THE SONOMA
SONOMA COAST

keep the Wellington name alive and continue John and
Peters dream.
The property is planted to a wide arrange of varieties
ranging from Marsanne and Roussane to Malbec and
Grenache with three single-lot, old-vine Zinfandels dating
back as early as 1882. While Wellington is currently in
distribution, the re-branded Wellington will be kept
boutique in size, producing only 3,000 cases annually with
a portion allocated exclusively to the wine club.
VJB Cellars has been dedicated to showcasing the
familys Italian heritage by only producing Italian varietals
and Wellington will be their predominately FrenchBoudreaux brother winery. The winery and tasting room sit
amongst the 20-plus acres giving the Belmonte family and
team the ability to educate guests out in the vineyards and
share their passion for wine where it all begins. The natural
beauty, serene quiet and smell of fermenting grapes will be a
nice complement to the bustling village and mouthwatering
aromas of wood-fired pizzas that VJB Cellars offers.
With the re-opening of the Wellington property set for
late spring of 2017, the Belmonte family is excited for all
the new experiences they will be able to offer for both the
local community and visitors of the Sonoma Valley.
Producing quality wines paired with an exceptional
experience for guests to embrace with their family and
friends will still remain the upmost priority for the
Belmonte family.
VJB Vineyards & Cellars is located at the corner of
Highway 12 and Shaw Avenue (60 Shaw Avenue) in
Kenwood, CA 95452. They are open daily for tasting from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, call (707)

From Geology to Monopoly, Its All Waiting For You at MacPhail Wines
Its All About the Vineyard
As steadfast Pinot drinkers can attest, Pinot Noir is all about the vineyard. The
clones, vinification, blending, barrel/oak choices play a major roleof course
but the beauty of stunning Pinot Noir is how it expresses itself based on what it's
growing in. Meaning the soil type, the mixture of minerals, organic matter, gases,
liquids, and myriad organisms that together, support and feed the vine. And, with
this thought in mind, James MacPhail sources his fruit from vineyards with
serious pedigrees, including Toulouse Vineyard (Anderson Valley) Pratt, Wildcat,
Sangiacomo (all Sonoma Coast), Rose Rock Vineyard (Eola Hills in Oregon), Ritas
Crown Vineyard (Santa Rita Hills), and Sundawg Ridge and Dutton Ranch, both
in Russian River Valley. Producing just under 5,000 cases per year of small-batch
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, James hopes to convey a sense of nostalgia though
his winemakingkeeping the process simple, allowing the personality of each
vineyards fruit to shine through and most importantly, crafting wines that convey
joy to those who drink them.

Napa Valleys Robert Mondavi Winery Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Year
Commemorative Bottlings, New Visitor Programs, Special Events
and a Gala Anniversary Weekend in July will Mark the Milestone
When Robert Mondavi opened the doors to his eponymous
winery in July, 1966, he was inspired by his belief that he could make
world-class wines in the Napa Valley. Those dreams realized, Robert
Mondavi Winery is today recognized around the world as one of the
most iconic institutions in American wine and food. This year, Robert
Mondavi Winery celebrates another major achievement with its 50th
Anniversary. To mark the milestone, an array of new visitor programs,
special events and commemorative bottlings are being introduced
throughout the year.
Recalling Mr. Mondavis spirit of innovation and his one-time stint
conducting the Napa Valley Symphony in the just-opened To Kalon
Cellar, Director of Winemaking, Genevieve Janssens and the
winemaking team have crafted a celebratory 50th Anniversary red
wine blend, Maestro, worthy of the man himself. Like a well-tuned
symphony, the seamless cuvee of Napa Valley Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec creates a
delicious and harmonious whole. The limited-release bottling is
scheduled for release in April, 2016. The winery will also introduce
three winery-only bottlings in April, all named after Mr. Mondavis
memoir published in 1999, Harvests of Joy a Red Blend, Fum
Blanc and a ros, which features Margrit Mondavis artwork on the
label.
In addition to the new wines, a commemorative 50th Anniversary
label will also adorn new releases of some of the most enduring
bottlings from Robert Mondavi Winery: the 2015 Fume Blanc, Napa
Valley; 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley; and the winerys
hallmark 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, To Kalon Vineyard.
Throughout the year, the Oakville winery is offering a variety of
50th Anniversary-themed tastings for visitors. Two standout programs
include the Library Wine Tasting and the Five Decades Dinner.
Offered on a daily basis the Library Wine Tasting features a
customized flight that includes four wines selected from five decades
of Robert Mondavi winemaking. Guests may sit in the luxurious To
Kalon Reserve Room, or on the adjacent patio, as they savor these
special vintages. While reservations are suggested, they are not
required.
The more exclusive Five Decades Dinner is available by reservation
only and promises an unmatched evening at Robert Mondavi Winery.
Visitors opting for this program will taste wines from each of the last
five decades, followed by a four-course wine pairing dinner
meticulously prepared by winery chef, Jeff Mosher in the Vineyard
Room.
On June 3rd, Robert Mondavi Winery will be the host location for
the Napa Valley Barrel Auction portion of the world-renowned
Auction Napa Valley. Robert Mondavi was a founding member of this
event 35 years ago and an ardent supporter of giving back to the local
community. The proceeds from the auction weekend support

