Reading Reflection #2
Chapter 3:

At work behavior is determined by one person and one situation.

Work situations bright out the best and worst in people and someone who slacks
off in one job may be a hard worker in another job.
What people value and personality traits are two totally different things.
Values being stable goals rule whether or not someone will accept one into a job
and how long that person will remain in the job they are hired for.
Personality is all based on how a person feels, thinks and behaves. There are 5 top
personality traits that are very important and can be fit to other cultures. The five
are; openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
Other traits that occur in a work setting are normally, self- efficacy, self-esteem,
social monitoring, proactive personality, positive and negative activity, and loss of
control. Personality has a bigger effect on attitudes than it has on performance in a
job. Some companies do personality testing although it is not the best source of
judgment when it comes to validation.
Perception is how we respond to our surroundings and make sense out of it.
Although our own perception is affected by our values, needs and emotions. The
biases that exist affect the human perception of objects, self and others. We
actually also see physical objects as bigger, smaller, slower, or faster then they
really are. When it comes to perceiving ourselves we either lean towards selfenhancement and self-effacement although we overestimate how much we are
alike to everyone else. Something that affects this immensely and causes selffulfilling tendencies are stereotypes. Stereotypes happen because we often pay
attention to everything and everyone around us and ignore what we actually think.
Our attributions to others help us respond in a certain situation and if we know
about the perception process it is easier to understand why we act the way we do.
There is a connection between ethicality and our values, personalities and
perceptions. The definition of being ethical is different because every person is
different. For example; having values of economic growth is unethical to some.
Being externally controlling is also considered unethical to some. People have
problems with trying to be too ethical because we dont understand how someone
elses ethicality works. Culture plays a big part in why humans change their whole
selves at work. So understanding that everyone is different because everyone has
a different culture can help stop cultural issues in the workplace. So everyone can

be ethical in their own way but everyone must know that the next guy you meet
wont think the same thing as you.
