THERESA
Nothing.
DERRICK
Bullshit. Youve been checked out
for three days. Its like youre on
autopilot. Even your Mom has asked
me whats going on with you.
THERESA
Im just tired.
DERRICK
Youre sure thats all it is?
THERESA
Yes, Im sure. How about this:
tonight Im going to ask my mom to
keep an eye on Lainey for dinner.
Why dont we pick up something on
the way home and just relax
together? Sound good?
It is obvious that this is making Derrick even more
suspicious, but he goes along with it.
DERRICK
That sounds great. Ill get some
wine on the way to pick you up.
THERESA
(louder than she wants)
No wine.
(attempting to recover)
We already have some at the house,
so no use spending money on some
tonight.
DERRICK
Okay, okay, if you say so.

I hear that its the owners son
from England.
THERESA
I didnt know the owner had a son.
CLAIRE
Neither did I.

(nervous, to Spencer)
The car has arrived.
Spencer immediately shifts into business mode, striding
towards the door. After a moment he stops, surprised.
BACK TO THERESA, who sees what Spencer sees, and is just as
shocked.
THERESA
Thats the new COO?
ANGLE ON the door, where DANI BARNES, 40, beautiful and
glamorous in a way that speaks of being wealthy but not
flaunting it, has entered.
TO SPENCER, who seems completely taken aback, and who glances
over his shoulder towards Theresa, both of them having the
same expression, before he looks back to Dani.

ERIN
Im really happy that thats how
they feel, but Laurence, I havent
even begun to think about another
cookbook. Im still in full force
filming most of the week. Doing
another cookbook would mean lots of
cooking for photographs.
LAURENCE
Yes, it would, but think about it,
Erin. This is the biggest advance
offering on a cookbook Ive ever
seen. I bet Paula Deen doesnt get
this much. This is a huge
opportunity. If you let the option
expire any second offers you got
would be half this.
ERIN
Im just trying not to think about
all of the work that involves.
Cooking, plating, prepping,
writing, finding recipes-LAURENCE
Isnt that what you have an
assistant for?
OLIVIA
If you want to do the book, of
course I will help in whatever way
I can.
ERIN
Are you sure? You werent here for
the last one, you dont know what
it was like.
OLIVIA
Im sure, maam.
Erin takes the paperwork from Laurence.
LAURENCE
This would be good, Erin.

LAURENCE
Come on, Erin.
ERIN
You go back and tell them that I
want to pick my own photographer,
and then we will have a deal.
Gabe comes downstairs, gym bag over his shoulder as this
meeting is wrapping up, Laurence and Erin moving towards the
door.
LAURENCE
I will talk to Madeline Tilly and
let her know what youve said. Ive
got a very good feeling about this,
Erin. They want this bad. This can
be nothing but good for you.
ERIN
Thanks, Laurence. Get back to me
ASAP.
Laurence turns to go, reaches out and shakes Gabess hand as
he runs into him.
LAURENCE
Goodbye.
Laurence leaves.
GABE
How was your meeting?
ERIN
It was good.
Erin turns to Olivia, cautiously optimistic.
ERIN (CONTD)
That was good, right?
OLIVIA
I think it was, yeah.
ERIN
I just hope he can get her to agree
to let me pick my own photographer
this time.

GABE
Oh, you need a photographer?
ERIN
(kidding)
Why, you know one?
GABE
Yeah, actually I do. Hes a friend
of mine. Hes never done anything
professional before.
ERIN
Is he good?
GABE
I think so.
ERIN
Thats great! If I end up needing
him Ill let you know!
GABE
Alright. Later, Mom.
(to Olivia)
Goodbye.
He exits.

GABE is walking from the main house towards his car as CAIN
leaves the large guest kitchen, and they sort of meet in the
middle.
CAIN
I thought today was your off-day.
GABE
It is. Im just heading to the gym.
CAIN
Since when do you work out?
GABE
My friend has got me started going

than that brain of yours, Doc. You

did it have to be today of all

OLIVIA

Couldnt you just reschedule for
next week?
CAIN
The day of? My dad wouldnt do
that.
ERIN
Thats just not an option, not the
day of. Its unprofessional.
(to Cain)
How many reservations do we have?
CAIN
Twenty-eight.
ERIN
And counting you, Sal, Zelda and
Wren, thats 31.
OLIVIA
Well, if it will help, I could do
the shopping for you.
ERIN
Thats not necessary, Olivia.
OLIVIA
Really, I dont mind. With all the
things going on right here, youve
got your hands full. I can do the
shopping and you can do a little
work on the cookbook until I get
back, then I can help you with the
barbecue meal.

