Virginia is where DOD is really the king in the region. Indeed, Virginia was the secondbiggest recipient of defense contracts among all states in fiscal 2015, following California.
Lockheed Martin Corp. scored the highest amount of contracts both from DOD, and in
Virginia as a whole.

In Maryland, health care awards rule, thanks in part to the wealth of biotech and life
sciences headquarters stationed around the National Institutes of Health and the Food
and Drug Administration, both based in Montgomery County. And yes, the Maryland
county receiving the most in federal contracts this past year was Montgomery County,
which got more than $3.75 billion in contract dollars.

The District may be small, but it is mighty when it comes to federal funding. D.C. received
more federal spending than 22 states did last fiscal year, counting contracts, grants and
other financial assistance. By far, most of that is contracts, and the Department of Defense
led the way. But the Department of Transportation awarded more contracts in D.C. than
anywhere else in the U.S.
