WMC WOMENS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2016

Reaching out to all female photographers in Sri Lanka the Women and Media Collective (WMC) calls
for submissions for the 2016 womens photography exhibition. This year the theme for the exhibition
is Women, Culture and Religion.
As stated in the theme we ask female photographers to capture how culture, religion and ethnicity
influence the lives of women. In keeping with this theme send us your photographs of how a womans
identity can be portrayed in areas such as education, social interactions, sexuality, employment, health
or well-being.
Over the past few years the WMC photography exhibition has aimed to enter a profession that is
predominantly male driven by showcasing the work of amateur and professional female photographers
from across the country. This year too while the exhibition displays the talents of women it will also
raise awareness and create a dialogue on co-existence, tolerance and harmony in a country that is
religiously and ethnically diverse.
The Women and Media Collective was formed in 1984 by a group of Sri Lankan feminists interested
in exploring conceptual and practical issues of concern to women in the country. Ever since then the
WMC has been instrumental in empowering and supporting women in the media through a gender
equality and womens rights lens.
For the year 2016 the womens photography exhibition will be held at the Lionel Wendt Gallery in
Colombo from the 17th to the 18th of June 2016. The photographs for the exhibition will be selected by
an independent panel of judges and the most outstanding work will be awarded certificates of merit.
The womens photography exhibition is one of a kind held each year in Sri Lanka and we hope that
this years exhibition too will have powerful photographs of women by women. Additional
information, criteria for eligibility, rules, terms and conditions are mentioned below.
We wish you all the very best and hope to hear from you soon.
Thanking you,

Dr. Sepali Kottegoda, Executive Director

women and gender concerns in the peace process, increased state recognition of womens rights, the
enactment of new legislation or legislative and policy reform promoting and protecting womens rights
such as the Domestic Violence Act of 2005, and recognition for the need to increase womens
representation in politics.
