An unwelcomed decision by the Primary

Care Network (PCN) to eliminate thousands
of dollars worth of funding to Strathmores
Growing Families Society is forcing the hand
of the organization to appeal for community
support and became an active motivator in
the creation of their first fundraising event
the Family Barn Dance.
A year ago, PCN informed the society that
due to various circumstances funding would
no longer be available, resulting in a $50,000
deficit. While funding and small increases
from other sources such as the Family and
Community Support Services (FCSS) have
aided to keep the organization afloat, the
shortfall could result in repercussions such
as loss of positions and programs.
Having relied on a constant annual $74,000
budget from the federal government for 20
years, since its conception, without increases
the Growing Family Society sought outside
funding to maintain increases in demand
and population. With the recent spending
cut, the society fears keeping up with community needs may become onerous.
Weve just continuously received less and
less funding, said Margo Sevcik, president
of Growing Families Society.
With the funding loss we are at the point
that we cant keep everything going at a level
that would serve the community well, so now
were coming to the community and saying
we need help. We need to raise some funds
to keep our programs going. This is the first
time that the Growing Families Society, in 20
years, has ever come to the business community and asked for support, and theyve given
us tremendous support.
Numerous local businesses and organizations, including the Western Financial
Group, the Strathmore Dental Center, Gold
Key Registry, Cheadle Lions and Kims Caf,
have contributed to the fundraiser through
sponsoring a DJ, pancake supper, the kids
carnival, photo-booth and kids canteen. Other businesses also provided door and spin-itto-win-it prizes, as well as items for the live
and silent auctions, which include a scooter,
tickets to Aspen Crossing, Heritage Park, and
the Telus Sparks Science Centre. The society
has also received nearly $2,000 in donations
from other local businesses, $500 of which
were presented to the organization on April
4.

Thunderous performance
Tina Turner impersonator Luisa Marshall brought down the house with her performance at the
Royal Canadian Legion to a sold-out crowd in Strathmore on April 2. The concert was part of a

Votes are in: Duffala named new

councillor to Standard
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Emotions ran high and the village
was buzzing on Monday evening as
the majority of 93 ballots cast, unofficially elected Brandon Duffala as the
new member to Standards bcouncil.
Duffala and opponent Elizabeth Nystrom hit the campaign train shortly after submitting their nomination papers
on March 7, following the announcement of Councillor Ron Corbiells resignation.
Knocking on nearly every house in
the village with a population of 390
Duffala believes investing the 20 hours
of meeting the community contributed
to the 6327 results that landed in his
favour - three additional votes were
considered spoilt.
We felt that I couldnt ask the residents of Standard to put the effort into
coming out to vote if I wasnt willing
to put the effort into going to visit
them, and I believe that made a big
difference to get the whole community
involved, Duffala said.
The record turnout at the polls
speaks to the degree of interest and
participation in our community affairs.

I remain committed to doing whatever

is necessary to ensure all the best for
the residents of the Village of Standard.
There was a lot of community spirit involved and it was pretty amazing.
The former commercial pilot, originally from British Columbia, was involved with volunteer work in the
community for the past five years. This
included helping design and build the
float for the Standard Library for the
Sports Day Parade. While he is still celebrating with his family, the 47-yearold is eager to get started in his new
role.
The election was great, everyone
was really supportive, it was a really
great experience and we had a ton of
voters come out, said Elizabeth Nystrom.
It was fun and I think Im going to
run in the next election. Congratulations to Brandon and hes going to
make a great councillor.
Duffala remained confident Nystrom
will continue her community involvement and hopes to see her run for
council in the future.
In appreciation for the hospitality
and support shown by the community, which he said was heart-warming,

SHS Grads raise funds with recyclables

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

For the third consecutive year, the Strathmore High
School graduates and their parents are organizing a bottle
drive to raise funds for the 2016 graduating class celebrations, establishing it as the only major fundraiser in light of
recent economic hardship.
The bottle drive brought in nearly $5,000 in its first year,
and over $2,000 last year. With Albertas economic nosedive,
consideration was lent to the circumstances, contributing to
the decision of determining it the only major fundraiser to
support the 2016 graduates.
Were not going to knock on doors asking for donations
this year, said Chris Hawes, parent of a 2016 SHS graduate
and organizer.
Weve been doing this with the cadets and its been successful and it helps people in the community get rid of their
bottles, and it helps the grads too. They dont have to do
a lot of extra fundraising and we dont want to take them
away from their studies.
Grade 12 students from surrounding areas attending

