Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on an SBI associate bank, State Bank of Travancore,
for violation of some of its instructions.

The Union Government on 1 January 2016 signed a Financing Agreement of 50 million US dollars with
the World Bank for Nai Manzil Scheme- Education and Skills Training for Minorities. The credit facilitated
by IDA will be in the form of loan which carries a maturity of 25 years, including a 5-year grace period.

The Union Government on 1 January 2015 decided to rollout a LPG-like direct benefit transfer (DBT)
scheme for kerosene. The scheme will be started from 1 April 2016. In the initial phase, the scheme will
be implemented in selected 26 districts of eight states: Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan.

Government of Telangana on 2 January 2016 launched e-Vahan Bima Scheme to issue motor insurance
policy in digital form. The scheme was launched by Information Technology Minister K T Rama Rao in the
presence of T S Vijayan, Chairman of Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA).

Jharkhand became the first state to sign Memorandum of Understanding with the centre for the Ujwal
Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) reforms for state-owned power distribution companies.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on 1 January 2016 signed the
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) for web-based
monitoring of Indo-German Watershed Development projects.

Andhra Bank has announced it is launching Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) across branches to provide
inter-bank electronic transfer service, capable of processing person to account remittances.

Leading automobile manufacturer Volvo Group on 5 January 2016 announced the merger of its bus
manufacturing arm Volvo Buses India and joint company Volvo India Pvt Ltd (VIPL).

IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd, a Mumbai-based road developer, on 4 January 2016 bagged the 10050
crore Zojila Pass tunnel road project in Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel project is the countrys biggest
road project by cost. The Zojila Pass tunnel will be the longest in South Asia once completed. Presently,
Chenani-Nashri tunnel at 9 km is the countrys longest road tunnel.

Nokia Corporation on 5 January 2015 announced that it completed the regulatory formalities for
acquiring the French telecom equipment company Alca-Lucent.

Department of Posts on 1 January 2016 formed a one-man committee under Kamlesh Chandra to study
issues related to Gramin Dak Sevaks including wage structure and service conditions.

Sterlite Grid on 2 January 2016 set a new benchmark by commissioning the Transmission Project to
Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) ahead of schedule under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding
(TBCB) incentive regime. RAPP is the first power transmission line to be been commissioned ahead of
schedule since the implementation of TBCB scheme.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has announced it has commissioned the first 600 MW coal-based thermal
power plant in Telangana, a state where it has an order book of 6,000 mw. Significantly, the unit
commissioned at Kakatiya Thermal Power Project in Warangal, is the highest rating unit in the State.

Union Cabinet on 6 January 2016 approved creation of a Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units
Development Refinance Agency (MUDRA) loans. The Fund is expected to guarantee more than 1 lakh
crore rupees worth of loans to micro and small units in the first instance.
Main Highlights

The Credit Guarantee Fund for MUDRA Units (CGFMU) has been established for guaranteeing
loans sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana with effect from 8 April 2015.
The Funds objective is to reduce the credit risk to Banks/NBFCs/MFIs/other financial
intermediaries, who are Member Lending Institutions (MLIs).
The Trustee of the Fund will be the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company Ltd. (NCGTC Ltd.).
NCGTC Ltd is a wholly-owned company of Government of India constituted in 2013 under the
Companies Act, 1956 to manage and operate various credit guarantee funds.
The guarantee would be provided on portfolio basis to a maximum extent of 50 percent of
Amount in Default in the portfolio.

Besides, the cabinet also approved to convert MUDRA Ltd. into MUDRA Small Industries Development
Bank of India (SIDBI) Bank as a wholly owned subsidiary of SIDBI. The MUDRA (SIDBI) Bank will undertake
refinance operations and provide support services with focus on portal management; data analysis etc.
apart from any other activity entrusted/advised by Government of India.

Tata Motors in association with Petronas Lubricants International launched Tata Motors Genuine Oil
(TMGO) for its passenger vehicles range in the India market.

To improve capacity utilisation of pellet plants and boost the sector, Union Government on 5 January 2016
reduced export duty on iron ore pellets to zero from 5 percent.

The Jharkhand Government and the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) on 5 January 2016 signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the Ujjwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) Scheme.

