Guest Musicians

Founded in 1956 during the

height of the Civil Rights
Movement, Chicago Childrens
Choir is a nonprofit organization
committed to peacefully uniting a
diverse world through education,
musical expression and excellence. Serving more than 4,300 children annually, Chicago
Childrens Choir empowers singers to bridge cultural divides and become ambassadors
of peace in their communities. With programs in nearly 80 Chicago schools, 10 afterschool neighborhood programs, an ensemble for boys with changing voices and the
internationally-acclaimed Voice of Chicago, the diversity of Chicago Childrens Choir
reflects the cultural landscape of the city.
Under President and Artistic Director Josephine Lee, the Choir has undertaken many
highly successful national and international tours, was featured in the Chicago/Midwest
Emmy Award-winning documentary Songs on the Road to Freedom (2008) and has been
featured in nationally broadcast television and radio performances, including NBCs Today,
Oprah and the PBS series From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall. Chicago Childrens Choir
regularly collaborates with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago,
Ravinia Festival and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The Choir proudly serves its
community with frequent performances throughout Chicago.
The Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir is one of Chicago Childrens Choirs 10 after-school
Neighborhood Choir Programs. These programs provide beginning and intermediate choral
training to over 600 children throughout the city while building community pride and
stewardship in each singer. Members of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir range in age
from 8-16 and rehearse twice weekly. Select singers have recently performed in Benjamin
Brittens War Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in Wozzeck at Lyric
Opera of Chicago. Recent tours have included Florida, Massachusetts and Minneapolis.

DREAMCATCHER

A film by Kim Longinotto

Saturday, April 30, 2016

2:00 p.m. Sanctuary

Dreamcatcher takes us into a hidden world through the eyes of one of its survivors, Brenda MyersPowell, a former teenage prostitute who worked the streets of Chicago who defied the odds to become a
powerful advocate for change in her community. After a violent encounter with a john, Brenda woke up
in the hospital and decided to change her life. Today she is a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for
hundreds of women and girls as young as fourteen who want to change their own lives. Dreamcatcher
explores the cycle of neglect, violence and exploitation which each year leaves thousands upon thousands
of girls and women feeling that prostitution is their only option to survive. With warmth and humor,
Brenda gives hope to those who have none. Her story is their inspiration.

Peace of Mind

The Endeleo Institute has partnered with the Alzheimers Association Greater illinois
Chapter to bring mission-focused programs and services to new communities and
engage in the fight against Alzheimers disease, the most common cause of dementia.
Our partnership will effectively serve diverse populations affected by memory loss and
together, we will help identify the most immediate dementia-related issues that affect
families.
Military families are among those diverse populations affected in particular. Last month,
Endeleo was awarded a six-month Veterans Technical Assistance Grant (VTAG) from
the McCormick Foundation to launch its Veterans in Aging program. The possibility of
the increased risk of cognitive aging (due to a unique set of military exposures) is why
Endeleo seeks to identify and support veterans and their families in the Washington
Heights and surrounding communities.
Be sure to join us next Sunday, April 17th at 2:00 p.m. (after the 11:00 worship service)
in the Sanctuary at Trinity United Church of Christ for a 90-minute symposium to learn
more. Please invite anyone who might benefit (especially our Veterans) as we seek
better health and wellness for loved ones and their caregivers.
For more information, please contact our Veterans in Aging Program Coordinator:
