Dorothy I. Height—Icon and Friend


(NNPA) - When Dr. Dorothy Irene Height sought a

life of my friend, mentor and civil rights icon, but she wryly noted that she’d sold neither drugs
nor her body, and that her life didn’t conform to any stereotype.
What a life it was. It spanned more than 70 years of activism, personal meetings with
every president from FDR through Barack Obama, leadership positions in several women’s
organizations, including the National Council of Negro Women and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
and international travel that incorporated advocacy for women and girls around the world. She
has protested everything from lynching to joblessness, and her protests have always had a quiet
dignity about them.
Indeed, when the journalist Bill Moyers aired a television special on the “vanishing” Black
family, her inspiration was to organize an antidote, an annual “Black Family Reunion” held
in Washington, D.C. and other cities to show the nation and the world that the Black family is
hardly dying. President Obama gives the

Morgan State Runs Solidly at Penn Relays

The Morgan State track and field team put up solid performances at the 116th annual
Penn Relays at Franklin Field this past weekend, April 23-25, hosted by the University of
Pennsylvania.
The top finisher for the women’s team was Allison Randall, who placed 11th in the women’s
discus throw championship on Friday with a throw of 44.196 meters.
The Lady Bears’ relay team of Avionne Sloan, Tanisha Kendrick, Kamice Smalls and
Brittney Wattley finished the 400-meter race in 37th place with a time of 3 minutes, 50.17
seconds, while Wattley, Sloan, Smalls and Tendai Hill finished the 100-meter relay in 52nd
place with a time of 47.86 seconds.
As for the men’s team, Trey Charles placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of
52.11 seconds.
Charles also teamed up with Jordan Higgs, Isaac Richardson and Kevin Bowen in the
400-meter relay to finish 21st overall with a time of 3:11.90 seconds. The team was able to
qualify for the IC4A race, and finished that event in sixth place with a time of 3:12.60.
Morgan State’s sprint medley team made up of Charles, Carbinere Whyte, Bowen and
Richardson placed 30th with a time of 3:30.01 seconds, while Whyte, Bowen, Charles and
Higgs grouped to run the 100-meter relay race with a time of 42.53 seconds to finish 44th
overall.
Morgan State will now prepare to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track
and Field Championship on May 6-8 in Greensboro, N.C.

Sealed Bids or Proposals, in duplicate addressed to the Board of


Estimates of the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore and marked for
Sanitary Contract No. 855-Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) Modi-
fications to Existing Facilities at Patapsco WWTP will be received at
the Office of the Comptroller, Room 204, City Hall, Baltimore, Maryland
until 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Positively no bids will
be received after 11:00 A.M. Bids will be publicly opened by the Board
of Estimates in Room 215, City Hall at Noon.
The Contract Documents may be examined, without charge, at the
Department of Public Works Service Center located on the first floor of
the Abel Wolman Municipal Building, 200 N. Holliday Street, Baltimore,
Maryland 21202 as of Friday, April 30, 2010 and copies may be
purchased for a non-refundable cost of $450.00.
Conditions and requirements of the Bid are found in the bid
package.
All contractors bidding on this Contract must first be prequalified by the
City of Baltimore Contractors Qualification Committee. Interested parties

21202. If a bid is submitted by a joint venture (”JV”), then in that

Cost Qualification Range for this work shall be $20,000,000.01 to
$30,000,000.00.

WWTP on May 27, 2010 at 10:00 A.M.
Principal Items of work for this project are:
o Improvements to the Existing Primary and Secondary Process
Treatment System
o Construction of Site Improvements and Utility Work
o Improvements to Site Lighting
