Scholarship Descriptions, Eligibility Criteria and Application Requirements


Robert N. Chang Charitable Foundation Transfer Scholarship
Award Amount: $3,500-$7,000* per year for up to two years
* The number of recipients and financial need of recipients will determine the award amount
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be currently enrolled full-time (at least 12 units) at SJCC
Must have completed at least 24 transferable semester units at SJCC at time of transfer
Must possess a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for all transferable courses at SJCC
Must be a junior upon transfer to a baccalaureate institution (have completed at least 60 units
of transferable units upon transfer)
Must demonstrate that you are a low-income student with financial need, having overcome
challenging obstacles
Must be enrolled full time at a baccalaureate institution by Fall 2010
Recipients will be eligible for a second year of funding if all requirements set out by the
Chang Foundation are met
Additional application materials:
Include an essay describing your college and life experience as well as your goals
Demonstrate that you are a low income student with financial need (for example, you could
write a narrative about your financial needs and include a tax return)
Two Personal Recommendation forms from faculty members

Memorial Scholarships
Annette Horn Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $300
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be a Social Science, Administration of Justice, or Pre-Law major
Must have completed at SJCC at least 12 units at SJCC by the end of the Fall 2009
semester
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Must demonstrate a contribution to SJCC or the community
Must hold an Associated Student Activity Card for the Spring 2010 semester
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from members of the SJCC faculty or the community,
familiar with the applicants contributions
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship

Bob Rice Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $500*
*Final selection will be made by a committee chosen by the family
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be a current full/part-time student at SJCC
Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
Must demonstrate financial need
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from current or former San Jose City College or
Evergreen Valley College instructors
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two page essay addressing the topic: How this
Scholarship Will Help My Education and/or Life?
A typed, double-spaced essay (no longer than one page) addressing your educational goals

Cia McClung Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $300
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled at SJCC in a minimum of 6 units for the Spring 2010 semester
Must have completed or be currently enrolled in Student Teaching (ECE 103) at SJCC
Must have completed at least 12 units at in Child & Family Studies
Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
Additional application materials:
One Personal Recommendation form from an ECE instructor
A typed, double-spaced statement in response to the following: Describe your experience
working with children. What role (or roles) do you hope to play in the field of early childhood
education in the future? Describe your long-term goals and how you plan to reach them.

Memorial Scholarships
Craig Harkins Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $510
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be a full-time or part-time student at SJCC
Must show evidence of motivation for academic success: attitude, not GPA, matters most
Must show evidence of engagement with the college in athletics or other extracurricular
activities
No requirement for need, merit or preference for any particular major field
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms, with at least one from a past instructor
A types, double-spaced essay in response to The role that SJCC plays in your life

Debra Lyn Eberle Memorial Scholarship (SJECCD Foundation)


Award Amount: $300
Applicants will be recommended by the SJCC Scholarship Committee to the Dental Assisting
faculty who will select the final recipient
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be a first-year Dental Assisting student
Must be a single parent
Must be a US Citizen
Must demonstrate financial need
Should have at least a 3.5 GPA
Must hold an Associated Student Activity Card for the Spring 2010 semester
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from SJCC instructional staff

Don Brobst Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $500
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 units
Must be enrolled in at least 6 units for Spring 2010, Fall 2010, and Spring 2011
Priority will be given to a student pursuing a career in a health-related field
Must have minimum GPA of 2.75 at SJCC
Additional application materials:
A typed, double-spaced essay (not to exceed one page) in response to How This
Scholarship Will Assist Me With My Educational Goals in a Health-Related Field

Award Amount: $300
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be majoring in Music
Must be enrolled at SJCC as a full-time student (12 or more units)
Must be actively pursuing a course of study toward transferring to a four-year institution
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms, one must be from an SJCC Music instructor
A typed, double-spaced essay, one or two pages in length, addressing the topic, Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $500 (2 awards given)
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be an African American student and a U.S. citizen
Must be enrolled at SJCC in at least 12 units during the Spring 2010 semester
Must be receiving an AA degree by the end of Spring 2010 and transferring to a 4-year
institution by Fall 2010
Must show evidence of outstanding achievement or gradual improvement in academic
performance
Must demonstrate actual and potential contributions to the betterment of society
Additional application materials:
A photocopy of the applicant's graduation petition
One Personal Recommendation form
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, "Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship"

ESL, Inc. Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $300
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled in at least 12 units during the Spring 2010 semester
Must be a full-time student for the Fall 2010 semester at SJCC or at a 4-year institution
Must demonstrate academic excellence
Must demonstrate substantial financial need
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from SJCC instructors
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship

Memorial Scholarships
Harry Haas Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $500
The Harry Hass scholarship honors the memory of the late SJCC Professors dedication to
biology students. The scholarship is awarded to an SJCC student who is transferring to
advance their education in biological or allied health sciences (nursing, physical therapy).
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be pursuing a higher degree in biology, biochemistry, or the allied health sciences
Must have completed at least two of the following biology classes: Biol 1, Biol 2, Biol 3, Biol
072, Biol 074, Anat 001, Envir 010
Must have completed at least 6 units of course work in two or more semesters at SJCC, and
must currently be enrolled in 6 or more units at SJCC
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20
Applicant should be making plans to transfer to a more advanced program
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from SJCC instructors, one of which must be from a
biology faculty member
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two paragraphs describing how they intend to use
their biology education
Henry Hammer Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $350
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled in at least 12 units for Spring and Fall 2010, and Spring 2011
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50
Preference will be given to students with financial need but are not eligible to apply for
traditional federal student aid programs
Must demonstrate a contribution to the community
Additional application materials:
One Personal Recommendation form from an SJCC instructor
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, "Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship"
Jean Houser Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $300
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be majoring in Music with piano as main instrument of study
Must be actively pursuing a course of study toward transfer to a four-year institution
Must have a minimum GPA of 2.50
Must be enrolled in at least 6 units for Spring 2010, Fall 2010, and Spring 2011 at SJCC
Must hold a SJCC Associated Student Activity Card during semester of award
Additional application materials:
A brief summary of musical training & performance experience
A typed double-spaced essay addressing the topic, My Specific Plans for Music Study and
how I Will Accomplish These Goals

Award Amount: $400
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be pursuing an Administration of Justice major
Must have at least 12 units completed at SJCC by end of the Fall 2009 semester
Must be enrolled in at least 12 units for Spring 2010, Fall 2010, and Spring 2011 semesters
Must show evidence of volunteerism, internship, or employment in the field of law
enforcement or social services
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms, one must be from Administration of Justice instructor
and one from a member of the community
A typed, double-spaced essay addressing the topic of How Will You Make the Difference in
the Field of Administration of Justice
Pitone Tautolo Memorial SJCC Associated Students
Award Amount: $680
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be enrolled in at least 12 units at SJCC during Spring 2010, transferring to a 4-year
institution in Fall 2010
Must have completed at least 12 units at SJCC as of Fall 2009
Must have a declared major in Business, or Business related field
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Must hold an Associated Student Activity Card for the Spring 2010 semester
Must demonstrate participation in extra-curricular activities at SJCC or in the community
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from members of the SJCC faculty or the community,
familiar with the applicant's contributions
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, "Why I Am
Qualified for This Scholarship
Rafaella Carrillo Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $100
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be a first-generation female college student, preferably single head of household
Must be current or former participant of the SJCC Puente Program
Must demonstrate financial need
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
Must demonstrate an involvement in extra-curricular activities at SJCC or in the community
Must be a continuing or transfer student enrolled in at least 6 units for the Fall 2010 semester
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms, one from an SJCC instructor or staff member and
one from a member of the community
A typed, double-spaced one page personal statement; include any financial, personal or
educational barriers that the applicant may have experienced

Richard Yarbrough Memorial Honor Student Scholarship (SJECCD Foundation)
Award Amount: $500
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled in San Jose City Colleges Honors Program
Must be transferring to a four-year institution as a full-time student for the Fall 2010 semester
Must demonstrate substantial financial need
Must be currently employed and working his/her way through college
Additional application materials:
One Personal Recommendation form from an SJCC honors course instructor
A reference letter from current employer
A typed, double spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, "How the
Honors Program Has Helped Me Achieve My Goals

Sam Nakaso Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $500
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled at SJCC in at least 12 units during the Spring 2010 semester
Must have completed at least 24 units at SJCC by the end of the Fall 2009 with a 3.00 GPA
Must be transferring to a four-year institution for the Fall of 2010 semester
Must have participated in a varsity sport at SJCC, or have declared a Physical Education or
Human Performance transfer major
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms, one from an SJCC academic instructor, and one from
the applicants coach or physical education instructor at SJCC
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length addressing the topic, How
Participation in Physical Education and Sports Will Help Me Reach My Goals

Susan Trimble Memorial Labor Studies Scholarship


Award Amount: $250
Eligibility Requirements:
A female student currently enrolled in SJCC participating in labor union, community, and/or
political activities
Applicants plan for the future must include service to labor union, community, and/or
progressive political activities
Preference will be given to a SEIU Local 535 member
Additional application materials:
One Personal Recommendation form
A typed, doubled-spaced essay addressing the topic, Why I Am Qualified for This
Scholarship

Award amount: $500
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be an African-American student enrolled at SJCC or EVC in beginning Fall 2010
Must be enrolled in at least 6 units
Must show evidence of having provided community service
Additional application materials:
A typed, double-spaced essay regarding community service and its impact on their life and
others

Wanbli Mike Ledesma Memorial Scholarship


Award Amount: $500
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicant must be of American Indian and/or Mexican descent
Must be enrolled at SJCC in at least 12 units during the Spring and Fall 2010 semesters
Must have completed at least 12 units at SJCC by the end of Fall 2009 with at least a 2.0
GPA
Must demonstrate financial need
Must possess a current Associated Student Activity Card for Spring and Fall 2010 semesters
Preference given to applicants who demonstrate participation as an athlete at SJCC and/or
Community-Based Recreational leagues/organizations
Additional application materials:
Two Personal Recommendation forms from SJCC counselors and/or instructors
A typed, double-spaced essay of one or two pages in length describing the topic, Tell us
about yourself and write about a personal experience that has helped you set your future
goals
