From the

Rich
Pearson,
ISRA
Executive
Director
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Once again Belgium and the world
have seen the cowardly face of
Islamic terror.! And once again, the
people of Brussels were told to go
home, lock their doors and hide in
ISRA.org
nation of Cuba.! It really did not matter, as the President's speeches are
usually followed by decisive inaction.! There were calls for the
President to come home, but he did
not.! This time I agree with the
President.! He can do nothing there as
well as he can do nothing here.
In the meantime, you and I must
prepare for our own defense, as well
as defense for friends and loved ones.
One of the things we all must do is be
sure to elect a Presidential candidate
that will make sure the Second
Amendment stays in place or we will
all become like the rabbits in
Europe.! Belgium is just a preview of
coming attractions.
If you remember Sunday March
13th,!at!5:45am on the south side of
Seattle Washington. People from the
neighborhood had gathered at the 711 for their morning coffee to discuss
the local and world events as they do
all across America.! Suddenly a man
in a ski mask burst through the door
swinging a hatchet and attacked the
store clerk knocking him to the floor.
Before "Poncho" Blacktongue could
strike again, a legally armed concealed carry permit holder drew his
.357 magnum and delivered two
shots into Blacktongue, killing him
and saving the life of the clerk.
Blacktongue had a violent criminal
record that included drug related
crimes. The entire clientele of the 711 could have been attacked and
killed had it not been for this armed
citizen.! There are many people who
don't carry all of the time, deciding
that "it's only morning coffee." They
are thinking nothing happens in the
morning, so maybe I won't carry
today.! The statistics show these
things can happen anytime, anywhere. There is a lot of merit to the
"keep calm and carry" idea.
More has come to light that teaches
a few valuable lessons.! First, the
entire episode lasted less than 15 seconds, beginning to end.! For a long
time, I have been preaching the idea
that only the victim or intended victims can stop the attack.! Even if
there had been a policeman in the
parking lot, he couldn't have reacted
in time.! Second, these people who
attack us are professional criminals.
Poncho Blacktongue, the attacker,
certainly fit that description.
Because you are up against "professionals" is why you must train, not
only to shoot accurately, but to be
ready mentally if something does
happen. The third thing is that some
April 2016
April 2016
As you are probably aware, the three-judge panel of the 4th!Court of Appeals
ruled favorably in the Kolbe v Hogan case, which is a case involving modern
semi-auto sporting rifles.! The defendants are now trying for a rehearing.
Arguments will be heard on May 11, 2016.! We need to keep an eye on that case.
Many people have asked about the Wilson v Cook County case.! There will
be a status hearing on August 5, 2016.
The Illinois House of Representatives are back in session on!April 4th, 2016.
April will emphasize the Illinois Senate.! Please keep the instructions on filing
witness slips, as we will be using them many times in the coming months.
Because of your efforts, HB3160 and HB3160 Amendment 1 were held in committee.! It is not over yet.! Thanks to all of those who called State
Representatives, emailed them, filed witness slips and contacted them in any
way. !Don't forget IGOLD on!April 6th, 2016.
I am always asked when will the .22 shortage be over.! I have to tell you it all
depends on the 2016 Presidential Election.! The death of Justice Scalia certainly complicated the situation.! The problem is the Hillary Clinton Express is
rolling out of the station with a full head of steam. !There are certainly storm
clouds on the horizon.! If Hillary wins I suggest you buy a .22 reloader.
In New York there are several more anti-gun bills being introduced in legislature.! Before I get 5000 emails from those of you who don't care about New
York, remember that what happens elsewhere will happen here.!!What happens
in other states acts as an early warning system for us.! As uncomfortable as it is,
we have to develop a defense and face the reality of the well-organized, well
financed anti-gun groups.
The newly proposed laws in New York State attack gun ownership, Second
Amendment rights and the right of self-defense in several ways.! First the law
seeks to re-define what ammunition is, which is anything that can be hurled by
a weapon - this presumably could include arrows and rocks. The state always
controls the definition of a weapon so this could be far reaching.!
Before anyone could buy ammunition from a dealer they would have to go
through a background check, just like purchasing a firearm.! That would probably include a fee for the background check and maybe even a waiting period.
If you were to buy ammunition that fit in a handgun but you have only a rifle,
13
you would still need a handgun license.! Many cartridges like 44-40, 357 magnum, 38 special and many more would fall into this category.!
Finally, if you were the owner of a registered "assault rifle" you would only
be allowed to purchase twice as many rounds as one magazine would hold, once
every 120 days.! What if you owned a 9mm AR15?! You would need to have a
handgun license, go through a background check, have a waiting period, pay
extra fees and then you could only buy 20 rounds of ammunition every 120
days.
The anti-gunners claim this is not interfering with your Second Amendment
rights.! Right.
I know you are thinking this will not hold up in court - of course not.! It is
part of the anti-gunners strategy to wear gun owners down and make them give
up.! The other strategy they have is to make us sue for every right.! They deliberately pass laws that they know are unconstitutional to run us out of money and
keep us tied up in court.! I'm sure we will see something like this in Illinois.
The next major primary is in Wisconsin, which will be on!April 5th.! At the
moment, Donald Trump is leading with 739 delegates followed be Cruz with
463. !The magic number for the Republicans is 1237. Hillary has 1214 delegates
compared to Sanders 911.! The Democrat magic number is 2383.!
Be sure to go vote for one of the Republican candidates.

grow. The breweries and distilleries paid top dollar for their grains,
and life was good here in the Heart
of Illinois.
We had 177 doctors registered
here within our city limits, along
with dentists and every kind of professional known to mankind. If
you could not find what you were
looking for here in town then we
assumed you did not need it. Would
you believe we had 100 music
teachers listed in our phone book
along with 38 newspapers? Thats
right, thirty-eight if you list all of
them, irrespective of their size. I
cannot imagine what Peoria needed
with 366 Notaries, but they were
here. We had a dozen shoeshine
parlors and 38 shoemakers in town.
Want a cigar? We had dozens of
retail stores and 44 cigar-makers in
town. Do you think Peoria could
sustain 78 gardeners or 155 poultry
breeders? Well, they did.
Within a 20-mile circle of Peoria
hosted 321 saloons, or taverns,
bars, cabarets and dives, but the
concentration of them within our
city limits was unprecedented. For
you religious folks we had well
over a 100 churches and 10,000
kids attended our fine schools.

It seems like more and more people are becoming connoisseurs of
the fungus steak known as the

greater demand for them. I got really sick on them as a child around 9
years old or so, because I pigged

My job was simple on this hunt.
All I had to do was film Spencer,

The Meandering

Who ever imagined years ago that hollering at your kid to get off his electronic
game that shoots air born gremlins out of
the air, was actually interfering with the
development of todays drone pilots. I for
one did not necessarily see any practical
application of such skill other than developing carpel tunnel syndrome, having fun
and not getting ho(mework done. That
manual dexterity has lent itself well to
drones as well as robotics in todays high
tech world.
We, as outdoor folks have certainly seen
technological advances leak from the battle
field to the hunting field. That is something that has been happening since our
ancestors stood upright and advanced from
scavengers to hunter gatherers. Not being
an anthropologist, you can probably say
this is an uninformed opinion, but I see

the outdoors.
Ill tell you right now; I
am a traditionalist when it
comes to our outdoor
sports.
Traditional, at
least in the view
that before we apply
todays technology we should learn yesterdays skill sets. I did an article a
number of years ago that stressed learning the basic outdoor skills before becoming dependent on brainless guidance developed by some MIT egghead. Before you
read your GPS can you read a compass?
Before you drive an ATV ten miles into a
forest, can you walk that far? Before you
pick your water depth on a screen, do you
know how to sound for a river bed in a
lake?
At any time our new doodads rely on
electricity or some sort of power other than
our brain. In the above mentioned article
I mentioned a friend whose four-wheeler
shot craps on him deep in the woods and
provided him with a very scary few hours
trying to reconnect with civilization. I feel
very strongly that all you Dads out there
teach the up and coming generation what
to do when technology fails them. It could
save their life.
Reenter drones. How cool is the stuff
were seeing in videos today, with Go Pro
cameras strapped to an eagle talon, a porpoise fin or some nit-wits chest that decides
to jump off a cliff wearing a suit that lets

I recently wrote about my quest to
Oklahoma and some very interesting
and fun coyote hunting thanks to an old
friend who runs the Oklahoma Boar
Hunting Ranch on P-H Farms there. I
was hunting coyotes on several ranches, most of which had cattle and unfortunately they also had some freerange hogs. These aggravating critters
simply devastate the pasture and the
hay fields. This is much to the dismay
of the ranchers and farmers. The good
part of this is that it makes hunters
much more welcome on their proper-

by Dave Shadow
Good news! Ive talked with several people during the past weeks
of nasty winter weather that indicated they really wanted to get in
some meaningful practice with
their handguns, but could not comfortably do so. Well folks, you no
longer have an excuse. Let the
snow fly and the wind blow and
you can still shoot in a comfortable
environmentally controlled environment.
Because of the many extreme violence acts of late, lots of folks have
recently acquired their FOID cards
and concealed-carry permits but
many have not really got comfortable with their new firearms. Even

Tactics cross over well, and weve used lures
and methods for everything from muskies to
mackerel, snook to stripers, to catch bass. I
admit I prefer big game over smaller species, and,
that outside of bass fishing, Im far more likely to
chase animals like pike or marlin, instead of little
guys like panfish. But, like I encourage all the
staff guides working for me, and all my lure company Pro Staffers, I do a little of everything, and
feel this makes us better anglers, able to zig when
everyone else zags. What is the typical outcome?
Thats simple, the result that we all strive for,
more and bigger bass into our boats.

Crawfish are brightly colored with
their new and very soft shells and are
a particular favorite of most all

know who the players are
Well focus on the lure choices for
searching out and finding those big,
hungry females. My first choice if
you dont already know, is the spinnerbait. This lure as I have explained
before is probably my best search
lure for covering lots of water, and it
doesnt hurt that it strongly resembles
a fleeing or wounded baitfish. This

TACTICS TO LOCATE
BASS IN APRIL
April got here way too fast but what a
great month to go fishing. My dad used to
say when the Dogwoods bloom the bass
bite and I have to agree with him. Bass
fishing this month, especially in the southern half of United States seem to go on
feeding frenzies like no other time of the
year. It also appears that just about any
tactic can work for you. One other thing I
really love is you can just about depend on
the lakes to be at full pool with plenty of
cover in the water. Another deal I also really like is target fishing.
If you are lucky to have a lake near you
like Kerr lake, Kentucky Lake, Toledo
Bend etc. you are in buck brush, willow
trees, and lay down heaven. I employ two
tactics when fishing these covers, one a
spinning rod if the bass are relating to the
outside cover and second, a flipping stick if
they are tight in the brush. My favorite
baits with the spinning rod are Zooms
Trick worm, lizard, and Brush Hog. When
I am basic plastic fishing, Im using a 7
medium/heavy Johnny Morris Carbon
Lite
rod,
J o h n n y
Morris 40 reel,
10 lbs. Bass
Pro Shops
Excel
or
Fluorocarbon
line, with a
light weight
1/16 oz. to 1/8
oz. and a 2/0
hook. If the
fish are aggressive I simply cast to the edges and let my
Zoom bait go to the bottom and move
four times slowly, if no bite reel in and
repeat. Dont waste time working all the
way back to the boat because we are going
for the aggressive bite and besides if the
bait is in 6 foot or less the bass will have it
85% of the time before it ever hits bottom.
If the bass are tight in the cover I will
flip with a Johnny Morris 76 Carbon
Lite rod and reel, with 20 to 25 lbs test
Excel, a Hookset lures Fumble Bug jig
head (you need to try this if you are a flipper) and a Zoom lizard, Brush Hog, or ZCraw. I like to use a 3 to 5/0 heavier flipping style hook and the lightest Bass Pro
Shops tungsten weight I can get by with,
which will allow the bait to fall straight
down. Now this is simple fishing, just get
your bait into the cover and work slowly
up and down. You also need to flip the
cover real well.
When you are fishing either of these
tactics and get bit, pay close attention to

