ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

ABRA News:
Several consultations are underway at the moment which will
affect our area.
DPTI (Dept Planning, Transport & Infrastucture) are
currently undertaking a public awareness and feedback
program on their plans for Main South Road upgrading
between Old Coach Road and Malpas Road, due to start later
this year. If you want to know what is happening in detail
come to our meeting on April 13 where they will be
presenting and answering questions.
City of Onkaparinga are also seeking feedback on their
Foreshore Access Plan stage 6 which is due back by April
15th. This section covers the Esplanade from Aldinga Beach
ramp to Loongana Road, Aldinga Beach.
This includes a shared use path from Magpie Road through to
Norman Road going through the SA Water reserve.
For those who would like to hear more about it and see it in
detail there is an information session planned for Saturday
April 9th from 12noon until 3pm at the Aldinga Bay
Lifesaving Club, Norman Road Aldinga Beach.
If you want to give them feedback good luck. We hope you
have more success than we all did with the stage 5 path
placement.
Several local events are in the planning stage.
The Southern Deadly Fun Run along the Esplanade at
Aldinga Beach between Snapper Point and Port Willunga is
being planned in detail.
The Southern Deadly Fun Run is a free event for all ages in Aldinga
on 1 May and 5 June. Aboriginal people and Non Aboriginal
people are invited to run or walk and join us for a community event
in the afternoon.
Registrations will be from 9.30 - 10.30
A fun warm up will be from 10.30 - 11
The walk/run will kick off at 11
BBQ and activities will be from 11.30 - 1.30
Everyone that participates will get a medal, there will be lots of
prizes on the day, special guests, yummy food and heaps of
activities. Prams, and dogs on leads are all welcome :)

Check out further details on their facebook page from which

the above quote was taken.

Aldinga On Display 2016 has finally had a date set.

It will take place on Saturday October 8th.
Arrangements have been made to carry the Council grant
over to the next financial year to allow us to organise it
properly. It will be combined with the release of a new
local services directory covering the Aldinga-Sellicks
Area which is being prepared.
This issue:
Forty pages again this month.
We are missing Stans From the Archives as he is still
not well - we wish him a speedy recovery.
You may also miss the Library column this month too.
The lady who does that is on holidays and we were a bit
slow organising someone else to do it this month.
I hope you enjoy the issue.

LOCAL DAIRY FARMER COMPETES IN BRITISH

RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP.
South Australian dairy farmer Guy Tyler and his
navigator, Steve Fisher, will be competing in the
DMACK Junior British Rally Championship in 2016.
Guy, aged 25 from Mt Compass, began racing whilst on
his Ls at the Southern Districts Car Club near his home
farm. His skills where instantly recognised and he has
gone on to compete in the South Australian Rally
Championships and the Australian Rally Championships,
recording many wins along the way.
His dream has always been to compete in the World Rally
Championship, and although he has gone through several
hard years competing in Australia with cars that have
been unreliable, he has pushed through and never given
up. His luck started to change in 2015 when he purchased
a Mitsubishi Evo V. The purchase provided immediate
results with him and his navigator, Steve Fisher, winning
all three rounds of the South Australian Rally
Championship and the state title.
Shortly after this exciting win Guy discovered a driver
vacancy posted on Facebook with the Vauxhall
Motorsport Junior Rally Team to compete in the Junior
British Rally Championship in 2016. To stand out from
the 100s of applicants he put together a short video to
highlight his capabilities. Guy was eventually shortlisted
for the position and invited to attend a test drive and an
interview with the team in England, along with 6 other
applicants. Being shortlisted for such a prestigious
position was an achievement in itself but unfortunately he
was unsuccessful due to the funds required from the
drivers to support the team.
Regardless, the team behind the Vauxhall Motorsport
Junior Rally Team, Major Motorsport, took a shine to
Guys ability to adapt, his skills and passion for the sport,
offering him an alternative, a drive in a Ford Fiesta R2.
During the interview and test drive I got to know the
other applicants really well and once I knew how good
the rallying is and how pumped up the championship is,
theres no way I could go home and keep doing the same
old stuff. I cant wait to race against my new mates and
really test my skills. Guy Tyler

