICAL fences into MEDICAL orchards and steals MEDICAL sour
crab apples; or whether MEDICAL men plunder Chiropractic principles and
practices under assumed false names for competitive professional respectability,
jumps over THE CHIROPRACTIC fence, is just as guilty when he steals
CHIROPRACTIC sweet apples.
There is NO difference between MEDICAL men who steal Chiropractic body
and soul because they see the coming handwriting on the wall, realizing
Chiropractic DOES what medicine CANT do; or for the NCA to encourage its
members to steal all branches of the healing arts are within the scope of chiropractic practice, because they havent LEARNED that Chiropractic is an ALLINCLUSIVE and ALL-EXCLUSIVE PRINCIPLE AND PRACTICE. Ignorance of
WHAT Chiropractic is, under questionable banners, is no excuse to violate the
Innate natural, normal, laws of life and health.
Dr. Ploudre tells MEDICAL MEN to let Chiropractic alone, stay in THEIR
own back yard, quit stealing prior arts rights which belong TO US, which does not
belong TO THEM either in principle or practice. THAT is sound advice.
As President of ICA, I advise Chiropractors to let MEDICAL DRUGS and
treatments alone, stay in OUR back yard, quit stealing prior arts rights of medicine
which DOES NOT belong to us either in principle or practice. Dr. Ploudre ALSO
should agree THIS is sound advice.
He urges
the continued determination TO FIGHT THE PREVENTION of this
encroachment on a unified NATIONAL SCALE.
We ALSO URGE
the continued determination TO FIGHT THE PREVENTION.
of CHIROPRACTORS STEALING medicine.
If ONE is right, so is THE OTHER. If MEDICAL MEN SHOULD leave
CHIROPRACTIC ALONE, Chiropractors SHOULD LEAVE MEDICINE
ALONE. Sauce for the goose is good applesauce for the ganderor is it?

MORE EVIDENCE
Are MEDICINES CHIROPRACTIC? Here is ONE example: Page 47 of the
August, 1958, NCA Journal is a full-page ad of VITAMINERALS, INC., which
mentions BALDRIAN AND VALERIAN.
DOCTORS MANUAL SERVICE COMPANY are selling Chiropractors a
product known as PASIQUIL, with similar drugs.
BALDRIAN AND VALERIAN ARE LISTED AS DRUGS
[ 40 ]

in Potters Cyclopedia of Botanical Drugs and Davies Cyclopedia of MEDICAL

and SURGICAL SPECIALTIES.
It is BAD-practice and MAL-practice for the NCA to advertise, encourage, and
advocate the use of DRUGS. It is even worse for Chiropractors to buy them, use
them, calling them CHIROPRACTIC, as advertised and advocated by the NCA.
The National Food and Drug Act, passed by Congress, June 30, 1906, says:
The term drug as used in this Act shall INCLUDE all medicines
AND preparations recognized in the UNITED STATES pharmacopoeia or
National Formalary for INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL use * * *
This Federal statute makes the U.S. Pharmacopoeia the OFFICIAL guide FOR
DRUGS and valeria IS listed as such on page 484 of the ninth decential revision
of this publication. Baldrian is the German name for Valerian.
Preparations similar to tranquilizers, or the same as such, are being advertised
in certain so-called chiropractic publications. Such are listed as drugs in the ninth
decenial edition of the United States Pharmacopeia. These preparations may not be
dispensed or prescribed legally under the chiropractic laws of several states. Why
not ? The chiropractic adjustment OPENS a vertebral occlusion; this releases
PRESSURES upon spinal cord or spinal nerves, this RESTORES ABNORMAL
REDUCED FLOW to a normal quantity flow. Tranquilizers REDUCE quantity
flow, paralyze function. One RESTORES, the other REDUCES. The two are
opposites and oppose each other. One INCREASES HEALTH, life; the other
INCREASES DISEASE, DEATH. WHY buy, sell, prescribe or use them then?

For years the NCA and Vitamin Co. have been advertising such products. They
AND the NCA have stepped beyond decency in their tranquilizer products on
which there CAN BE NO QUESTION or argument as to NCA invasion into the
field OF DRUGS. This not only violates the NCA definition of Chiropractic, but
also the Florida Chiropractic Practice Statute which states:
but chiropractors are expressly prohibited from prescribing or
administering TO ANY PERSON ANY medicine OR drug included in
Materia Medical

A MERE HANDFUL OF NCA MEN ARE GREASING SKIDS

SLIDING OUR PROFESSION DOWN THE ROAD INTO MEDICAL
LEGISLATIVE OBLIVION. THESE FEW MEN ARE UNWITTINGLY
SUPPORTED BY MANY GOOD CHIROPRACTORS WHO LITTLE
REALIZE THE DESTRUCTION
[ 41 ]

THEY FOSTER AND ENCOURAGE WITH THEIR SUPPORT,

EVENTUALLY TO KILL THEM OFF ALSO.
As an example, we quote from ONE manual of ONE so-called College of
Chiropractic.
Chiropractic IS that branch of the healing arts which deals with the
REMOVAL of interference with the transmission of life force by a process
of relating disrelated structures by hand with the dynamic adjustive thrust,
and includes THE RIGHT AND DUTY of using proper sanitary, hygienic
AND PALLIATIVE MEASURES INCIDENT THERETO, but does not
include CUTTING surgery or the use of drugs.
This definition is PART right, PART wrong; PARTLY exclusive, PARTLY
inclusive; PARTLY Chiropractic in subterfuge terms; PARTLY medical in intent.
A slippery evasive definition to please those WHO WANT TO BE what they
DESIRE TO BE, as well as those WHO WANT TO BE what they are not so they
can straddle the medical fence on one side and Chiropractic fence on the other.
Here is another example where straddling the fence attempts to be popular with
unpopular people on both sides, in their vain attempt to be both fish and fowl, which
can neither swim nor fly. The same booklet says:
THERAPEUTIC equipment FOR CHIROPRACTIC, Hydrotherapy,
Heliotherapy, Electrotherapy Light Therapy, Orthopedic SURGERY,
PHYSICAL THERAPY, AND ALL OTHER ACCEPTED methods of
natural treatment.
This booklet further says:
The Chiropractic profession of (mentioning State) LEGALLY owns
the charter, the building and all the equipment.
They also say:
Graduates of our College OF CHIROPRACTIC ARE qualified to
apply for examination by the (State) Board of CHIROPRACTIC
Examiners, and by OTHER STATE BOARDS IN THE United States
AND CANADA.

Dr. Rogers (NCA), in his

FIRST NATIONAL SEMINAR ON CHIROPRACTIC PUBLIC
RELATIONS
(which WAS NOT the firstthe ICA originated that program), in the NCA
Journal, August 58, says:
* * * that ALL STATES should have educational LICENSE
RENEWAL LEGISLATION.
There might be good come from this SLAVERY EN[ 42 ]

FORCED attendance IF programs were PRO-CHIROPRACTIC, but in majority

they are not. All NCA programs ARE PREPONDERANTLY PRO-MEDICAL and
ANTI-CHIROPRACTIC.
Enforced membership means more income to State Associations. Such gives
MORE numerical and financial strength with which to DESTROY
CHIROPRACTIC, per se. This communistic slavery means legalized raping of
Chiropractic, driving it to its doom into medicine.
The theory these two-day ENFORCED attendance conventions, asked for
before legislatures, is
Chiropractors should keep up with the progress and development OF
THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION. It being a new and young
profession, is growing and expanding. Members in THIS way should be
COMPELLED to attend within the borders of their State to keep up with
the progress of their profession.
Wisconsin and Michigan, as examples, secured such legislative amendments
under this deceptive guise. Programs, speakers, exhibits, subjects discussed were
ANTI-CHIROPRACTIC and PRO-MEDICAL. There was a group OF
CHIROPRACTORS who could not stomach this hogwash CALLED Chiropractic,
which factually was medical propaganda. Amongst the rest in Wisconsin, was Fred
Lundy, a member of the State Board. This group REFUSED to be clubbed to attend,
pay dues, to listen to a lot of MEDICAL rubbish, bunk, trash. These loyal and true
Chiropractors in those two states took their issues to court and proved the basis
upon which legislative amendments were ASKED FOR AND OBTAINED was
false, misleading, misrepresentation. Today, any Chiropractor there can go WHERE
HE PLEASES, ATTEND CONVENTIONS HE PREFERS, listen to pure and
unadulterated CHIROPRACTIC subjects, by paying state dues and still GET HIS
LICENSE RENEWED. NCA gag rule doesnt work, wont work, cant work where
there is a decided reaction against such.
As a part of the NCA program, Dr. Rogers reports:
* * * each state make plans THROUGH THEIR LEGISLATIVE
COMMITTEES to implement THEIR PRACTICE ACTS by having
ENACTED LAW the RATIONAL DEFINITION AND SCOPE of
accepted practice AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE DATE, as drawn up by
the NCA general counsel and approved by the House of Delegates.
He also says this RATIONAL DEFINITION
would make UNIFORM THE PRACTICE PRIVILEGES of all
doctors OF CHIROPRACTIC and thus
[ 43 ]

instill GREATER CONFIDENCE OF THE PUBLIC in this growing and

dynamic profession.

Here is that NCA RATIONAL definition:

Scope of ACCEPTED PRACTICE. The practice OF
CHIROPRACTIC consists of the diagnosing of human ailments BY THE
USE OF ALL DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES recognized BY THE
VARIOUS SCHOOLS OF THE HEALING ARTS; the elimination of the
abnormal functioning of the human nervous system by the adjustment of the
articulations AND ADJACENT TISSUES of the human body, particularly
of the spinal column; and INCLUDES the use, AS INDICATED, OF
PROCEDURES WHICH MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT MORE
EFFECTIVE, INCLUDING CLINICAL NUTRITION, psychotherapy,
AND PHYSIOTHERAPY, but excluding the use of drugs and surgery.
Break this language into what IT means and what the NCA wants it to mean
and this is what it proves:
1. How can there be ANY UNIFORM PRACTICE with ALL things the
NCA advertises in their Journal; or by what they advocate, encourage, and suggest
the Chiropractor use in ALL diagnostic procedures recognized by the
VARIOUS schools of the healing arts, including medical, osteopathic, etc.?
2. Adjacent tissues includes ALL THE HUMAN BODY because ALL
tissues ARE adjacent to the spinal column.
3. As indicated means anything and everything in medicine CAN BE slyly
indicated to make the adjustments more effective. Physiotherapy includes the
entire field OF EVERY AND ALL medical treatments of any and all kinds in
principle and practice.
With all the conglomeration advocated, advertised, programmed by the NCA,
how can each Chiropractor, making his choice amongst endless complex variables,
no two alike, there being NO constant, each differing from all the rest, each grasping blindly at what he HOPES comes within that scope of practicewhere does
this mass and mess make UNIFORM the practiceOF ALL doctors of
Chiropractic? What IS uniform about it?
Is there uniformity TODAY in the rank and file of NCA membership to
begin with? Go into ANY state; judge for yourself whether any TWO Chiropractors
have a UNIFORM * * * PRACTICE. To permit fabulous repressed complex
additions with unbridled practice privileges granted by
[ 44 ]

legislative amendment, means medicines will flood in as chiropractic is expelled

out.

B. J. PALMER DEFENDS D. D. PALMER

One entire page of the August, 1958, NCA Journal is devoted to
CHIROPRACTIC DAY. We find these statements:

WHEREAS, our practitioners HUMBLY follow the trail of physiological

anatomical TRUTHS laid down by D. D. Palmer, and
WHEREAS, the Chiropractic profession of America IS THE PROUD
AND ZEALOUS GUARDIAN of the ethical standards and unselfish
DEDICATION to public service FOSTERED BY DR. DANIEL DAVID
PALMER, etc.

D. D. Palmer, IN HIS BOOK, ALL HIS LIFE, despised, belittled, ridiculed,

and chastised anything and every person who called himself a Chiropractor, who did
ALL the pro-medical and anti-chiropractic issues the NCA HAS DONE and IS
DOING to BELITTLE and hold up to public scorn EVERYTHING D. D. Palmer
advocated, taught, and wrote about.
READ ANY PAGE IN HIS BOOK, WHAT HE SAID AND WHAT THE
NCA DOES, and you find a consistent inconsistent contradiction to how
HUMBLE the NCA is NOT; Where they consistently are belittling hideously
conflicting hypocrisy with their MISrepresentations of what HE stood for.
These two paragraphs, from that page, are a brazen travesty and unpardonable
mockery to the memory of D. D. Palmer. If he were here he would boldly,
vehemently, and viciously DENY everything FOREIGN to Chiropractic which the
NCA advocates, supports, endorses, and urges ChiropracTORS to use, calling it all
Chiropractic IN HIS NAME.
D. D. Palmer fought, as WE have fought and are fighting, to keep
ChiropracTIC a separate and distinct philosophy, science, and art, which it HAS
EVERY MERITORIOUS RIGHT to be. It has ONE common Innate source, ONE
functional expression; from interference to adjustment correction.
It is proper and befitting that D. D. Palmer, and his good name as the
Discoverer OF CHIROPRACTIC, should be honored on CHIROPRACTIC DAY.
It is also proper and befitting HE should be honored THE OTHER 364 DAYS OF
EVERY YEAR. ALL CHIROPRACTORS should honor HIM AND HIS
DISCOVERY of THE PRINCIPLE which gave THEM a profession, a profitable
living, homes, cars, offices and fortunes. Fortunately, HE IS honored by
CHIROPRACTORS worthy of
[ 45 ]

the name, who follow IN HIS foot-steps. By the same token it is transparent and
sheerest hypocrisy to denounce and despise HIM AND HIS DISCOVERY to read
such articles as one on PHYSIOTHERAPY SECTION on pages 28, 56, 57 of
August issue of The NCA Journal. By the same token it is DEGRADING to see
The NCA, mercilessly his worst and severest enemies belittling the
CHIROPRACTIC D. D. PALMER stood for; intentionally, deliberately, with
malice aforethought, sweeping his principles and practices being bastardized and
being absorbed by medicine.
There are many sincere, honest Chiropractors in the NCA who despise medical
gim-cracks, gee-haws, trinkets and folderols supported by the NCA. We suggest
these Chiropractors WITHDRAW numerical and financial support FROM THE
NCA UNTIL such time as they clean house and become what they surreptitiously
claim to be, viz., A CHIROPRACTIC organization. Many NCA supporters are
sincere, honest ChiropracTORS who are PROUD that ChiropracTIC can exist
alone, independent of medical adjuncts; that it HAS AND CAN thrive pure and
unadulterated. We suggest ALL SUCH join the ICA because it IS the ONE
association that consistently travels the road D. D. Palmer would be proud to be
associated with if he were here today.
The NCA is fully cognizant of what they do. They KNOW they are destroying
everything Chiropractic except its name. They laud D. D. Palmer on
CHIROPRACTIC DAY and destroy everything HE believed, practiced, and fought
for, the other 364 days in the year, year after year.
The ICA, by contrast, is an organization composed OF CHIROPRACTORS,
whose programs, speakers, legislative and legal intentions are to preserve, protect,
defend and make possible EVERYTHING PRO-CHIROPRACTIC AND
NOTHING PRO-MEDICAL.

FACTS, EVIDENCE, AND PROOF

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT D. D. PALMER
AND
WE QUOTE WHAT D. D. PALMER DOES SAY
At the expense of being verbose, lets review some mad ravings of The NCA
and others who would damn D. D. Palmer with faint praisefor an ulterior
purpose.
We have quoted a preponderance of evidence of medical men absorbing
Chiropractic. We also have quoted a surplus of proof of NCA men lauding D. D.
Palmer, and purporting to say WHAT HE SAID.
To make it clear, we NOW quote what D. D. Palmer actually
[ 46 ]

HAS SAID IN HIS BOOK. This should put the NCA to shame for playing UP this
one man in publicity and then RUNNING HIM DOWN professionally.
NCA Journal, August 58, said:
WHEREAS, our practitioners HUMBLY FOLLOW the trail of
physiological and anatomical TRUTHS laid down by D. D. Palmer,
WHEREAS, the Chiropractic profession OF AMERICA IS THE
PROUD AND ZEALOUS GUARDIAN OF THE ETHICAL
STANDARDS AND UNSELFISH DEDICATION to public service
FOSTERED BY DR. DANIEL DAVID PALMER, and * * *
In other parts of this book, we quote ENDLESS PROOF AND EVIDENCE of
what THE NCA IS DOING TO DESTROY EVERYTHING D. D. PALMER
advocated, believed, and said.
In September 58 issue of NCA Journal is an article by W. D. Harper. He
TRIES to justify D. D. Palmers CHIROPRACTIC, quoting MEDICAL men.
To quote all Dr. Harpers quotes of D. D. Palmer, where it scrambles them with
medical basic science jargon, would be a waste of space here.
There are two quotes, however, worth correcting:
11. That the doctor of the future can adjust man to his environment
only if he is willing TO DO ANYTHING THAT IS NECESSARY to
relieve THE ENVIRONMENTAL irritation of the nervous system that is
preventing him from adapting. This is why D. D. Palmer said:
I have NEVER CONSIDERED IT BENEATH MY
DIGNITY TO DO ANYTHING TO RELIEVE HUMAN
SUFFERING.
We quote from D. D. Palmers book. We repeat EXACTLY WHAT D. D.
PALMER DID SAY in regard to THAT statement, taken ENTIRELY out of
PRE-TEXT, TEXT, AND CONTEXT, confined EXCLUSIVELY in relation TO
CORNS AND BUNIONS. He did not say, nor did D. D. Palmer imply, suggest,
infer, or mean THAT statement to mean WHAT THE NCA AND DR. HARPER
WISHED HIM TO SAY, that he would run the gauntlet TO DO ANYTHING
with medicines, drugs, treatments, of anything other THAN THAT CONTAINED
WITHIN THE CHIROPRACTIC principle.
Dr. Harper further said:
Dr. D. D. Palmers PRINCIPLES ARE AS YOUNG and vigorous
TODAY as they WERE ON THE DAY HE WROTE THEM.
We agree with THAT statement. But we DISAGREE WITH WHAT THE
NCA is trying to squeeze into Dr. D. D. PAL[ 47 ]

MERS PRINCIPLES as being within ten thousand miles OF BEING

Chiropractic.
As proof, we quote frequently from D. D. Palmers book:
Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic, Published in 1910.
These quotes should be read CAREFULLY to see WHAT D. D. Palmer thot in
relation to what we quote in the fore part of the article mentioned.
The above quote is CHIROPRACTICALLY TRUE, BUT NOT THE KIND
OF CHIROPRACTIC THE NCA IS TRYING TO SHOVE DOWN THE throats
of our people.
Quoting from D. D.s book:
Bunions and Corns
The amount of agony and torment suffered on account of corns,
bunions and ingrowing toe-nails is beyond estimation, as the parties who
suffer from their presence are not sick and often suffer without complaining.
Our business, as Chiropractors, should be to relieve human suffering, no
matter whether it comes from a corn or cancer. It is a general opinion
among the laity that Chiropractors know nothing about corns, bunions or
ingrowing toe-nails, in that they are right.
I have never felt it beneath my dignity to do anything to relieve human
suffering. THE RELIEF GIVEN BUNIONS AND CORNS BY
ADJUSTING IS PROOF POSITIVE THAT SUBLUXATED JOINTS
DO CAUSE DISEASE.
These toe ailments often inflict enough torment to offset all the
comforts of life, upset ones disposition, making a chronic grumbler of its
possessor.
Page 322.

At Port Perry, Ontario, where D. D. Palmer was born, on the base of the
monument erected by the NCA, they have inscribed this ONE SENTENCE
ISOLATED QUOTE. The perfidious intent in quoting ONE sentence OUT OF its
relation to bunions and corns is to lead our profession to hope that D. D. Palmer
would do ANYTHING the NCA DOES DO. This is the most dastardly crime the
NCA could commit AGAINST what D. D. Palmer stood for.
This one sentence WAS IN RELATION to corns and bunions and DID NOT
include physiotherapy, naturopathy, drug therapy, or any other of many things the
NCA advocates. All of our quotes from D. D.s book speak AS PLAIN AS
WORDS CAN WHAT HE STOOD FOR and what he denied WAS
CHIROPRACTIC.
We hope from here on in the NCA and its adherents will
[ 48 ]

SPEAK TRUTH and protect D. D. Palmers opinions, and QUIT MISrepresenting

him.
Can anybody read into that pretext, text, or context anything more than The
relief given corns and bunions by adjusting? Connect THIS statement, as
including everything, which the NCA DOES, with all D. D. Palmers statements
herein quoted which CONTRADICT the slipping and spilling over into everything
else which the NCA DOES.
MORE ABOUT LAUDING D. D. PALMER
AND KICKING HIM DOWN INTO THE CELLAR
A. Homewood, D.C., Dean of the Toronto College, speaking before the Lincoln
College Graduation, January 18, 1958, said:
There need be no hesitation to look at facts for fear faith in our
professional teachings might be shaken, because ours is not a belief, a
faith, a cult, but a science founded upon the basic, fundamental
principles as ancient as the vertebrate. D. D. PALMER POINTS OUT
THAT TRUTH FORCEFULLY IN HIS WRITINGS. He taught that the
irritations of environment, mechanical, chemical and mental, overcome the
resistance of structure to produce distortion, subluxations,
INTERFERENCE TO NORMAL TRANSMISSIONS OF NERVE
ENERGY * * * .
Thus, TODAY SCIENCE IS LEARNING THAT D. D. PALMERS
TEACHINGS ARE CORRECTTHAT DISEASE IS NOT AN
ENTITYAN INVASIONa thing TO BE DRIVEN OUT, overcome,
or destroyed * * * .
Under Canada, in the September CCA Journal, we find this:
The Annual Convention of the Ontario Chiropractic Association
and this statement:
The latest reports ON MEDICINES ATTEMPT TO
INCORPORATE CHIROPRACTIC PROCEDURES IN THE PRACTICE
OF MEDICINE will be discussed and the need FOR OUR PROFESSION
to issue a statement of policy TO THE PRESS will be emphasized.
Why absolute silence on CHIROPRACTORS OF THE NCA ATTEMPTING
TO INCORPORATE MEDICAL PROCEDURES IN THE PRACTICE OF
CHIROPRACTIC? THAT should be discussed fully, thoroly, without reservations
or evasions ALSO.
Proof we offer PROVES it makes little difference WHO
[ 49 ]

THE THIEVES ARE, whether the kettle calls the pot black, or vice versa!
Note that there is a great hullabaloo about what MEDICAL MEN ARE
DOING STEALING CHIROPRACTIC; but you see and hear only whispers about
HOW CHIROPRACTORS ARE STEALING MEDICINE aided and abetted by the
NCA and NCA Journals.
Peculiaror, is ithow the medical profession IS GOING FORWARD INTO
STEALING CHIROPRACTIC, whereas THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION IS
GOING BACKWARD WHOLESALE INTO STEALING MEDICINE, under
NCA guidance, encouragement, help, legislatively and professionally. About the
only source of condemnation ON STEALING of both PROFESSIONS INTO THE
OTHER PROFESSION comes FROM ME. Who has a better right to accuse and
challenge thieves BOTH WAYS, than I?
The perfidy of parading D. D. Palmer as the paragon of greatness ONE DAY
of the year, and then kicking him and the principles he stood for down into the cellar
and hiding him in deceitful obscurity the other 364 days of the year. This is rank
heresy, perfidy, which any sane person would and should challenge. Either he WAS
such 365 days of the year, or he wasnt such ONE day of the year. Now that D. D.
Palmer is no longer here, the NCA seems privileged to play fast and loose with his
good discovery.
Quoting from D. D.s book:
Willard Carver says:
Consumption, or tuberculosis of the lungs, as the process exists
today, is caused specifically by occlusion of the first, second, third and
fourth dorsal, and sometimes the eighth, seventh and sixth nerves.
D. D. Palmer replies:
Giving seven pairs of nerves (14 nerve trunks) the occlusion of which
causes consumption is not precise, definite nor specific.
Dr. Carver states on page 4 of his Chiropractic analysis, that he
received the very crude application of its principles from the founder.
Those very crude adjustments relieved him of consumption and are
yet used by the founder in that very crude application of adjusting one
vertebra for the white plague.
I used a specific adjustment in adjusting Willard Carver. Altho it was
very crude he was relieved by
[ 50 ]

adjusting one vertebrathe one displaced and none other.

My adjusting of one vertebra for the relief of consumption in the
case of Willard Carver he thinks very crude, but the adjusting of three
pairs of cervical and four pairs of dorsal nerves is considered by him to be
precise, definite and specific. This is the specific, scientific analysis of
Chiropractic by Carver.
In order to give specific adjustments, we must possess a knowledge
of the disease in question and be able to trace it to its origin; not to seven
pairs of nerves, nor to one pair, but to the one single nerve trunk
impinged upon, and sometimes even to that of one filament of a nerve.
Page 45
A knowledge of diseases is not necessary; it is not essential to
know the ailments for which adjustments are given. Months of study on
physiology, pathology, neurology, osteology, myology, and all the other
ologies are unnecessary. This mode of procedure is what might be
appropriately called general Chiropractic adjusting; analogous to the
osteopaths general treatment which consists of manipulations and
Swedish movements covering the entire body. As the osteopath learns that
special moves give specific results, so the Chiropractor will in time learn
to be specific in his work, making Chiropractic a science.
The hit the high places method would be all right if all vertebral
columns were alike, in health, in the outline of the distal ends of the spinous
processes. But on the contrary, we find no two of them alike; so, that, to
depend upon the configuration of the spinous processes, alone, is often
misleading. It is well to know the locality of the special ailment we are
expected to relieve. Knowing the locality, we should be specific in
determining, by palpation, the nerve impinged upon, the vertebra displaced,
and the direction it should be moved in order to rack it into its normal
position, and then act accordingly.
Pages 50-51
The entire column has 31 pairs of nerves, 62 spinal nerve trunks;
these, he says, are all occluded, closed or shut up. To adjust every
vertebra for a definite form of disease betrays a lack of Chiropractic
knowledge. Such adjustments are neither specific nor scientific. If the
clinic is for the purpose of practice, why not adopt Dr. Arnolds method of
loosening up
[ 51 ]

