Questions

There are two types of questions


1. Question with Yes/No answers
These kinds of question begin with an auxiliary verb. Example: is, are, have, has, will, can
do does did/ and then the subject. We usually answers these question with Yes/No answers.
Example: Are you watching TV? Yes I am
Have you finished yet? No I havent
When the main verb is in present simple we form the question with the auxiliary verb.
Do/Does
Example: Do you play golf every Saturday? Yes I do.
Does he work hard? No he doesnt
2. WH-questions
WH-questions begin with a question word. We put the auxiliary verb before the subject.
People: who, whose
Things: what which
Place: Where
Time: When, How long, How often.
Quantity/number: How much, How many.
Manner: How
Reason: Why
Age: How old
Who is that man? Hes her father.
Whose is that coat? Its Janes.
What is it? Its a pen.
Where are my glasses? They are in your bag.

When did he arrive? Yesterday.


Why are you said? Because I have lost my purse.
Which book is yours? The blue one.
How are you? Fine thanks.
How often do you go out? Twice week.
How much is it? 10$.
How long have known her?
How old are you? Im sixteen.

1. Fill in the gaps with the correct question words.

Question tags
Question tags are short question at the end of a statement. We mainly use them in
speech when we want to confirm something or when we want to find out it if
something is true or not.
Example: They are very small, arent they?
Rabbits dont eat meat, do they?
Tiger has got stripes, hasnt it?
When form a question tag with the auxiliary verb and the appropriate personal
pronoun.
Example: Rita can speak French, cant she?
Have you spent a lot of money, havent you?
When the verb of the sentence is the present simple, we form the question tag with
the auxiliary verb do, does and the personal pronoun. When the verb is in the past
simple, we form the question tag with the auxiliary verb did and the personal
pronoun.
Example: He likes golf, doesnt he?
Kevin went to Rome last year, didnt he?
When the statement is positive the question tag is negative.
Example: She was at home, wasnt she?
When the statement is negative, the question tag is positive.
Example: They havent finished yet, havent hey?
She wont come to the party, will she?
When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning like never, hardly,
seldom, or rarely, the question tag is positive.
Example: He is never late, is he?
They seldom go to the theatre, do they?