The Union Cabinet on 6 January 2016 approved the Stand Up India Scheme to promote entrepreneurship
among Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes and Women entrepreneurs. The Scheme is intended to
facilitate at least two projects per bank branch, on an average one for each category of entrepreneur. It
is expected to benefit at least 2.5 lakh borrowers. The expected date of reaching the target of at least 2.5
lakh approvals is 36 months from the launch of the Scheme. It provides for refinance window through
Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) with an initial amount of 10000 crore rupees. It will
create credit guarantee mechanism through the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC).

Tata Trusts and leading global food manufacturer Mars Incorporated have entered into a Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) to work together to advance agriculture development, address malnutrition and
improve food safety in India.

Reserve Bank of India has permitted bank branches in International Financial Services Centres (IFSC) to
open foreign currency current accounts for entities operating in IFSC. Banking regulator also lifted limit
on short term liabilities IBUs could have from banks. The rules have been eased to facilitate investment
transactions and give flexibility in operations. These bank branches are termed as IFSC Banking Units

India is projected to grow by a robust 7.8 per cent this year and 7.9 per cent in the next two years, the
World Bank forecast. In its latest Global Economic Prospect report which is released every six months - the World Bank marginally reduced India's growth rate 0.2 per cent in 2015 and 0.1 per cent in both
2016 and 2017.

Quikr on 7 January 2016 announced acquisition of the property search website for an

The plans were approved by an inter-ministerial Apex Committee under the State Annual Action Plans

Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) signed two pacts for air services and bus manufacturing on
the last day of Bengal Global Business Summit. The first MoU was signed with Bhutan's Druk Air for
operating flights from Andal to Durgapur, Bagdogra, Bhutan and onwards to Singapore. The second MoU
is for bus manufacturing at Andal in Burdwan district with China's Zhongtong Bus Holding Company.

Thermal Power companies in Odisha will now have to transport fly ash free of cost to road construction
site located within 100 kms perimeter of their plant. The decision in this regard was taken at the joint
meeting between NTPC and State Pollution Control Board at Bhubaneswar on 8 January 2016.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, the Visakhapatnam steel plant, has signed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh
Government for an investment of around Rs. 38,500 crore in various projects.

HDFC Life has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) called
the 'HDFC International Life and Re Company Limited' (HILRCL) with an initial capital outlay of $12.33

PwC India has set up a centre of excellence (CoE) for forensics in Hyderabad. The CoE, with a trained team
of over 100 professionals in India, plans to hire 150 more due diligence and antimoney laundering
professionals in the next one year. This facility will provide clients with solutions related to anti-money
laundering compliance, third-party due diligence, e-mail and document review, and investigation support.

In order to provide relief to drought-hit farmers, the government announced a new Rs 8,800 crore crop
insurance scheme, with significantly lower premium, to cover for loss of crop to natural calamities.
Farmers will pay only 2% of the premium fixed by insurance company for kharif foodgrains/oilseeds crops
and 1.5% for rabi foodgrains/oilseeds crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). The
remaining sum of premium would be borne by the Centre and state governments equally, entailing an
outgo of Rs 8,800 crore annually for coverage of 50% of the crop area of 194.40 million hectare. The
scheme will be rolled out from the coming kharif season beginning June.

Country's largest lender State Bank of India has opened a branch in Seoul, South Korea to predominantly
finance growing trade and investment relations between Korean and Indian companies. SBI is second
Indian bank after Indian Overseas Bank to have branch in South Korea. SBI already had a representative
office in Seoul.

India is the largest recipient of loans from the World Bank, amounting to $102.1 billion, between 1945
and 2015 (as on July 21, 2015), according to the Banks lending report.

Reliance Defence Ltd, a unit of Anil Ambani led Reliance Infrastructure Ltd led on 10 January 2016 signed
a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh Government to set up a world class naval
facility in the state.

NHAI has signed Memorandum of Understanding with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) under

Research (NECTAR) for use of spatial technology for monitoring and managing national highways.

Reserve Bank of India has allowed banks to offer the whole array of services even at off-site Automated
Teller Machines (ATMs). Off-site ATMs are the ones that are set up on a standalone basis and are not on
the premises of a bank branch.