every vertebra, from the coccyx to the occiput, and then replacing each and
every one separately ? That would be Chiro-prac-tice.
This book has been written for the purpose of teaching Chiropractic as
a science, making the art of adjusting specific, giving a special location
and adjustment for each disease so far as we know.
Any person can learn to hit the high places, replace and displace
vertebrae, relieve one disease and cause others. Let us, as Chiropractors,
show the world that Chiropractic is a science; that hemiplegia is caused
by a displaced vertebra, the sixth dorsal; that relief is given by replacing
that vertebra and none other. Why not be specific in typhoid fever. Why
not learn which vertebra is drawn out of alignment, the one which causes
the symptoms collectively known as typhoid? No matter if the evidence of
certain disease is manifested in various parts of the bodyremember that
there are two ganglionic chains of the sympathetic nervous system reaching
from the occiput to the coccyx; its plexus of nerves extending into the
cranium, and that these vertebral cords are distributing agencies. Why not
combine the science of Chiropractic with the art of adjusting?
I am pleased to state that many Chiropractors have outgrown, and
have no further use for medicine, magnetic treatment, vibrators or
osteopathy. They practice Chiropractic unmixed. Now, why not take
another step forward by giving only specific adjustments?
Pages 51-52
Many have written me, others have personally insisted, that their
scientific system is a necessary companion to adjusting, and ought to be
taken in as a part of Chiropractic. Now, Friend Carver, you need not spend
any time trying to get up any matrimonial alliance either for Chiropractic or
Adjusting. They are only 15 years of age, and, while I am their guardian,
they shall not take any foreigner as a partner, for they are wholly
different in their natures. Such a co-partnership would be incongruous,
inharmonious, incompatible; would result in retrogression instead of
advancement. I have no idea of allowing Chiropractic or Adjusting to give
up their individuality. Chiropractic has no room or use for Miss
Treatment, neither had Adjustment any need of being hampered by Miss
Remedy. These girls of fashion change their clothing to
[ 52 ]

suit every suitor; they would only annoy my kids. Chiropractic and
Adjustment are inseparable; they desire no other company.
Yes, sir; The discoverer and developer of Chiropractic has
demonstrated that he has freedom and intelligence enough to find his way
out of therapeutics and has no longing for any of its remedies. My time
is being used in discovering the cause of disease and developing a method
for relief. Causes of disease and then adjusting therefor has been
neglected far too long in the vain hope of discovering an antidote, a remedy, for the disorders of mankind. Please excuse me, I am in a hurry; I do
not want to be delayed by any method that treats disease either
mentally or physically. I am searching for causes and their adjustment. I
have no time to waste on parasites.
You seem to think that Chiropractic and Suggestion are inseparable
twins. Such a coalition would be incongruous. It would be the uniting of
two opposites; two adverse methods which are antagonistic; two
contradictories; two propositions which are diametrically opposed to each
other in thot and action. They would be antithetical in contrast. Suggestion
would be the counter-irritant to adjusting. Either would be repugnant to
the other. The uniting of two opposites could not help but be discordant.
Their characters are heterogeneous. Suggestion was born of superstition
in the antique past. She is antiquated, uncouth, would be an unsuitable
partner for the American juvenile, who was born in a modern, philosophical
age.
Pages 81-82
Where would this science be today, how much would have been
developed, of how many diseased conditions would I have located the
cause, if, when I did not succeed in removing the cause by the first effort, I
had resorted to some one of the many therapeutical remedies which do
no harm, to treat the effects known as disease? I would have made but
one step forward and that would have been retraced backward to some one
of the many systems which treat disease instead of adjusting causes. The
world has struggled in darkness, pain and misery for ages, because every
method treated the effects instead of adjusting the cause thereof. Yes, I
have taken a step in advance. Why not get in step with the developer and
continue to go forward. Why detract my attention from my
[ 53 ]

scientific investigation by introducing antiquated remedies? By my

unceasing effortsdiscovering and developingthis science does not
stand in need of any aid from those methods which treat disease. When
you use other methods as an aid to Chiropractic, whether an assistant or
not, you raise your voice to detract from the glory of Chiro. Were you
familiar with the principles of Chiropractic, you would not write of
reducing and destroying disease; for such an idea is Allopathic.
Chiropractors do not reduce or destroy; instead, they repair, make right that
which is the cause of wrongdoing. It shocks your natural prejudice to
allow me the full honor of discovering and developing the grandest science
on earth.
Page 84
I think that there is some good in all methods; but when the
Chiropractor adjusts the bony framework to its normal position; all pliable
tissue will respond and resume their proper position and consequently their
usual functionshealth being the result. What more needs to be done?Page 97
Drugs affect nerves; for that purpose are they given. Astringents cause
contraction of tissue. Tonics and stimulants excite action. Sedatives and
narcotics lower functional activity by producing stupor. Diuretics,
diaphoretics and expectorants stimulate certain nerves to over-action. A
continued use of any one of these causes conditions, which we name habits,
to become fixed. I was the first to determine the where and how of
medicationpoison.
Chiropractors are able, or at least should be, to locate the vertebra
displaced, the nerves impinged upon, and to replace the vertebra and
release the impingement.
Page 99
It is true that D. D. Palmer always detested policy. While others said
Honesty is the best policy, he thought that honesty did not need policy,
that in proportion as we use policy, we covered up honesty with deceit;
therefore, his stick-to-it-iveness to principle and honor made him some
enemies, who could but respect and reverence him for being truthful and
upright. While D. D. Palmer has been the means of restoring health to
thousands; placing hundreds on the road to wealth, a very few for
avaricious greed and mercenary gain, have childlike, tried to undermine
his honor.
[ 54 ]

These would-be fountain heads and developers are cowards and

kleptomaniacs, failing at every turn of the road.
Page 112
There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting
causes. I was the first to adjust the cause of disease.
Page 125
Medical and osteopathic laws are expensive to place on the
statute books and very expensive to keep there. It is said, the average
expense for each state for the osteopaths to keep a mount, so that they may
ride, has cost them $15,000. I for one would rather walk, be
independent, even if I have to fight for my privilege of using the public
highway.
I am not opposed to any Chiropractor, whether he be good or bad. The
poorest can accomplish more good than a medical man with his bugs and
dope. Yet, I would much rather know that each Chiropractor was
proficient in all that pertains toward making him or her competent in
everything that goes to make an intelligent, up-to-date Chiropractor;
but there are those who are not financially able to acquire this knowledge
and others who do not care to know more than the bare rudiments. The
discerning public will choose those whom they think the most proficient.
Page 156
Chiropractic is a name given to the study of the etiology of disease,
and the art of restoring to normal all morbific conditions.
Chiropractic is a name I originated to designate the science and art of
adjusting vertebrae. It does not relate to the study of etiology, or any branch
of medicine. Chiropractic includes the science and art of adjusting
vertebraethe know how and the doing. Restoring morbid conditions to
normal is the result of the art of adjusting. The study of the causation of
diseasethe sum of knowledge regarding the causes of disease is the
science of etiologynot the art.
Page 225
When Chiropractic was an infant I jealously watched its development
and growth. But there came a time when unprincipled shysters tried to
change its principles. There are many claiming to practice Chiropractic who know but little of it as a science.
Page 256
The sick need help, not drugs nor incantations.
Page 280
[ 55 ]

Chiropractic seldom fails, and never does harm when properly

handled.
Page 309
Superstitious ideas concerning health, disease life and death have
been perpetuated by unthinking persons. The superstitious belief that
disease is an entity, something foreign to the body which may enter it from
without; that disease is goetic, magical; that wizards, witches, sorcerers and
sorceresses, possess a supernatural or magical power and have a compact
with devils, demons and evil spirits to use this power to injure, destroy
mankind and animals, and thru their devilish black art and magic, stir up
storms, damage crops, bring sickness and death, confound and change the
laws of nature; and all this by an express agreement with the evil ones; that
disease is a creature of intelligence with which the body must struggle, fight
and conquer, or succumb to its ravages, is no longer tenable.
Students of Chiropractic should constantly remember that disease is
not a thing, but a condition It is an abnormal performance of certain
morphological alterations of the body. Agencies and conditions which the
body cannot adapt itself to, sway the capacities of energy above or below
normal, inducing the functional aberrations and structural alterations known
as dis-ease.
Page 358
Chiropractic Defined
The Philosophy of Chiropractic is founded upon the knowledge of the
manner in which vital functions are performed by Innate in health and
disease. When this controlling intelligence is able to transmit mental
impulses to all parts of the body, free and unobstructed, we have normal
action which is health.
Page 399
Knowing that our physical health and the intellectual progress of
Innate (the personified portion of Universal Intelligence) depend upon the
proper alignment of the skeletal frame, we feel it our bounden duty to
replace any displaced bones so that physical and spiritual health, happiness
and the full fruition of earthly life may be fully enjoyed.
Page 399
Chiropractors
During vacation I had the pleasure of meeting a dozen Chiropractors
in Seattle.
While passing an office, I noticed on a window, Chiropractic among
several methods of treating the
[ 56 ]