This will be the first time Guy has competed in a left

hand drive R2 car but with this being his last opportunity
to compete in the DMACK Junior British Rally
Championship due to the age restrictions hes bound to
make the most of it.
"I cant wait to get into what is going to be the best car I
have ever driven so far in my career so far. There are a
whopping fourteen entries for the first round in all the
same class of car which Im sure will provide amazing
competition and will be like nothing Ive ever
experienced before" Tyler
Together the pair have raised all but $13,000 needed to
cover the cost of running in the DMACK British Junior
Rally Championship. They have created a crowdfunding
campaign hoping that the Australian public will rally
behind them.
The first round of the DMACK British Junior Rally
Championship is in Wales and begins on the 5th of
March.
Guy advocates for road safety and encourages teenagers
test their skills on the track, not on public roads. He also
wishes to be a role model and inspiration for people
everywhere to chase their dreams no matter how hard it
may be.

Since then Guy has been working tirelessly with his

navigator, Steve Fisher, from Salisbury, to ensure they
have the funds needed to make the most of the once in a
lifetime opportunity. The pair will be competing in 5
rounds of the 7 round British Rally Championship, as this
is all that counts towards points for the Junior title.
Im not the only Australian that will be competing but I
am the only South Australian and I am really stoked to be
able to represent our beautiful part of the world. You see
in the press how popular Adelaide is becoming and itll
be great to promote the area. Tyler

Aldinga Community Christmas Lunch 2015

The Aldinga Community Christmas Lunch Organizing Committee once again were able to create a very successful Christmas
Day Lunch at the Aldinga Institute, where more than 100 folk were able to come along and enjoy a traditional Christmas
Lunch, along with a visit from Santa for all the children.
People who attended enjoyed a beautiful roast dinner of ham, turkey and chicken, along with roast potatoes and vegetables.
There was also a choice of dessert, pavlova with strawberries and cream, or the more traditional Christmas fruit pudding with
custard.
Children were entertained before the lunch with an imagination playground and other activities, and after lunch, by the arrival
of Santa with a huge array of gifts for them. There was also a photo booth where families and guests could record the day. All
in all, it was a very enjoyable time for all, guests and volunteers alike.
But of course, the Committee could not have organized this event without the tremendous support of our local community
organizations, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Centacare, Aldinga Beach Childrens Centre, Communities for Children Onkaparinga, The Salvation Army, Onkaparinga Youth Services, (formerly known as V.O.L.T.), Aldinga Community Centre,
and the City of Onkaparinga.
And without the sponsorship and donations from our local business community, events such as this would simply not be
possible. So a huge thank you goes to the Bendigo Bank, Louis Place, Thomassons Food Store, Home Grain Bakery, Aldinga
Central Takeaway, Coles Supermarket, and That Cherry Guy. The Aldinga Hotel, and Aldinga Take Away also get a special
mention for coming to the rescue on Christmas Eve, all because an extension lead didn't quite fit! What would the community
have done without your help!!!
And in addition to all the support, sponsorship and donations received from our local
community organizations and businesses, there are many members of our community who
volunteered their time towards making the 2015 Community Christmas Lunch such a special
event for all. The Committee thank each and every one of you.
There is one more person for us to thank, and that is Trevor Blackwell, who came up with
this wonderful idea which has made so many Christmases a happy one, for so many members
of our community.
If you would like to help sponsor, donate towards, or volunteer your time to help bring
together the 2016 Community Christmas Lunch, the Organizing Committee would very
much welcome your contribution.

RICHARD

This month is our second section on when you need

to legally give way.
Again we acknowledge the source as RAAs SA
Motor - 2015 Spring Edition

Defies bank robbers - and lives!

Leaving behind the streets full of soldiers in his home
town Kampala - there for the 2016 elections - Richard
visited Adelaide; and when pressed, told us this story. It
happened in 1998, and there are living witnesses to it.
Standing at the bank counter with the money in his hand
for some church purchases, the sounds of shouting and
gun fire got his attention. A bunch of thugs with hand and
machine guns burst into the bank, barking out orders for
everyone to get down, and began their robbing spree.
Richard was obediently heading for the floor, when he
heard another voice say clearly "What are you doing?"
Arguing with this counter-instruction to not lie down and
no time to do it in, he again heard, "How dare you take
me, the Creator of the universe who is inside you, and lay
me down on the floor with everyone else!"
He was the only one standing. The voice said, "Pray!"
Richard prayed silently. The voice: "I can't hear you!"
Having nothing to lose - apart from his life - he threw his
hands in the air and shouted his prayer. One of the thugs
moved towards him, shooting with an AK47. At that
moment he heard the Lord say, "You won't die here
today!"; and in a vision showed Richard his future.
The vision disappeared, the thug reappeared - in shock
and awe - no more bullets; and ran from the bank. His
gang followed, leaving Richard holding his money.
Then he preached his shortest-ever sermon: "God is able
to save you all. Trust in Jesus and you will have eternal
life". And he too stormed out of the bank.
This true story is the introduction to Bishop Richard
Lutwama's forthcoming book, "Arise O man of God".

