In our October issue devoted to Mens Style, we wrestle
with the idea of what makes a true T&C man. In February 1964, we put one of the classicsAristotle Socrates Onassison the cover in a photograph by Slim Aarons beside the line What Onassis Wants Onassis Gets. The
Greek Argentine shipping magnate overcame the
hardships of World War I and amassed a fortune so vast that his only granddaughter and heir, Athina Onassis Roussel, consistently finds herself listed among the worlds wealthiest individuals. Onassis had a dynamic personality and a tabloid-worthy personal life that set him apart from Stavros Niarchoshis ex-brother-in-law who went on to marry his first wife, Athinaand his father-inlaw, Stavros Livanos, both of whom actually outpaced Ari in wealth. But does it matter? He may not have been the richest but he knew how to comport himself like Zeus. T&C got a rare glimpse inside the life and mind of the man known variously as the Golden Greek, the Maritime Midas, and the Modern Odysseus, in a quote-worthy profile. (The way you get to be a celebrity is to get to control peoples playthings, he said. And: My favorite country is the one that grants maximum immunity from taxes, trade restrictions, and unreasonable regulations.) The interview spanned two issues. In the second installment, Onassis spoke of his first encounter with Jackie Kennedy, in 1963. (It should be noted that at the time of publication, Onassis had rejoined the ranks of the worlds most eligible bachelors, after Athina had grown fed up with his public philandering with the stormy Maria Callas, on and off his yacht Christina.) After suffering a miscarriage in August 1963, the First Lady took a Mediterranean holiday with her sister, Lee Radziwill. Onassis placed the Christina at Mrs. Kennedys disposal and she soon threw a party on board for a handful of
guests, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. But after a
Republican congressman from Ohio publicly complained about the First Lady enjoying such largesse while the United States government had cases pending against Onassis, Jackie promptly returned to the States, but not before telling a fellow guest (a Viscountess who declined identification) in a seemingly innocent manner, I love him. Hes really quite ugly looking, but he has a terrific amount of something or other when he wants toand when he turns it on, everything begins to look different; he even begins to look handsome!
