71-00-00-860-817-A - Engine Operation Limits and Guidelines

(a) For EGT overtemperature limits at starting, refer to normal engine automatic start procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-818) or normal engine manual
start procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-822) .
(b) For EGT overtemperature limits at idle and higher speeds, refer to procedure after engine overtemperature (no surge or stall) (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00700-825) or procedure after engine overtemperature (with surge or stall) (Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-700-824) .
(9) Nacelle temperature limits
(a) The maximum nacelle temperature limits are shown in.
(Ref. Fig. Maximum Nacelle Temperature Limits SHEET 1)
NOTE: The nacelle temperatures shown in the figure are the maximum limits. The usual nacelle temperatures must be less than the maximum limits shown.
(b) If the nacelle temperature is more than the maximum limits shown in the figure, do an engine shutdown. Examine the engine for high temperature air leaks.
Indications of possible air leaks are as follows:
1 Heat damage or discoloration of parts adjacent to the air leak.
2 Wiring shorted, damaged, or melted.
3 Nacelle pressure relief doors are in the open position (indication of a large air leak)
4 Incorrect fire warning indications caused by a high temperature air leak on the fire warning indicator.
5 Replacement of accessories and components many times.
(10) Engine leakage limits
(Ref. Fig. Power Plant Drains SHEET 1)
(a) The maximum engine seal leakage limits during engine operation and after shutdown are shown in table 201.

NOTE: For allowed hydraulic fluid leakage at hydraulic pumps drive seal drain (Ref. AMM TASK 29-00-00-790-801) .
NOTE: 1: A one-time flyback limit of 360 cc/hour (120 drops/minute) to nearest maintenance base capable of replacing the component is permissible.
NOTE:

2: Oil leakage of 6 DPM or less is permitted and maintenance is not necessary. Oil leakage can be greater than 6 Drops Per Minute (DPM) at one
gearbox seal drain. The engine can continue in service to the next layover at a maintenance station if you obey all these conditions:
(a) Oil leakage with the engine operating cannot be more than 30 DPM.
(b) Current oil consumption (not average) is less than 0.3 qt/hr (0.28 liter/hour).
(c) The oil tank is full.

(d) Only one engine is affected.
(e) A deferred item is entered in the log to replace the affected drive seal.
(f) For the deferred period, leakage is checked prior to each departure and consumption is checked after each flight and still meet the limits given
above.
Subtask 71-00-00-710-083-A
B. Engine Operation Guidelines
(1) Oil consumption guidelines
(a) Satisfactory oil consumption is not more than 0.125 USgal (0.4732 l) hour of operation.
(b) If the engine has a slow or sudden increase in oil consumption, do an examination for external oil leaks or damage to the engine bearing compartments.
NOTE: The oil quantity displayed on the Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitoring (ECAM) Display Unit (DU) ENGINE page only shows the quantity of oil in
the oil tank. It does not show the quantity of oil in the engine. During engine operation, 5 - 12 quarts (4.73 - 11.36 liters) of oil can go from the oil
tank to the engine. This will cause the cockpit oil indication to decrease by the same quantity. After engine shutdown, the oil returns to the oil tank
and the cockpit oil indication shows an increase in oil quantity.
(2) Starter operation guideline
(a) Starter operating pressure is 30 psi (2.0684 bar) and 50 psi (3.4474 bar).
(b) Starter airflow requirements:
- Flow Coefficient (FC) is 94 lb (42.6376 kg) of air/minute at standard inlet conditions of:
- PRESSURE INLET = 14.7 psi (1.0135 bar)
- TEMPERATURE INLET = 59 degrees F = 519 degrees R
- to calculate flow at other starter inlet conditions (in pounds of air per minute), use the following:
(94) (DELTA)
W ACTUAL = ----------------------SQ. ROOT OF THETA
Where :
W
= ACTUAL FLOW IN LBS. AIR/MINUTE
P INLET
DELTA
= ----------------14.7 LBS
T INLET
THETA
= ----------------519 R
(c) The usual starter duty cycle is as follows:
1 Normal Duty Cycle:
a Two consecutive aborted start attempts each followed by an EGT cooling period. It is not necessary for the cooling period to be longer than 1 minute.
If the next start attempt is not successful, the starter must be shut down for 30 minutes for cooling.
2 Extented Duty Cycle:
a For engine motoring with fuel and ignition off, repeated cycles of 15 minutes ON followed by 1 minute off for starter cooling.
3 Re-engagement:
a The starter may be re-engaged at any engine speed.
(3) Vibration guidelines

VIB Advisory level

5.2 UNITS (16 Mils).

(b) N2 Rotor
VIB Advisory level

5.67 UNITS (1.7 IPS).
