Many people are clueless entering college with the mindset that theyll get a
degree and without a plan will have a successful life. I however have known the
pathway in life I hope to take after my graduation. My ultimate goal is to receive a
Ph.D. in Music theory and be a professor at a university. Along with this Ill also
pursue a path of teaching an ensemble at a University.
Most people will say that its a dream that I wont accomplish that its just a
day dream. Currently Im working on networking to meet several band directors and
make good connections to be able to get a job at a high school teaching music. I
plan to work for a few years saving the majority of my money aside and becoming a
better educator. Once I have a good amount of money saved I plan to move to
Michigan to attend Michigan University (Please dont fail me for this sentence) to
pursue a Masters degree in Music theory then of course a doctoral degree. This
dream is easier said than done, but Ive been working on achieving these dreams
with extra studying of music theory to completely understand how it works.
As an educator Ive already began preparing for this path with helping tech at
San Benito High School during marching season. Over at the high school I help with
marching and music which gives me opportunity to see how directors teach music
and imply it. This will give me experience which will also be valuable for student
teaching along with make good connections with band directors. I have helped at

Pearsall High School with their middle school euphoniums once during the winter
break. Doing this has helped me make very valuable connections. Following
graduation I plan to get a job at a high school and try to excel as an educator in
many ways to teach students. Along with that I hope to have an opportunity to tech
at a drum corps to understand how it is to teach in a rigorous environment and see
how I can use what I got from there to high school marching band. I hope to use the
ideas I have of marching band to create a perfect system of teaching marching
band to high school students to make a state finalist band. Like most directors Ill
work by the concept of you never stop learning so I can inspire my students more
than just music. I also want to work at a middle school for several years to
understand how it feels like to teach middle school and the struggles youll
encounter. The idea I have is if Im going to teach music educators I want to have
gone through and have advice for their career.
These are my plans for graduating and becoming a musical educator. Many
people may say a Ph.D. is a distant dream, but with my passion I believe Ill push to
it. Along with a lot of networking to assure I get a job.
