Release note:
Preliminary slab estimator for BubbleDeck slabs.
This is for use only as a estimation utility and the calculations are approximate.
Check all results and do not use this utility for final design.
These calculations are based on methods and data set out in EC2:2004
Features not yet implemented: Cracking, support on beams or walls.

Version 1.00
19/08/2006

General note:
These preliminary calculations contain approximations for the sectional properties
used in an FE model - they are likely to be conservative.
The approximate yield line calc. here is supplementary to FE modelling and the moments
from one method are not camparable to the other due to the yielding and redistribution
implicit in yield line methods.

Version 1.00 - 19/08/2006

This workbook is intended as an aid to estimating slab thicknesses and reinforcement quantities for
project scheme purposes. It is not intended as a final design application although some features
are as rigorous as would normally be used in most design scenarios.
The format is set up to guide the user. Green numbers or text in cells and cells with a green box
around are intended for the user to enter values as desired. All other cells should be locked and
inaccessible.
It is suggested that the user begins with the "Header sheet" and fills in the project details. Below
this, for easy reference, is a summary of the results from later sheets.
Next it is suggested that the used turns to the "Loading" sheet and fills in the relevant loadings as
desired. The category for usage may also be selected from the combo box above the table - this
sets the combination factors and partial load factors according to EC0 & EC1 for several loading
conditions.
The user may then turn to the "Slab resistance" sheet. Here, the details of a trial slab and rebar
arrangement may be made. This also computes the moments of resistance of the slab based on
the selection and, further down, there are options and data related to the SLS conditions such as
the elastic properties of the concrete. Also given is an area where computations may be made for
punching shear resistance of salient sections according to location in the slab system and column
size. The user may simply use this sheet on its own to compare slab resistances with applied
moments calculated elsewhere or may use it to calculate elastic and time dependent properties of
the section.
The "Flexure" sheet is intended to estimate the energy balance of yield line mechanisms for a
rectangular slab bay supported at it corners - this ULS calculation will indicate whether the chosen
slab and rebar will satisfy the ULS flexural collapse condition. An estimate of deflection compliance
is also given - this is very approximate as it is based on span depth ratios calculated for SLS
moments computed from moment factors. The moment factors will be based on span
configurations (i.e. number of spans) in the "M-k" sheet and will need to entered there up to 5
spans. Note that span-depth ratio methods are very approximate and should only be used as a
guide, especially for flat slabs.
A more rigorous method of SLS calculation is offered on the "M-k" sheet. Here though, the SLS
moments are estimated using factors. The user ma however set up the sheet with their own
moments computed elsewhere. The number of spans in the system is entered to enable the factors
to be chosen - it is assumed that there will be little effect in entering over 5 spans and any greater
number will be based on 5. Moment curvature graphs for the section are given for the selected
conditions and span direction for the user's information. Deflection is computed using the
Timoshenko conjugate beam analogy for double integration of the curvatures. Take care with
selection of the number of span as this also affects the steel service stress used for the span/depth
check on the "Flexure" sheet and also the fire service stress.