Whether you want to follow morels
north with spring, or wait until they
reach your location, this is a great
way to be in the know.
Imprinting
One way to prepare for the season
is to look at photos of morels daily.
Imprinting the morel pattern in your
brain will help spot them quickly and
more often. Put a photo on your
refrigerator. Stick one at your desk or
other high visibility area. Find
images online and print the best photos.
When to Look
Wait for natures signs of spring
before searching for morels: oak
leaves the size of squirrel ears; lilacs
budding and ready to flower; mayapple leaves opened up like umbrellas;
and flowering trilliums, bloodroot,
trout lily, Virginia bluebells, dandelion, spring beauty and columbine.

Where to Look
Dead elms are often morel magnets. Dutch elm disease hit all 99
Iowa counties in the 1950s, killing
approximately 95 percent of urban
elms. Remaining elms produce a
prodigious amount of winged seeds
every spring in a battle to survive,
and dying and dead elms are still
encountered in the woods.

Morels have been found in cider processing piles. Old peach orchards
may be worth exploring as well.
Morels can also be found near ash
trees
And the black ash of Iowa swamps,
and the green and white ash of floodplains, valleys, hillsides and uplands.
With the emergence of the destructive
and exotic emerald ash borer, we can
expect devastation similar to Dutch
elm disease, only faster once it takes
hold. Ash borers loosen the bark on
the tree, which quickly falls off as the
tree dies. If my loss of the symbiotic relationship theory is correct, this
should boost the number of morels
seen in years to come, so ensure you
learn how to identify ash trees.
Black locust groves should also not
be overlooked
Dont bypass white pine plantations. Morels also grow there. Not to
confuse the issue, but morels have
been found near aspen groves, wild
black cherry trees, shagbark hickories
and oaks, in river and stream bottoms
with cottonwood and silver maple
and sycamore, near wild grape vines
and even beneath Osage orange
(hedge ball) trees. They are also
found in disturbed areas with limestone and shale.
When times are dry, head downhill
Check mossy ground, search the
base of slopes and thoroughly investigate areas with heavy to moderate
ground cover. It is much harder to see
morels when ground cover is abundant, but such cover can indicate rich,
moist soil that can be productive for
mushroom hunters.

Shotgun choke alteration and choke tube installation might seem to be a relatively
straightforward job since many gunsmiths offer such work. Specialty tooling can rework a
barrel to accept a particular choke tube type that is expected to be compatible with the internal bore size and leave a safe remainder of barrel wall thickness. Some tooling designs are
represented as an all-purpose set that may not require much more than a vise to affix the
barrel and a hand-rotated brace (remember the carpenter brace & bit?) to supply the rotary
cutting motion. One enterprising fellow stated he used a variable-speed electric hand drill,
so he considered himself a step above crude hand power. The problem with some all-in-one
type tools is that if anything at all is less than perfect, from size compatibility to alignment
to proper measurement, the end result may be full of anguish and peril. Some unfortunate
examples are shown for your enlightenment.

in for exam after he had used up all the scope adjustment, in other words, he couldnt ignore
the problem any longer. These threads prominently show because the metal stretched and
is now bulging outward on this side, and when might that material have made a sudden
parting is the question to ponder.
This muzzle view shows an off-center hole brought about by someone requesting the
choke to be opened. Note the variance in muzzle wall thickness at the opposing arrow ends,
maybe twice the thickness at one side as the other. The interior muzzle view at the right has
a chromed shiny section for about 20% of the circumference at the muzzle bracketed by the
grey arc, and then tapers inward toward the bore proper. This barrel has a fully chromed
interior, but someone unaware of the hard lining forced a tool through the choke. That
shiny section is the original choke height and contour since the chrome is still present. The
force exerted to cram that tool and cut through all but one side of that chrome must have
been a monumental exercise that stretches credulity and the tool and choke was definitely
ruined.
Spotting a barrel bulge is never fun,
but it still beats a rupture. This outside
view is just starting a split at the rib edge
by the red bracket, and the interior has
an obvious peel in progress (tiny light tip
enters at top left of the bottom left
image). The peel section is at the lower
edge of the deeper interior view shown,
and shadow shows below from the light
being present. That rough section in the
lower right image is evidence of the use
of the infamous all-in-one cutter. The
cutter section that is to remove the original fixed choke area of a barrel has a particular fixed diameter. When the barrel
bore is different than that chosen cutter
57
diameter, it either cuts out LESS than the complete choke, or (like here) MORE than the
complete choke. Someone that buys these miracle tools may represent themselves as a
qualified choke installer, the same way someone that owns a box of wrenches qualifies as a
mechanic.
Lack of lube, rust
your tube! That
bulge inside the
choke tube indicated
by the red arrow is a
rust upheaval like
bubbled paint on a
fender. The middle image stainless steel chokes had to be split to be removed from the rusted holes and save the barrels from the hacksaw. The other choke in the last image was
machined to a skin, and then pulled from the hole in pieces. The thread remainder came
out like a foot-long coil of sharp metal.
These examples
can help one realize
how a choke might
be almost perfectly
installed, but one
defective measurement could spell
DISASTER. The
tube in the first image is tight in the hole and you would think bottomed, but then why
does the pick point fit into a gap? Threads not tapped deeply enough or other misfit are the
twin choices present. The second hole shows evidence that the tap was run in TOO
DEEPLY, so you can see the chamfer cut the 2 marks showing a bevel/notch mark, those
black arc lines with the white arrows pointing to the end or edge of the flute chamfer cut.
If that tap was run in a little deeper, there wouldnt be any remaining seat edge for the tube,
and the tube edge could be exposed enough to peel and split like the previous example
shown.
These images were not intended to scare anyone off of choke tube or barrel work, but to
make clear that there is a level of expertise necessary to ensure that the well-being of an end
user or spectator is not imperiled by unfortunate or inadvertent errors.