Indias largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), on 14 January 2016 launched and inaugurated Indias first
start-up focused bank branch called SBI InCube in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The specialized branch aims to
understand and address banking needs of a Start-up Business. The bank also launched the wealth
management service SBI Exclusif, which is targeted at the fast-growing affluent segment in the country.
The SBI InCube branch will work towards fulfilling the specific financial needs of the start-ups.

Union Government on 11 January 2016 formed a five-member high level committee to monitor the
Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Corridor (bullet train project). The committee will be headed by NITI
Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya. The mandate of the committee is to look into the overall
operations and technical issues, Make in India component and financial outlay of the 90000 crore rupees
worth project.

Madhya Pradesh (MP) Government on 14 January 2016 signed four MOUs with Singapore to collaborate
in urban planning, skill development, clean energy and food processing. The MoUs were signed in
Singapore in the presence of MP Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan, who was on four day visit from 12
January 2016

Union Government on 14 January 2016 signed a loan agreement with World Bank in New Delhi for the
Neeranchal National Watershed Project. All 28 states which implement the watershed projects will
benefit from this project. However, the nine states, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujrat, Jharkhand,

Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Telangana will benefit more from the project as
they are implementation of large number of watershed schemes in their states.

The Union government plans to connect 585 agricultural produce markets under its National Agriculture
Market (NAM) initiative by March 2018.

The World Bank on 14 January 2016 announced that India saved 1 billion US dollars annually by using
Aadhaar. It was revealed in the banks publication World Development Report 2016: Digital Dividends
that was released in Washington DC, the USA.

Cardiac Design Labs, a startup that has come up with an innovation to help cardiac patients in rural India
access critical care through a wearable device, came out triumphant at a live contest hosted by tech firm
Google at the Startup India event.

China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), in which India and 56 countries have joined
as founding members, was formally opened here today by Chinese President Xi Jinping. An Indian
delegation headed by Dinesh Sharma, additional Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, attended the
opening ceremony.

Exim Bank of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh have entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) for promotion of exports from the state.

In a global first, the World Bank in third week of January 2016 decided to extend an assistance of 20
million US dollar to help reconstruct the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), which got devastated
during cyclone Hudhud in October 2014, in Visakhapatnam. It is the very first time in the history of the

on it for the domestic market.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 20 January 2016 released the first report of the
Alternative Investment Policy Advisory Committee (AIPAC) for comments from the stakeholders. The 21member committee was constituted by the SEBI in March 2015 under the chairmanship of N R Narayan
Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, to suggest measures for development of the alternative investment funds
(AIFs) and startup eco-system in the country.

and Tawi Flood Recovery Project for reconstruction and recovery support in flood-affected areas in which

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 20 January 2016 approved development of the
six laning of Aurangabad- Bihar/Jharkhand Border- BarwaAdda section on National Highway-2 in Bihar
and Jharkhand. The estimated cost of the project is 4918.48 crore rupees including cost of land
acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation and other pre-construction activities.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 20 January 2016 gave its approval for setting up
over 5000 MW of Grid-Connected Solar PV Power Projects on build, own and operate basis. The work
will be implemented by Solar Power Developers (SPDs) with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) under Batch-lV
of Phase-ll of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The total investments expected
under the scheme is about 30000 crore rupees.

The Reserve Bank plans to procure an Audit Management and Risk Monitoring System (AMRMS) for the
central bank from five "potential shortlisted" solution providers, including PwC and Quadrant 4 Software
Solutions. The five short-listed bidders based on Expression of Interest (EOI) evaluation are: Auditime
Information Systems Pvt Ltd, Mumbai; NCSSoft Solutions Pvt Ltd, Chennai; PWC Pvt Ltd, Mumbai;
Quadrant 4 Software Solutions Pvt Ltd, Chennai; and Thomson Reuters Pvt Ltd Mumbai.

booking can be done through the unified web portal which is available in 13 languages.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on 22 January 2016 received environmental clearance from the
Ministry of Environment and Forests for drilling 45 developed wells in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin in
Andhra Pradesh. The total cost of the project is estimated at 53000 crore rupees.

