Integrated Research Methods

The first test 28.11.2015.

1. Give the list of main steps for the research process!
Clarifying the research question
Define the management question
Refine the research question
Research proposal
Research design strategy (type, purpose, scope, environment)
2. Formulate one problem to be solved by quantitative research
and one problem to be solved by qualitative research!
Qualitative research includes an array of interpretive
techniques which seek to describe, decode, translate, and
otherwise come to terms with the meaning, not the frequency, of
certain more or less naturally occurring phenomena in the social
world.
Qualitative research draws data from a variety of sources,
including the following:
People (individuals or groups).
Organizations or institutions.
Texts (published, including virtual ones).
Settings and environments (visual/sensory and virtual
material).
Objects, artifacts, media products (textual/visual/sensory and
virtual material).
Events and happenings (textual/visual/sensory and virtual
material).
Quantitative research attempts precise measurement of
something. In business research, quantitative methodologies
usually measure consumer behavior, knowledge, opinions, or
attitudes. Such methodologies answer questions related to how
much, how often, how many, when, and who.
3. Correlation is a linear dependency measure between two
variables. Give the range of possible values of correlation?

4. Why do we collect data only from sample of population in survey?

A sample survey is a study that obtains data from a subset of a

population, in order to estimate population attributes.A survey
can only be truly valuable when its reliable and representative for
your business. However, determining the ideal survey sample size
and population can prove tricky.
5. Give one example for the official statistics and one example for
statistics which is not official statistics (according to the new
Statistics Law of Latvia)!
Official
statistics are statistics published
by government
agencies or other public bodies such as international organizations.
They provide quantitative or qualitative information on all major
areas of citizens' lives, such as economic and social
development, living conditions, health, education, and the
environment.
'National Statistics' - these are certified as compliant with the Code
of Practice for Official Statistics.
-statistics produced by the GSS that are not 'National Statistics'
-statistics produced by Crown Bodies but not under the professional
management of the GSS
-statistics produced by non-Crown Bodies included in secondary
legislation
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development, official statistics are statistics disseminated by the
national statistical system, excepting those that are explicitly not to
be official
6. Your student ID code at ViA consists of three letters and five
digits, for example BVV16234. Compute the average, variance and
standard deviation for the five digits from your ID code!
> y<-c(1,4,5,1,6)
> var(y)
[1] 5.3
> sd(y)
[1] 2.302173
> mean(y)
[1] 3.4
