Fishing with the Lions in Moeraki

The Club would like to thank all our 66

supporters. Without you the Moeraki
Fishing Competition could not happen
and we would not raise thousands of
dollars for community causes.
Geoff Herbert was the new coordinator
and he had an experienced team, well
trained under Lance Hyland for many
years.
There were a few changes. The
registration fee was increased to $20.
All who registered were in for the $1000
draw - the J.E. Paisley Prize presented by
John Bringans. The winner was Stuart
Vanderweg. There was a new prize for
a mystery weight of 2-5 paua. This was
sponsored by Peter and Anne Brown of
Bayview Services and Fujitsu. J. Teilfery
was the winner with 1.05kg of paua.

this year. The heaviest fish was a 9.66kg
groper caught by M. McAtamney and the
heaviest blue cod was 2.2kg caught by N.
Boereboom. The lightest of all, but the
heaviest octopus was caught by Tiffany
Banks.
Fog threatened to upset the day but
the new coordinator was determined
not to launch boats until visibility made
it safe. Launching and retrieval went
smoothly as usual with four tractors,
four unhooking trailers, one ute taking
them away and a courtesy van to run
drivers back from the car park, plus a
team of four in the water helping launch
and retrieve boats. There were many
comments about the smoothness of this
operation.
Numbers were down slightly on last
year maybe as a result of the fog and the
air show in Wanaka
which was held on
the same day. Still
we raised as much
money as usual or a
little more. The fish
auction went well and
raised more funds as
did the meat raffles
in the Hampden and

Good Friday Ecumenical Walk With
the Cross

undertaken on the way! A hymn and
readings took place in the lovely reflected
light of the stained glass at the Catholic
Church and then the walkers were on
their way again, down the hill to the
spectacular beach setting.
The short ceremony on the beach
fitted the occasion superbly. Afterwards
the cross was taken up again and with
continued warmth and conviviality
being shared by participants, the group

those who participated in this annual
event in Hampden on Good Friday. The
journey began at St Stephen’s Anglican
Church with a moving piece from the
Visual Bible setting the scene. The sun
smiled on the first photos taken outside
the church and generously remained
throughout the event. The group then
proceeded to the Catholic Church, Our
Lady Star of the Sea, with a number of
photo opportunities and some unofficial,

made its way to the Presbyterian Church.

with yet more sunshine coming through
the windows and shining on the mellow
wood inside the beautiful old stone
church concluded the formal part of the
event. A scrumptious finger food lunch in
the hall sealed off a special experience.

The Hall Committee conducted a public survey on the toilets at the hall.

Red Hatters
In 1961 Jenny Joseph wrote a
poem entitled ‘Warning’ about how,
when she grows old she is going
to wear a purple dress and a red
hat which don’t go together, and
do the things that she should have
done in her youth. This started a
world wide organisation of mature
women who do just that. The local
Red Hatters meet during the day
on the second Friday of the month,
and generally just have fun. They
enjoy getting all fancied up in their
interesting clothes and lots of bling,
with the idea being that the clothes
are bought secondhand or made
over. As well as the regular meeting,
other special get togethers are
arranged. Recently they entered
the Gondola Race at the Edwardian
Day in Waimate, had a super time
and won best presented gondola.
At the end of the month they are
being challenged to tenpin bowling
by the Geraldine Red Hatters, all
dressed up of course. The local
Red Hatters need more members
to add to the fun. If this sounds like

Hampden Remembers Those Slain

Hampden Hall, with its Roll of Honour prominently displayed on the wall, was
the scene of the annual Anzac Day service for the area stretching from Moeraki
through to Herbert. The formalities began with a wreath laying on the draped NZ
flag at the front and the ceremony which followed provided all who attended with a
memorable experience. The old favourite hymns, a well chosen prayer and reading,
and appropriate pieces of music for this special day all worked to create the right
atmosphere. A very interesting address by Dr Paul Baker, the Principal of Waitaki
Boys’ High School, gave an insight, by way of letters written at the time, into the unreal
view people back home had of what was happening in the Gallipoli Peninsula in the
early stages. However the letters soon began to reflect the reality of the campaign
and it was this historical perspective gleaned from accounts written at the time that
Dr Baker’s speech so aptly described.
In true country style, a cup of tea and delicious sandwiches kindly provided by
the Lions were enjoyed by everyone in the supper room following the service. A
small group took the wreaths down to the War Memorial and laid them there with
due ceremony. For those people who visited the Memorial that day and since, the
beautiful poppies individually crafted by the local school children arranged around
the Memorial have been a very special sight. They are part of the enduring memory
of Anzac Day 2010 in Hampden.

 Seniors’ tenpin
bowling outing

Twelve Hampden Senior Citizens Club

members went to the Galleon in Oamaru
to play tenpin bowling on April 22. The
ladies played the men and had a lot of
fun. After ten games, we were all ready
to have a lovely meal of soup, roast beef,
vegetables, and then to finish, jelly pears
and ice cream, which was enjoyed by all.

Garden Notes for May from
Exquisite Blooms
Autumn is nearing its end and it is time to
plant some vegies, harvest others and prepare
the vegetable bed for spring crops.
Main crop potatoes should be harvested by
now and dried and stored in a cool dark place.
Yams need to be dug later on after all tops have
died down due to frost.
Parsnips will improve in flavour after
frosts have been on the ground, and generally
speaking, root crops can remain in the ground
all winter and can be dug as required.
Any spare ground should be dug over,
organic matter incorporated and then a green
crop such as blue lupins or oats are sown.
These are dug in to a depth of about 30cm just
before they flower. Sow broad bean seeds and
put in cabbage, cauliflower and other brassica
plants. Garlic cloves may be held in readiness
for planting on the shortest day. Cut off and
plant the healthy strong first runner from
strawberries for fruiting in the spring.

The days of disposing of waste
in this manner have long since
passed by.
