ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

India is rapidly urbanizing and the urban population in 2031 is expected to increase to 600 million. In
2031, at least 50% of the population will live in the urban areas and their contribution to the GDP will be
at least 62-63%. Urban areas will be crucial to the country's economic growth and they will require
massive restructuring to support the future population. Smart cities propose a solution to mitigate the
problem of urbanization.
The government has identified the need for creating well planned cities that can match and foster this
growth. In last 12 months, India has been extremely aggressive in executing its vision of setting up 100
Smart Cities and 500 AMRUT Cities. The government is focusing on retrofitting and redeveloping the
existing cities into better planned ones by harnessing technology and adopting smarter solutions. In
addition, new/greenfield areas will be developed around cities to accommodate the expanding
population. Another focus area will be pan-city development, where selected smart solutions could be
applied to existing city-wide infrastructure.
On this context PHD Chamber is organising the Conference on Smart Cities in India: Steering
Urbanisation Growth on 22nd April, 2016, 9.30, at Hotel Le- Meridien, New Delhi. The objective of the
conference is to provide a platform to bring in major national and international experts and stakeholders
in this sector to discuss and deliberate on the opportunities and look for solutions in creating smart cities
to steer the urbanisation process.
