Title

: Clinicopathological and histopathological studies on cutaneous neoplasms in

canines. ( Student name- Bahal Devika Naresh)

Conclusions:

2.

1. Occurrence of malignant cutaneous neoplasms was more in dogs as compared to

benign cutaneous neoplasms.
2. Non-descript breed of dogs was found to be more susceptible to cutaneous neoplasms
followed by cocker spaniels.
3. Occurrence of cutaneous tumors was more in males than in females and highest
occurrence was between 5 to 9 years of age.
4. C-reactive protein levels may not always be elevated in dogs affected with cutaneous
tumors.
5. The modified glasgow prognostic score does not always have clinical utility in prognosis
of cutaneous neoplasms in canines. However, it needs further research with a larger
sample size and longer study period.
6. Serial quality of life assessments are found to be a reliable tool to deduce the eventual
outcome in cutaneous neoplasms.
Title : Comparative diagnostic studies of neoplasms of skin and soft tissues from
certain species of animals with induced neoplasms in mice.
( Student name- Princy Thomas)

Conclusions:
2

Annual Report BVC 2014-15

1. The percent incidence of spontaneous tumours was much higher in canines (91.58%) as
compared to the cattle (56%). The percent incidences of malignant tumours were more in
cattle (60.71%) as compared to canine (42.53%). The incidence of epithelial and
melanotic tumours was higher in cattle (75%), whereas, the incidence of mesenchymal
tumours was higher (42.53%) in canines. The induced tumour study in mice also showed
incidence of epithelial tumours much more than other skin and soft tissue tumours. The
mammary gland tumour had the highest incidence (25.28%) in canines followed by
histiocytoma (13.79%) where as in cattle squamous cell carcinoma had the highest
incidence (60.71%) followed by tumours of fibrous tissue (21.43%). The squamous cell
carcinoma showed highest incidence in the induced tumour study in mice. The present
study using DMBA alone as an initiator and promoter was very successful to show that
DMBA can act as a very fast tumour inducing agent. The induced tumour study took 1012 weeks to develop papillomas and 14 weeks and above to develop squamous cell
carcinoma using DMBA as initiator as well as the promoter.
2. The cytological diagnosis helped in the tentative diagnosis of tumours in 71% of canines
tumours. The cytological examination of the different growth stages of squamous cell
carcinoma in induced tumour study showed that N:C ratio is the best parameter to
identify the malignancy and stage of tumour. The histopathological diagnosis was
possible in 100% of cases in the present study and was found to be the gold standard for
tumour diagnosis even for deciding the malignancy.
3. Immunoreactivity to CK 5/6 and vimentin showed similar pattern in canine, cattle and
mice. Ki-67 staining was positive in cattle and canine tumours whereas mice showed
negative reactivity to Ki-67. The pointed to the fact that vimentin immunoreactivity can be
used in the differential diagnosis of histiocytoma from other round cell tumours. The
staining with Ki-67 proved to be a very good proliferative marker but it did not correlate
with the histological. Picture of malignancy. The present study pointed to the fact that
even though Ki67 is a good proliferative marker, it cannot be considered as a marker for
malignancy.
4. Serum biomarkers like calcium, phosphorus, LDH and alkaline phosphatase did not
show any statistical significance of these serum biomarkers in tumour diagnosis. But it
helps in the tentative diagnosis of certain tumours like perianal gland adenocarcinoma,
mast cell tumour and lymphoma when compared with gross pathology and cytology of
these tumours.
5. Comet assay proved to be a useful and easy technique for detecting genotoxicity in
blood.
