Dear Members of the Committee for Admission Petitions:

As the premier program in (
State
), the University of (X

) College of Business undoubtedly holds

itself and, accordingly, its students to an elevated standard. Upon first inspection, my history at
U of (
X
) - namely, my GPA - appropriately places me below this threshold. However, I implore
you to take a look at the larger picture. After a suboptimal first year, I have since committed
myself to consistent academic, professional, and personal improvement. After tangible results
Im confident I am prepared to not only fulfill my goal of obtaining a Business Economics
degree, but become an active participant in the COB community and a valuable contributor to
the intellectual and economic vitality of our university and city.
My first year at U of (
X
) is glaringly disappointing. Riddled with personal and mental health
issues, I only managed to maintain a GPA of 2.19. Although this GPA is the crux of my exclusion
from the COB, I, quite ironically, believe this failure was somehow necessary to forge the
determined path I now lead. Forced to confront my problems, I sought help from appropriate
professionals and gained an acceptance of the personal responsibilities necessary to achieve
my goals.
With these new tools I flourished in my next academic endeavor. At (
College I attended after
leaving U of X
), I made the transition from being a bare minimum student to actively
participating in class discussions, regularly conversing with professors during office hours, and
not being intimidated to ask for help when I knew I required it. Over the course of 5 semesters
and 61 credit hours I earned a
3.59
GPA. Weighted with my first year at U of (

), my cumulative
academic GPA stands at
3.17
. While I understand the admissions office only considers my
previous U of (
X
) performance as measurement, I believe this comprehensive GPA provides
crucial insight to the student Ive now become.

Professionally I have also gained helpful wisdom. At a local upscale restaurant named (

), I quickly rose the ranks from Server Assistant to Server to Assistant General
Manager. Entrusted with the day-to-day operations of a multi-million dollar business, I learned
not only the skills of decision making, planning, leadership, and responsibility, but also the
value of utilizing available resources for constant improvement.
The lattermost of these newly found skills is most pertinent to our current discussion. While I
have come far since freshman year, it is my commitment to
continued
improvement on which I
wish to place the most emphasis. Bare minimum students are a dime a dozen - each
completing just enough coursework to continue going through the motions. Ive learned that
the truest academic success, however, inherently requires involvement in the COBs
community and the use of the Universitys academic resources. Long before this letter was
conceived I began researching the various academic support systems I will use to prosper.
With my gained experience and renewed commitment to academic success, coupled with
