Cat 854G
Enhancements

With the introduction of the Caterpillar 854G Wheel Dozer,

customers have been given a wheel dozer alternative in support
equipment that provides improved machine utilization through
increased mobility and versatility. To further enhance the value of
the 854G Wheel Dozer, many enhancements have been incorporated
into the design of the machine, effective with serial number 1JW238.
In addition to these enhancements, Caterpillar will introduce in
January 2000 an updated 854G machine that meets the Year 2000
emissions regulations. These improvements will further enhance
our customers business and our commitment to them and the
environment. The serial number prefix will change from 1JW
to AMP for the emissions update machine.

Separate Circuit Aftercooling

(SCAC) System

In order to meet the Tier I emissions requirements for the Year

2000, the 3508B EUI engine cooling system has been upgraded
with a Separate Circuit Aftercooling (SCAC) system that utilizes
components from the current proven Cat 777 off-highway truck
system. The SCAC system provides separate systems for the jacket
water and engine aftercooler circuit. With the addition of a separate
coolant pump, the shunt tank and bottom tank have been divided
to eliminate cross-contamination of the two circuits. Each system
now has its own filler cap and drain location. In addition, radiator
capacity has been increased from 15 cores to 16 cores and aftercooler
cores have been updated to copper cores versus steel for better heat
transfer. By dividing the two systems, adding a separate coolant
pump, updating the aftercooler core and dedicating six of 16 cores
to the aftercooler circuit, the aftercooler circuit runs 17 percent
cooler, meeting Tier I requirements for a cleaner environment.
The high ambient radiator arrangement is now an optional attachment
on the 854G wheel dozer. The Standard Arrangement utilizes steel
cores in the jacket water circuit allowing the system to operate in
conditions up to 43 degrees C (109 degrees F). The optional high
ambient radiator replaces the steel cores with copper for improved
heat transfer allowing the system to operate in conditions up to
50 degrees C (122 degrees F).

The 854G Emissions Update machine improves the reliability

and serviceability of the electrical system through improved wire
routing, integrated cab wiring and the use of corrosion-resistant
DT connectors on all electrical components and covered fuses.
The electrical system has also been updated by replacing the
current lights with shock-resistant lights. Although these lights
use the same bulbs, a new housing design and improved electrical
connections provide greater serviceability and longer life. The new
housing design contributes to longer life by allowing the lens,
reflector and bulb to float on the housing by a rubber bezel.
An additional benefit to this design is the ease of serviceability
tools are no longer required to change the bulbs.

Case Drain Filtration

Radiator fan motor

without case drain filter

Effective with serial number 1JW238, a total of seven spin-off

filters have been added as standard equipment throughout the
hydraulic system to provide additional contamination protection
for the entire system, as well as the individual components.
Easily accessible, all seven locations use the same 15 micron filter,
1G-8878. There are four case drain filters centrally located under
the platform for the steering, implement, brake and fan pumps.
The case drain filter for the fan motor is located just below the fan
motor, and the remaining two filters have been added to the axle oil
cooler system between the pump and the oil cooler. These filters
not only protect the entire hydraulic system and the individual
components from contamination, but they also improve maintenance
and serviceability. In the event of a catastrophic pump failure,
case drain filters will help in containing the amount of debris
returned to the tank and oil cooler. For an illustration of the case
drain filtration system showing the location of the case drain
filters, please see Diagram 1 on page 7.
As an upgrade to the case drain filtration package, the 854G
Emissions Update offers deluxe filtration as an optional attachment.
This system adds 74 micron high pressure screens to the output
side of the steering, brake, implement, fan pumps and fan motor
to further protect the system from contamination.

Fuel Tank Capacity

Fuel tanks

Redesigned fuel tanks have been added to the standard machine,

increasing capacity from 1344 liters (355 gallons) to 1609 liters
(425 gallons) effective with serial number 1JW238. With a nearly
20 percent increase in size, the additional capacity will allow an
increase in run time of two to four hours, depending upon the
application. In addition to larger capacity fuel tanks, the fast
fill overflow system has been improved with the addition of an
overflow tank on each side of the radiator. This redesign eliminates
the slight overflow associated with climbing grades immediately
after fueling by placing the accumulator and overflow line above
the fuel tank. Larger capacity fuel tanks can be added to machines
prior to serial number 1JW238 by ordering retrofit kit 2Q-2909.

Venturi stacks are standard equipment on the 854G beginning

with serial number 1JW238. Prior to Venturi stacks, the addition
of thermal blankets around the intake manifold, turbos, exhaust
and elbows was necessary to reduce overall engine compartment
temperature. With the addition of Venturi stacks, engine compartment
temperature is reduced without using thermal blankets by increasing
the engine compartment airflow. By eliminating thermal blankets,
overall engine serviceability is improved.

Venturi Stacks

Pushing performance and machine stability have been increased

on the 854G machine through the use of additional counterweight
beginning with serial number 1JW238. The additional counterweight
is incorporated into the rear bumper and includes an additional
1814 kilograms (4,000 pounds) of material.

Additional Counterweight

Right Rear Access Stairway

The 854G is now available with a right-side stairway as an optional

attachment. Allowing the same ease of access/egress as the left-side
stairway, the right-side staircase will provide more flexibility for
entry and service.

Standard Equipment

Based on the high usage of some optional attachments, the following

optional attachments are now included as standard equipment on
the 854G Emissions Update machines (serial number prefix AMP):
Crankcase guards
Wipers, corner
Outboard rearview mirrors

Summary

The Caterpillar commitment to continuous improvement is reflected

through the many enhancements made to the 854G Wheel Dozer
since its introduction. The 854G builds on tradition with exciting
innovations that will exceed customer expectations for performance,
reliability, durability and operator comfort. The 854G Emissions
Updated machine will meet emission requirements set for the
Year 2000. All of these enhancements are targeted towards furthering
customer satisfaction and flexibility in supporting the large fleets
of loading tools and off-highway trucks in large mining sites
and power utilities, as well as enhancing our commitment to
the environment.