Strathmore High School are also encouraged to consider

collecting bottles and cans from neighbours in their hamlets and villages to lessen the burden on Strathmore this
year.
Although the turnout of parents and students participating on the day, April 9, remains unknown, over 50 volunteers had a hand in the bottle drive in previous years.
Having secured the quonset, the building will serve as a
location for sorting, counting, and bagging the recyclables.
While each graduating student is already paying a $35
charge towards the 2016 grad, there will still be a funding
shortfall which the bottle drive hopes to address.
Hopefully we get the support from the community, said
Hawes. And hopefully it works out and the future grads
can do the same sort of thing next year.
The 2016 SHS graduating class aims to raise $5,000 to
ensure this years ceremony; any money remaining will be
earmarked for next years graduating class.
Bottles and cans can be dropped off at the Strathmore
Bottle Depot by asking them to donate the money to the
Strathmore High School 2016 grads. For more information
contact Chris Hawes at 403-969-1766.

If losing weight was one of your New Years

resolutions, how are you doing? One good
suggestion to aid in weight-loss is to not eat any food
in the evenings until breakfast. Hard to do? Heres
a suggestion: good oral hygiene complements
good health. Do your bedtime brushing right after
the evening meal. It may discourage you from
eating anymore that day otherwise youll have to
brush and floss again.
You dont hear too much about the eat your
blood type theory anymore. There is no scientific
evidence that if you eat the foods you are told to
eat according to your blood type, you will have
a healthier life. The real solution is a diet rich in
vegetables, red meat at the most twice weekly, fish
and minimal processed foods. And the true answer
to weight-loss? Take in less calories than you burn.
Having trouble swallowing pills? Try this. First
take a deep breath and exhale to help you relax.
Swallow a sip of water then place the tablet or
capsule far back to the back of your tongue. Drink
a little water and as you swallow, tilt your head a
little down toward your chest. Throwing your head
back doesnt work as well.
Some drugs (antihistamines, blood pressure, antiParkinsons, decongestants and water pills can
cause dry mouth. A regular amount of saliva in
our mouth is important to rinse food debris from
the teeth and gums and help protect the mouth
from disease. Talk to our pharmacists if you are
concerned about dry mouth.
Solving your medication problems is our job. We
are happy to serve you.

Hussar CAO resigns

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

After four years as Hussars Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Jennifer Pratt
made the decision to step down from the
position effective March 17.
Pratt grew up in Calgary before moving out to Hussar 16 years ago, where
she was able to raise two children, who
now have grown up and moved away.
Prior to the CAO position, she had no
history in politics and held many jobs including at the Emmes Esso gas station
in Bassano.

She said every day was a different day

when youre a small town CAO because
there was always something interesting
and challenging that came of her project
responsibilities.
Her tenure included being involved
in the lift station upgrades, road paving projects and an updated community
emergency management plan.
Its a very active community, said
Pratt. Theyre always trying to get new
projects and make improvements. The
biggest thing I just finished was the community emergency management plan
and Ive been working on that for three

years. That was one of my biggest accomplishment was getting that finished.
Pratt felt that project was important
to her because every community needs
an emergency management plan, it was
something she was interested in personally, and the villages plan hadnt been
updated since the early 2000s
Pratt said challenges with council contributed to her decision
Definitely mixed feelings, said Pratt.
I going to miss the residents. I really
like living here and the people in the
town. They were always helpful and supportive to me. I learned how municipal

www.StrathmoreTimes.com

government works and you dont have a

clue until youre doing it and you realize
how much goes into running a municipality.
I gained a lot of respect for the bigger centres, Strathmore and Calgary, and
everything they have to do. You just see
it on a micro-level in a village but then
you extrapolate that to a big city and you
realize how much it takes to run a municipality.
Pratt hasnt ruled out a similar position
in the future.
Hussars council had no comment on
Pratts resignation.