CHANGED BAITS & GAME
PLANS TO GET BITES
MINNETONKA, Minn. In rapidly changing conditions, it helps to keep an open mind and an open
tackle box full of different baits. Thats a lesson
Rapala pros were reminded of last week in the
2016 Bassmaster Classic, held on a muddy Grand
Lake O The Cherokees that was clearing slowly
while rapidly warming.
On the first day of competition I caught five
keepers on five different baits, said five-time
Bassmaster Classic contender Ott DeFoe.
Those five baits were a Terminator
Spinnerbait, a #5 and #6 Rapala Shad Rap, a
Rapala DT-6 and a Terminator Pro Series Jig.
Because Grand Lakes lower end traditionally

Similar to the
original Shadow Rap, released at last years
Classic, the Shadow Rap Shad is taller in profile
than its predecessor, but not as long. And, rather
than slowly sinking on the pause as an original Shadow Rap does a Shadow Rap Shad
slowly rises when stopped, slightly wobbling and
perfectly mimicking an injured shad.
With the action its got, man I just totally
expect this thing to be a big hit there at Grand
Lake this year, DeFoe said in a video recorded

McDonough County 4-H Shooting Sports offers
shooting disciplines including Archery, Rifle (air and

Youth aged 8-18 can participate in Archery and Air

Each discipline is taught by an adult National or

The size
of your dog
s h o u l d
determine
the size of the kennel. The larger the dog, the more kennel
space should be allotted.
Retrievers that are confined to
too-small areas will do everything in their power to get out,
including trying to jump over or
dig under the kennel fence.
Make sure the dog has room to
walk around; a larger kennel
allows for more exercise. In
terms of the doghouse within
the kennel, build it big enough
that the dog can stand up and
turn around, but don't make it
excessively large, because the
structure will be harder to keep
warm in the winter.
Think in advance about the
best place to build a kennel. As
with all real estatelarge and
smallit's all about location.
Resist the temptation to install
a stake inside the kennel run.
Some dog owners do this to prevent the dog from trying to
escape
the
kennel.
Unfortunately, when tethered to
a stake, dogs have died after
becoming
hung up on
the fence. If
you are conc e r n e d
about your
dog going
over
the
f e n c e ,
install
a
roof system
of
some
sort. A tarp stretched tautly
across the top of the kennel will
sometimes be all that's required.
Consider drainage. The dog's
house should be elevated an
inch or two above the kennel
floor. This keeps the dog drier
and makes it easier for you to
hose out the waste and keep the
kennel clean. The floor, assuming it amounts to a roughly finished (as opposed to smooth)
concrete pad, should be disinfected on a regular basis.
Remove the dog before doing
this as the chemicals may be
caustic.
Untreated lumber (exterior
grade plywood) may be the best
choice for kennel construction.
While it may not last as long as
treated lumber, the chemicals in
treated wood can be toxic if
your dog decides to chew on its
house. Make sure the roof is
pitched, as opposed to flat, to
ensure rain and snow will easily
run off. Chain-link fencing is
likely the most popular method

Earlier this year, ATF rule 41F was entered into the Federal Register, which significantly
changes the transfer of items regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA) and, perhaps
most importantly, several things regarding suppressors.
Rule 41F, which will take effect July 13, is determined to shake things up, but its not all
bad news. In fact, one of the most significant changes to celebrate with the new rule is the
removal of the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) sign-off on NFA applications.
Previously, applicants for NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles, fully automatic
firearms, etc.) were required to obtain a certification from a CLEO. This, many gun owners and advocates argued, allowed officials to arbitrarily deny Americans from owning NFA
items.
Now, the new rule only mandates applicants to notify CLEOs instead.
For the first time in 82 years, local law enforcement will no longer have de facto veto
power over any NFA applications, said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director
of the American Suppressor Association. While their inclusion in the process made sense
in 1934, before background checks, or even computers existed, the removal of this antiquated measure from the NFA process is a major victory for the suppressor and NFA communities.
Rule 41F is not all rainbows and cherries, however; it does include several frustrating
changes that could impact you. For example, the ATF itself estimates that NFA wait times
could double once the rule change goes into effect. This is due mostly to the rule change
around fingerprinting for trusts and corporations. Yes, two fingerprint cards, as well as a
passport photo of each person listed on a trust, are going to be required going forward after
July 13, 2016 each time you want to purchase a NFA item under the Trust.
You can still get around this slowdown if you buy a silencer under an NFA Trust before
July 13, 2016. All pending applications submitted before the rule change will be grandfathered under current rules. So if you want to do it the easy way, I suggest you buy a $129
SilencerCo Easy Trust and begin the purchasing process now. The ATF processes thousands
of suppressor orders under the SilencerCo Easy Trust monthly and, because of this, orders
seem to process faster than those using larger/custom trust documents. Click here for the
Easy Trust.
Are trusts no longer relevant after July 13th? No, trusts are still advantageous for a number of legal reasons even after 41F goes into effect. They include:
People listed on a trust can be in possession of the items listed in the trust, otherwise its
against the law
May help protect against future regulatory restrictions
Provides clear lines of inheritance for all the items on the trust
Are you new to suppressors and not sure which one to get? Or perhaps you want a suppressor to fit all your firearms? The hottest suppressor on the market that is interchangeable
from 9mm all the way up to .45-70 GOV is the SilencerCo Hybrid. You can watch it in
action below or learn more here.

