PRLOGO
PROLOGUE

Los movimientos en defensa de las

llamadas minoras o de los grupos
oprimidos, aquellos que buscan el
reconocimiento a la pluralidad tnica, los
que luchan por la equidad de gnero, y la
tolerancia a la diversidad sexual, coinciden
con los grupos en defensa de la naturaleza.

Semejante coincidencia no es casual, es
producto del nacimiento de una nueva
conciencia y de la recuperacin de los
llamados valores femeninos, como la
compasin, la no violencia, y el cario.
Aplicados a todos los campos de la vida,
es uno de los progresos ms importantes
de nuestra poca: el surgimiento de la
nueva conciencia es un cambio esencial
que necesitamos con urgencia.
El despertar de la nueva conciencia se
traduce en resistencia, la rebelda a no
seguir oprimido, y la oposicin a vivir
infravalorado. El trabajo fotogrfico aqu
mostrado es la expresin de una visin
incluyente, ldica, traducida en lucha por
los derechos a la diversidad sexual, y por la
revaloracin de las expresiones pluritnicas
y pluriculturales como son los juguetes
tradicionales y las artesanas mexicanas.

El inters por este tipo de manifestaciones
no es meramente ornamental, la propuesta
es recuperar dos actitudes vitales de los
pueblos prehispnicos latentes an entre
las comunidades indgenas: el respeto
a la tierra que se cultiva, madre que nos
brinda nuestro sustento, y la costumbre de
trabajar de forma comunitaria.

Lo arriba expuesto explica de cierto
modo por qu en este trabajo cada una
de las composiciones fotogrficas estn
realizadas con artesanas y juguetes
procedentes de diversos pueblos de
Mxico, sitios donde habitan comunidades
indgenas: Xilitla y Taxco en Guerrero,
Santa Clara del Cobre en Michoacn,
Chignahuapan en el estado de Puebla,

Metepec en el estado de Mxico,

Tlayacapan en el estado de Morelos,
y en mercados de la Ciudad de Mxico
como La lagunilla y La Ciudadela.

La sobrevivencia de los pueblos
indgenas, a pesar de la embestida del
mundo occidental, y las carencias que la
marginacin ha propiciado, se debe en
gran medida a su particular concepcin
del mundo proyectada en sus antiguas
lenguas. El estudio de ellas nos ha
enseado que el equilibrio entre
el individuo y la naturaleza es vital, y que
la actividad colectiva que han practicado
por siglos- es imprescindible.
El conjunto de imgenes que integran
la coleccin que hoy se presenta incluye
una serie de subttulos en lengua nhuatl
que, ledos con atencin, enfatizan la
relacin estrecha del hombre con la
naturaleza, actitud necesaria para detener
la devastacin de nuestro entorno, y
acentan el dilogo interior como medio
para permitir una comunicacin genuina,
elemento indispensable para amar y
concretar proyectos conjuntos.
Me permito citar una experiencia que
viv en la Sierra Mixe, ubicada al noroeste
de la Ciudad de Oaxaca: la prctica
del bsquetbol al que los nios de las
comunidades mixes son muy aficionados.
Ellos pueden jugar con singular alegra
durante buena parte del da. No hay pleito
de por medio ni discusiones porque entre
los equipos no hay competencia, se trata
de compartir un espacio y un juego. Podra
decirse que ellos no estn compitiendo
sino compartiendo.
La intencin de citar la ancdota
anterior es hacer hincapi en que todos,
especialmente las organizaciones
por la defensa de los derechos de las
llamadas minoras, como las que luchan
por la reivindicacin de la poblacin

LGBTI, se adhieran a una hermandad

basada en la cooperacin en lugar de la
competencia, se aparten de un sistema
jerrquico de organizacin, y se sumen
a una colaboracin horizontal necesaria
para dirigir sus esfuerzos. De este modo,
se podrn evitar desgastes en luchas
estriles.
Las imgenes que integran la coleccin
Races Ateridas estn cargadas de fuerza,
acompaadas de una atmsfera onrica,
firmadas con un nimo de indignidad,
acompasadas con el acento de una voz
que no callar ms. Estas composiciones
hablan por s mismas para denunciar la
destruccin que vive la naturaleza y los
abusos, por siglos permitidos, que algunas
instituciones han propiciado en contra de
lo que consideran diferente.
Finalmente, quiero agradecer a los
creadores Gabriel, Gerardo y Kennny por
solicitar mi lectura, una humilde aportacin
a su trabajo, por haber confiado en m,
pero sobre todo, por sus creaciones
realizadas bajo una mirada inocente,
aquella que recuerda el asombro primero
de la infancia, la que cifra en un pequeo
objeto de colores todo un mundo.