Family Barn Dance

a vital fundraiser
Continued from Page 1

Chinook Financial is pleased to assist the Growing Families Society so
that they continue to provide valuable
programs and education to Strathmore
and area families, said Kimberley Sharkey-Thompson, regional branch manager at the Strathmore location. Making
Money Make a Difference by supporting local communities, its what we do.
According to the society, money
raised from the Family Barn Dance
could secure the position for the lifeskills worker, a position thats costing
$20,000 outside of government funding.
Currently donations made to the organization are allocated to programs, yet administration is a vital necessity to keep
programs and volunteers organized.
Therefore, the fundraiser will provide
monetary gain geared specifically towards administration and staff.

We just need some stability to our

programming, a way of knowing that we
can keep these programs going rather
than running our programs on a yearly
budget and not knowing what the next
year is going to bring, Sevcik said.
By doing our own fundraising and
bringing money in, it helps to ensure
that there is money. If you dont have
administrative help you just kind of
die. Volunteers are great, and we are a
volunteer-based organization, but volunteers need to be organized and thats
where the office staff can really help
us.
The Family Barn Dance takes place
on April 8, at the Strathmore Civic Centre from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. $10 at the
door to attend or $25 for families. The
entry includes pancake supper, a picture at the photo booth and a free kids
carnival. For more information contact
Margo Sevcik at 403-934-8548.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Dorothy Hood

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Little is known of the grandparents
on her dads side, but her grandfather
on her mothers side was Herman Tatz,
a well-known (GP) doctor in Ger-many
in the 1900s. He was smuggled out of
Germany in a trunk, during WW1 and
moved to America.
Dorothys Dad Gustav Adolf was
born in Hollywood, Minn. on Sept. 11,
1895 the second youngest of six children. Her Mum Lydia Bertha was born
in St. Paul, Minn. May 19, 1900. A point
of interest - on the 19th of May, 1919
she celebrated her 19th birthday! Gustav and Lydia were married in Langenburg, Sask. in 1921. Gustav worked for
Canadian National Railway.
Dorothy was born in Gerald, Sask.
on Aug. 27, 1933 - where she went
to school for Grade 1. As there were
no other Grade 2 students except her,
they placed her in a Grade 3 class, and
she stayed at Gerald School through
Grade 8. She took Grade 9 as a correspondence course, then car pooled
seven miles to the Village of Spyhill, for
Grade 10, before returning to Gerald

School for Grades 11 and 12.

This meant she was only 16 years
of age when she graduated. Her first
choice for work after graduation was
to enter nursing, but
she found out that
she was two years too
young. So, as there
was a big shortage of
teachers in Saskatchewan in those days,
she became a study
supervisor at Grayson
Country School, with
a class of 32 students,
where two of the students were 16 years
old, the same age as
her!
Finally in 1952, at
the age of 19 years,
she was enrolled at
Teaching College in
Moose Jaw, where according to Dorothy
she had a wonderful
time. Whilst studying
here, she met Verna Hood who took
her to her familys home in Raymore,
Sask. for a weekend. Here she met her

Hope Bridges auction

hopes to grow
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

New and returning artists and donors
are donating their time and talents to
the 3rd Annual Art and Wine Auction,
to ensure continuous growth and secure necessary monetary means to offset a lack of government funding.
In keeping with its tradition, the
event features art pieces created by
the societys Upcycling workshop participants in partnership with local businesses and residents, and donations
from local artists. Thus far, the society
has already secured 66 pieces, ranging
from paintings, to pottery, to wood creations, signalling the largest variety of
art at the auction to date.
The event is about bringing local
businesses, donors, and artists together to create a fundraising event, said
Wanda Reinholdt, program coordinator
for the Hope Bridges Society.
Its creating a great afternoon event
for people on a Saturday that is for a
good cause. The money goes towards
continuing adult art opportunities for
connections.
Just as the evening contains numerous works of art, wine is also in abundance, with more wine donations than
ever before.
While the fundraiser is an annual
event and has climbed in popularity
and donations over the past three years
raking in over $7,000 the first year
and over $8,000 last year theres a
greater need to meet the $10,000 goal
this year.
Despite donations from the United
Way, community grants, and community groups, the society was unable to
obtain the $30,000 from the Community Initiatives Program (CIP).
We just hope to keep growing it every year, said Reinholdt. So far this
year we are 100 per cent funded by the
community and by the registrations.
All I can say is that were happy with
the community support. We did not get
one of our major grants, and so that
money that were used to having in the

future husband - Thomas Hood, who

was a farmer. His forefathers were
Quakers who moved from Holland
to Indiana, then Saskatchewan. Their
original
surname
was was Houdt but
they changed it to
Hood on arriving
in America. Tom was
born Sept. 8, 1931
in Raymore, Sask.
the second youngest
of 11 children. Tom
and Dorothy were
married in Gerald,
Sask. on July 9,1955
and they had four
children in six years.
Dorothy continued
teaching throughout
all four pregnancies.
They now have five
grandchildren and a
great-grandchild is
due in early May.
Tom left farming
in 1958 and joined
Federated Co-op in Saskatchewan, then
moved the family to Calgary in 1962,
where he joined Calgary Co-op. Dorothy completed her education by taking
night classes, received her teaching
degree, majoring in Special Ed, then
taught special needs students for the
next 29 years, working with Dr. Carl
Saffron, who was the superintendent
of the public school board in Calgary.
She taught all levels of special needs as
a teacher, resource teacher and ended
up being a learning resource teacher,
which involved testing students, as
well as setting up programs for other
teachers to use.
At the age of 59 years (1992), Dorothy had to retire to look after Tom who

was suffering from COPD and Diabetes.

They moved to Strathmore in 1996, and
Tom passed away in 2006. A year later,
Dorothy became a volunteer at Strathmore Hospital where she still works
today. She also serves on the Lutheran
Church Council, and since 1996, has
been a member of The Happy Gang,
where she has served in most executive positions. For three years, she ran
the weekly Friday crib games, and
since 2011 has or-ganized crib tournaments. In early 2015, she was asked
to arrange a crib tournament for the
Alberta 55 Plus Games held in Strathmore July 16-19, 2015. Unfortunately,
she had a heart attack on July 9, which
as she said, took precedence!
Since arriving here in 1996, she stated the growth in population appears to
have affected the warmth of residents.
Town planning isnt that good because
theres no main street. However, she
maintains that Strathmore is the only
place to live, and supports local businesses by completing all her shopping
in town.
Dorothys main goal in life was to
help one person, and any others were
bonuses. God would have had it no
other way, as he was on her side.

Senior youth, also called the Thirds, from the

Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore
answered the call to support the Abrahams
Plate Soup Kitchen operating at Harvest Healing Center on Saturday mornings, by producing 12 liters of homemade soup in the church
kitchen. Robyn Braunworth (l-r), Henry Nelson,
Kalyn Johnston and Travis Nelson were happy
to share their product with Susan Ruzek (back)
who oversees the soup kitchen every Saturday
as a place where people can come and share in
conversation and a hot lunch. After soup making Susan taught them how to take the palms
left over from the mornings Palm Sunday service, into folded crosses to be given out to
those having soup on Easter Saturday.

Strathmore man becomes part

of Faces of Humanity
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Becoming a public speaker or the face of a national campaign wasnt what Strathmores Sean
Freeman had in mind when he set out to Ebolaridden Sierra Leone, the devastated Philippines,
and disaster-stricken Nepal last year.
Freeman, a Canadian Red Cross technician delegate, was recruited for his electrician and firefighting background. Upon returning to Canada
at the end of last year, he was approached by the
organization to become a part of the Faces of Humanity campaign, which aims to raise awareness
and boost their volunteer base.
Since then, along with 12 other individuals,
Freemans been promoting the Canadian Red
Crosss efforts by being displayed on posters and
speaking at a gala opening in Calgary, city hall in
Edmonton, and participating in a panel discussion
at the University of Calgary throughout the month
of March.
Its not my primary goal to be a public speaker
or to work in PR, but its been interesting, said
Freeman.
It was really very worthwhile to do that and I
felt honoured to be put in that position. A big part
of what we do with the Red Cross is paid for by
other people, and then we can say this is what Ive
done with your money and this is the difference
it makes.
The Canadian Red Cross was involved in 236
emergency and recovery missions in 51 countries
last year, and is involved in disaster preparedness,
violence prevention and domestic efforts. While
Freeman is part of the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and took on the responsibilities of ensuring operations ran smoothly, dealt with the upkeep of the field hospital and
hooked up the power supply in Nepal, he has also
helped with projects closer to home floods in
Manitoba, ice storms, and North America response.
Sharing his experiences with the public wasnt a
hard task for the Strathmore local; however, emotions ran slightly higher when he was asked about
his time in Sierra Leone and his fears and worries in dealing with the Ebola crisis, as his parents
were in the crowd at the Calgary gala.
The father of one is balancing his volunteer efforts with family life, but enjoys making a difference, the work involved, and the adventure of getting involved in relief missions in another country.
Being involved in the campaign also helped explain the scenarios to students and those less trav-

elled who may not fully comprehend the realities

of such a mission.
If youre young and you havent travelled too
much its a lot just to travel, and to get on a plane
and go somewhere during a crisis, disaster, or
emergency is something else as well, he said.
Quite often in that crisis or disaster youre trying
to set up a field hospital and youre living in a tent
and everything you have to eat you packed with
you. Its pretty rough and some people have this
romantic version and its not necessarily like that.
The month-long multifaceted Face of Humanity
campaign, which also features the individuals on
billboards and subway cars, helped shed light on
the workers needed, including construction workers, paramedics, firefighters, electricians, and exmilitary.
Freeman currently remains on the ERU roster
for disaster relief, but hopes to spend some quality
time with his family for now.

Hoops not running this season

To the Editor
#1 Hoops has been running since 2011. Inspired by
the Steve Nash program, I created my own youth program in Strathmore that ran for five seasons. I took on
a lot of values from my coaches in Chestermere and
strive to bring that to my future teams.
I am proud that I could run something for the Town
of Strathmore and surrounding areas youth. It had its
challenges like most businesses starting out but the
end result was giving the youth something they enjoy
and can learn from.
Unfortunately, this year, #1 Hoops will not be running. I have been given an opportunity to coach for
the Calgary Storm Basketball Club. Last year I obtained my NCCP. As of now I am certified in Alberta
Basketballs Learn to Train as well as trained in Alberta
Basketballs Train to Train.

#1 Hoops would have never been possible without my players dedication to the game and willing to
learn. I am also thankful to the parents who put their
trust in me to coach their kids to the best of their
abilities.
My coaches were so supportive and took time
to volunteer for the program, I cannot thank them
enough. I hope that all my players continue with the
game of basketball.
I look forward to in the future coaching all my #1
Hoops players again. It has been a fulfilling experience to run a non-profit basketball program in Strathmore and I hope I will be back to run it again. Thank
you to everyone who has supported me and stood by
me to make #1 Hoops a success.

McBride Career Group

moves to old RBC building
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The return of hundreds of
job seekers, end of Employment Insurance (EI) payments looming, and a lack
of space played decisive
factors in the McBride Career Groups relocation of offices to the old Royal Bank
of Canada building on Main
Street.
Over 400 visits are being
logged at the centre each
month and as EI packages
are starting to run out and
the number of people applying for EI is increasing, the
staff were required to adapt
their positions to include
more counselling. With the
influx in people requiring
the career groups services, the organization began
searching for a new space
in December to allow for
an expansion and program
growth a swelling concern
where the organization was
forced to turn people away
from workshops due to lack
of space.
The extra space will allow
us the opportunity to develop new programs and offer
additional services, which,
in this current economy and
job market have become very
much needed, said Michelle
Fox Salim, project manager
for McBride Career Group.
Weve got clients coming
in who are unfortunately
still looking for work, and
theyve been unemployed for

a while and need our help.

A lot of the survival jobs get
snatched up so fast, but we
have clients theyre coming
up on a year that theyve
been looking for work. The
mood is low; its a stressful
time. Our services right now
are needed more than ever.
According to data collected
by the provincial government, Albertas unemployment rate ballooned to 7.9
per cent for February 2016,
in contrast to 5.4 per cent
during the same month last
year.
The McBride Career Group
offers one-on-one career
counselling, resume help,
workshops, group workshops, and job fairs.
By moving into the downtown core, the organization
remains optimistic that more
people will become aware
of the services available in
Strathmore.
Theres always a stigma,
Fox-Salim said. Weve heard
people say they dont want
to be seen walking into a career centre. Now more than
ever its important to come
in. My fear is that people are
sitting at home and they are
depressed and they dont
know the first steps to take
in their job search.
The
McBride
Career
Groups staff of seven moved
into their new location at
202 2nd Avenue on April 1,
and plan on hosting an open
house at their grand opening
in the near future.