DUCK
HUNTING
WITH A DOG
By Colin
Have you ever had nothing to do on
a weekend? If you have you should
try duck hunting. Have you ever gone
duck hunting? If you havent you
should read this to see how to do it.
Hunting has dated back to two million years ago. So do you want to
continue this tradition? Then read
this paper. There are three reasons
why you should hunt one so you can
get fresh meat for your family, two its
fun, and three, for conservation. Here
are the steps and things you will need
to duck hunt with a dog.
Step 1: The night before your hunt,
make sure all your supplies are ready,
and all your duck decoys that you are
taking with you have weights on
them, so they dont float away. These
are the things you will need. You will
need a car, a case with a shotgun your
size in it , a box of shotgun shells, a
few dozen duck decoys in a bag
(male and female and different
species), a

to drink in the blind.
Step 2: Wake up at 3 o'clock and
get all your clothes on except for
your coat and waders. Then put your
coat and waders in the car. After that
come back in and eat some breakfast.
Next put your boots on. Then put

Step 3:

your vehicle, get out
and take the

sled out of your vehicles trunk and
put them on your sled. Next take your

and change into your waders. Then
put your boots in your vehicle. After
that pull your sled to the blind with
your things on it.
Step 4: Once you get to the blind,
put your gun, shotgun shells, hunting

Mucho Grande yelled our native guide as a fish exploded on Dans surface lure. So violent was the strike that it left
him frozen, unable to set the hook. That fault seemed
insignificant as the force of the strike embedded the lures
treble hook into its jaws. Two more times Dans silver fish
exploded above surface, then as if the leaps had drained it
of all its energy, it came stubbornly to boat.
Our guide Roberto promptly brought the tiger-toothed
fish on board by its tail and proclaimed it to be a payara.
Holding it by its tail Roberto announced that payara were
not good eating and should be returned to the shoreline
instead of the water. Why, I inquired? He explained that
this species was only a predator that wounded more good
eating fish than it should. Passing Dans prize to him so
that I could photograph the two of them I believe I heard
the words Diablo Pesca or Devil Fish mentioned to
Steve Childress, our camera man for this trip to the
Cinaruco River in southern Venezuela.
The Ol River Rat, Dan Gapen, Sr. and I had fished
Venezuela twice before, once on the border of Brazil and
another time on the Ventuari River, a tributary of the
Orinoco River along the south central part of the country.
During those trips wed gained a fascination for the monster catfish these South America Rivers have to offer. This
trip wed concentrated on other species, such as Peacock
Bass, El Tigre Catfish and many of the surface-striking fish
available to anglers.
The Payara, our first fish of the trip was a grand surprise.
If you are wondering why, let me tell you. A Payara has
huge lower jaw saber-like teeth which, when its mouth is
closed, recess deep into its upper jaw. In the case of Dans
12-pounder they extended nearly 4 inches above its lower
jaw, then receding into the upper jaw where tube-like holes
accept them. The upper jaw has sword-like teeth, about
half the length of the lower ones, which perform a similar
act in the lower jaw. Looking at these the viewer can only
imagine the destruction that could be done to any fish the
Payara might decide to attack.
It had been decided after our previous trip that Dan
would design a surface lure to entice these surface feeders

in the rivers of South America. Both
of us had noted Peacock Bass and
others attempting to strike the waterwalking lizards of Venezuela. Most
of these lizards were green, tan and
yellow in appearance. They literally
walked across the water, as their
broad oversized back feet slapped
surface, never sinking more than half
an inch. As they ran, a sputtering
trail of spray followed them.
Eventually that summer the Ol River
Rat came up with a lure he called a

American lizard color he painted the

Think Wild Hogs Dont Kill Deer? Think Again by Daniel Xu, OutdoorHub.com
For states with a wild hog problem, this picture is indicative of just how bad that problem is. While feral pigs are more known for their
destructive sprees when it comes to agriculture or the environment, it should be noted that hogs will also compete and even prey on native
species. In fact, there are very few things that the swine will not eat. This picture, which was shared by LouisianaBowhunter.com on
theirFacebook page, shows a large hog carrying a dead whitetail fawn. The picture is believed to have been taken in Louisiana, which currently has wild pig population of well over half a million.
Just how badly are pigs impacting the deer population? Consider the fact that for the past few years, hunters in Louisiana have taken more
hogs than they did deer. In 2015, sportsmen and women harvested 300,000 feral pigs, but only 139,000 deer.
Hogs continue to be a primary concern, stated the LDWFin itsannual deer reportin 2014. Research shows that deer and hogs do not
mix and that deer can be displaced by hogs. Research has shown that deer detection rates can be up to 49% less where hogs occur. Hog populations affect deer numbers through direct competition for food resources and fawn predation. Hogs carry infectious diseases such as
Leptospirosis, brucellosis, and pseudo-rabies.
The impact that hogs have in deer are not only noticeable, butverysignificant. When the pigs are not actively preying on deer, they compete with them for food and space while at the same time, they also degrade their habitat. All around, hogs are having a greater impact on
deer than experts previously expected.
Unlike deer, hogs are highly adaptable and
can also breed very quickly. If you ever wondered just how feral pigs have managed to
become such a nuisance, keep in mind that a
single sow can produce an average of 12
piglets every year. At this rate, biologists propose that 75 percent of the total swine population must be harvested every year to maintain a stable number of pigs.
That is a lot of bacon.

