Angina de Ludwig foi descrita por Wilhelm Friedrich von Ludwig em 1836, como
um processo inflamatrio agudo envolvendo o tecido celular do assoalho da boca e
regio
submandibular.
Sendo
envolvimento
simultneo
dos
tecidos
submandibulares e sublinguais por uma celulite sptica, o que a garante ser uma
entidade distinta. (HO MP et al, 2006). Fatores predisponentes incluem crie,
traumatismo, doenas sistmicas, como diabete melito, desnutrio, alcoolismo,
AIDS e pacientes transplantados. (DURAZZO, 1994, HO MP, 2006).
Apesar de uma queda significativa na mortalidade Angina de Ludwig oferece
risco de vida por septecemia e/ou de obstruo das vias areas inerente ao diagnstico
tardio da doena por no se diferenciar os seus sinais e sintomas dos de abscesso
submandibular ou submental. (ARIJI, 2002; ULUIBAU, 2005; STEWART, 2005)
A causa mais comum das infeces dos espaos cervicais profundos em crianas
so as amigdalites agudas, que podem levar aos abscessos peritonsilares, e em adultos
os focos dentrios que provocam abscessos da regio submandibular. (DURAZZO,
1997; STEWART, 2005)