Roots music cover band heads

to Strathmore
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Its been nearly 25 years
and the seven-member band,
Doctor Zeuss and the Blues
Whos, is still rocking out
on stage, performing roots
based R&B music with a
twist an experience coming soon to Strathmore.
While band members have
performed in Strathmore individually, the Calgary-based
cover band, which is complete with guitars, percussion, trumpets, a horn section and much more, will
take to the stage at the Travelodge in two weeks for the
first time.
We always like to put on
a good show, but when the
crowd is into it, thats when
we really find that the energy level picks up a notch and
thats always a great thing for
us, said Tom Magee, who
performs keyboards and vocals for the band.
We want to play for people who enjoy music and
enjoy dancing. People in
general are surprised by our
variety and our ability to
play various styles.
Doctor Zeuss and the
Blues Whos was formed in
1991 after several failed at-

tempts. It wasnt until one of

the band members suggested playing cover tunes based
in real soul music and R&B.
Although some members
didnt jump on the bandwagon right away, they grew
to love the experience. However, keeping the band together for over two decades
was no easy feat, and Magee
said a common interest and
resolving personal and professional conflicts quickly
ensured the success over the
years.
Its a challenge for getting a schedule together for
everybody thats for sure,
but one thing that we have
found is that our music styles
when we write, because we
do write individually, can be
different but when we get together and play, we all have
a common will of meshing
our sound, said Magee.
Were not looking to get a
record deal and ego can play
a big part in an original band
or even in musicians who
just want to take over the
show. Were a seven-piece
group of guys who are all
very good, but were better
together.
Aside from staying busy
with their day jobs, Rod Bader, Scott Clare, Doug Jack-

Our audience laughed

How giving back

can be so good

Charitable endeavors made by celebrities

and other prominent people often make
the news. However, millions of regular
people across the country and out of the
limelight also do their share to help the
various groups fighting for good causes.
People have various reasons for getting
involved in philanthropic efforts.
As many volunteers already know, people
who give get something in return. Here
are just a few ways why giving back can be
good for you.
Volunteer work broadens your skills. Volunteer work allows many people to learn
entirely new sets of skills. The experience
you gain working with a charity can help
you in future professional endeavors.
Philanthropy produces a helpers high.
Volunteer work produces a natural feeling
of euphoria thats measurable and can
produce some positive side effects. Boston
College researchers discovered that the joy
from helping others can be seen on MRI
scans.
Giving back boosts longevity. A 1999
study out of University of California,
Berkeley, found that elderly people who
volunteered for two or more organizations
were 44 percent less likely to die over a
five-year period than those who did not
volunteer, even after adjusting for a persons age, exercise habits, general health,
and negative habits like smoking.
Charity work can keep you connected.
Volunteering is a great way to get out and
meet new people who share similar goals
and interests. People who are new to an
area or are recent retirees may find that
volunteering helps them make new friends,
alleviating feelings of isolation. Volunteer
work also provides a great way to network
for business contacts.
Volunteerism boosts self-esteem. Working with a nonprofit or charitable group
often provides immediate results. Volunteer work can help you become more
confident and assertive and provide you
with a greater sense of self-worth.
Giving can inspire others. Many researchers have determined that giving
can be contagious. Much like the pay it
forward movement, those who observe
charitable efforts are more likely to give to
or help different people down the road.

The Strathmore Spartan girls
rugby team is splitting into two
squads with the addition of athletes from Drumheller and Holy
Cross Collegiate
Head coach Jerry Flaws said he
didnt want to cut any players because of the increases interest.
Itll help us develop a lot more
because the Grade 10s that may
only play 10 minutes a game
on a normal year are going to
be able to play almost an entire
game on the other team for the
full season, said Flaws. Theyre
going to have a full season under
their belt instead of just a partial
season. It should definitely add
some motivation for the girls to
work hard and try to make that
top team.
Flaws mentioned that theyll
still be playing the same amount
of games as before, but will be
playing more exhibitions.
I would like to see both teams
highly competitive, said Flaws.
Our first squad should be fighting for a league title and should
be right near the top. And the
second squad I dont see why
they cant be up there in the Top
5 with the first squad. I would
like to see some high results going into zones.
He added that they always
hope to rely on the leadership
from the older kids because every year there is one-third of the
team that doesnt know the sport
and its back to the basic fundamentals.
The team will play a sevens
tournament, which is a seven
players on each side competition,
in Springbank and in Calgary,
while they will be hosting their

