Riverside County
Riverside County, founded in 1893, is now one of the
largest counties in the state of California, holding a
population of over two million residents. Its borders
include Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange Counties.
The area now known as Riverside County was previously
inhabited by Native Americans, and later used by Spanish
missionary fathers for raising grain and cattle. When the
county was formed, much of its industry was agricultural.
Rapid growth in commerce, construction, transportation,
and population has made Riverside County the
fastest-growing county in California.

[Our vision is] to develop, establish, maintain sustainable healthy neighborhoods

For the Riverside County Transportation and Land Management Agency (TLMA), this is no easy task.
Riverside County itself is the fourth largest county in California, one of the most densely populated
states in the country. Regularly servicing over 25 cities, demands for their services only grew when its
departments were named flagship departments for the state of California.
With such a large area to cover, TLMA sought to revolutionize its services to community residents.
There was only one catch: it was something their current infrastructure could not support. With the
vision of renovating their infrastructure, TLMA turned to leading IT manufactures like Panasonic and
HP and technology solutions company GST, Inc. to develop a customized system suitable for their
needs.
Much of what TLMA handles involves field work. With their previous infrastructure, TLMA had
struggled to convey necessary information to their field team eciently. Under such strain, their
technology began to malfunction and quickly became a burden.
What TLMA needed was a solution that would be durable and lasting despite their hands-on work.
Putting their heads together, the team from Riverside Countys TMLA, GST, Panasonic and HP came
to a solution. The remodeled infrastructure was now centered on Panasonics line of Toughbooks;
specifically the Toughbook CF-30, and the HP mobile printer 470.
Out of all the rugged mobile computers, why Toughbooks?
To TLMA, Toughbooks were the ideal choice for various reasons. For one, Panasonics Toughbook
Line had proven itself to be the leader in rugged and reliable mobile computing. With its exterior
built to withstand the harshest conditions, TLMA knew these mobile computers were a sound
investment. The physical durability of the Toughbook line, however, was not the only selling point.
The software accompanying Panasonic Toughbooks would
allow TLMAs employees instant access and monitoring
on-site, regardless of the location. Lack of internet
connectivity had once been a time-consuming and arduous
task. Panasonics GOBI installed Toughbooks ensured a
multi-network connector, further secured through
Panasonics unique embedded wireless advantage.
Riverside County TLMAs need to take their software and
services out to residents was a source of worry for their IT
management team. Generally, such work would require
heavy administrative overhead. GST worked with TLMA,
using the Panasonic Toughbook and its Carrier Selection
Application to reduce the amount of IT administration
necessary for employees.