PORTWORKS
Got a sweet tooth? Feeling a bit decadent and naughty? Let me tell you about a
delicious, almost secret place in Petaluma. Itll be between you and me. Ssshh dont tell
Sonoma Portworks is a sweet secret indeed, one that you simply must check out, even if
Ports and dessert wines are only an occasional indulgence for you.
Located in the Foundry Wharfa cool little enclave of artists studios, industrial
buildings, restaurants and shops on the river in Petaluma, Sonoma Portworks is a
fascinating and delicious destination. The tasting room is cozy and comfortable, housed in
a building constructed in the early 1900s. Open beam ceilings provide an airy feel and the
moveable tasting bars are works of art, made by owner, Bill Readingcorrugated metal
sheets support beautiful, hand-polished cherrywood. Behind the tasting bars, more barrels
create a rustic backdrop. To further add to the comfortable, authentic appeal of this place,
whimsical sculptures, also made by Bill Reading, accent the walls.
Sonoma Portworks is the only winery in Sonoma County that specializes in ports and
dessert wines, and one of only a handful in California that does so. Something else to note
is that they press all of their wines by foot for the gentlest extraction of flavors possible.
Talk about old-world style winemaking!
I met with Bill Reading, owner and winemaker and his lovely wife, Caryn. Their
enthusiasm and passion about what they do is infectious. Bill absolutely loves what he does
and it is a pleasure and an interesting education to chat with him about his wines and
winemaking techniques. He and Caryn are happy to spend lots of time with each visitor,
explaining the wines and giving private tours of the facility and surrounding area.

Glen Ellen has a few unique places worth visiting and the tasting room at Eric Ross
Winery is one of them. Just off Arnold Drive, Eric Ross Winery welcomes wine lovers
to stop in and stay awhile, savoring the perfect varietal wine and stunning
photography that together tells a beautiful story about a mans passion for winemaking
and art.
Walk in and sense the fun farm-to-table vibe with its colorful metaled rooster
standing tall in the room waiting to greet you. The space is bright and open in an
urban rustic style, with high vaulted ceilings, a steel countered wine bar, oak barrels,
leather rocking chairs and comfy couches by the fire. The best hospitality, winemaking
and journalistic experience comes to life in this room and is a cornerstone of Glen
Ellen.
Eric Ross Winery has been around for twenty years, cultivating high-end fruit from
single designate vineyards in the Sonoma Valley and genuine relationships to make
honest and expressive wines. Eric Luse, owner of Eric Ross Winery works
collaboratively with his wine grape growers and estate owners to produce over 3000
cases of wine. In fact, the inspiration behind his 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, The
Immigrant, was Erics recognition to Chuy Ordaz, the man behind the grapes that
helped Eric make these hand-crafted wines possible. This vintage came from the
Mayacamas Mountains, a 50-year-old vineyard that produces a full-bodied wine with
well-integrated tannins. It is a beautiful reflection of the land.
In addition, there are over a dozen varietal wines to choose from on Eric Rosss
tasting menu. A must try is The 2013 Nicks Block Pinot Noir from the Russian River.

Wente Vineyards
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine
tasting experiences, should be a top destination that people
consider when planning their next wine country getaway. As the
countrys oldest, continuously operated, family-owned winery
and Californias First Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards
would be a good place to start the journey. The winery, led by
fourth and fifth generation family members, has clearly proven
their leadership both in winegrowing and in being one of
Californias premier wine country destinations.