Over 100 kids capped off their season by playing an entertaining brand of hockey at the Wheatland Athletic Association (WAA) 3-on-3 tournament in Strathmore last weekend.
The idea behind the tournament is for the associations boundary players to come back and form
teams at the atom, peewee and bantam levels to
play one another in a competitive environment.
Another advantage is the kids that come and

Brown. We brought kids in from every area, so

when they walk in and try out, chances are they
ran across these kids that theyre playing 3-on-3
with. Theyre walking into some people that they
know and are comfortable with that.
Brown said its a fun event, but it showed players
where they need to be to play double-A because a
lot of them are coming out of minor hockey.
I think from what Im hearing back from the
parents feedback is were doing things right, said
Brown. Of course we talk about things that went
wrong and things that went right and keep it fresh

The association had 400 kids sign

up for ball last season and are close to
that number again; this is an encouraging sign for newly elected president
Trevor Jensen because hes seen an increase in younger kids come out and
try the game.
As a result, the mosquito numbers
will be up between 15 and 18 kids
over last year, while there will be two
peewee double-A teams this year,
which he feels will be both competitive.
Other than that for me its good
to see some hockey kids coming out
finally, said Jensen. Some kids play
inline hockey, some play lacrosse and
now theyre trying a new sport. I think
because the Blue Jays did so well and
the growth in baseball in Canada last
fall, the exposure grew for minor ball
leagues grew around Alberta.
Jensen, who was involved in structured minor hockey evaluations, said
he would implement the same process
for the baseball players to make sure
the kids in their proper place.
He added that there wouldnt be
changes made right away other than
to grow the sport in Strathmore and
get the town to provide more diamonds in the area.
It has been a concern in the community because there are 400 kids
registered in ball and only one townowned diamond.
Were doubling and tripling up,
said Jensen. We had one time where
we had four teams on the same diamond for practices starting at 5 p.m.
and thats not adequate.
There is hope that at least one team
will host provincials this year.

Theyre a good team, said Appleyard. Theyve got two solid lines. But
Im very proud of our girls and all you
can ever ask is leave everything on the
floor and they did.
At this level if they communicate and
try to force themselves to have energy
on the court we do well. Its when we
get quiet and get flat-footed then we
struggle. The girls did well, five matches
in a day is a lot of matches for these
girls.

went over smoothly and the hope is to

host more tournaments in the future.
As for the Chaos White U15, they fell
short in the bronze medal match against
Airdries ACVC Reign White. However,
coach Chelsea Nielsen felt the girls
grew as a team and on the court.
She added that there was a focus on
tightening up on mistakes on the court
but at the same time they didnt want
to dwell on those mistakes, and would
rather celebrate the things they did well.
We are getting a lot better, said
Nielsen. We have a ways to go yet. But
just seeing the team from where we
started as to where we are now, its a
completely different team. Its great to
see the growth.
She mentioned that volleyball is an
emotional game and the girls had to
show their determination even with

their skills to earn a win.

The Chaos U14 team finished on the
consolation side, but assistant coach
Lindsay Hall called it their best tournament of the year. For the most part,
the eight teams were said to be evenly
matched.
We went to a third set with one team
and its been really good to have those
and see the girls push our team and the
other team, said Hall. We came together and we all clicked, so that was really cool because our serving was really
great this game, but we would hit the
ball into the net. The girls I think had a
lot of fun.
She added that the challenge has
been coaching the girls at the U14 level
as they are still young and new to the
sport, which has made the consistency
tough.

Three Strathmore Chaos club volleyball teams played against skilled teams
all weekend during their inaugural
home tournaments on April 2-3.
The Chaos Purple U15 won the silver
medal after being defeated in straight
sets by Calgarys Ace of Clubs, a club
they had faced earlier in the season.
Despite the loss, coach Greg Appleyard said the girls displayed a great
work ethic on the court all match long.

