April 2016

Emmanuel Episcopal Church

Greetings from Mother Lisa

Alleluia! The Lord is Risen!
The great celebration of
Easter is underway. Yes, Easter
Sunday is the principal feast of our
liturgical year, but Easter is more
than just a single day. It is a season
that lasts fifty daysa full seven
weeksfrom Easter Sunday to
Pentecost.
During this season, we have
many reasons to rejoice, as we
celebrate the gift of offering and
sacrifice that Christ made for us. In
his suffering, Jesus conquered death
and freed us all. This gift of love
continues to be the foundation of the
mystery of faith we proclaim each
week in our celebration of the Holy
Eucharist: Christ has died. Christ is
risen. Christ will come again.

Through this mystery of

Christs Resurrection, we are all
given new life, including the
church. You will notice that our
study of Scripture changes during
the Easter season. In the
Lectionary readings, the Old
Testament texts are replaced with
text from the Acts of the Apostles.
The book of Acts shifts the
focus from the life and ministry of
Jesus (contained in the Gospels) to
the life and the work of the church
as it was brought into being and
sustained by God. By focusing on
these lessons throughout the
season of Easter, we have
opportunity to reflect on ways that
new life is being born into the

church today and how it is

sustained by God.
What does it mean for us,
to be in community, as members
of one body in Christ? How are
we to live into our responsibilities
as members in the life of the
Risen Lord? Is there evidence of
new life in the church? As people
of the Resurrection, do we look
for opportunities to bring joy and
hope to the church, and to others?
Are we a joyful people?
Walk in love, as Christ
loved us and gave himself for us.
Mother Lisa

Baptism: The Sacrament of New Life

As the Sacrament of new
life, Baptism is a central theme in
Easter. During this Easter season,
consider your own Baptismal
vows and how they might bring
new life to you and to the church.
Will you continue in the
apostles teaching and fellowship,
in the breaking of bread, and in
the prayers?

Will you persevere in

resisting evil, and, whenever you
fall into sin, repent and return to
the Lord?
Will you proclaim by word
and example the Good News of
God in Christ?
Will you seek to serve
Christ in all persons, loving your
neighbor as yourself?

Will you strive for

justice and peace among all
people, and respect the dignity
of every human being?

OUR DAILY BREAD FOOD PANTRY

Riley Scott Gray will be baptized on April

3, 2016. His parents are Mike & Cathy
Gray.
Wyatt & Sierra Uhlig will be baptized on
April 17, 2016. Their parents are Robin
Uhlig and the late Jeffrey Uhlig.

It appears that spring is just around the

corner, or maybe it is here. I hope that
winter is not going to surprise us. Thank
you for your support of Our Daily Bread
Food Pantry. We are still seeing a great
need for food in the Norwich area. Any
canned items are appreciated, particularly
fruit and vegetables. Peanut butter is always in demand, as is
soup. Cereal is also a popular item. Perhaps as some of the
gardeners amongst you plan for planting, you would plant
some extra to be shared with the pantry. As always, monetary
contributions are appreciated. Thanks.

Key lime poke cake (recipe submitted by Barbara Tompkins)
Cake:
1 15 oz. box yellow cake mix
1 3.4 oz pkg. instant lemon pudding
1 cup water
1 cup canola oil
4 large eggs
2 Tbsp. key lime or regular lime juice
5 drops green food color

Glaze: In a bowl combine 1 cup confectioners sugar & 2

Tbsp fresh lime juice. Slowly pour over the cake so that it
seeps into the holes; let it cool completely.

Heat oven to 350. Lightly coat a 9x13 glass pan with

cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pudding,
water, oil & eggs. Mix in the lime juice & food color until
fully incorporated. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan.
Bake until set & a wooden pick inserted into the cake comes
out clean. 40 45 minutes. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes,
then use a fork to carefully poke several sets of holes into
the cake.

A poke cake is any

kind of cake thats
baked, riddled with
holds and soaked
with a sauce, syrup
or pudding.

Frosting: Using an electric mixer, beat 8 oz. cream cheese

and 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter (at room temperature)
with 2 cups confectioners sugar until smooth. Beat in 1 tsp
each lime zest and juice. Frost the cooled cake, then sprinkle
with 2/3 cup vanilla wafers (lightly crushed).