The movements of defence of the groups

which usually are described as minorities,
who are looking to be recognized as a
plural ethnicity, the ones who are fighting
for gender equity, the tolerance for sexual
diversity, concur with the groups in favour of
the preservation of nature.
That is not a coincidence, is the raise of a new
state of consciousness and the recovery of
our feminine values such as compassion, the
non-aggression principle and affection. This
is an important advance in our age. The rise
of the new conscience is something that we
need urgently.
The awareness of it will be displayed in our
resistance, our rebelliousness and reject
anything that keep us undervalued.
The photographic artwork you are about to
see represents a plural and ludic vision, which
is translated in the defence of rights for the
sexual diversity. This works also invite us to
revalue our ethnical and cultural expressions
such as the Mexican toys and craftwork.
Their interest in those expression are not
related to their decorative aims but to the
interest of recover two vital attitudes of the
remaining pre Hispanic communities: we owe
respect to the ground we are cultivating, our
mother that provide us means of livelihood
and the habit to work as a community.
As explained before, each photographic
composition of this book is made with
Mexican craftworks and toys from indigenous
native communities in Xilitla and Taxco in
the State of Guerrero, Santa Clara del Cobre
in Michoacn, Chignahuapan in Puiebla,
Metepec in the State of Mexico, Tlayacapan in
Morelos and popular markets of La Lagunilla
and La Ciudadela in Mexico City.

The survival of the indigenous communities,

despite of the occidental assault and the
shortcomings caused by marginalization,
relies on the unique vision of the world that
is represented in their ancient languages.
Through the study of those languages they
had taught us that the balance between
humankind and nature is vital just like the
collective work that has been practiced for
centuries.
One of the series of this book is described
with nahuatl poems that must be read
carefully because they emphasise the narrow
relationship among humanity and nature,
they also invite us to practice inner dialogue
as a new way to communicate effectively.
We should preserve these ideas in order to
prevent the devastation of our environment.
This reminds me of an experience I lived in
Sierra Mixe, in the Northwest side of Oaxaca
City. The Mixe kids love to practice basketball.
They could play all day long if they want to.
What surprised me the most was that none
of them were fighting, because there was
no competition at all. It was just a space for
recreation, fun and sharing.
This recalls me of how we should behave as
part of the LGBTI community to fight for
our rights, to stand united in a brotherhood
based on cooperation, not competition.
The organizations should stay away of the
hierarchical structure in order to sum their
efforts to a horizontal entity where everyone
can collaborate. This is the only we will stop
fight senseless battles.
The works included in Frozen Roots are
loaded with strength in the midst of an
oneiric atmosphere. They are signed with
dignity encouragement and the desire of
not to keep our voices down any more. These
images speak for themselves to point the
destruction and the abuse that has been
allowed through centuries against what is
defined as different.

Finally I would like to thank Gabriel, Gerardo

and Kenny to ask for my personal vision of
their work. For trust in me, but over all, for
creating these art pieces made under an
innocent vision that reminds me of the very
first time I saw the world and put all the
colours together in a small object.

La frase en lengua nhuatl pretende enfatizar la idea
de que una comunidad no debe perder la unin, y
como los antiguos sabios mantenerse humildes para no
destruirse.

La lucha por los derechos de la poblacin LGBTI sera

ms contundente y eficaz si, para empezar, nosotros
mismos nos pusiramos de acuerdo como si furamos
una comunidad. En mi experiencia, veo con dolor
que nadie apoya a nadie, que en cada trinchera slo
hay una persona o una asociacin que pretende ser
protagonista, el ego y/o el temor nos impide apoyar
a otro, incluso para evitar que tenga reconocimiento.
Por rias personales y/o intereses polticos cada quien
enfrenta sus propias batallas.

The fight for the LGBTI population rights would be

convincing and efficient if we would stand together as a
group and start making agreements. In my experience, I
see painfully that no one supports anyone. I see that, in
each trench, there is only one person or association that
claims the protagonism; ego and fear prevent us from
helping each other, they even prevent us from letting
others get the recognition they deserve. Thanks to the
personal disputes or political interests each one is facing
their own battles.

La poblacin LGBTI cada vez ms golpeada por la

discriminacin, la homofobia y la violencia, se encuentra
escindida, herida, con un dolor y una amargura difcil
de describir. Mi sueo ms grande es que todas las
trincheras fueran una sola, que el orgullo de la victoria
lo sintiramos todos. Las batallas han sido ganadas
con gran sacrificio. Faltan an derechos por recuperar,
pero solamente lo lograremos si vencemos envidias y
dominamos nuestros egos, slo as nos podremos llamar
realmente Comunidad LGBTI.