Talking Health
with Kelly Harding ND
Minerals such as zinc, iron and magnesium are
essential nutrients that your body needs in small
amounts for normal growth and development.
Magnesium is one of the most important minerals
it is required for more than 300 biochemical
reactions in the body! It helps maintain normal
muscle and nerve function, helps your cells make
energy and keeps your heart rhythm steady.
Magnesium is also required for maintaining healthy
blood sugar levels, breaking down protein,
carbohydrates and fat to make energy, regulating
calcium metabolism, helping keep your bones
strong, keeping your blood pressure low, improving
blood flow around the body, enhancing muscle
relaxation and relieving muscle cramps and spasms
and helping you cope with stress better.
Early signs of Magnesium deficiency can include;
tiredness, lethargy not having enough energy to
get through the day, muscle cramps, spasms and
muscle tension, tension headaches and migraines,
stress, nervousness and anxiety, insomnia,
premenstrual syndrome and high blood pressure.
Magnesium is found in a wide range of foods,
especially green vegetables, grains, legumes and
chocolate. However, the bad news is that it can be
difficult to get enough of this nutrient from your diet.
A recent study found 76% of men and 86% of
women were deficient in magnesium. Tea, Coffee,
alcohol, exercise, stress and lack of sleep can all
increase your need for more magnesium. If you are
stressed you actually need more magnesium than
usual to keep your muscles relaxed and your
nervous system going. The irony is that stress
causes you to secrete more magnesium and thus
deplete your stores so the lower your stores the
more stressed you become and so the cycle goes.
To break this cycle and restore your magnesium
with the correct type needed for your condition you
may need supplementation with the correct
magnesium. If you are experiencing any stress,
nervousness or anxiety, make an appointment
today. We can help you make simple diet and
lifestyle changes and recommend the right natural
medicines to help you manage your stress more
effectively and get your magnesium levels back to
optimum.

SOUTHERN ATHLETIC CLUB

Southern Athletic Club was established in 1989 and is open to
athletes of all ages and abilities, providing the means for
members to train and compete in a supportive and enjoyable
environment. SAC (also known as Southerns, or the Sharks!)
has a geographically diverse membership from O'Halloran Hill
in the north across the Southern suburbs and Fleurieu Peninsula
to Victor Harbor and everywhere in between.
Southerns athletes train and compete at a wide range of
events all year round and have some great coaches who are well
qualified and motivated to help you achieve your running goals.
The Southern AC recreational running group meets every
Friday night at various locations around the Seaford - Aldinga Willunga area under the guidance of coach and route setter
Matt Evans: "We cater for runners of all levels of experience
and speeds, having members who we've helped to complete
their first 5K right through to sub-3 hour marathon
runners. Our Friday night runs rotate through a program of
steady runs, interval sessions and hills (plenty of hills!). We
are lucky to have some awesome running routes right on our
doorstep here in the south - from the cliff paths and beaches, to
scrub and trails as well as well paved esplanades and quiet
country back-roads."
"Open to all comers, every 6 weeks we hold the
Southern Time Trials - 2K and 5K timed runs on an out-andback course from the Star of Greece, Port Willunga along the
flat and newly paved Esplanade path. This is a great
opportunity to benchmark runners against their previous times
over a measured course and see how their training is
going. And there's always a little friendly competition."
"As a qualified recreational running coach, I am able to
help by working with our runners to improve training practices
and technique. I can also provide structured training plans,
tailored around a target goal or event, taking into consideration
strengths, areas for development and time available for
running. Running can sometimes be a solitary activity, but
training regularly with a group can be fun, it can improve your
consistency and will help keep you motivated & accountable."
"We have an increasing number of races and events
around the southern area that we like to run and support (the
Espy Run, Vines to Sea Fun Run, McLaren Vale Half
Marathon, Kuitpo Forest Trail Run & Victor Harbor parkrun
are a few of our favourites). We sometimes venture further
afield to the City-Bay or Adelaide Marathon and beyond. The
Southern runners are a social bunch who enjoy to unwind after
racing with a coffee and an occasional big breakfast."
"Running in the south has never been healthier. SRG
(Southern Running Group) and McLaren Vale Running Club
both organise regular run programs in the area and it is good to
see people hooking up with different groups on different days
for the love of running. The Running Company - South
Adelaide opened up in 2015 at Port Noarlunga which is an
indicator of the demand from the local running community
down south."
"There is no cost to run with the Southern AC Friday
night group so if you are down this way and looking for some
running company we'd love for you to join us, whether that's
every week or just turning up when you can make it." Check
out our Facebook events page to see where we are meeting each
week (https://www.facebook.com/SouthernAthleticClub/
events).
As well as the recreational running group, the Sharks
also have a track and field squad who train out of Reynella East
College under head coach and former state decathlon champion

