BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases contribute heavily to the deaths of human population in

every continent. One of the diseases that is very common nowadays is
hypertension. Hypertension is a term used to describe high blood pressure.
According to the WHO hypertension is when blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or
above most of the time. Several researches have shown that there are risk
factors that play a big role in the development of hypertension. The prevalence of
hypertension varies between 15-35% in urban adult populations of Asia. In India,
China, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, there has been a
rapid increase in prevalence of hypertension. An epidemiological study shows
that South Asians experience high rates of hypertension. Hypertension also is
directly responsible for 57% of stroke deaths and 24% of CHD deaths in India.
This condition is mainly associated with other factors such as high sodium intake,
overweight, sedentary behavior, alcohol, lower/higher social class, diabetes
mellitus, and smoking. Hypertension is also highly associated with increased risk
for stroke, which is a deadly disease that is highly prevalent. This presses the
urgent need for prevention and early diagnosis of hypertension, especially areas
with increased risk such as the Asian continent.
OBJECTIVES:
1.

To determine the risk factors for hypertension in Asian population.

2.

To determine the level of risk in every risk factor for hypertension in Asian
population.
