Leadership Council Seminar - Saturday, May 8 from 10-11:30a

On Saturday, May 8th from
10am-11:30am, the entire McKendree
community will gather to participate
in our first Leadership Council meeting
of 2010. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us,
“For surely I know the plans I have for
you, says the LORD, plans for your
welfare and not for harm, to give you
a future with hope.”
Martha Barr and Heather Stewart will
co-facilitate our time together. All
persons, whether heading a
committee/team or as a part of a
committee/team, and even if you are
interested in serving on a committee/
team, will engage in the imagining,
connecting, and planning of
established and/or new ministries over
the 18 months.
Expect to experience….
 discerning through prayer
God’s continued vision and
direction for McKendree
leaders
 hearing how the Leadership
Council is designed to inspire,
promote, and empower
leaders with existing and
newly established ministries
 formulating ministry plans for
the 2010 and 2011 ministry

Be The Change Day recap
TN Conference Youth
were invited to "Be the
Change" on April 17.
Brentwood UMC and
McKendree UMC
partnered to "Be the
Change" for the old
aerobics room in the
CLC! About 15 people
from Brentwood UMC,
along with over 20
people from McKendree showed up to
transform the room into an inviting, usable
space not only for the youth of
McKendree but to also prepare it for multi-
purpose use. We are even working on
plans for it to be an after-school
Community Center for teens this fall!
We painted the entire room, cleaned, and
rearranged the furniture. Through our "Be
the Change Day" we have almost
completed Phase I! Phase II of the
transformation will involve replacing the
carpet with new flooring and purchasing
some more furnishings for the room. The
youth will be selling candy bars and
participating in other fundraisers to help
with the funding for Phase II. Please be in
support of our fundraising efforts, and feel
free to make donations to this cause. You
can write a check to McKendree UMC,
designating it for UMYF or for aerobics
room transformation.

McKendree Day Care Turns 20!
Our child care program opened her
doors twenty years ago initially caring for
less than twenty children and employing
only a handful of staff. Fast forward to
2010 and we reflect on two decades of
exceptional early care for children and
families in the downtown community.
Serving 72 children and their families, our
three-star rated program boasts
developmentally appropriate programing
and warm and responsive relationships as
her foundation. Twenty-one staff (full and
part time) make up our amazing team of
early care professionals.
On Friday, May 7th, the center will host a
birthday extravaganza complete with a
parade, entertainment and treats. Please
check with Cindy Ligon for details if you
would like to party with us!

Mission Study: “Food and Faith”
Where: Fellowship Hall

Time: 9a - Noon
Meal: Add-A-Dish
Who: Everyone invited!
Faith strengthens us. Faith
comforts us. Food does, too.
Food is a gift from God and we need it to
survive. In this study we will explore how our
faith is nurtured, strengthened, and
enhanced by food. We will explore biblical
stories relating to food as a gift from God.
We offer food as a means of hospitality to
others and a way of giving thanks and
sharing. We will take a look at how the
rituals of feasting and of fasting reminds us
of our need for God. Above all, we will
learn that the sacrament of Holy
Communion is food and a gift of grace to
be celebrated and shared in community.
Come together at God’s table for learning
and fellowship!
The social action project for May is the
YWCA Shelter, Domestic Violence program.
They are in need of kitchen and bath
towels, and personal items such as lotion,
deodorant, toothpaste, etc.

Special Offering for Camera Repair
In March, UMCom donated
a used, lightly damaged
professional video camera
to McKendree. In working
order, this equipment will
greatly enhance some of
our existing communication
components. It will also give us the tools to
successfully produce effective media that
can be
broadcast
beyond our
community in
mediums like
video podcasts
and virtual
church.

McKendree will be
hosting junior and
senior high school
students from all over
the country as they
descend on Nashville
to participate in YouthWorks Summer Missions!
We are already beginning to prepare our
facilities for their arrival as we will be hosting
students starting the week of June 20 all the
way through the week of August 1! What an
excellent opportunity for us to be salt and light
to several hundred students coming to impact
thousands in our city during the summer of
2010!
