CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a valuable,
decisive and critical resource for individuals, communities, enterprises and
organizations. The role of ICT in organizations has expanded much over the
years. From mere recording of business transactions and reports generation,
ICT has gone on to becoming the means to securely procuring raw materials,
managing production, and facilitating distribution. As a general purpose
technology, it is widely applicable in manufacturing and service sectors, and
therefore is intimately linked with the rest of the economy.
The Philippines has become one of the fastest growing economies and
mobile markets in Asia; its economy has undergone an 11% average annual
rise in the last 3 years, and unique mobile subscriber growth has averaged
6% over the same period. However, it is the level of consumer engagement
with mobile and technology that has come to differentiate it from other fast
growing peers in Asia.
Known as the texting capital of the world and the social media capital of
the world at various times over the last few years, colleges and universities
in the Philippines has adopted this advancement of technology to its
transactions. Most of it can now be done using the internet and is also
accessible to their mobile devices such as viewing of grades, evaluations etc.

Even though the systems are automated, some of its transactions may still
be in the manual format.

In the University of Perpetual Help System

Laguna, there is an Automated Enrollment System, but the Assessment

Procedure is being done manually.

In the year 2000, the College of

Engineering and Tech. Voc. of the said university has only 300 students, in
which the Assessment Procedure is not yet a problem.

In another five years, this

problem will surely affect the start of the classes thus, the affectivity of the
learning procedures will greatly be compromised.
This study presents a new way of adopting latest technology to the present
procedure of the school.

By using mobile app the students will now be

able to proceed to the enrolment avoiding too much delays of its previous
manual procedure in the assessment.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

General Objective:
Development of a Mobile Application-Based Enlistment Module for Enrolment
System of University of Perpetual Help System Laguna
Specific Objectives:

1. To design a mobile application-based enlistment module for enrolment

system with the following features:
a. Advising the application will automatically provide students what are the
subjects that they can enrol, as well as those that they can advance based
on their grades;
b. Enlistment of subjects it will offer the students subject enlistment
according to the available subjects to enrol, students and subject
schedule, and maximum number of units that the student can have;
c. Viewing of grades users can view their grades based from the subjects
that they already taken;
d. School updates updates will be available for the students to browse in
connection to the website of the school;
2. To create the system as designed;
3. Test the performance of the system according to the functionality, reliability,
and response time;
4. Evaluate the performance of the system.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study involves the development of a mobile application-based enlistment module
for the enrolment system University of Perpetual Help.

This includes Assessment,

Viewing of Grades and Updates from the school website.

The users will access the mobile app created in Android Studio. This app will connect
to the website created using PHP and MYSQL for its database. And this will only work

with internet connection present and it will not replace the Enrolment System being
used by the university.
Due to confidentiality and security issues from the target school, the proposed system
was only allowed to be tested on the College of Engineering and Tech. Voc. only.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is intended to be used for the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna.
The College of Engineering and Tech. Voc. is the approved College for testing since the
proponent is presently connected to the said department as Full-Time Faculty Member.
With the mentioned study, students will have an ease to the Assessment Procedure
because they will only need to show to the Deans Office during enrolment if there are
conflicts with their schedule or subjects.
For the future researchers, since the school already have a working Enrolment System
and a website for viewing grades and school updates, it is a great chance to integrate
the present Enrolment System as well as the website, and make them available through
a mobile app.