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor.
Im about to register my car again for twelve
months and between 4 and 5 thousand ks for $431.
Thats approximately ten cents per kilometer (sic)
before I start the motor petrol and service costs
are additional.
The actual registration and admin charge is
sixty six dollars. The combined additional fees are:
I.
Emergency Services Levy
$32.00
II.
Lifetime Support Fund
$87.00
III. Compulsory Third Party & GST
$246.00
The total, $365.00 is just over four years worth of
the current basic registration fee.
Its hardly to be wondered that some
desparate (sic) people drive their cars un-registered
and insured, other than those who just thumb their
noses at the rest of us and the Law.
A good pair of walkers or even a bicycle (in
my case a tri-cycle) might be a better choice.
Robbie Mack Aldinga Beach
(Thanks Robbie - The governments plan to privatise
Compulsory Third Party Insurance will certainly not
make it any cheaper Im sure. Ed)
Jason Stevens and specialist throws coach Mark
Secomb. Athletes range in age from around 11 to 50+ and
compete at Athletics SA & SA Masters Athletics meets through
the summer season, with a number of state champions amongst
them.
Southern AC also have a pro running team who train in
the Aldinga-Sellicks area and compete at the Bay Sheffield, SA
Athletics League meets and interstate under the guidance of
coach Ali Saliu. The handicap racing system can be fast,
frantic and fun with sashes and prize money on the line.
New members are always welcome at Southern AC check out www.southernac.org.au or

On Wed 16th March Aldinga Beach CFS took delivery of

a new fire-fighting appliance, Kyeema BWC13.
BW13 is a bulk water carrier, that can transport 13,000L
of water. It will be located at the Aldinga station, but is
for use throughout the Kyeema group district.

Get in early for tickets to our

Biggest Morning Tea to raise
funds for the Cancer Council!

When: Tuesday May 17, 10.30am -12 pm.

Where: Aldinga Community Centre
Cost: $7 per head. Tickets available at the
Centre. You can book a table for 6 or 10 if you like.
Tickets will sell fast!

Music provided by Tatachilla College!

The new appliance is based on a Isuzu FVZ1400 chassis,

is 6 x 4 and is fitted with a Chelsea PTO/Darley HM500
pump and was built in Australia by Moore Engineering.
The purpose of a bulk water carrier (BWC) is to transport
large volumes of water to a fire to refill fire fighting
appliances. This can save time as firefighting appliances
can be refilled closer to the fire instead of having to leave
the fireground each time they need to refill.
BW13 will service the Kyeema group district which
includes Aldinga Beach, McLaren Vale, Range Hope Forest, Sellicks Beach, Willunga and Yundi.

When we think about the Australian bush we
cannot help but think of flies. They are as big
a part of the Australian outdoors as gum trees
and kangaroos. But what do we know about
them? Why are there so many? What types
are there? What does fly blown mean? Why do
some bite? Why do they fly in circles in the
middle of a room? What is a blow fly? How
do they land an take off upside down? So
many questionsThis talk will put the microscope on the fly What do we do about them,
and why!

thoughts and reactions to their current

If you enjoy reading and would like to be
involved in reviewing a book, then this could
be a course designed for you.