Maharashtras first Solar Power operated Mini-Water Supply Plant was commissioned on 24 January
2016 in Hingna village of Mouda Taluka in Nagpur district.

Union Ministry Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 14 January 2016 notified stricter environment
standards for sugar industries operating in various states in the country.

The Union Cabinet on 27 January 2016 approved increase in the Authorized Share Capital of the National
Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC). With this, the Authorized Share
Capital of NSFDC is increased from 1000 crore rupees to 1200 crore rupees.

Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM), the missile co-developed by India and Israel, was
successfully test-fired on 30 December 2015 on the Western Sea Board. For LRSAM or BARAK 8 missile,
as it is called in Israel, it was the first test in India. Earlier, on 11 November 2015, it was successfully testfired from a range in Israel.

engineers in US, with 950,000 out of the continent's total 2.96 million, according to a new report.

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) on

The World Bank on 14 January 2016 released a report titled World Development Report 2016: Digital

India is home to the fourth largest population of millionaires in the Asia Pacific region, with 2.36 lakh
such high net worth individuals, while Japan topped the list with 12.60 lakh people, a report says.
According to the Asia Pacific 2016 Wealth Report, by New World Wealth, India was ranked among the

top five Asia Pacific countries in terms of number of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs). HNWIs
(millionaires) were defined as those individuals with net assets of $1 million or more.

Reflecting an acute shortage of skilled labour force and difficult business conditions, India has slipped 11
places to rank 89th on a global index of talent competitiveness, a list which has been topped by
Switzerland. Switzerland is followed by Singapore, Luxembourg, the United States and Denmark in the
top five positions on the annual Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTC) released by INSEAD business
school in partnership with Adecco Group and the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore.

Oxfam on 18 January 2016 released a report titled An Economy for the 1%. The report analysed growing
trends of concentration of wealth across the world and suggested remedies to correct the anomaly.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on 18 January 2016 released the World Tourism Barometer,
which reviewed trends in tourism at the regional and global level for 2015 and enumerated prospects
for 2016

India has emerged as one of the five most promising markets for businesses globally as it offers one of
the best opportunities for both domestic as well as global companies, says a survey. According to the
annual global CEO survey of consultancy giant PwC released here at the WEF Annual Meeting, the top
five markets considered as most important for overall growth prospects by the respondents are USA,
China, Germany, the UK and India.

Transparency International on 27 January 2016 released the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2015.
The Index measured the perceived levels of public sector corruption in 168 countries and territories
across the world. While Denmark, with rank 1, was adjudged as the most corruption-free country among
the surveyed countries, India was placed at the 76th place with 38 points. India was at the 85th
position among the 175 countries surveyed in the CPI 2014.

India will be the fastest growing major economy in the world in 2016, says the United Nations World
Economic Situation and Prospects 2016 report launched. This report expects the Indian economy, which
accounts for over 70 per cent of South Asia's GDP, to grow 7.3 per cent in 2016 and 7.5 per cent in 2017,
up from an estimated 7.2 per cent in 2015. South Asia is expected to be the world's fastest growing
region in 2016 and 2017 despite challenging global conditions, the report added.

Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a US-based think-tank, on 14 January 2016 released the 2016 Nuclear
Security Index with the theme Building a Framework for Assurance, Accountability, and Action. The
Index assessed global nuclear security conditions in 176 countries in two areas - the potential theft of

weapons-usable nuclear materials and the potential sabotage of nuclear facilities. Among the 24 states
with one kilogram or more of weapons-usable nuclear materials in the world, while Australia was
adjudged as the safest, India was among the least safe with the 21st rank.

US News and World Report, WPPs BAV Consulting and the Wharton School of the University of
Pennsylvania on 20 January 2016 released the inaugural Best Countries report, a joint rankings and
analysis project at the World Economic Forum, Davos. The rankings evaluate 60 nations across 24
rankings lists on a wide range of criteria, from sustainability to economic influence. Germany is viewed
as the best country in the world followed by Canada and the United Kingdom. India is ranked as the
22nd best country in the World.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) on 19 January
2016 released World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2015 report. The report highlights that
the world economy stumbled in 2015 and only a modest improvement is projected for 2016/17.
