TheThing,alsoknownastheGreatSealbug,wasoneof
thefirstcovertlisteningdevices(or"bugs")tousepassive
techniquestotransmitanaudiosignal.Becauseitwas
passive,beingenergizedandactivatedbyelectromagnetic
energyfromanoutsidesource,itisconsidereda

Operatingprinciples
TheThingwasdesignedbyLonTheremin,[2]whoalsomadethetheremin.Itconsistedofatinycapacitive
membraneconnectedtoasmallquarterwavelengthantennaithadnopowersupplyoractiveelectronic
components.Thedevice,apassivecavityresonator,becameactiveonlywhenaradiosignalofthecorrect

Theremin'sdesignmadethelisteningdeviceverydifficulttodetect,becauseitwasverysmall,hadno

irradiatedremotely.Thesesamedesignfeatures,alongwiththeoverallsimplicityofthedevice,madeit
veryreliableandgaveitapotentiallyunlimitedoperationallife.
