Introduction
All ambulance vehicles with a Mobile Data Terminal are fitted with an electronic device that operates
to monitor and record the location, movement and status of these vehicles.
This monitoring and recording of the location, movement and status of ambulance vehicles contributes
to the effective operation of ambulance services and the safety of paramedics.
2.
Tracking surveillance is defined in the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005 (NSW) as surveillance by
means of an electronic device the primary purpose of which is to monitor or record geographical
location or movement (such as a Global Positioning System tracking device). Consequently, the
monitoring and recording of the location, movement and status of ambulance vehicles fitted with a
Mobile Data Terminal falls within this definition of tracking surveillance.
3.
The tracking surveillance of these ambulance vehicles is via the Mobile Data Terminal and Automatic
Vehicle Location devices fitted to each vehicle. The tracking surveillance of each vehicle commences
when the vehicle is switched on and continues to operate for up to four hours after the vehicle is
switched off.
4.
A sticker advising staff that ambulance vehicles are the subject of electronic tracking surveillance will
be placed in each vehicle.
5.
New Employees
A copy of this Standard Operating Procedure will be provided to all new employees before they
commence work for the Ambulance Service.