She doesnt wait for his reply, just crosses to her car and

Walter and Samuel are sitting across from DOCTOR MORROW (60s,
house-call look to him) in the doctors office.
DOCTOR MORROW
Based on all of the tests weve run
the last few weeks I can tell you
that what weve tried so far isnt
working. The cancer is spreading
more aggressively than we
anticipated. We still have plenty
of time, but my suggested course of
action would be a regiment of
chemotherapy combined with
radiation.
SAMUEL
Absolutely not.
WALTER
Dad-SAMUEL
No. I said from the beginning that
I wasnt going to do chemo or
radiation. You were fine with that
then, doc.
DOCTOR MORROW
Back then I had hoped that we could
use other treatments, but now
thats not an option.

now.

And thats mans real test, right

That was my fault. Things just
werent where I thought they would
be by now and it scared me a
little. But I talked to him, told
him I didnt want to call it off,
that I wanted to keep trying as a
couple.
ERIN
And what did he say?
MIRANDA
(slight confession)
He hasnt said much yet.
ERIN
Something you have to understand
about Gabe is that he doesnt work
under anyones expectations but his
own. If I remember right youre a
nurse at the hospital, right?
MIRANDA
Right.
ERIN
Then youve seen how methodical he
is. That isnt just when it comes
to medicine; he applies that to
every part of his life.
MIRANDA
Im starting to see that. I think
its admirable.
ERIN
Its frustrating, thats what it
is. The boy can drive you to the
brink of insanity with his habits
and ways. Hes not always the
easiest person to deal with, and I
can only imagine its equally
difficult to have feelings for him.
(a beat)
Does Gabe know you were coming by
today?

6
MIRANDA
Actually, no. I came by because I
wanted to talk to you specifically,
and he would probably try to
discourage it, knowing him. Hes so
hesitant to introduce me to the
family. Its almost like hes
scared of commitment.
ERIN
What is it you wanted to talk to me
about?
MIRANDA
I was hoping you could give me some
advice on dealing with Gabe.
ERIN
Well, for starters, you cant be
wishy-washy. You have to either be
all-in or youre all-out. Those are
your only options with him.
MIRANDA
I didnt realize he saw the world
so black and white.
ERIN
He always has. Sometimes it puts
people off, because there is no
middle ground. He doesnt have
friends and acquaintances. If
youre not a friend, then youre
not there.
MIRANDA
I really want things to work with
us. What should I do?
ERIN
If thats what you really want then
stick to it. You cant say one
thing and then decide a little
later that youve changed your
mind.
MIRANDA
Ill remember that. Sorry if Ive
caused any kind of commotion for
you.
ERIN
Its nothing. Hes very... reserved
about his private life, even here.

Its strange. I thought women were

Olivia turns the radio on, blaring some pretty bad pop music.
OLIVIA
If you dont like silence, here,

As you are no doubt aware, we keep
the course up to meet all PGA
standards. We naturally hope to one
day host a PGA Tour event.
DANI
Are we being proactive about this
hope? What sort of lobbying are we
doing?
SPENCER
At the moment we dont quite have
the facilities to do this. IN the
next three years we hope to put
plans into motion.
DANI
I see.
(a beat)
Okay, Mr. Howell, now tell me
something that isnt in your
typical pitch to potential
investors.

DANI
Okay. Hows this? Why do we not yet
have the facilities to host a PGA
event?
SPENCER
To put it simply, we just do not
have the size to accommodate such
an event at the present time. We
lack room space, lack proper
preparation for the influx of
people, and are severely
understaffed. We hold golf events
here twice a year, nothing on a
grand scale, and so far thats been
all we can handle. There are also
other events hosted by our other
amenities, like horseback riding.
DANI
And these are all problems you hope
to alleviate in the next two to
three years?
SPENCER
That is the current hope, yes.
DANI
I see. Where to next?
SPENCER
Well I guess next would be-DANI
I want to see the stables.

