Airports have now established eco-friendly operations as part of their awareness on the damaging
impacts of the airport industry towards the environment. A significant move towards sustainability
practised in many industries worldwide is the adoption of green supply chain management. This
study was conducted to examine the perceptions of Malaysian Airports suppliers regarding their
green supply chain management practices. An online survey was conducted and 77 sets of
questionnaire were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) with PLS and IBMSPSS.
Findings indicated that green supply chain management assists the focal firm to achieve its
environmental objectives and positively enables suppliers to increase financial performance, while
operational impacts towards the environment were minimized. Green supply chain management has
also increased suppliers financial performance and position the suppliers to be more competitive.
This study implies that sustainable business performance could be achieved by adopting green supply
chain management practices with regard to the suppliers of the Malaysian airport industry.
Keywords: Project management, sustainable construction

1.0 Introduction (Times New Roman 12 pt, bold)

Practices of commercial industries in the current economic system practised by

commercial industries has often contributed to numerous damages to the environment.
(Smith, 2010). When corporations compete for more economic gains and wealth, resources
are extensively consumed globally. The airport industry is no exception, as it is also one the
contributors towards environmental deterioration, especially within the area that the airports
occupy.
An increasing awareness on the damaging impacts that airport industry brings to the
environment increases have prompted more airports to establish operations that are more ecofriendly. This is inclusive of Malaysia Airports Sdn. Berhad (MAHB), the organization that
manages all the airports in Malaysia. Green supply chain management is one significant
movement towards sustainability that involves stakeholder integration. Gligor and Halcomb
(2012) have named green supply chain management (GSCM) as a powerful approach to
differentiate an organisation among its competitors.

2. 0 Literature Review
This is the literature review section.
2.1 Green Supply Chain Management

Corporations adopt green supply chain management (GSCM) as one of its strategies
that allows for minimization of environmental impacts (Zhu & Cote, 2004). Researchers
have indicated that GSCM is one the most powerful approaches adopted by organizations to
differentiate themselves from their competitors (Gardas & Narkede, 2013). Compared to the
conventional supply chain management that focuses solely on the process of converting raw
materials and delivering the final products to the end user, GSCM is concerned on ensuring
all supply chain deliveries while centralising the environmental and social concern in every
stage of supply chain. This helps to reduce product environmental footprint (Kooglu et al.,
2011; Lan et al, 2009).

Figure 1: Green supply chain design (Srivastava, 2007)

Through supply chain members integration, favourable environmental, economical,

social and operational outcomes of GSCM could be enjoyed throughout the whole supply
chain, benefitting a larger group (Wilhelm, 2011; Darnall et al., 2008). This would not be
achieved if GSCM is practiced independently by the focal company (Mathiyazhagan et al.,
2013; Zailani et al., 2012). Past researcher provided insights on how GSCM impact
operations and financial performance while and improving corporations environmental
management (Markley & Davis, 2007; Rostamy et al. 2013).
