ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
Rob and Brienne Starks future home and art studio is
a 3 story Second Empire/Mansard Style building. The
Second Empire style had its beginnings in France, where
it was the chosen style during the reign of Napoleon III
(1852-70), and France's Second Empire, hence its name.
This building has numerous characteristics that are
indicative to the Second Empire style of architecture,
such as the mansard roof which is the most distinctive
feature of this style and was considered both a
fashionable and functional element since it created a
fully usable attic space. Additional features of this style
include, patterned shingled roof, corbelled brick beneath
the mansard roof, lintel window heads, quoins, and
finals. This style is know to have a simple box form,
often referred to as the wedding cake style of
architecture given its clear visual indication of
symmetry.
CONCEPT STATEMENT
The design concept for the Stark home will reflect a modern take on minimalist Scandinavian
design. The innovative implementation of sustainable materials and design practices will be of
paramount importance to ensure that a harmonious yet unique atmosphere is reflected in each
space. The integration of natural materials and adherence to an earth tone inspired color palette
complemented by bright colored accessories will balance the vast pure white backdrop throughout
the home. The strategic selection of geometric furnishings and design elements and accessories that
incorporate clean lines that maintain a visual symmetrical appearance adhering to the overall
Scandinavian design concept. Great attention to detail will be paid in the selection of furnishings
and accessories to ensure each room is definitive in design yet cohesive in overall concept. The
furnishings will be modern and multi-functionality to emphasize inventive mechanics, and artistic
inspiration for an uncompromised living environment. The focus on multi-functional furnishings
will prevent the home from feeling overcrowded and cluttered. A minimalist structural design will
create an openness; allowing the eye to wonder without being distracted by one singular
overbearing visual element. The Stark family home will fosters a inviting ambience throughout,
setting the mood for comfort and relaxation at every turn. This will ensure that a calm and inviting
atmosphere is maintained that fosters creative thought and expression each and everyday. An open
floorplan will create a barrier free visual environment that will support the daily social interactions
of the Stark family when they are at home alone, and when they are entertaining guests.
COLOR PALETTE
The color palette will have a base of natural earth tones, with the
incorporation of vibrant slashes of color that reflect an artistic and eclectic
aesthetic. The hues and saturation were adjusted to change the appearance
of the table from natural wood with orange, white, and black inlays to a
blue-washed wood table with different hues of blue. The color inspiration is
in keeping with the natural tones of the design concept, yet it is shown here
in a very unusual way, which is perfect for my clients eclectic aesthetic for
furnishings and accessories.
COLOR PALETTE
The color palette will have a base of natural earth tones, with the
incorporation of vibrant slashes of color that reflect an artistic and
eclectic aesthetic. The hues and saturation were adjusted to give the
table a more natural wood look,
while also changing the
surrounding color from a vibrant blue to a more natural looking
blue. The combination of the appearance of natural wood and the
deep blue water-like tone will create visual interest in any room that
it is placed. The earth tone color palette of grays can be seen in the
base for this coffee table.

Question 2
According to the Office of the State Fire Marshall for the state of California, the Fire and Residential
Code adoption of 2010 added a key component that requires fire sprinklers in all new one-and two-family
dwellings and townhouse construction (osfm.fire.ca.gov). There are clear advantages and disadvantages to
having sprinkler systems incorporated into residential applications. The advantage to these systems is that they
are highly reliable, increase the survivability of occupants by 90%, and have shown to drastically reduce
property loss as compared to use for local fire services/hydrants (icma.org). The disadvantages are that these
systems can be cumbersome, cause extensive water damage, and be an eyesore if not thoughtfully and
practically integrated into a design. These systems differ from commercial systems in that their primary purpose
is to extend the time that is takes for residents to escape, as compared to commercial applications, where the
primary purpose is to prevent the exorbitant loss of property. I think that the incorporation of these systems is
essential and should be included in the design and renovation plans for all new construction, and a suitable
alternative created for pre-existing construction. The benefit of these systems far outweighs the possible loss of
life caused by a fire left to burn uncontrolled while waiting on local fire service to respond. Therefore I again
implore that these systems be utilized in every space, be it residential or commercial. During my research I
uncovered an interesting fact: fire sprinklers in both residential and commercial buildings discharge water only
when individually triggered by the heat from a fire, and only the closest sprinkler to the actual fire will activate.
This is a far cry from movies that portray someone smoking a cigarette that causes every sprinkler in the
building to spray water! It may appear humorous in the movies, but its totally misleading and pure fiction.