The LGBT population is beaten by discrimination,

homophobia and violence, is divided, wounded, with
pain and bitterness that I can hardly describe. My
biggest dream is that all trenches join in one and that
we all would feel the pride of victory. We have won many
battles with great sacrifice. There are still rights left to
recover, but we will only make it if we overcome envy
and control our egos; this is the only way we can really
call ourselves LGBT Community.

Gabriel and Gerardo are independent photographers with

more than 41 exhibitions; they have collections of landscapes
of India, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the Chilean Patagonia, USA,
Malaysia, Panama and Mexico.

Mxico La coleccin de Seres de Luz se ha presentado con
xito en la sala Ollin Yoliztli, en el Centro Cultural Futurama
de la Cd. de Mxico, en el Museo de la isla de Cozumel, en el
museo de la Cd. de Quertaro y diversos Centros de Cultura
de la Cd. de Mxico.

The collection Seres de Luz (Beings of Light) has been

successfully exhibited at the Ollin Yoliztli hall, at the Centro
Cultural Futurama in Mexico City, at the Cozumel Island
Museum, at the Queretaro City Museum and many other
culture centers in Mexico City.

Seres de Luz se expuso en Nueva Jersey y Nueva York en

mayo de 2014. La galera See-Me de Nueva York expuso de
manera digital Seres de Luz en las ciudades de Paris, Miln,
Hong Kong, Los ngeles, Miami, Johanesburgo y Nueva York
(Times Square) en diciembre de 2014 y enero de 2015.

Seres de Luz was exhibited in New Jersey and New York on

May 2014. The See-Me Gallery exhibited Seres de Luz digitally
in Paris, Milan, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Miami, Johannesburg
and Times Square in New York on December 2014 and January
2015.

Se elaboraron dos colecciones a peticin del cliente para la

decoracin de los hoteles Crowne Plaza Diamante y Holiday
Inn Krystal de la ciudad de Quertaro. Se incluyen tres murales.
Dados los atroces eventos de Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, realizon
un triptico que representa a la sociedad doliente.

Gabriel and Gerardo made two collections upon customers

request for the decoration of the Crowne Plaza Diamante and
the Holiday Inn Krystal hotels in the city of Queretaro. Three
murals were included. After the tragic events of Ayotzinapa, in
the state of Guerrero, they made a triptych that portrays the
society in grief.

Desarrollaron el poster conmemorativo de la Ciudad Amigable

CDMX 2015 que fue entregado al Jefe de Gobierno de la
Ciudad, Dr. Miguel Angel Mancera en el museo de la Cd. de
Mxico.
Participaron en el documental La Primavera Rosa Mxico
de los directores de cine espaol, Mario de la Torre y Alfonso
Palazn; en donde fotografiaron al activista Alberto Patio en
su papel de Alberta Canad.
En las fotografias de Gabriel y Gerardo se presentan indgenas,
estudiantes, artistas, amas de casa, intelectuales, polticos
y activistas.
Actualmente concluyeron la coleccin sobre artesania
mexicana utilizando al tcnica de Arte Aterido, junto con el
artista Kenny Val.

Together, they made the commemorative poster of Ciudad

Amigable CDMX 2015 (Friendly City Mexico City 2015) which
was handed to the Minister of the city, Dr. Miguel ngel
Mancera at the Mexico City Museum. They participated in
the documentary La Primavera Rosa Mxico (The Pink Spring
Mexico) directed by the Spanish, Mario de la Torre and Alfonso
Palazn, where they photographed the activist Alberto Patio
in his role as Alberta Canad.
In Gabriel and Gerardos photographs are present indigenous,
students, artists, housewives, intellectuals, politicians and
activists.
They recently concluded their collection focused on Mexican
craftwork using the technique of Arte Aterido (frozen solid
art), together with the artist Kenny Val.

Kenny Val naci el 15 de agosto de 1993 en la

ciudad de Mxico
Cuenta con 2 exposiciones colectivas, participo
en la exposicin el 19 de septiembre de 2015,
exposicin conmemorativa al 30 aniversario
del sismo de 1985.

Desde hace dos aos trabaja como director
de arte, con los fotgrafos experimentales
Gabriel y Gerardo, en su estudio, situado en la
colonia condesa.

Kenny Val was born on August 15th of 1993 in

Mexico City.
He had shown his artwork in collective shows
such as the Memorial Photo Exhibition in 19
September 2015, 30 years after a 8.1 magnitude
earthquake hit Mexico City.
He participated in the 1st anniversary of Tlillan
Tlapallan magazine.
He presented the exhibition Cuerpo Sutil
(Sutil Body) at the UACM in Coatepec.
He had benn working as part of the creative
team of Gabriel & Gerardo, a couple of
experimental photographers in Condesa,
Mexico City.
