Whatisahomesteadexemption?

A homestead exemption removes part of the value of your home and reduces your property taxes by lowering its
taxable value. The homestead exemption entitles the homeowner to a $15,000 reduction in value for school tax
purposes.Counties,citiesandspecialtaxingdistrictsmayofferhomesteadexemptionsupto20%ofthetotalvalue.For
example,ifyourhomeisvaluedat$50,000andyoureceivea$15,000homesteadexemption,youwillonlypaytaxesas
ifitwereworthonly$35,000forschooltax.

CanIfilemyhomesteadexemptiononline?
YoumaybeeligibletoapplyonlinefortheHomesteadExemptionifyouareasingleoramarriedhomeownerapplying
forthecurrentcalendaryear.Ifeligible,selectthelinktoFileHomesteadExemptionOnlinefromthedetailspageof
youraccount.

WhatexemptionsareavailabletoHomeowners?
GeneralResidenceHomesteadisavailableifyouownandoccupyyourhomeasyourprincipalresidenceonJanuary1;and
youoryourspousehavenotclaimedorreceiveahomesteadexemptiononanyotherpropertyinTexasorinanotherstate.
YouarerequiredtoincludewiththeapplicationacopyofyourTexasdriverslicenseorTexasIDcard.
Age65orolderorDisabledhomeownersmaybeentitledtoanadditionalpropertytaxexemptionavailableimmediately
uponqualification.Ifyouqualifyforbothoftheseexemptions,youmustchooseoneortheother,youcannotreceiveboth
exemptions.Forschooltaxpurposes,thereisanadditional$10,000exemptiononyourhome.IfyouqualifyfortheAge65
orolderortheDisabledPersonexemption,youarealsoentitledtoaschooltaxceilingthatautomaticallysetsthelimitfor
schooltaxes. ACounty,CityorJuniorCollegemayalsoadopttograntataxlimitationorceiling.Youmay transferthe
percentage of the school tax ceiling of your former home to a new home. If the age 65 or older homeowner dies, the
survivingspousemaycontinuetoreceivetheexemptionifthesurvivingspouseisage55orolderatthetimeofdeathand
livesinandownsthehomeandappliesfortheexemption.TheDisabledPersonexemptionandschooltaxceilingwillnot
transfertothesurvivingspouse;however,theyareentitledtocontinuetheCounty,CityorJuniorCollegetaxlimitationor
ceiling(ifoffered).
100%DisabledVeteranorSurvivingSpousehomeownersmayqualifyfora100%exemptionofthetotalappraisedvalueof
theirresidencehomestead.ToqualifyyoumustbeadisabledveteranwhoreceivesfromtheUnitedStatesDepartmentof
VeteransAffairsoritssuccessor:1)100%disabilitycompensationduetoserviceconnecteddisability;and2)aratingof
100%disabledorofindividualunemployability;orifyouareasurvivingspouseofadisabledveteranwhoqualifiedforthe
100% Disabled Veteran exemption at the time of death and 1) you have not remarried since the death of the disabled
veteranand2)thepropertywasyourresidencehomesteadwhenthedisabledveterandiedandremainsyourresidence
homestead.AsurvivingspouseofamemberoftheU.S.ArmedServiceswhoiskilledinactionisalloweda100%percent
exemption on his or her residence homestead if the surviving spouse has not remarried since the death of the armed
servicemember.Aseparateapplicationisrequired.
Partially Disabled Veterans who have a serviceconnected disability rating of 10% or more, their surviving spouses, and
surviving minor children may receive an exemption which may be applied to any one property owned on January 1.
Exemptions range from a $5,000 to a $12,000 deduction from the veterans property value. An additional partial
exemptionisofferedforaresidencehomesteaddonatedtodisabledveteransbycharitableorganizationsatnocosttothe
disabledveteran(appliestoyourhomesteadonly).Theamountforbothexemptionsdependsontheserviceconnected
disabilityratingforwhichtheVeteransAdministrationbenefitsarereceived.Aseparateapplicationisrequired.

WhatisthedeadlineforfilingaHomesteadExemptionApplication?
Applications must be filed between January 1 and April 30 of the year for which you are claiming the exemption and
include all required documentation. Applications cannot be filed before the date you qualify for the exemption. Late
applicationsforaresidencehomesteadexemptionwillbeacceptediffilednolaterthan1yearafterthetaxdelinquency
dateforthetaxyearyouareclaimingtheexemption.
Exemptionapplicationsarenotacceptedbyemailorfacsimile.ThereisNOFEEtofileanexemptionapplicationortofile