Wetland enhancement
in Midwest could help
reduce catastrophic
floods of the future
According to a new study from Oregon
State University, restoration of wetlands
in the Midwest has the potential to significantly reduce peak river flows during
floods - not only now, but also in the
future if heavy rains continue to increase
in intensity.
Wetland restoration could also provide
a small step toward a hydrologic regime
in this region that more closely resembles
its historic nature, before roads and cities
were constructed, forests were lost, and
millions of acres tile-drained to increase
agricultural production.
An evaluation of potential wetlands in
one watershed in central Indiana found
that if just 1.5 percent of the land were
used for wetlands, the peak flow of the
overall watershed could be reduced by up
to 17.5 percent. Also of importance,
researchers said, is that expansion of wetlands appears to provide significant benefits across a wide range of possible climate
scenarios.
The study was published in Ecological

On Nov. 5, 1976, Missouri angler Rick Clunn claimed his first B.A.S.S.
victory in the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Guntersville. It was his first
giant step toward becoming a true legend in the sport of professional fishing.
On Sun. March 20 he won for the 15th time on the B.A.S.S. circuit and
in many ways, this step might have gone even further toward cementing his
legacy.
Clunn, who will turn 70 in July, caught 5-bass that weighed 19 lbs. during Sundays championship round and won the Bassmaster Elite at St.
Johns River presented by Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels easily with a 4-day
weight of 81-15. The win was bolstered by a monumental catch of 31-7

I was certainly feeling some pressure after having such a big weight
yesterday, said Clunn, who finished 4 pounds ahead of second-place finisher Greg Hackney (77-15).

Peoria was a big railroad town and the city directory showed
fourteen companies had their offices here in Peoria. As kids
we spent a lot of time hoping those slow moving freights, and
I especially liked the caboose. Every time I hear the mournful sound of that train whistle passing through Radnor
Township out by Kellogg Golf Course I get the urge to do it
all over again. Of course what we were doing was forbidden,
dangerous and downright stupid, but we did it anyway.
Bruce and I went out to Illinois Central College to check out the Peoria Train Fair being hosted by River City Model
Railroad Club of Pekin, Illinois and the Illinois Valley Model Railroad Club. Of course the best part of something like this
is watching the kids and Bruce is an expert at catching those great expressions of a little kid with his dad mesmerized by
moving model trains. There was a large crowd of visitors and along with the trains were a ton of merchandise booths and
a lot of great things to look at. Kids got to actually operate the trains and I heard a lot of great questions being asked of the
Engineers.
Sadly like almost every club in this area members are hard to come by and these clubs are looking for new members.
They put on two train fairs a year and if you and your little kids want something to do, this might2be just what you are looking for. Believe me todays clubs are not like you remember back in the day. Today they talk about digital command control. These train club members have a real passion for what they do and would welcome you. Look em up on your computer and go over and take a look. They even have locomotive horns and whistles that sound like they did back in the
1940s.

much information as you can about the suspect/s (i.e. approximate age, sex, height,
race, weight,) and about the vehicle (make,

you can add distinguishing features about
the person or vehicle such as: suspect has a

PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP
In MN TIP is a member driven organization and is an offshoot of the crimestopper
program of the 70s and 80s. Currently
MN has nearly 400 TIP members who are
recruited through local banquets and
fundraisers. The $25 supportive level
gives the individual a one- year membership.
Most recently, program directors have
begun attending trade shows and expos to
actively recruit members and to make the
public aware of the programs mission of
encouraging citizens to call in criminal
behavior to deter a would-be violator.
The Buck Stop was recently introduced
to create awareness, seek membership and
collect donations for TIP. A stand displaying a shoulder mounted buck and a donation box is being placed in sporting goods
stores and events with high traffic allowing
individuals the opportunity to give a buck
to TIP.
STATE WIDE PROGRAMS
Most states have an anti-poaching program. Some are called Turn in Poachers
(TIP) like MN, while other are titled
Operation Game Thief (OGT). Target
Illinois Poachers is how the program is titled
in Illinois. These programs vary with some
being tax based and run by the DNR while

EXPERIENCE WHAT
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

by Jason Houser
What will you
do for vacation
this
summer?
There are many
opportunities not
all that far from
your home. Do
not spend hundreds, or even thousands of dollars traveling to far off places. Or taking days off of
work that will lessen your paycheck.
Weekend adventures are inexpensive
when compared to other trips, and often

will save money in travel costs and missed

Southern Illinois has a lot of attractions
thanks to the Shawnee National Forest.
One of my favorite places to visit is Cavein-Rock, Illinois, population 310.

THE PROS AND CONS OF GUTTER GUARDS
Clogged gutters can cause many
problems, so every year they have to
be cleaned. Of course, the problem is
that the cleaning usually requires a tall
ladder and a good sense of balance. To
avoid an unfortunate accident followed by a trip to the emergency room,
some people turn to the help of gutter
guards. There are many different types
of gutter guards, each with its own set
of pros and cons. Some models can be
expensive, so consider your gutter sit-
And Auctions!
The Facts
Gutter guards are designed to keep
leaves and debris from collecting in
your roof's gutters. There are many
types of gutter guards, but the basic
idea behind all of them is to block
leaves and debris while allowing rainwater to flow unimpeded. If rainwater
is not able to flow freely, it could pool,
possibly causing damage to your gutters and even the roof itself. So it is
important to be wary of any gutter
guard that may eventually become
clogged.
Gutter Screens
Gutter screens are gutter guards that
use a mesh cover to keep leaves from
entering the water channel. Gutter
screens come in a variety of models
with holes of different sizes to accommodate the particular foliage of your
region. For instance, if you have fir
trees, you may want a screen that will
stop pine needles. Con: Gutter screens
can become blocked as leaves layer
themselves on top of the screen. Pro:
Cleaning them is fairly easy because
the leaves can be simply brushed or