JUSTIFICATION
The process for developing my design concept had its foundation in my clients profile, and their desire for a modern Scandinavian
design. Initially I researched Scandinavian as a broad topic and reviewed history, viewed pictures, and watched videos of local
Scandinavian furniture being manufactured. During my research I took written notes, selected images and saved them to a folder on my
desktop of furniture and fixtures that I found interesting, and inspiring that represented a modern or Scandinavian aesthetic. My personal
preferred design style is a mix of modern and contemporary, needless to say that I was excited to really delve in a find the perfect mix of
furnishing, textures, fabrics, art, and materials that would meld the modern and the Scandinavian styles, while also incorporating color in
the accessories. My goal for Rob & Brienne Starks design was to really select items that were clearly representative of the Scandinavian
style; while at the same time injecting color and modern fixtures, and elements that would appeal to my clients eclectic design aesthetic.
Throughout the design process and the development of my concept I really wanted the final design to be something to be admired by every
visitor to the Stark residence, and that something that I would be proud to say that I created. The final design concept is a clear and
comprehensive reflection of my clients design aesthetic; this was achieved by selecting furnishing, fixtures, textures, colors, and art that
complemented and represented modern Scandinavian dcor. Robb and Brienne are deeply involved in the thriving art community that is
downtown Pittsburgh. With this in mind I wanted to maintain a clean foundational palette of white with light accents, to allow what every
art or records that my clients collected to really be the center piece of each space. Great thought was given to their desire to display their
findings, hence the large floor to ceiling built-in. This and many other aspects of my design changed as new ideas and considerations came
up during the creative process. I revised my schematic plans three or four times based upon the positioning of furniture, and the
importance of adjacencies that were highlighted when completing and revising the adjacency matrix. I addressed the human factors and
how they would interact in the space by placing and positioning furnishing with consideration of clearance, and free flow of traffic, and
the privacy for the Starks when entertaining guest, or when enjoying simple daily task such as having dinner, playing music, watching
television, reading a book and doing laundry. The adjacency considerations of convenience, privacy, shared plumbing, and ease of access
to mutually supporting areas was paramount in each areas placement and positioning in the home.

REFLECTION
This course has really refreshed my creative eye and has reinvigorated my love for interior architecture and design. The use of
AutoCAD, the selection of materials, finishes, fixtures, and fabrics based on a single design style, and the process of compiling all of
elements into a final design concept will greatly benefit me as an aspiring designer. The process that we have completed in this course
from start to finish has allowed us to fully develop a concept from scratch. I like the fact that we were each given a different building and a
different client and design style. The use of AutoCAD was slight learning curve for me as I was previously familiar with the use of the
program, having used it in several of my previous courses. The knowledge that was gained by developing design using this software will be
of great benefit to me as a continuing student of design and as a profession where I am sure I will be using on a daily basis. In this course
we were given the ability to really research, and create a design from scratch that met an actual clients profile and design aesthetic. The
experience gained by doing this; I feel has prepared me for doing this at every level of study and in my future as a designer. The process
alone of research and development of a design concept, and selecting items that are not only functional but that adhere to a specific design
style is creative experience gold. I must say though that shopping on the internet was a challenge, as there are so many options. I really had
to focus on must have items, with consideration for my clients modest budget. The one thing that I would add to this course would be to
have a dollar amount of a budget to spend. I say this because my client had a modest budget but the consideration for a modest budget
could be viewed different and hold lesser or greater monetary value. The use of AutoCAD, the research and development of a specific
design style, the process of sketching, rendering and selection and compiling of a furnishing, fabrics, fixtures, art, lighting, accessories, and
communicating a comprehensive design concept has greatly enhanced my creative and technical abilities and will be valuable when
marketing myself for any array of entry-level design positions.