Local Raiders rake in more playoff success

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Local Rocky Mountain Raiders bantam triple-A boys team,
goalie Ethan Rycroft and defensemen Mitch Desserre were up
for the task of being Westernshosts in Okotoks from March
31 to April 3 , which resulted in a finals appearance in front
of a full house.
The Raiders would face off against the Burnaby Winter
Club Bruins in front over 1,000 fans in Okotoks where they
fed off the energy in hopes of bringing the title home.
It was the Bruins however, who got out to a 2-0 lead early
in the game, however the Raiders would come back to tie it in
the third, only to see Burnaby walk away with a 3-2 win after
scoring late to win the gold medal, while the Raiders earned
the silver medal.
The whole crowd was good for our team, said Rycroft.
We were expecting not to do anything in the tournament.
It feels pretty good to win a silver medal. Our defense shut
them (the Bruins) down pretty good and didnt give them
much. Then our forward core worked hard to get the two
goals.
He added that Burnaby was a quick puck moving team,
which created chaos on their defensemen and shot every time
they had the opportunity.
Desserre felt that they performed to their potential all weekend long to show they could play with those other strong
teams and not be that pushover club.
We were physical and just kept getting pucks on net, said
Desserre.
They had a couple of big players who are good at protecting puck. Theyre good at protecting the puck, so just sticking
to the puck and not letting them go through you. They only
got a few shots, I think we outplayed them in the third, we
were down there most of the time.
He added that the silver medal was something to be proud
of because even though they didnt win the league, they still
got a medal at Westerns and beating out there arch nemesis
Lethbridge and other provincial champions to do so.
Meanwhile, the Raiders female midget triple-A team, consisting of locals Emma Borbandy, Hailey McCallum, Paige
Russell, Libby Wheeler and Erin Fargey, booked their ticket to
the Esso Cup after sweeping the Northern Capital in regionals by identical 3-0 scores in Prince George, B.C. on April 1

Pacifics was a real thing for us and we really needed to step up our game. We had to get it in low and
work really hard to shut them down. We had a really good for check and that really helped us out.
She added the key to shutting them out was driving them wide and not giving them any quality
shooting opportunities.
Now heading into Esso Cup, Wheeler feels they
fit in with the teams that will be there and if they

stick to who they are and continue to roll the line

combinations theyve created, the success will
come.
As for McCallum, she said that there were fewer
nerves and more of determination by the team to
put up a good fight.
We definitely had a lot of support, said McCallum.
There were tons of parents there. But playing
on the road has been about 50/50 this year and
hasnt been great but lately weve been doing well.
Everybody is starting to click more and its just no
individualism, you can see on the ice and we just
all want to get the win.
The Esso Cup will go in Weyburn, Sask. from
April 17-23.

Strathmores Mitch Desserre (l-r) and Ethan Rycroft won the

silver medal with the Rocky Mountain Raiders bantam triple-A
team at westerns in Okotoks from March 31 to April 3.

Gorski gets coaching award

Strathmore Spartans head coach Travis Gorski got rewarded for his efforts with the football program.

Justin Seward Photo

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore Spartans football coach Travis Gorski was
rewarded for his commitment to the program by getting nominated for Football Albertas Novice Coach of
the Year.
The award is handed out to a coach within their first
two years who exemplifies dedication to making a program stronger and two other teams in their league nominated Gorski for his commitment to turning around the
high school program to making the team competitive in
all their games.
He said he relied on the knowledge he gained from his
coaches as a player at the University of Saskatchewan as
to what message should be sent to the players and what
should be left up to them on the field.
It came as a surprise to Gorski to get the award because he had no idea he was getting it until a high school
friend of his reached out to him on Facebook in March,
and said at the time he found out, he was more focused
on helping coach the junior varsity basketball program.

I view this as more a team award, said Gorski. The

high school here was being recognized by Football Alberta and not necessarily me. It feels good because its a
reflection of some of the steps and goals accomplished
here as a school and a football program.
He gave credit to his team for dedicating themselves
to countless hours they put into the program, including practices, and their commitment in travelling two or
more hours to games.
Gorski heard nothing but good things throughout this
past season about the program from Football Alberta,
and now the award will help put the program back on
the map.
Spartan quarterback Kobe Holloway said it was good
to hear his coach get acknowledged for his efforts in
turning the program around.
Hed really encourage the players, said Holloway.
Before every practice, wed always have a team meeting
to instill family values. He really wanted us to bond as a
team. I guess that contributed to our success.
He will officially receive the award at the Senior Bowl
in Edmonton at the end of May.