Then next would be the stables.

Im guessing that means she dumped

We have contemplated opening it as

WALTER
(a beat)
I just cant understand what would
make someone give up on everything
so easily.
REID
Im not following you.
WALTER
I dont care how bad the situation
gets, or how tough the road. If
there was even the slightest chance
of getting better I would leap at
it. How can someone be so willing
to just lay down and wait to die?
REID
(realizing)
Ah. The doctor didnt go well,
then?
We can see that it is becoming difficult for Walter to hold
it together as he informs Reid; this is something hes been
holding inside, unable to tell anyone, so it is a relief to
him that he can confide in Reid.

WALTER
The cancer has spread pretty far.
The doctor says its still possible
to beat it, but he refuses to even
consider the options.
REID
I dont know that I blame him,
though. Your perspective is from
the outside. We dont know whats
going on inside his body. I havent
personally experienced it, but I
know people with fathers, mothers,
uncles, grandparents, that have
gone through chemo. They say they
shrivelled up to nothing. All
throughout it the treatment made
them sicker than the cancer had.
Its easy for us to say how its
obvious that he needs to do it,
because in the end its not us who
has to go through the consequences
of that choice. Im sure hes
thinking about it differently. Hes
scared of what will happen if he
gets the chemotherapy.
WALTER
But its the only chance he has-REID
Maybe he doesnt see it that way.
Im sure hes thinking that theres
no guarantee that the treatments
will work, and if not, then what
was it for? Think of his age. Which
is worse, the symptom or the cure?
WALTER
Okay, thats fine. I can respect
that choice. But he says hes done
with all of it, the tests, the
doctor visits, all of it. There are
a lot of experimental treatments
out there we can try. But I think
hes just throwing in the towel.

Well, did you expect him to start
thinking about that this late in
the game?
With that said Reid pats Walter on the shoulder and gets out
of the car. Walter sits there, staring at the steering wheel
for a moment, and then he turns the keys in the ignition,
starting the car, a determined look coming across his face.
He backs the car out of the driveway, and on his departure

They fall silent, and it is apparent that Theresa regrets
being sharp with him, and she takes a deep breath to prep
herself for the effort shes about to make.
THERESA
(almost forced)
Have you thought about what you
want for dinner? What kind of
pizza?
DERRICK
I know you arent that big a fan of
pepperoni. How about plain cheese?
THERESA
(smiling)
Sounds great.
Theresa turns to look out the window and as she does we ANGLE
ON HER FACE IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, her smile slowly fading
until shes very somber-looking. From this we:

Yes, this is all very impressive,
Mr. Howell. My father speaks very
highly of this place, and of you. I
was delighted when he let me know
that you would be providing me with
everything I need as I settle in
here.
SPENCER
Excuse me, but settle in here?
DANI
I have no taste for Los Angeles.
The west coast doesnt agree with
me much, Mr. Howell, and to be
honest, being in my fathers shadow
there is more than a little
intimidating, wouldnt you think?
My father has been saying for a
while that the Ivory Resort is
going to be the shining new jewel
for the company.
(a beat)
You have an office, yes?
SPENCER
Of course, maam.
DANI
Please, call me Dani. Or at least
Ms. Barnes.
Spencer doesnt have anything to say to this.
DANI (CONTD)
Show me to your office.
Spencer starts guiding her along the way.
DANI (CONTD)
I dont have much of a head for
business, but my father wants me to
share in the family company. I lack
experience in this field, and so he
and I both agreed that learning
first to deal with the company on a
singular level would help me in
dealing with it on a larger scale.
They reach the elevators, pushing the button.

very much like my father, wouldnt
you agree?

I disagree, and so does my father.
He isnt a man that gives praise
well-- trust me on this. The fact
that he speaks well of you is
enough to convince me.

I understand your objections. I
assure you I will be as little a
burden on you as possible.
After this she pauses and offers him a cheery smile.

Gabe is sitting at a table on the small patio of the mom-andpop-looking cafe. Theres no one else there, and the street
traffic seems minimal. There are already two menus on the
table and two glasses of water.
Miranda appears, and Gabe, noticing her, gets up to meet her,
but doesnt seem very pleased, but Miranda is putting on a
cheerful front.
MIRANDA
This isnt what I expected when you
asked me to meet you for dinner.
The place looks really cute. Is the
food good?

she does, too.