sick. I called; the doctor was not in. A lady answered my call and many
questions. She informed me that they had several different methods; that
they picked the best of each; that Osteopaths used the fingers and the
Chiropractors the thumbs when treating. She showed me an Osteopathic
chart, which contained cuts of four spines. From it, and her explanations, I
learned that disease was caused by the vertebrae compressing the
cartilage, making it thinner and the holes which pinched the nerves smaller.
When satisfied that I had learned enough for one lesson, I introduced myself
by giving her my card and hand, and informed her that she knew nothing
about Chiropractic.
I called at the office of another Chiropractor. The doctor was not in. A
patient answered several questions. She told me that it took Dr. Blank an
hour to give a treatment; that he sometimes used his thumbs, fingers and
fists. She had also taken Osteopathic treatments. She thought one was about
as good as the other, if not better. The main difference was that the Chiropractor used a vibrator and the Osteopath did not. Dr. Blank had paid
$500 to learn Chiropractic. She had lumbago. The doctor used the vibrator
to strengthen her back. She said he was a nice man; he was studying
everything he could find on Chiropractic.
I called upon another Chiropractor. I could not play green with him for
he had seen my picture. That was not the first time that my picture
prevented me from learning something. He treated me nicely; took me in his
adjusting room. A vibrator told me that it was also a treating room. Patient
had hemiplegia. I saw him make an examination. I watched him several
minutes, how many more he would have needed to complete it I do not
know. Tiring of seeing him pinch the cuticle over and around the spine, I
gave one stroke with my hand and showed him the vertebra displaced. He
had not made a single palpating move. He then began stretching the spine
with his hands so that he might adjust the vertebra. He was pleased to
receive instructions. He was not above learning as are some practitioners
who hold me off at arms length and receive nothing. The Chiropractor
Adjuster is certainly needed to teach the principles of the science and adjust
pseudo Chiropractic.
A physician in Seattle told me that a dressmaker took a six weeks
course and hung out her shingle as a Chiropractor. I know of a more
extraordinary incident
[ 57 ]

than this. One Goldsmith listened to an hours lecture, attended a clinic,

immediately secured an office in East Portland and placed on his windows
in four-inch gold letters, Dr. Goldsmith, Chiropractic Sinologist. His
disappearance was almost as sudden as his appearance. As Chiropractors
increase, the incompetents will be weeded out. Therefore, it stands each
practitioner in hand to make himself competent. If he is not, he will be as a
weed in the way of advancement.
Pages 423 and 424
The late discovery is that disease is the result of bone pressure on
nerves, and that to remove that pressure is to relieve the cause, correct the
wrong and bring relief, are statements which form the basis of the science
of Chiropractic.
Page 479
Many patients imagine that they have tried everything. True, they
have used many remedies, but they have never had the cause of their
infirmity adjusted.
Page 517
The Howard system of Chiropractic. I presume that The Howard
system is more or less Chiropractic, as outlined in a booklet of 32 pages.
What Howard knows of Chiropractic he learned of the Palmers. He opened
an office with a drug doctor. He retained some of the drug system and at
that time did not get all of Chiropractic. He must have imbibed some of it
later while associated in business, although he states the Howard system is
a drugless healing system. The Howard system is one of the many healing
systems. Chiropractic is not a healing system. All healing systems use
remedies supposed to contain some inherent quality which acts as an
antidote, or as an assistant in combating disease. Chiropractic is not one
of the healing arts; it does not use remedies; it does not treat diseases.
It is the only system that claims to, and does, adjust the cause of ailments.
Chiropractic is a drugless system, but it is not a healing system.
We find several ear marks which belong to the medical profession,
such as a powerful factor in aiding nature to throw off disease; disease is
vanquished and completely banished. He will equip his students to combat
disease. He ends by saying, What you have learned will not have to be
learned again. A student of the above mixture of drug and Chiropractic
principles will have to unlearn much before embracing all there is known
in the science. The same cranium can[ 59 ]

not be filled with a drug education and that of Chiropractic. This

booklet abounds with medical terms, such as other methods of treatment,
just as though Chiropractic was one of them, which it is not. Chiropractic
system of treatment; other methods of treatment. Chiropractic is not a
method of treatment. Revolutionizing the various curative methods. We
are not changing other methods. Chiropractic is peculiarly a method of
its own; it is unlike any other; it is not built upon, or out of others. It
cures where all else fails. This is copied from a stereotyped plate used by
every advertising quack.
Pages 557-558
Those who contemplate entering a profession will find in Chiropractic
a golden gateway to success. No work is more noble than that of alleviating
humanity from suffering. There is no system of healing that begets so much
interest as the study of Chiropractic; the affection is traced to where nerves
are impinged upon and in acute cases the impingement relieved by one or
two adjustments. Fever cases are returned to normal temperature in a few
minutes.
Page 585
Our readers and the members of our class expect to have their corns
stepped on, until they have learned that it is better not to have thembetter
to have the cause adjusted. They realize, to grow Chiropractically, their
opinions must be changed by removing mental impingements. What if it
does hurt a moment, if the result is o.k. ?
Page 604
When I was created, policy was not included in my make-up. I
have as little use and respect for policy as I have for a plug hat. I am
sorry that I am placed in a position wherein I must use policydeceit.
Chiropractic and honesty have no use for policy; either are good enough
without it. I could slide through the world much more easily if I had more
respect for policy and less for honesty. Instead of saying that Honesty is
the best policy, I would say that Honesty has no need of policy.
Page 615
The man who bangs his head against hard facts, feels his bumps of
approbation.
Page 666
The man who had the intellectual capacity to comprehend the
displacement of vertebrae; the mental ability to grasp the significance of
nerve impingement; the power to conceive and discriminate between normal
and

abnormal positions; the foresight and wisdom to discern the outcome; the
genius of originality to create such a unique science; the judgment needed
for the occasion; the brain caliber capable of reasoning on this heretofore
perplexing questionthe cause of disease; the sense of touch required to
discover a racked vertebra and the skill and tact to replace it, was the one
destined to discover and develop the science which he named Chiropractic.Page 701
Sheeps clothing will not change the nature of the wolf, neither
will second-hand goods become first handed because of their being
placed in a fountain. Water will not wash out deception, fraud and
chicanery. Such trickery will not satisfy the public or the avariciousness of
the one who is waiting just like a hungry wolf for a dinner.
Page 728
Chiropractic is not a science because it stands in public favor nor
because of its marvelous results.
Chiropractic is a science because it comprises a knowledge of facts
concerning health and disease. This knowledge reduced to law and
embodied in a system makes it a science. Knowledge of a single fact or of
many facts of several systems do not make a science. Knowledge of many
facts concerning one subject, correlated in a system, creates a science.

Your thots are of little value unless you intelligently use them.
Page 742
Nothing is as wholesome as a clear conscience. You may be able to
get away from those whom you have wronged, but away from yourself,
never.
Page 810
Science is knowledge; ascertained facts; accumulated information of
causes and principles systematized. I ascertained these truths, acquired
instruction, heretofore unrecognized, regarding the performance of
functions in health and disease. I systematized and correlated these
principles, made them practical. By so doing I created, brought into
existence, originated a science, which I named Chiropractic; therefore I am
a scientist. I systematized the principles I discovered; I have reasoned from
cause to effect; searched into the nature of physiologic and pathologic
processes; investigated the phenomena embraced in health and dis[ 60 ]

ease; assigned rational causes for the existence of normal and abnormal
functions; answered the question, What is life; and founded a science and
philosophy upon the basic principle of tone. This knowledge I have given to
the world; therefore I am a philosopher.
Page 818
Some Chiropractors waste much time using adjuncts. If this time
was utilized in studying the principles of Chiropractic and their application,
the profession would be advanced. Adjunct users should read and
study Chiropractic literature; but, these are the ones who do not care
to advance.
Page 824
A knowledge of the principles of Chiropractic, as developed by the
founder, is necessary for the success of the Chiropractor.
Page 871
Chiropractors and jewelers do not treat or cure, do not prescribe
or apply remedies when they adjust, fix or repair displacements of bones
or watches. They do not use salve or other preparations to soothe or
mollify abnormal functioning in living organisms, or when correcting an
unreliable timekeeper.

HISTORY REPEATS
In 1925-26, we fought another battle similar to this we NOW present. We
issued a booklet titled SHALL THE P.S.C. SURVIVE ?
In 1944, we fought another battle similar to this we NOW present. We issued
a booklet titled STUBBORN FACTSSTUBBORN FACTS.
The presentation of evidence THEN was what SAVED Chiropractic THEN.
Elements of crises then are similar to those we present NOW. Antagonisms we
fought THEN are the same character we fight NOW. A review of those two books
show THE SAME complexion of attacks to drive ChiropracTIC out, and medicine
IN. We WON those battles THEN; we will win THIS BATTLE NOW. Every so
often a new cross breed enters, another situation arises, which must be explained to
prevent ANOTHER generation getting grandiose ideas which would destroy them
as well as us.

Bitter? Who has a better right to be? Why shouldnt I be, when I see the NCA
laud and toast D. D. Palmer ONE DAY of the year, and then destroy all he
discovered and advo[ 61 ]

cated the other 364 days of the year in their publications, conventions, and exhibits?
It is MY heritage to protect, defend, and preserve my fathers brilliant world-wide
discovery of the ONLY principle of the cause and cure of all dis-ease, locating THE
KEY which restores health from Innate above-downward, inside-out, which fills
the vacuum made by medical failures. To see the NCA drag him in the mud, washed
down the sewer thru the machinations of three or four men who dont care what
happens TO ChiropracTIC or ChiropracTORS, preaching, practicing, poaching on
the legitimate territory of other professions. You unsuspecting ChiropracTORS
should refuse to be made SLAVES with those detestable schemes.

GOOD ADVICE
Pertinent and timely advice is given by Mortimer Levine, D.C., in August,
1958, NCA Journal, under the title:
THREE PERTINENT SUGGESTIONS AIMED AT
PERPETUATING OUR PROFESSION.
a. MORE AND MORE non-chiropractic doctors ARE ADOPTING
AND USING ONE WORD NAMES SUCH AS PHYSIOTHERAPY,
PHYSICAL MEDICINE, AND PHYSICAL THERAPY. Do you know
there are now 350 physiatrists and 9,000 physical therapists in the United
States, and that this number is increasing every year?
More and more CHIROPRACTORS, under NCA encouragement and advice,
ARE adopting and using physiatry, physical medicine and physical therapy under
the good, substantial and reliable name OF CHIROPRACTIC.
b. A glance through the history OF MEDICINE shows that MANY
OF THE GREAT HEALTH ACHIEVEMENTS that medicine proclaims as
its very own WERE DISCOVERED BY NON-MEDICAL men and nonmedical healing arts.
This is true of everything Chiropractic. Born of a fish peddler, a magnetic
healer, developed by one with little scholastic education, not two years precollegiate training, no basic sciences, but HE DID KNOW THE PRINCIPLE
AND PRACTICE OF CHIROPRACTIC did get sick people well.
There wouldnt be ONE CHIROPRACTOR TODAY, PRACTICING
CHIROPRACTIC today, enjoying practices, homes, automobiles, wealth of
untold millions, if it hadnt been for the knowledge of this one ignorant boy,
directly or indirectly imparted to them, and they received from the fruits of HIS
labor. There wouldnt be ONE of you IN THIS TENT tonight. Thankful?
[ 62 ]

Remember, THE PENALTY OF LEADERSHIP!

c. One has only to look at homeopathy and osteopathy FOR
CONFIRMATION OF HOW MEDICINE SWALLOWS AND
ASSIMILATES THE RIVAL HEALING ARTS IT CANNOT
SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE WITH. When this digestive phase is
completed, THE END PRODUCT IS NO LONGER RECOGNIZABLE.
The rough road established by the NCA is headed exactly the same direction
WITH CHIROPRACTIC. Medicine swallowed osteopathy. NCA has been and is
greasing the slippery toboggan gravitating CHIROPRACTIC into the jaws of
medicine also.
d. Are we going to let this happen to Chiropractic ? I am sure that our
response is in the negative. Then what are we going to do about it? Before
we can do anything, we must understand that mans inner convictions must
precede mans outward action.
We wish the statement of Dr. Levine WERE true, that the response is in the
negative. NCA policies, programs, conventions, speakers, exhibits, ALL point to a
POSITIVE, headstrong, head-long dive into brutal oblivion.
e. As a rational being, man does not move without due cause. It is
completely false to presume that correct action can occur in advance of
correct thinking. The currents of energy, which drive each of us,
ORIGINATE WITHIN US AND MOVE OUTWARD. THESE
CURRENTS CANNOT BE REVERSED. It is important that this tenet of
nerve system fundamental be understood.
Strangely, almost mystically, man tends to become that upon which he
concentrates.
We agree that the tenet of nerve system fundamental be understood. What
must be done to see that our schools KNOW THAT, TEACH THAT, when 90 per
cent of their semesters are AWAY FROM THAT? Man DOES tend TO
BECOME THAT UPON WHICH HE CONCENTRATES. The NCA has been
and is concentrating every endeavor, bending backward to break their backs, that
lead INTO medicine and AWAY FROM Chiropractic.
f. Let us make the term chiropractic SYNONYMOUS WITH ALL
MANIPULATIVE PROCEDURES, both in the minds of the public and any
doctor who uses our techniques, KEEPING AWARE THAT THE BASIC
PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING CHIROPRACTIC ARE SO SOUND,
THEIR APPLICATION OFTEN WORKS IN THE HANDS OF THE
UNSKILLED, MEDICAL MEN, AND THOSE OF OUR OWN PEO[ 63 ]

PLE WHO UNDERSTAND IT ONLY AS A PRACTICE METHOD

AND NOT AS A PHILOSOPHY AND DOCTRINE.
Perhaps the most important, we must buttress and strengthen our
schools so that they graduate Chiropractic doctors, who are so erudite in
matters of health and disease that the reputation of the chiropractic doctor
as a superior healer will continue to spread to the four corners of the globe.
Chiropractic will then be truly recognized as the greatest and most
effective healing science, which has come to bless humanity.
Note the contradiction, the easy appeasement suggested:
Let us make the term chiropractic synonymous with ALL
MANIPULATIVE PROCEDURES * * *
and how he contradicts this with:
* * * the BASIC PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING CHIROPRACTIC
ARE SO SOUND their application often works in the hands * * * OF OUR
OWN PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND it only as a practice method AND
NOT as a philosophy and doctrine.
Would that NCA manipulators knew this!
How true, when he says:
Chiropractic WILL THEN be truly recognized as THE GREATEST
AND MOST EFFECTIVE healing science which has come to bless
humanity.
This can NEVER come IF NCA polities and programs prevail. They are driving
it into the chasms of annihilation.

What travesty are those proposals of Dr. Rogers when he declared that all NCA
suggestions be thrown open to common use by our people, when he said:
would make UNIFORM the PRACTICE PRIVILEGES of all doctors

THEIR OFFEROUR ANSWER

The NCA Journal (P. 47, Sept.) is a full page ad announcing the
VITAMINERALS scholarship acceptances by NCA schools. Herewith THEIR
letter to us April 25, 58, and our reply.
We would be derelict in our duty to and respect FOR
[ 64 ]

CHIROPRACTIC if we were anything BUT CONSISTENT. We could not

HONORABLY accept ANY scholarship based on profits made from selling
VITAMINERALS to our CHIROPRACTIC profession. It would not be fair to
them, or to us, to accept scholarships from them, based on cash received from
selling Vitaminerals to our people, who, in turn sold it to patients AS A PART OF
CHIROPRACTIC service, and then instruct our students that VITAMINERALS
WAS NOT CHIROPRACTIC, advising our students to NOT BUY or sell them as
MEDICAL products which put students in The PSC CHIROPRACTIC school. The
least we can do, in such an instance, is to maintain OUR self-respect and loyalty to
pro-chiropractic which is anti-medicine.

The Palmer School of Chiropractic
Davenport, Iowa
Good Morning, Dr. Palmer:
It was with a great deal of interest that I read your article entitled,
Must We Go The Same Way, appearing on the Presidents page of the
June, 1957, issue of the International Review of Chiropractic. I was particularly moved by your conclusion, which appeared on page five . . . Lets
make it possible for more prospective students to learn how TO BE
CHIROPRACTORS . . . for it paralleled my own thinking, and supported
our long-held belief that THE FUTURE OF ANY ART lies in the hands of
youth, and if the art of healing THROUGH THE METHODS OF
CHIROPRACTIC IS TO BE PERPETUATEDto thrive and growit
must be through the interest of young men and women in the profession.
While such an interest may occasionally be spontaneous or selfgenerating, it is far more likely to require activation . . . and clearly this is a
functionif not the dutyof the present generation of chiropractic
practitioners. Only THROUGH THE ENTHUSIASTIC PROMOTION OF
CHIROPRACTIC as a career among the young can the practice REMAIN
A STRONG, DYNAMIC FORCE in the years to come. And it is about our
Chiropractic Scholarship Fund, and its assistance to a number of deserving
young people each year, who, without such financial help would be
[ 65 ]

denied the opportunity of working for a chiropractic degree, that I write to

you today.
With the recent establishment of the Vitaminerals Chiropractic
Scholarship Fund, or organization, which has been honored to serve the
chiropractic profession for over a quarter of a century, has announced
grants-in-aid under the Fund, available to exceptional young men and
women throughout the United States and Canada, offering the opportunity
to secure an education at the accredited college of chiropractic OF THEIR
SELECTION, leading to the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic.
It is the purpose of the Fund to encourage young men and women to
pursue the acquisition of a degree of Doctor of Chiropractic, to whom this
opportunity might otherwise be denied, purely through lack of financial
capabilities. A grant-in-aid TO THE RECOGNIZED COLLEGES OF
CHIROPRACTIC is available to promising young men and women who
can establish the need for part or full financial assistance. The grant-in-aid
covers part or all of the tuition cost, together with equipment, books,
supplies and laboratory fees, depending on the individuals established
need. We intend that there will be one such grant-in-aid FOR EACH OF
THE RECOGNIZED COLLEGES, provided under the Fund each year.
It is only natural, Dr. Palmer, that with the formation and availability
of grant-in-aid under the Fund, THAT WE SHOULD COME TO YOU
AND TO THE PALMER SCHOOL OF CHIROPRACTIC, regarding the
availability of such grants-in-aid. We would be most honored to underwrite
the various costs mentioned above for one student entering the Palmer
School of Chiropractic each year, so as to play some small part in attaining
a goal which we both recognize as all-important . . . that being, of course,
enlargement of the chiropractic profession, through the only avenue possible
. . . its colleges.
I am taking the liberty of enclosing with this letter a copy of our
announcement of grants-in-aid under our Scholarship Fund, and would
deeply appreciate your review and comments concerning it.
It is our single purpose, Dr. Palmer, TO FURTHER THE INTERESTS
OF YOUR PROFESSION in the years ahead; to help assure a continuous
and vigorous growth and perpetuation OF THAT PHILOSOPHY AND
IDEALISM WHICH YOU SHARE with your col[ 66 ]

leagues, and WHICH HAS MADE CHIROPRACTIC THE GREAT

FORCE IN THE HEALING ARTS. So we hope that we may work with
you in this pursuit in the months and years to come.
We shall look forward to your answer with a great deal of interest. In
closing, may I send my most sincere
Kindest regards,

Dear Mr. Gorman:
We do sincerely appreciate your interest in CHIROPRACTIC and your
offer of a scholarship fund, but we wish you to remember that The Palmer
School of Chiropractic is a strictly CHIROPRACTIC school, relying
ENTIRELY on the use of the CHIROPRACTIC principle and practice, and
not wandering off into any other field, regardless.
With that thought in mind, we know you will understand and forgive
us. That has been our forte all our life, and always will be.
We do appreciate your writing us, and hope we may continue in your
good graces.
Sincerely yours,

CHIROPRACTIC PILL PUSHERS
The NCA encourages buying, selling and pushing pills down throats of
chiropractic patients. (See ads in The NCA Journal.)
Let us meditate:
A chiropractic patient doesnt wait until he catches something to take a pill.
He goes to some chiropractors who give him one, or sell him some. The poor sap
takes a pill in hopes he wont catch it in the first place. If he cant sleep, he is told
by some chiropractors to take a pill. Then the next day he
[ 67 ]

is told by some family chiropractor to take another kind of pill to keep awake. If
the patient becomes slow and lethargic he is told to take still another kind of pill to
keep awake. Then he takes another to slow down his pulse and nerves. One pill, so
he is told by some chiropractors peps him up and another slows him down. If his
appetite becomes jaded he is again told by some chiropractor pill pushers, to take
a pill to make him spring to the table with enthusiasm. In about a week, he is taking
another pill to help him reduce. Part of the game is to swap pill experience to see
which chiropractor sells him or advises him to take the most pills. A patient is a
virtual wallflower if he cant or doesnt discuss pills some chiropractor sees and
reads about in The NCA Journal. And that goes for women, too, because The NCA
Journal reports they use more than men. What seems to be most needed is a pill for
some chiropractors to take which will end his habit of pushing pills into patients.

IF CHIROPRACTIC IS TO SURVIVE
the TIC keeps on growing more simple, getting sick people well quicker.
the TOR becomes more complex, knowing what less to do to get sick people well.
the ICA grows stronger, rendering more service to TIC AND TOR.
the NCA is dying because of dry-rot and fungus virus and enforced barnacles to
TIC and TOR.
Quit juggling TIC trying to make it into a bastard medicine.
Quit forcing it downward as osteopathy has gone.
Quit forcing TORS like cattle, stampeding them to the NCA slaughter.
TIC gets ON THE BACK and stays there.
Some TORS get over on and into the belly, losing themselves into its bowels.
State and National associations need educate TORS to MORE TIC, and less of
rubbish which dilutes their service getting sick people well. LESS enforced
legislation and more individual liberties for TIC and TOR.
FREEDOM OF CHOICE for renewal of licenses is imperative if TORS are to
be free to come and go where they wish.
EDUCATION to a BETTER TIC is more far-reaching than DRASTIC
LEGISLATION restricting where you must go, what you must do, to renew a
license.
The NCA enforces legal hand-cuffs and leg-irons. The ICA believes in training
people to think right, act right, so right can prevail.
The ICA thinks it better to keen LARGE TIC issues
[ 68 ]

LARGE and small TOR issues SMALL.

The NCA practices strangulation of small TOR things, making them large; and
large TIC issues, making them small.
NOW is THE time for all true, tried, and not-found-wanting TORS to SAVE
TIC. IT needs YOU and YOU need IT. PROTECT IT against NCA pitfalls.
Righteous passiveness gets no where when evils are aggressively killing TIC and
TORS.

Our convictions and ideals of service to a sick world will not permit our mind to
remain inactive, our mouth silent, or our language anything but bitter at what is
taking place. Where there is Innate life, there is Innate hope.
If the NCA program continues, they will have a two-day enforced attendance at
state levels so every Chiropractor practicing in that state will BE COMPELLED to
attend that particular convention to get his license renewed. The monkey-wrench is
at work, sand is in the bearings, works are being plugged, pincers are closing
against you and your liberties for the wrecking crew is out to wreck all all hold
dear.
Pioneers have to fight to establish themselves. To each and every one who has
fought in behalf of the TIC, we are thankful. More important, however, are the
multitudes served by the TIC. Our responsibilityyours and mine, jointly and
severallyis to perpetuate TIC. Forces WITHIN as well as the enemy WITHOUT
are endangering TIC. Each and every one who believes in TIC and practices TIC
must now fight FOR that TIC.
As your leader, or General if such it be, we have paid the penalty all our lives.
We will continue to lead a Chiropractic army; but when we see mutiny occurring,
with some of our people laying down arms and letting enemies ride over them
rough-shod, destroying them person to person, state by state, legislatively, then it is
time to take notice of what is occurring and do one of two things: quit and take our
remaining years in peace, surrendering with disgrace to enemies; or maintain the
battle until it is won. This can be done only backed by you with your support wholeheartedlynot with words, but with deeds.
This IS a battle no ONE man can fight alone and win. It calls for mass armies
of true, loyal, self-dedicated people worthy of the cause they espouse.
Decide NOW to save what we have against wolves who are forging chains
around your minds and muscles; hand-cuffing and leg-ironing free thot, desire, and
action.
Now is the hour to rebel against all legalistic-communism attempting to make
all into slave laborers in the field of getting sick people well.
NOW is THE HOUR FOR ACTION. You true blue, sincere,
[ 69 ]

and honest Chiropractors who know what Chiropractic is and does for the sick
should rise in wrath and save our profession TODAY for the sick of tomorrow; or it
will go down the path of osteopathy and be absorbed as they are and werenot because medical men BELIEVE what YOU have, but to absorb, swallow, and destroy
something which DOES what THEY CANT. They did this with homeopathy,
electicism, now osteopathy. TOMORROW there will be NO Chiropractic,
Chiropractors, or Chiropractic profession IF the NCA continues to drive TIC and
TOR in the direction they NOW head.
I made MY decision 63 years ago. WHAT IS YOURS?
Is this discussion and admonition idle chatter?
Ask those who have their eyes open observing trends; who have ears glued to
the ground; who see, hear, and know. Look, and you CAN AND WILL SEE. Open
your minds to your responsibilities to ChiropracTIC and your profession, and to a
sick people who cry, plead, pray to you to save them from suffering, and to prolong
their lives.

IF OUR PROFESSION WANTS TO DRIVE CHIROPRACTIC INTO

IF OUR PEOPLE WANT TO MAKE LEGISLATIVE SLAVES OF

Dr. Griffin, writing to The ICA Board Aug. 19, 1958, says:
It is my opinion that THE GREATEST THREAT TO OUR
profession is the naturopathic element in the profession and the
determination of The NCA to expand and establish chiropractors in the
minds of the public and legally as a complete DRUGLESS OR
PHYSIOTHERAPY and general practitioners.
I presume all the officials of the ICA make it a point to keep informed
and know that the NCA policies and efforts have predominated the
profession the past 15 years.
I also trust you are aware of the new 6 points program of the NCA
including a definition of the science WHICH DOES NOT MEET THE
QUALIFICATIONS of a definition of a science and a scope of practice
which includes PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING. And a plea of 14
projects to promote their 6 point program.
The ICA to undertake and underwrite a long-range educational program to the
profession designed to:
a. Establish a definition of the science of chiropractic in phraseology
that meets the standards of definitions of a science void of what we do, how
we do it or why, but embracing the basic fundamental, removal of nerve
interference for restoration and maintenance of health, and a scope of
practice that is consistent with the name and definition of the science of
chiropractic.
b. To establish the chiropractors as specialists of the spine and nerve
interference.
c. Alternative of special certification and licensure for those desiring to
practice beyond the scope of practice or use supplementary practices.
d. The folly and danger of present trend toward naturopathic practice
and naturopathic element dictating policy of chiropractic organizations.
e. Break down the concept that ICA is ONE school, ONE man, ONE
technique organization.
f. Follow thru with action programs to prove words.
[ 71 ]

WE PROPOSE
We propose a 100 per cent constructive saving and perpetuating-program for
ChiropracTIC and chiropracTORS:
I. That ALL Chiropractic schools and colleges, whether NCA or ICA
accredited, teach ONLY ChiropracTIC, confining ALL instruction to subjects
which are in keeping with its principle, or closely allied to it without deviating from
the spirit of that principle; such instructions to be without evasions or ambiguous
equivocations.

2. That, because of such chiropracTIC instructions, graduates of ALL schools

reach a unified common understanding of the broad and unlimited philosophical
scope of chiropracTIC practice without being mixed with antipodal theories of other
devious methods of contrary schools which treat dis-eases, per se, by medical
methods rather than adjust internal causes and restoring internal cures.

