Getting There
Arrive early for buses to ensure a seat. They often leave early if full. Ghat
roads have numerous hairpin bends which can have fairly heavy traffic and
very bad surfaces at times. The Gudalur road passes through Mudumalai
and Bandipur sanctuaries. You might see an elephant herd and other wildlife,
especially at night.
Air
The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, 105 km away. Taxis available.
Bus
State government and private Cheran buses (T0423-244 3970) pull in
to the bus stand, just south of the railway station and a 10-min walk
from the town centre. Frequent buses to Coimbatore (every 20 mins,
0530-2000, 3 hrs), Coonoor (every 10 mins, 0530-2045), and Mettupalayam
(0530-2100, 2 hrs). Daily buses to Bengaluru (Bangalore) (0630-2000),
Mysore (0800-1530, 3-5 hrs), Kozhikode (0630-1515), Chennai (16301830), Palakkad (0715-1515), Palani (0800- 1800), Hassan (1130, 1500),
Kannur (0915, 2000), Kanniyakumari (1745), Kodaikkanal (0630, 9 hrs
via magnificent route through Palani); Madikeri (0700, 1100); Pondicherry
(1700); Salem (1300). Check timings. Several on the short route (36 km) to
Masinagudi in Mudumalai, 1 hrs on a steep and bendy but interesting road.
Train
Railway station, T0423-244 2246. From Mettupalayam Blue Mountain (steam
to Coonoor; then diesel to Ooty), 2 return trains daily. The Heritage Steam
Chariot to Runneymede runs at weekends (more frequent in season). It
departs Ooty 1000, returns 1600 (delayed when engine runs out of steam!).
Highly recommended. Tickets include Indian packed lunch: Rs 280, or Rs 550
in Maharaja coach, from Sangeetha (listed above) or Ooty railway station.
