ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES 1995 AG ADVISORY COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General Janet Reno today

appointed seven new members to the Attorney General's Advisory
Committee of United States Attorneys. The Committee, created in
l973, advises the Attorney General on law enforcement issues and
provides the U.S. Attorneys a key voice in Department policy. Each
of the new members will serve two-year terms.
The new members are:
Alan D. Bersin, San Diego, California
Gregory M. Sleet, Wilmington, Delaware
P. Michael Patterson, Tallahassee, Florida
Kathryn E. Landreth, Las Vegas, Nevada
Janice McKenzie Cole, Raleigh, North Carolina
Sherry S. Matteucci, Billings, Montana
Thomas J. Monaghan, Omaha, Nebraska

"Each of these talented U.S. Attorneys brings a significant

amount of expertise to the Committee which will be important as we
forge ahead in the fight against crime," Reno said. "In making
these appointments, we have tried to achieve a balance of office
size, geographic location and diversity."
Reno said Bersin, United States Attorney for the Southern
District of California, is expert on immigration matters and health
care fraud. He has held the positions of executive assistant to
the Board of Police Commissioners for the City of Los Angeles,
associate/partner at Munger, Tolles & Olsen, and visiting professor
at the San Diego School of Law and the University of Southern
California. A member of both the California and Alaska Bar, Bersin
was appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of
California in November l993.
Sleet, United States Attorney for the District of Delaware,
has represented the United States Attorneys on the Department of
Justice Inter-Agency Bank Fraud Working Group since his appointment
in June 1994. He began his career as an assistant public defender
in Philadelphia (l976-l983). For the next eight years he held the
positions of associate attorney at LaCheer and Alva; partner with
Sleet and Phillips; partner with Sleet and Farrell; associate
attorney with Harper and Paul; and associate attorney with Charyl
Harden. In l990 he served as Deputy Attorney General for the State
of Delaware and in l992 held the position as counsel for Hercules
Inc. He is a member of both the Delaware and Pennsylvania Bar.
Patterson, United States Attorney for the Northern District of
Florida, practiced in both the private and public sectors in
Florida--a state with considerable experience in dealing with drug
trafficking and immigration. Reno said his experience in these
areas will be helpful to the Committee, which deals with these
issues on both the federal and state levels. He began his career
as an assistant public defender. Before becoming partner with
Patterson and Susco in l982, he was associate attorney with
Louis F. Fay Jr. and also was in private practice. From l983-l993
he served as Assistant State Attorney for the State of Florida.
Patterson was appointed United States Attorney in November l993.
Landreth, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada,
has been active in the area of Native American issues and juvenile
justice. She began her law career in private practice and was
assistant professor of law at Old College in Reno, Nevada. From
l987-l992 she held the positions of vice president and general
counsel, Citicorp Marketing-Chicago; vice president and business
general counsel, Citibank-Nevada; and director, corporate
secretary, Citibank-Utah. In l992, Landreth was in private
practice and president of Dispute Resolution Alternatives Inc. She
was appointed United States Attorney in October l993.
Before graduating from Fordham University Law School in l979,
Cole, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North
Carolina, was a police officer for the City of New York. She is an
expert in the areas of juvenile justice and health care fraud. For
four years she served as an Assistant United States Attorney for
the Eastern District of New York and was appointed District Court
Judge, First Judicial District of North Carolina in l990, where she
served until her appointment as United States Attorney in February
l994. Cole belongs to both the New York and North Carolina bars.
A graduate of the University of Montana Law School in l979,
Matteucci, United States Attorney for the District of Montana,
served as associate with John M. Dietrich in Billings, and partner
with Crowley/Haughey/Hanson/Toole & Dietrich in Billings. She was
appointed United States Attorney in November l993 and has been very
active in the area of Native American issues and civil rights.
Monaghan, United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska,
has been an active member of both the white collar crime and
controlled substances and drug abuse prevention and education
subcommittees of the Attorney General's Advisory Committee. He is
a graduate of Creighton University and the University of Nebraska
Law School and is a member of the Nebraska State Bar. He served as
associate attorney with Malcolm Young in Omaha, and later as
partner (l978-l993) with Monaghan/Tiedeman & Lynch in Omaha. For
six years he was a part-time instructor at the College of St. Mary
in Omaha. He was appointed United States Attorney in November
l993.

Stiles, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of

Pennsylvania, will continue to serve as Chairman of the Committee.
Battaglia, United States Attorney for the District of Maryland,
will continue as Vice Chair.
The United States Attorneys whose appointments to the Advisory
Committee will expire on January 3l, l995, are:
