About the
CD-ROM

his appendix provides a brief description of each of the

utilities provided on the CD-ROM in the back of this
book. We also include brief instructions for its use, and refer
you to Chapter 23 for advice on how to best make use of utility software in general. We appreciate the generosity of the
software providers who have allowed us to share these products with you, and hope that you will show your appreciation
to them by purchasing their products.
Note

We have chosen products that suit occasional use and still

provide adequate functionality within the context of this
book. This includes unregistered Shareware, evaluation versions of commercial software, as well as a suitable assortment of freeware all common practice with such book
distributions of software.
We are unable to pre-register or license the Shareware
because each package requires specific individual or corporate licensing, and we do not know who you are, yet. We
also cannot anticipate if you are a personal, single-system
user needing a one-copy license, or a multi-system commercial user requiring a multi-copy site license.
We believe it is best to allow you to make a choice of many
available products that suit your needs, and to arrange any
purchases and registrations accordingly.

Using These Programs

Most of the files on the CD-ROM are provided in ready-to-use
form. You may execute many of them directly from the
CD-ROM, but they are intended to be copied to or installed on
your system or onto special diskettes for proper operation.
These features will be noted with each programs description.

the Internet for collection by Aureate Media Corporation (pronounced: or-ee-ate).
Although a complete technical analysis is ongoing, a preliminary examination of
Aureates web site and their privacy policy statements should immediately dispel
most concerns about the companys intrinsic evilness.
That said, it is certainly the case that users should be made more aware than they
have been of the potential privacy and security implications associated with the

similar to Steves popular and powerful SpinRite program. This free program tests