I keep trying to figure out whats

Her words are getting to Gabe, who reacts physically, blaming
himself for the emotional turmoil that shes in.

Why do you think theres something
wrong with you?
MIRANDA
Theres something that makes you
not want me.
GABE

Miranda, that has nothing to do

MIRANDA
Is there someone else?
GABE
Miranda, listen to me-MIRANDA
There is, isnt there? What does
she have that I dont? What could

Miranda, let me talk, please.
Youre perfect: sweet, smart,
beautiful, funny, everything a guy

Cain.
Cain turns and we turn with him to see Olivia coming down the
steps of the porch, a big tray of drinks in hand.
Cain immediately gets up and crosses to her, taking it from
her. Without saying anything Olivia starts down the path
towards her car.
CAIN
Hey, hey. Where are you going?
OLIVIA
Home. Im done for the night.
She keeps walking, but Cain goes after her.
CAIN
Listen, please. Wait a sec. Just
wait.
She stops grudgingly and turns around.
OLIVIA
What do you want?
CAIN
I thought about what you said
earlier. Youre right, I was rude.
Theres no excuse for it, no
apologies for it. I just want to
say Im really sorry about it. I
hope we can start over again, clean
slate.
OLIVIA
It took me pointing out to you that
it was a rude thing to do. What
does that say about you?
CAIN
I made a simple mistake, and Im
saying Im sorry!
Cain is very earnest but it really isnt making any impact on
whether or not Olivia accepts his apology.

Saying Im sorry isnt all it takes
to make something go away, you
know. Sure, you say youre sorry,
and maybe you actually mean it.
CAIN
Of course I mean it!
OLIVIA
But meaning it isnt enough. There
are a whole lot of people like you
in the world. Sure, youre earnest,
sure youre cute, but thats not
all its made out to be.
Cain has no idea what she means anymore, and on some level
its obvious that Olivia doesnt either.
CAIN
What does that even mean?
OLIVIA
I mean that you go around callously
hurting peoples feelings, not even
aware that its happening. Thats
not the way people should be.
Cain stands there, processing what shes saying, unsure how
to respond to it. As they talk Walter arrives home, coming
along the path towards them. Noticing this, Olivia decides to
bring the conversation to a close.
OLIVIA (CONTD)
Its been a long day. Im going
home. Good night.
As she walks away she passes Walter, who gives her a friendly
greeting.

I know that its not your choice.
You have nothing to be sorry for.

They are my responsibilities, Mom.
You taught me to never turn my back
on things that I have to do.
And with that Ruth knows what is going on, but for her sons
sake she doesnt say anything about it. What she does is
reach across the table, grasp her sons hand, and hold it.
Walter gives her a happy smile, and she returns it, then gets
up and turns to Erin.
RUTH
You can do without me for the rest
of the night, right? Im tired and
just want to lay down.

Theresa reluctantly sits down as Derrick cleans.

I was thinking about what you said
earlier, about our financial
situation. I just dont think its
as bad as youre making it out to

Of course we are, but its taking
time. The last thing we need right

responsibility.
The tone of voice Theresa uses gets Derricks attention, and
he is instantly wary about what shes saying.

She tosses the bag to Derrick, who catches it, looking down
at it at a loss for words.
ANGLE ON THE BAG and we can see a pregnancy test in there,
the one she took in the last episode. Derrick just stares at
it, finally looking at Theresa with the question obvious on
his face.
DERRICK
Does this mean... are you?
THERESA
(not at all thrilled)
Yeah, Im pregnant.
DERRICK
(elated)
Thats amazing! This is amazing!
He crosses to Theresa, embracing her happily, but she doesnt

THERESA
No, this isnt amazing. This is the
worst thing that could happen right
now.
DERRICK
(stunned by her words)
How can you say that?
THERESA
You said it yourself. Were just
starting to get back on our feet.
Having a baby would set us back so
far.
Derrick slowly sits down on the couch, unable to believe that
hes hearing this from his wife.
Theresa sits down next to him, talking to him cajolingly,
almost like she would a child whom she is trying to convince
something.
THERESA (CONTD)
