INTRODUCTION
To me, self defence is a survival skill. It is the act of defending oneself, ones property, or
someone else from physical harm. Self defence has important roles in our lives. In addition to that, it
is a skill which every of us should acquire to make our own and other lives safer on a daily basic or
whenever the situation requires. In my opinion, all groups and level of societies should have at least a
basic skill of self defence. As an illustration, self defence is like putting a seat belt in a car. It is a
safeguard, precaution but it would not prevent the accident.
Based on international studies, Malaysia ranks low for most reported crime compared with
other Asians countries. It also noted that Malaysias overall crime index had decreased by 11 per cent.
Besides that, the increase in security and peace has benefited the country. For instance, it leads to a
higher confidence level among foreign investors. Basically, self defence is to stop a dangerous
situation as soon as one recognizes it. These dangerous situations can be various kinds of attacks or
aggressions. It is imperative for everyone to understand the necessity of self defence and how to use it
when in need.

IMPORTANCE OF SELF DEFENCE

There are many benefits that we get by learning self defence. The first importance of self defence
is to increase the level of safety. We will learn on how to defend ourselves in a variety of situations
and at the same time can help us feel less anxious in public. This is because we will learn the basics
on how to quickly disable an attacker so that we can escape.
Other than that, self defence will helps to develop more confidence in ourselves and
surroundings. For instance, self defence helps us to be more aware of our surroundings. It is also to
make sure we prepared for the unexpected at any time. Logically, knowing that we have the ability to

defend ourselves will encourage us to be more fully explore the world, meet new friend, and find new
ways to engage with others.

Besides that, self defence give many benefits as it can help us to improve our physical
condition, mental approach to health, and chances of escaping from an attack. As an example, various
moves, kicks, punches, and twists can increase our flexibility, strength, and stamina. Then, self
defence also can help us to improve the balance and coordination, improved the muscle strength, and
also to have a better posture. So, self defence is not also benefiting in terms of safety of the people,
but also as an exercise.
Last but not least, self defence can cultivate the sense of discipline. It is because, during the
training of self defence, we are required to follow the order of the leader or trainer. Then, it also
provides an outlet for creativity and an individualistic expression. As a students, self defence teaches
us on how to be focus and concentrate when attack an enemy. As a result, we will also practice on
how to focus on studies especially during the learning process.
According to Islamic perspective, aggression is forbidden. In Islam, we are allowed to fighting
only for self defence. The Quranic verses on this are very clear. God repeats, do not aggress,
multiple times. Only if attacked, is one permitted to fight again. If the other party refrains from
aggression and offers one peace, we are told to stop fighting.

CONCLUSION
After all, self defence can empower one to move more freely in the world and not let fear restrict
our life. We can never forget that everyone has the right to defend themselves. Anyone could be a
possible victim. For example, someone can be attacked by strangers at a parking lot, or be raped by
someone who knows the victim very well. There are all possibilities. And self defence teaches one to
be aware at all times. The community played an important role in helping to reduce the crime likes
through Rakan Cop, community policing and volunteer patrol schemes. However, I believed that the
responsibility to reduce crime does not lie solely with the government. The people must also play the
role in maintaining public and individual safety to prevent them from becoming crime victims.
