Course Description: This course is an introductory Biology course designed for

those students going into a health care field, as well as those considering a
career in the natural sciences. It is an overview and comparison of living entities,
which will be examined through the chemistry of biology, cell biology, genetics,

evolution, animal and plant biology, and ecology.

You need a textbook for this course (used will be fine, and the previous edition to
the current one is fine to use. The current published edition is the 8 th edition, but
the seventh edition works well and is much less expensive.
Lecture reading Materials: Biology: Concepts and Connections, by Campbell,
Mitchell, Reese.8th edition, 2014.
Again, IF YOU CAN GET AN OLDER EDITION text BOOK (previous 7th) It will
work for this course

The lab book (single) for this course is: Biology Labs Online, by Desharnais, and
Bell is seen at http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com/
This is accessed through your text's sign-in passwords
(DO NOT BUY THIS lab BOOK USED if it DOES NOT have the log-in and
passwords from the previous owner).
There will also be a few labs based on my departmental design that will be found
on line at the canvas course site in the Labs not online modules area.

Lectures: The material covered in the course will be presented and discussed in
the lecture as well in lab, and through your reading of the textbook and lab
participation. You should read all materials to be covered in lecture prior to
attending lecture as this greatly accentuates the learning process. If I feel people
are not preparing prior to class I will occasionally give pop quizzes (to help
provide inspiration to study more).

Attendance: Students should attend every class session. If you miss a class
Session, then it is the student's responsibility (a core ability of Pierce College) to
obtain the lecture notes, assignments, or any other materials handed out in class.
If a student must miss class due to a prolonged illness or unexpected
circumstance, the student WILL notify the instructor as soon as possible to make
arrangements.

Grading: is as follows, regulated by the science department: a no curve straight

scale.

Grades will be assigned as follows:

2.8 = 83%

2.2 = 77%

Students who stop attending class and do not initiate one of the following
alternatives will receive a grade of 0.0. Important Dates in the Biol& 160's course
duration: are found in the class schedule book for Fall concerning credit to audit
grade changes, W - Withdrawals. With and without instructor's signature, adding
the class with the instructors signature, at the instructor's discretion and I Incomplete. Given only to students who perform at a passing level (60%) but did

not complete the course requirements, and wish to complete the course the very
next quarter.
Biol& 160 Course conditions/descriptions.
1. Biol& 160 course grade will be based on the following, an all "straight scale"
system.
4 lecture exams (100 points each).
Many ~+20 point Lab Quizzes
(1) Comprehensive final exam. 100 points
(1) Assigned Community service action/ effort. 50 points (25 for the essay
on what you did, and 25 on an affidavit stating you did it).

There is only one extra credit possibility: for you to donate a single nonperishable food item (or socks) to my office area (Rai-222) where there is a box
outside my door and a sign in/identification sheet on my office door.
A food item (only one per person for ten points, but you can contribute more than
one food item).
The other potential for points is if either I or the lab instructor assigns an in-class
for credit "pop" quiz (done when answers to lab or lecture questions are not
answered)...so study consistently throughout the quarter.

Cheating or plagiarism on exams, quizzes (lab or home), volunteer works, or

reports will not be tolerated.
If you are caught doing so expect a 0.0 grade for the course. We do not stand for
any form of academic dishonesty!

Lab Quizzes, labs, exams, etc. that are missed WILL NOT be allowed to be
made-up.

Please speak to us if a conflict occurs with a quiz date at least one week prior to
the exams date!

-Lab quizzes and lecture exams will be composed of a variety of compare and
contrast essay style questions, true false, short answer, matching, multiple
guess, and possible diagrams, etc.

We will be doing a variety of studies in lab pertaining to the different domains of

life on Earth, including the correct use of a microscope.
All labs to be done this quarter are online at the canvas site in the module
identified for the particular lab type (not online, or online).

The assigned community service action done by you this quarter is a means
(creative and challenging!) to allow you to become an Actively participating
member of the Earth, taking it one step closer to better.

This action will be documented (by you) through imagery or affidavit, and times
and dates, showing or regarding you as an active participant in some area of
environmental responsibility and action. Ideas include, but are not limited to:
being a volunteer in a local community group / club, starting a recycling area with
follow-through in your area of residence or employment (not your personal /
family residence), doing some active work in a local stream restoration project,

beach clean up, etc

You are to write a one to three page essay describing your action (s) as
associated with what we learned this quarter in class, with an attached
mandatory proof/affidavit turned in at the start of lecture time on Friday of Week
107:00 am! Late essays or proofs are not accepted.

This is worth 50 points, and I will be critical of what you choose, so be serious.
This work can be turned in any day before this date/time, but after class start is
late and is worth 0.0 points.

Special Assistance: From (former) DSS office: Fort Steilacoom and Military sites:
Students with disabilities who believe they may need academic adjustments,
auxiliary aids or services to fully participate in course activities or meet course
requirements are encouraged to register with the Access and Disability Services
(ADS) Office, Room 300K in the Cascade Building. You may also call the ADS
Office to make an appointment to meet with the ADS Coordinator at (253) 9646526 or 964-6527.
-Students requesting accommodations must obtain the Approved Quarterly

The Lab area will be cleaned up and put away starting least 10 minutes before
the lab is over.
All organic matter will be removed from the desktops, and out of the sinks, and
disposed of properly.
The desktops will be cleansed by you prior to departure from lab. Any area that is
not cleaned when you leave will have strictly applied penalties set by myself...
(i.e. a loss of 5 points from your lab total, if your work area is messy, from the
entire immediate lab group).
All specimens are to be kept wrapped and packaged when the students are done
each lab.
Act maturely during the lab and please be respectful and smart about what you
are doing.

The comprehensive last exam will cover all the material presented in lecture (and
lab) for the whole of the course's duration, more will be disclosed later as the
class progresses, but the exam will be in a multiple choice format with a scantron
answer form.