I was getting gear ready for my trip to Chicago
where I would be doing seminars at the Bass Pro
Shops Spring Classic the following weekend
when my phone beeped announcing a text message was received. It was Rick Hamm, owner
and operator of Show Me Your Snows extreme
snow goose hunting, announcing he was covered
up with thousands of snow geese and that I needed to get my a.. down to Havana.
I had been watching the social media pages
telling everybody there were not that many
geese around here and the Havana boys were
seeing the same 4 or 5 thousand geese just jumping fields around the area, the information was
false and that it was just too early for that size of
a migration. I replied and said, Are you joking? It was met with another text from Rick
that went something like this. Dammit
#%^&*(&^%$^&& Dan, $&*()&^%#$^&^ get
ur a.. down here and #&*(&^%%^ see for yourself!
Now Rick is known to be, lets say, colorful at
times. He said he had a hole open the next day. I
was to meet him at the Hill at daybreak. I really
did not have the time to be chasing geese this
early in February, but I screwed the extension
tube on the Benelli and tossed a case of shells in
the truck.
Five a.m. found me in my Tundra headed south
where I met Randy, one of Ricks guides. I said,
how the hell ya doing Randy. as I threw my
gun, shells and camera gear in his truck for the
long drive past thousands of Hard Core decoys
to the pit where Ricky was already busy moving
speakers and working on a few of the new clone
snow goose flyers. I said, how the hell ya been
you old #$^&^, to Rick which was imminently
met by a hardy, thats your hole by me, and a
GET YOURE A.. IN IT.
There were already 6 or 7 guys in the pit. I
heard a voice yell out, I aint sharing this pit
with no $%^&&^%% Muskie fisherman. Now
who the hell could that be, I thought to myself?
I could see the line of heads sticking out of the
pit, but had no idea who had said it. I lowered
my gear into the pit and hopped in. I was immediately greeted by 4 or 5 of the guys. How the
hell ya doing Danny? Surprised, I said,
good. Still not able to match the voice with a
face. A couple seconds later with the aid of a little light from my head lamp, it hit me. It was the
clan of snow goose hunters I call the Shelbyville
107
Boys. They are as hard core as they come, and these boys can shoot. I spent
a day last year with them and watched them rain goose after goose out of
flocks of working birds. Needless to say, this is gonna be a good day
because these guys follow the migration like bears on spawning salmon.
The first glimpse of daylight showed the skies were full of snow geese
moving in every direction of the compass, high, low, east, west. See, I told
you, Rick said as he turned up the volume on the speakers. The leading
edge of the migration was here, and the old adults were by no means easy
to kill, but, as usual, Hamburger Hill lived up to its reputation and fooled
over 35 or 40 that day.
The next couple of days had me back on the hill shooting at the old adults
that were to say the least smart. We were knocking them down a couple at

to the Flyers and grabbing another bird

behind the counter said he just had a couple fellas from Pekin, Illinois here a few
moments ago getting their license. Good. The rest of the party had also made it down.
I arrived back at the motel just in time to see the caravan of trailers manned by Johns
guides coming in from the fields. Watching the seasoned veterans unload, clean the
birds, and carry back their gear to the room is a sight. Well-oiled machines is all I can
say.
I found Kenny with his hands full pulling the breasts from 20 or 30 birds. He said
there were a fair amount of birds here but it would be a matter of the weather cooperating on how we would do as they were calling for heavy rain and cool temps. I
unpacked my waders just in case it was raining and carried them to the room with the
rest of my gear. A few minutes later, I was sitting with John Neu, grabbing a new
sweatshirt and discussing how he did during the fall duck and goose season. John
resides in South Dakota and runs fall and spring hunts there as well. A couple doors
down, Kenny was making plans and start times with the other guys in his party for the
following morning. 5:45 Vinovich, he yelled. Dont be late and wear your waders.
The fields are wet, and its probably gonna rain. Yes, sir, I replied. With a wave, I
headed to my room for a much need sandwich and a couple hours of sleep.
On day 8, the combination of the alarm on my phone and my alarm clock screaming almost gave me a heart attack, as I launched my tired old a out of bed truly not
knowing where the hell I was and frankly a little spooked as nothing looked familiar.
Freaking out, I finally found the light switch and with the warm glow of the light, I saw my
guns propped up against the wall. Then it hit me. Hell yeah, I am in Missouri.
I quickly turned on the TV for the weather report. It did not look good. Heavy rain was
bearing down on the whole state and would be there shortly after sunrise. I threw my gear in
the truck and looked for our guides truck and trailer. It was not easy to find as the other
clients were loading their gear and searching for their guides. After a few minutes, we all

Hamm telling me they had another push of snows move in and the thousands of birds in the
area had now doubled. He had a hole open for me in the morning.
It was almost day 10. I looked at the time on the dash and quickly tried to
do the math in my head. If my calculations were even close, I would be home in
two and a half hours. I have time for a shower, change out my nasty wet clothes
for fresh ones, clean my gun, and toss another 4 boxes of shells in the truck.
Somewhere in between thinking about loading shells in the truck, my low fuel
signal beeped on the dash. I replied, Sure Rick, what time do you want me

approaching hordes of snow geese. My body was merely going thru the
motions, updownreload...repeat. The day was about average, 30 to 40
geese on the ground each day.

The old adults that dominated the northern migration this year were
smart. I mean 10 to 15 years smart. They had a mission to get to the northern breeding grounds. Millions were gonna make it back. I had hunted
with 2 of the best operations in the Midwest over the last 2 weeks. Rick and
John run different operations and different techniques. Both were enjoyable and highly effective in putting down numbers of the smart white ones.
I managed to make it one more day with Rick before my body gave out
and I took a day off. Over one thousand miles, a case and a half of shells,
one bum knee, one bruised shoulder, 2 swollen wrists and a months worth
of ringing ears. I had over 50 messages to return from clients asking where
the hell I had been and asking if the ice was off the lakes yet. I laughed as
I spent the next day at home returning calls and e-mails. Each one had the
same starting reply, sorry it took so long to get back with you but my phone
as well as the internet had been down because I had been SNOWED IN!!
I have hunted with both John Neu at Neu Outdoors and Rick Hamm of
Show Me Your Snows Outdoors each spring for the last couple of years.
My hat goes off to both operations. The quality of the hunts, guides and
sheer numbers of geese downed are a testament to their abilities to put
clients on geese each and every day. I assure you, if they had control over
the weather, only a hand full of geese would make it back to the Tundra
each spring! To book the hunt of a lifetime, you can contact!John Neu at:

Fishing
submerged
brush along a
chunk rip rap
shore with a
medium diving
crankbait
helped take
this nice
size bass.
Rip rap is sometimes not seen above the water, as with this
grass covered dam, were a white Blitz Finesse Jig with a
Manns Auger Frog trailer produced several nice bass
that were hanging along moss cover.
April 2016
The end of a rip rap area can often produce fish, such as here
where this bass and others hit a spinnerbait cast past the
changing area, and retrieve back to the rip rap.
This is Railroad Lake Dam
in West Lake Park, Iowa,
which is an excellent example
of a windblown rip rap area
with a spillway positioned out
from shore, which can
provide an excellent fishing
target for fish holding
behind and along the side
of the overflow structure.
Ringworms. There are occasions when a
pearl or white tube will be used for
swimming above the rocky area. This is
usually when the bass are hitting baitfish.
If the wind is blowing into the rip rap,
this is generally a very good time to fish
from shallow to deep, as the wind is stirring up food to wash down to the waiting fish. If the wind is blowing parallel
to the shore, position the boat facing the
wind, and make casts at an angle, fishing
the area as if it were water current with
the fish having their noses pointed into
the current, or in this case the wind current.
Other things to observe are if any
pieces of crayfish are being washed up to
the edge, or there is feeding action where
baitfish are being chased. Birds feeding
along shore will many times be the giveaway as to if there are pieces of crayfish,
as well as if there are some dead baitfish.
Whenever fishing a lake that has a rip
rap shore, especially near deep water, as
earlier mentioned, dont pass it up. Be
sure to work the rap.

Until next time, get out on the water,
and enjoy a great day of fishing.

By Jim Edlund
Although obsessed with big walleyes, Minnesota guideJosh Wetzsteinis pretty humble about
statistics. I havent measured a fish in years. Walleyes or muskies. Hold em up, snap a photo and
put em back in the water, says Wetzstein.
Like the sag-bellied monster (in the cell phone image below), caught this past weekend on Pool
4 of the Mississippi River, that Wetzstein guesstimates the fish to be in the neighborhood of 12
lbs.
He was pitching a chartreuseB FISH N Moxion a 3/16-ounce whiteH20 Precision Jig Head.
His program? Pitching shallow water with plastics.
Youve gotta get out of the fast current. The big fish arent there. Find a point, a rock pile. Get
down current. Thats where the big fish are. I jump around using my bowmount, jogging up and
down, pitching riprap, wood, current seams, whatever. Electronic anchoring is key.
And electronics? The big thing is knowing where you can motor, where you cant. Otherwise,
its about reading the river, looking for current seams, inside and outside bends, eddies, and working riprap.
Some days yield big fish, while others dont. Not a big deal to Wetzstein, whos other passion
is muskie fishing, although he catches his share of respectable mid-sized walleyes, too. Besides the
big fish this weekend, we caught probably thirty fish between 18 and 26 inches. And lots of milking males, says Wetzstein.
But its the anticipation that the next cast could connect with a 30-incher that keeps him swinging when most anglers are vertical jigging or pulling three-way rigs. And right now from water
temps of 40 degrees through 50 degrees hes pitching aB FISH N Tackle Ringwormto find
fish, then sizing up to a Moxi. Beefier profile plastics like the Moxi just do better on big fish this
time of year.
Pitching Pointers
I usually pitch upstream and let the flow sweep my bait down past the boat, Wetzstein says.

The best tip, he adds, is to remember the exact location of your pitch just before the bite occurs.
You might catch a fish as your jig and plastic moves right in the front of the boat, but dont cast
back to where you got bit. Pitch right back to the exact spot where the jig hit the water before you
got bit. Thats where I see guys messing up.
And cadence?
It kind of depends on the day, but I usually just cast upstream and give small twitches and little pops off bottom as the current works the bait. Sometimes a really slow retrieve will work, too.
And if he finds fish, hell move on after 20 or 30 minutes. I dont like to beat up on the fish
too much. Some guys will sit on em all day, but I like to move on to a fresh spot, let the spot refill
and come back later.
Like a Plumber
Bring the motherlode with you when you go fish the river. Think of it this way, itd be like a
plumber showing up to fix your sink with nothing but a Channellock pliers. Sure, you might be
able to fix it, but you can do a better job by bringing all your tools.
For Wetzstein, a better job equates to a dozen rods or more 68 to 7St. Croix Legend
Elite & G Loomis NRX with extra fast actions all rigged with different line types in different
diameters and test. He also totes vast variations in jig head styles and weights, and myriad profile
and color plastics. Plus, a few more sticks are rigged with various size blade baits and hair jigs.
During early-season, Wetzstein typically pitches jigs tied direct to 10 15 lb. PowerPro braid
so he can free baits from snags without wasting time re-tying. But when its really cold and the
water clears hell turn to 10 lb. NanoFil and a 15-lb. fluoro leader. And for super-finesse situations he opts for 6 or 8 lb. Berkley Sensation thin-diameter monofilament in high-visibility
orange.
Along the same lines, hes believes too many river anglers play it safe. Dont be scared to cast
into the wood and sticks. Walleyes feel safe there; theyll even spawn in there. Boggles my mind
that you have guys in $50,000 boats who cringe at losing a bait. Burn through jigs if you have
to.
And for the really snaggy spots, he recommends jigs like aB FISH N Tackle Draggin Jig. If
the wood is really gnarly, these jigs do the job. Im always surprised how many big fish I catch way
back in wood.
And when to comes to his favorite Moxis, he sticks to fluorescents and the occasional dark pattern for dirty water, and natural colors like oystershell for clear water.
Besides brighter colors during high, muddy water, Wetzstein recommends fishing more aggressively. Vibration is the deal during low visibility, so give the bait a couple good rips, then a couple pops and let it sit. It you can figure out the little details in the cadence its huge. But dont be
afraid to grab a blade bait or hair jig, too.
