MORRISTOWN - The wealth of services in Morris

County today for victims of crime or survivors, as
Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp prefers
to call them started decades ago from the grief or
foresight of people who didn't wait for others to take
action.
Deirdre's House an advocacy center for child victims named after 1982 murder victim Deirdre O'Brien
of Mendham Township opened on Court Street in
Morristown 20 years ago. Jersey Battered Women's
Service started with a hotline 40 years ago and is pre-

paring to open its Family Justice Center later this

month on the fourth floor of the Morris County Records and Administration building.
And 25 years ago, former school teacher Patricia
(Trish) Stewart became a victim-witness advocate for
the Morris County Prosecutor's Office and later was
promoted to its coordinator position. Stewart, who retired last week, was a pioneer in helping start a specific
domestic violence unit in the office and a multidisciplinary team approach so that victims of crimes committed by loved ones or familiar people wouldn't be

MONTVILLE - Woodmont Elementary School will

be closed for at least two days due to an electrical fire
that occurred Sunday afternoon, and some students
will be relocated to new locations for the remainder of
the week when they return Wednesday, school officials said.
Montville Superintendent Rene Rovtar confirmed
a small contained fire occurred Sunday afternoon at
Woodmont Elementary School.
The fire originated in a fan used to cool the computer equipment in Woodmonts server room, district
spokesperson Susan Marinello said.
Fire alarms were triggered at 5:10 p.m. Sunday and
Montville police, fire and Facilities Manager Steve
Toth were immediately contacted, Marinello said.
The electrical fire was extinguished quickly and
never spread outside of the computer server room,
which is located a few doors down to the right of the
main office, Marinello said.
The fire was contained very quickly, Rovtar said.
But as with any situation of this nature, smoke and
particulates from the dry chemical fire extinguisher
were disbursed in a small portion of the building.
Since the fire occurred in our electrical closet, some
of our technology and communication systems were
also affected and needed to be brought back online.
The building itself sustained no significant structural damage in the blaze, but officials estimate equipment damage in excess of $50,000 within the server
room, Marinello said.
Although the fire department has cleared the
building and deemed it safe for occupancy, the school
needs to be cleaned before it can reopen, which is why
it was closed Monday, Rovtar said.

Congress to triple the number of immigration agents
as part of a massive deportation plan to eject 11.3 million undocumented immigrants from the country.
Standing by his side: U.S. Attorney General Chris

Such read the fake front page of The Boston Globe
Sunday, which explained to readers that its satirical,
future-oriented editorial was based on the real policy
positions touted by Trump followed to their logical
conclusion. The GOP presidential front-runners vision for the country, the paper wrote, is as deeply disturbing as it is profoundly un-American.
Splashed across the top of the mock paper was the
headline Deportations to Begin. The imagined story
described ongoing protests outside the White House as
Trump announced plans for his massive deportation
force at the Old Post Office building in Washington,
D.C., now a Trump International Hotel.
Christie, prominently named in the pseudo-story,
was asked to field questions after the Trump speech.
In a surprise move after the speech, Trump invited
Attorney General Chris Christie to stand right next to
him at the podium to field questions. #no_side_eye for

Verizon unions

workers could take up picket lines
DAVID P. WILLIS @DPWILLIS732

Eight months after stepping away from the possibility of picket lines, Verizon's unions threatened to go
on strike on Wednesday morning, upset over the lack
of contract after nearly a year of negotiations.
"Unless this company reconsiders its shameful,
and I do mean shameful, demands, our members will
be on strike as of 6 a.m. Wednesday April 13," said
Chris Shelton, president of the Communications
Workers of America, on Monday. "We've tried everySee VERIZON, Page 5A
