CharlieChaplin(18891977)wasanEnglishactor,comedian,andfilmmakerwhoseworkinmotionpictures
spannedfrom1914until1967.Duringhisearlyyearsinfilmhebecameestablishedasaworldwidecinematic
idolrenownedforhistramppersona.Inthe1910sand1920shewasconsideredthemostfamouspersononthe
planet.[1]
ChaplinwasborninLondonandbeganactingonstageattheageofnine.[2]In1913,whileontourintheUnited
StateswithFredKarno'scomedygroup,heacceptedacontracttoworkforMackSennett'sKeystonefilm
company.DuringhistimeatKeystonehebeganwritinganddirectingsomeofthefilmsinwhichhestarred.
ChaplinsignedwiththeEssanayFilmManufacturingCompanyin1915andtheyearafterwiththeMutualFilm
Corporation.In1918Chaplinbeganproducinghisownfilms,initiallyreleasingthemthroughFirstNationaland
thenthroughUnitedArtists,acorporationhecofoundedwithMaryPickford,DouglasFairbanks,andD.W.
Griffith.[3]Inthelate1940sandearly1950sChaplinwasaccusedofbeingaCommunistsympathiser,whichhe
denied.[4]HeremainedaBritishsubjectand,whiletravellingtoEnglandin1952toattendthepremiereofhis
film,Limelight,hisAmericanreentrypermitwasrescinded.[5]ChaplineventuallysettledinSwitzerland,where
heremainedfortherestofhislife.HemadehislasttwofilmsinEngland.

persona
DuringhislifetimeChaplinreceivedthreeawardsfromtheAcademyofMotionPictureArtsandSciences.Atthe
firstAcademyAwardsceremony,heldon16May1929,hewasoriginallynominatedforBestActorandBest
DirectorforTheCircus(1928).TheAcademydroppedhistwonominationsandhewonanhonoraryawardforwriting,directing,producing,and
acting.[6][7]In1972hereturnedtotheUnitedStatesafternearlytwodecadestoreceiveanotherhonoraryaward,thistimeforhisoverallachievementsin
cinema.ThefollowingyearChaplin'sscoreforLimelightreceivedtheAcademyAwardforBestMusic.Although20yearsoldbythistime,Limelight
hadnotbeenreleasedintheLosAngelesareauntil1972,andhadnotbeeneligibleforAcademyAwardconsiderationbeforethen.[7]Chaplinalso
receivedAcademyAwardnominationsin1940forBestActorandBestOriginalScreenplayforTheGreatDictator.In1942,Chaplinreleasedanew
versionofTheGoldRush,takingtheoriginalsilent1925filmandcomposingandrecordingamusicalscorewhichwasnotreleasedin1925.TheGold
RushwasnominatedforBestMusic(ScoringofaDramaticorComedyPicture).Hislastnominationwasin1947forhisscreenplayofMonsieur

picturesreleasedsince1914.FurtherdetailwasaddedtoitinDavidRobinson's1985biography,Chaplin:HisLifeandArt,whichincludedChaplin's
lastfilm,ACountessfromHongKong(1967),asthe81stentry.In2010the82ndfilmwasaddedwiththediscoveryofAThiefCatcher,anearly
Keystonefilmhithertothoughtlost.[10]
AllofChaplin'sfilmsuptoandincludingTheCircus(1928)weresilent,althoughmanywerereissuedwithsoundtracks.CityLights(1931)and
ModernTimes(1936)wereessentiallysilentfilms,althoughtheyweremadewithsoundtracksconsistingofmusicandsoundeffects,withtalking
sequencesinthelatterfilm.Chaplin'slastfivefilmswerealltalkingpictures.AsidefromACountessFromHongKong,allofChaplin'sfilmswere
photographedin35mmblackandwhite.
