Montage:
Description:

An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.

Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Date:

2/13/2016

Course Number and Section:

Comm 130 Section 2

Instructor Name:
Ben Pingel

Objective:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images

Process:

I set the background image to be the trees. I cropped the background image to 8.511. I selected the
galaxy image and placed it on the image. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted
away the hard image edges. I then put the opacity to a lower setting, like 15-30% and painted away the
image so it faded nicer. I then put a sharpen filter on the galaxy image. I used a brush with a low opacity to
soften it a little so it would blend better with the background image. I selected a quote and then added it
to the bottom of the image. I made some words and phrases stand out more with a bigger and different font
from the rest of the copy. I also added a drop shadow under some of the text so it would be easier to read

Photodesign:

Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating a color scheme into a poster layout
with an original photo.

Programs Used:

Comm 130 Section 2

Instructor Name:

Objective:

Learn basic photography skills

Choose a basic color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate those colors into the
layout
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, and then download it
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for non-destructive editing
Size and crop the image, then place it on an 8.5x11 page layout
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop
Print with full bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 from all four sides

Process:

I first decided what I wanted my design to look like. I then chose a color scheme that would look good
with my design, and decided I only wanted to use one color. I did monochromatic with the color red. I
decided I wanted to take a picture of a cupcake, so I made and frosted cupcakes to take a picture of. I set
up the cupcake inside, but right next to our big sliding doors so it got a lot of natural light. I focused on the
cupcake so the rest would be a little blurry. I took the photo using my Nikon Coolpix P520. I put the image
in Photoshop and adjusted the levels, sharpness, saturation, selective color, and vibrance and saturation. I
put my photo in an 118.5 document and started designing. I used hearts for my color swatches to match
the design better, and used the eyedropper tool to take the color straight from the color wheel. I made a
colored box for my white text to create good contrast, and then I used two different typefaces to emphasize
the word love. I used the three colors again with the little design in the top left of my design to create a
good flow with repetition

Instructor Name:

Objective:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on
business card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed
optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets,
or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Process:

I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I made one triangle, then copied it multiple
times and then arranged them in my desired shape. I changed the opacity from all of them and then added
text. Then I opened it up in Adobe InDesign. I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline
of my business card. I used the shape from my logo, and then my contact information on the front of my
business card. I made the logo a little bigger, and the font for the contact information around 10 pt font.
I made sure that no important information came any closer than 1/8 from the edges. On the back of my
business card I enlarged my logo and just used it to fill the whole card.

Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.

Process:

I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I made one triangle, then copied it multiple
times and then arranged them in my desired shape. I changed the opacity from all of them and then added
text. Then I opened it up in Adobe InDesign. I decided to make my first page a letterhead. I positioned the
placed logo in the top right corner of my letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5 away from the edges.
I then added a designed line across the top and bottom. In a text box I wrote all my contact information and
put that on the top left of the paper. I made all my contract information 8 pt font and had my name be 8 pt
so that people would notice my name first. I then added my shape logo as a watermark and had the opacity
be about 5%.

Objective:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the
audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols,
etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil,
but delete the image before submitting.)
Refine one logo with variations for color

Process:

I loved doing this project! After drafting many logos, I asked people to vote on their favorite design. I then
went and refined this design even more. I changed the text size to make it easier to read, and made it all the
same font throughout the design so it was easier to read. I also got rid of the stroke I had on the rectangles,
and changed the opacity a little.

Front Cover

Back Cover

Objective:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex color.

Process:

I set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into four sections with the concept that the
two outer sections would be the flaps of the brochure and the two middle sections would be the body
of the brochure. I chose my color scheme and then tried to only use those colors in my brochure to create
repetition. For the image of the little girl I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove
the background of the image. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge and
apply contrast to the outline of the girl. The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a softer
image that didnt look so sharp and cutout against the brochures background. I then placed the girl into
InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image. I then
created a little white space so the text didnt go right up to the picture. I created the logo in Illustrator using
the pen tool and different shapes and then I placed it into InDesign, I placed the left half on the right flap
and the right half on the left flap so that when the brochure is folded the logo would come together nicely. I
found sunglasses and split them in half, so that they would be together on the front cover.

Objective:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
(Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype (provided), html, head, title,
meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to
complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font
colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process:

I created this web page using TextWrangler. This was my first time every using and writing HTML/CSS. At
first it seemed really hard and scary, but once I got the hang of it I actually enjoyed it. Once I wrote the
website I used http://www.W3.org to verify that I wrote all the HTML correctly. This helped me catch a few
errors and was very helpful.
After I got it all ready, I attached the CSS document that was provided to my HTML. I then went onto Adobe
Photoshop and used the eye dropped tool to get the colors from my logo to use for my website. I changed
the fonts to Times New Roman and Cookie. I also went on the internet to find an image to use for my
background image. I Googled how to insert that and inserted that image after saving it to my folder. Then I
also Googled how to change the opacity and made the text area a slightly transparent.

Objective:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

Find, scan and import a high-quality image
Create a full bleed design
Choose a color-scheme and typeface that work for your message and audience
Learn to use only Word design features without using and Adobe products, including Photoshop

Process:

I scanned the image of the girl from a magazine. I then put it on Word and made it fill the page. I then
added the text. I wanted the text on the side to stand out more, so I added a red stripe on the left side, and
put white dots on it to create contrast between colors. I then created a red textbox to create contrast for the
white text. I made it a little transparent to make it more subtle also. I used the same shade of red throughout
the whole flier because it matched with the girls scarf, and created repetition. I used Microsoft Word and a
Cannon printer to complete this.

Objective:

Apply the basic design principles and use appropriate typography

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout
Retrieve image and logo from links of this page
Create a project folder with image, logo, and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:

At the beginning I started with sketching a few ideas for the flier layout. Then I chose one and used it to
design my flier in Adobe InDesign. I used alignment and made sure that all the pictures and text lined up
correctly. I only emphasized one word in the title to draw more attention, and for a focal point. I utilized
negative space also to make it easier to read. The picture, logo, and content were provided.