3. That chiropractors, having graduated from accredited chiropractic schools

requiring four years of training, be exempt by legislative amendment from taking
examinations before any Basic Science Board because of triplication of
examinations on same subjects: a. in schools they graduated from; b. same subjects
before Basic Science Boards; c. same subjects before Chiropractic State Boards.

4. That ALL State Associations holding conventions, confine speakers, subjects

discussed, and all exhibits to be those allied interests which are chiropracTIC; and
none shall be countenanced of those of other professions which sidetrack minds of
listeners away from securing a broader and more practical education IN
CHIROPRACTIC.

5. That ChiropracTIC be defined and confined within the limitations and

borders of ITS principle and practice, and no effort shall be made to attempt to
incorporate any other contradictory and antipodal principles and practices which
minimize the efficiency of its profession or professional membership.

5-A. That the following definition and scope of practice be adopted for
legislative purposes:
Chiropractic is a philosophy of the source and development of internal
human functions from above-down, inside-out, the science of determining
the location of the interference to the normal flow of mental impulse
between source in brain and function in body thru the nervous system; and,
the art of adjusting
[ 72 ]

vertebral subluxations, by hand only, which produces pressures upon spinal

cord or spinal nerves, to allow for the restoration of a normal mental
impulse flow so that Innate Intelligence, resident within each living body
has a full free flow in the re-establishment and restoration of health.

That ALL national associations confine and define chiropractic in such simple
language, thereby protecting chiropracTIC and rights of chiropracTORS to practice
chiropracTIC, defeating any and all designs and desires to usurp the means,
methods, or principles and practice of other professions.

7. That each such state or national convention restrict its membership to those
who profess to practice chiropracTIC, avoiding any and all allied medical methods
regardless of name, character, or purpose, wherein the intent is to try to gain
medical respectability or public social standing by playing DOWN to ignorances
of the public in contrast between.

8. That all PR relations, by individuals, state or national associations, be of a

distinctive chiropracTIC educational nature, omitting any advocacy or support to
any medical methods or any so-called allied natural treatment methods; or
common territory in the public domain, knowing there IS NO public domain
betwixt and between medicine and chiropracTIC, or between medical and
chiropracTIC legislation, or between medical men and chiropracTORS.

9. That when health of the public is involved, legislators have seen fit to protect
public health from unscrupulous manipulators, taking its direction out of private
hands, placing same in responsible state-appointed groups because of so much deception perpetrated upon the unsuspecting innocent sick. This occasions medicaI,
osteopathic, and chiropractic practice acts to protect the sick. When any of this
control becomes overbearing, inconsistent, and unreasonable, within the purview of
the subject under control, their downfall ALSO becomes a matter of legislative and
legal consideration for control.
The mills of the gods grind slowly but surely.

10. That all NCA, as well as all state conventions, be Chiropractic, which they
profess to be. Speakers whose subject matter IS FOREIGN to chiropractic, and all
exhibits be
[ 73 ]

denied to pharmaceutical or medical supply persons, organizations, or houses, and

they be prohibited from buying space.

11. To further the interests of chiropracTIC and chiropracTORS who faithfully

follow its principles and practices, we suggest they withdraw all memberships and
financial supports from any national or state association which deliberately and
purposely sells their chiropractic birthright for a mess of financial pottage, either by
publicity in publications, by speakers, or by subjects discussed at meetings, or by
exhibits from which they derive financial gain.

12. That there be no restrictions in any so-called Code of Ethics which prohibits
plausible chiropractic freedom of choice as to charity rendered or prices charged,
or which in any way prohibit chiropractic educational means of publicity so long as
what is said, printed, or distributed be honest, true, and truthful, which can be
sustained and proven to be true and truthful in a court of law with evidence to
sustain such.

13. That all legislative definitions be confined within the purview of the
chiropractic principle and practice, intentionally avoiding arbitrary and subtle
inclusions of any deviations of any other healing arts which are not chiropractic.

14. That no legislative amendments be supported by any chiropractor, any state

association, or any national association which abrogates to itself in any minor or
major respect, which RESTRICTS the liberties of the chiropractor in attending
ANY OTHER convention ANYWHERE, where chiropracTIC is the topic of
speakers, subject discussed, or where exhibits pervert the scope of chiropractic
practice; such attendance at ANY OTHER convention anywhere to be credited as
SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE of good faith for renewal of license in ANY state
regardless of where such convention and attendance is certified, as sufficient to be a
bona fide attendance of not less than two days duration.

15. All two-day ENFORCED attendance, legislatively and legally now

compulsory, BE RESCINDED by legislative amendment because of its invasion
into personal professional rights, as such is arbitrary and empiric slavery within the
border of each state, and is in no sense a test of the proficiency or efficiency of the
chiropracTOR to render a better chiropracTIC service to the sick, especially when
some state conventions, in the very deplorable and primitive nature of speakers,
undesired subjects
[ 74 ]

chosen and presented, stupid exhibits in halls, limit compulsory attendance to listen
to talks which belittle and dilute his chiropracTIC aspiration of service.

16. If, however, the state association or state board, having such a two-day
enforced attendance ruling, and the speakers, subjects discussed or exhibits ARE
STRICTLY WITHIN THE PURVIEW OF THE CHIROPRACTIC PRINCIPLE
AND PRACTICE, then there shall be no objection to those who wish to go beyond
the purview of chiropractic and shall have the rights to attend in some other state
where FOREIGN SUBJECTS WERE presented, in which event the first state shall
respect his liberties of thot and practice and still grant a renewal of his license, even
tho absent from the state in which he practices.

17. That if any state having a two-day enforced and restrictive registration for
renewal of license persists in and intends to have as speakers, subjects presented,
and exhibits, other than chiropractic, then such a state association or state board
SHALL RELINQUISH enforcing such a rule upon those who do NOT wish to
attend and be forced to listen to speakers and subjects offensive to their chiropractic
convictions, releasing them from his obligatory attendance granting them attendance freedom that they may attend some other meeting of their untrammeled
choice, and still get their license renewed in that state of their residence.

18. FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Upon proper presentation of proper credentials

attested to by proper officials OF SOME OTHER state or national convention of
chiropractors, wherein the two-day clause might be required in any one state, then,
upon proper payment of the fee required in any one state, his license SHALL BE
renewed.

19. That all state boards confine their questions and rating of answers to state
board examinations within the purview of the chiropractic principle, practice, and
subjects pertaining to such as taught in CHIROPRACTIC schools and colleges, to
quality the examinee in his fitness to guard public health in practicing
chiropractic.

20. That all state board rules and regulations be within the limits of respect for
the freedom of the examinee in his inherent moral rights to do those things in
those ways which have the impartial regard for his expedient chiropractic rights
[ 75 ]

to get sick people well, thus also respecting and guarding the rights of the sick TO
GET WELL.

21. That chiropractic state boards, having taken an oath to uphold the
chiropractic practice act of that state, revoke the license of any chiropractor
practicing with a chiropractic license granted him to practice CHIROPRACTIC,
upon evidence and proof submitted to the board that the licensee misrepresented,
deceitfully deceived the sick into claims beyond his abilities to deliver, or practiced
other than what is interpreted AS chiropractic under the statute of the state in which
the license was issued, or contrary to the state in which he practices, regardless of
some other statute in some other state in which the license might have been issued,
granting the licensee the right to practice. This ruling would protect the public in
that state against fraudulent services rendered under a license not granting those
privileges.

22. Chiropractic practice acts were passed by legislatures with the

understanding of legislators that its Board of Examiners were to examine the fitness
of its applicants to PRACTICE CHIROPRACTIC to safeguard the health of its
people. The HOUR HAS PASSED when ANY so-called CHIROPRACTIC Board
should examine on any and all compromising subjects in all therapeutical fields. To
do such is to put all schools into a quandary as to what to teach, to know what
character of questions any and all boards will ask to prove whether he is fit TO BE
A CHIROPRACTOR on a semi-quasi smattering of a little bit of everything else in
the entire gamut of therapeutical fields.

23. ALL Chiropractic Boards should confine ALL questions and examine ALL
answers based on ALL Chiropractic questions and answers. There should be NO
questions asked or rated on ANY OTHER subject or subjects contained in any other
therapeutic field.

24. That all who profess to believe in and have faith in the perpetuity of the
chiropractic principle and practice, knowing it gets more sick people well than other
methods or means, should join the ICAthe ONE organization that has been
consistently and is now fighting to retain the identity and purity of this work for
posterity, to retain the liberties of our people against any and all direct and indirect
aggression infiltrated into our ranks under the guise of the good name of
chiropractic.
[ 76 ]

IF THE SPIRIT INCULCATED WITHIN THESE SIMPLE RULES IS

MAINTAINED WITH SINCERE AND HONEST INTENT UPON PART OF
ALL INVOLVED, CHIROPRACTIC CAN BECOME THE GREATEST,
FINEST, LARGEST, MOST PRACTICAL, MOST DELIBERATE AND
FACTUAL, MOST REALISTIC METHOD IN THE HISTORY OF THE
WORLD GETTING A LARGER PERCENTAGE OF SICK PEOPLE
WELL THAN ANY OTHER.
